Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Grin meg - same here!

Bought some sirloin for dinner. its about 200g a steak. pack says 205 cal per 100g raw. it also says a 'typical' cooked steak is 215 cals with fat trimmed. that can't be right can it? Its not that fatty. Thats just really misleading isn't it?

PeachandBlack · 13/03/2014 16:04

I was going to wait for the next thread to jump in but that's just delaying tactics.

I've done 5:2 before, lost a stone last year (have since nc'd) but have had a really difficult few months and have tried to solve the problem with food Hmm, yeah like that works. It's been more comfort gorging than comfort eating and, to be honest, I haven't even enjoyed it that much!

Today, however, the sun is shining - one of my problems has turned a corner and I'm feeling better equipped to deal with another one. So I'm going to start posting again here to motivate myself, I know that this works and that it only hurts on the first day Wink.

I am going to weigh myself tomorrow and go from there so see you around.

womblesofwestminster · 13/03/2014 16:46

wafts herself

Someone pass the smelling salts. The new teacher at my DD's school is a double of Sherlock.

dies

My fast day just got awesome.

womblesofwestminster · 13/03/2014 16:47

Don't know why those words are striked through. Oh well.

MazzleDazzle · 13/03/2014 17:00

Really Eat? (Goes off to find other thread...)

MazzleDazzle · 13/03/2014 17:11

Yes PrimalLass, certainly brightens up a dull day!

Oh no Wombles! Luckily my DD's teacher is matronly.

FD here, but got off to a bad start when I met a friend for coffee and succumbed to 2 choc digestives! Bang goes 170 cals. Ah well, onwards and upwards. Had chicken and leek soup for dinner (200 cals) and off to circuit training shortly. 100 cals left for a warm bed time drink if need be.

Weigh day tomorrow and at long last my period has arrived, so I should see a drop on the scales tomorrow. I swear I get PMT for a fortnight! or maybe I'm just a moody cow

Hang in there fellow fasters! We're almost there.

zedzedzed · 13/03/2014 17:20

Quick, somebody tell me where this great thread is...I'm STARVING and still have a couple of hours till dinner!

MrsFlorrick · 13/03/2014 17:52

Chastity belt ShockShockSmileGrin.

Yikes. Perhaps I should get one! Wink

Bigchoc. If you do babysitting as well as keeping DH in line, you're hired! Wink

Probably won't need granny nighty. I caught sight of myself this morning in various states of undress. Confused Not pretty! I look normal with clothes on but without its like a fucking car crash!Confused
Saggy nasty misshapen skin.
(Hopes that Hopefulgum isn't on thread to hear the impact of pregancy...)

zedzedzed · 13/03/2014 19:44

mrs I have a mummy apron you wouldn't believe, a crepe-y saggy sack of skin that hangs a good 3" beneath my enormous c-section scar (ear to ear as bloody humungous 12lb baby wouldn't fit out the regular incision) I'm not telling you this to put you off your dinner, but just to keep you company. I'm pretty sure that no matter how skinny I get it'll still need tucked into my troos at the start of each day...unless I win the lottery and someone invents non-surgical apron removal.

Just back from parents evening at my 2.5yr old's nursery, where it turns out he doesn't speak!
This is astonishing, this kid talks in 15-20word long sentences and constantly narrates our lives, non-stop, all day long till my brain is hurty.

And yet they tell me he 'has managed 2-3 word sentences'. Wtf? I guess he feels shy there, but he seems so confident elsewhere. It's like they've been deprived of knowing three quarters of his personality. Other than that, he is the gorgeous, social, happy kid I know with them too (just mute!).

Gorgeous roast chicken risotto and huge salad for dinner, enough left for a hot chocolate before bed.

Helliecopter · 13/03/2014 20:23

badger - I was 15 stone and size 18 20 at one point in my mid 20s. Even when I lost loads and was almost 9 stone a few years later, I still felt massive and automatically went for 14s/16s...I was a 10. I never, ever, could get it into my head that I was slimmer.

Welcome peach

Where's this entertaining thread? I want it... Wink

Has anyone seen the WW advert on telly? It's just been on 4, on The Hoarder Next Door. Its first claim is "no fasting"! haha! (I love the hoarding programme. I find it hard to chuck stuff away in case it's useful and it makes me feel better about my crap...but also makes me want to have a good clear out!!)

I've had a mixed day. I don't know what was going on in my head. Haven't been ravenously hungry but you know those Cadbury mis-shapes from the outlet shop i bought for OH yesterday? I've eaten 6 of the buggers today.

Done a lot of walking with the DDs this morning though, and cut back on dinner by not having noodles with the chicken and veg stir fry. I've worked out on MFP that I'm around 1600 not including any exercise or BF cals so I'm hoping I've turned it around. Thinking about bunging in an extra FD tomorrow to allow for a pizza express lunch on Saturday and Sunday lunch with my folks.

Helliecopter · 13/03/2014 20:25

Oh, and just to add, I got my BFP with DD2 just 3 weeks after my last attempt at 5:2, so maybe there is something in it.......!

Tiredemma · 13/03/2014 20:40

zed- I have the C section 'Apron of Flesh' too.

Sad
MazzleDazzle · 13/03/2014 20:45

Ha ha. That's funny Hellie, their catch phrase used to be "Weight Watchers...where no food's a sin" having a dig at Slimming World and their 'syn' system. Obviously they now see 5:2 as their biggest threat!

Not going to have my last 100 cals as I've had a few 'tastes' of things when I was making kids's dinner. Even had a tiny nibble of my DD's gingerbread man.

Have been having a bit of a clear out now that so many of my clothes are getting baggy. Jeans I had to squeeze into a few months ago now won't stay up and there are no loop holes for a belt Sad. I keep hoping my giant feet will shrink, but so far nothing! I had a size 8 when I was 12 though so not holding out too much hope.

By the way zed could it be that the teachers just don't know your kid very well? Or that they're ticking a box and putting him into a category? I only ask as my DD is a whizz with numbers and has been since she was very yo

Night night folks, catch up with you all tomorrow.

MazzleDazzle · 13/03/2014 20:48

Sorry zed, thumb slipped!

...young, yet her report cards from nursery/preschool always said she could 'confidently count from 1-10' when she could go up to 100 Confused. When I asked her she said "but the never ask me to go higher!". Maybe they're not spending time chatting to your DS or only asking closed questions.

Octopus37 · 13/03/2014 21:02

Me to, think I would eat all the calories back in one sitting, could not cope with being up the duff, 2 is enough.

DakotaFanny · 13/03/2014 21:16

Sorry, haven't had time to read through all since i last post, but just wanted to report fast 3 complete. Love it!

Hope you are all well.x

MazzleDazzle · 13/03/2014 21:17

Snap, TiredEmma!

If anything it's gotten worse the more weight I lose.

EagleRay · 13/03/2014 21:29

Wow hopefulgum congratulations on your wonderful news!!! I'm a veteran of the 40+ pregnancy thread - it's a bit quieter of late but still lots of upduffed old birds on it!

Second FD done and dusted for the week, which brings me to a whole month of 5:2 completed. Still smarting from the weight gain this week and still a bit mystified as to why it happened, but will weigh myself again tomorrow. And will do some measurements this eve to see if I'm even a millimetre smaller please please let there be some shrinkage

Despite a shocking week with poorly DD, I managed to get to the gym last night for a session with the PT. Still really loving the weight training, although there seems to be a huge difference between the strength in my back and other body parts. Struggle with a single pressup but am finding the squats quite relaxing. Did 3 x 10 reps with 45kg and managed 47.5kg on the lat pull down. Still a long way to go in terms of strength but love my sessions and love watching the men lift big weights

ErrolTheDragon - interesting you say there should be a thread just for the BFP 5:2ers! Was wondering myself what impact this WOE has on fertility/fertility problems. I'm about to start on drugs which will hopefully kick-start my reproductive system again and hope that 5:2 will do its bit too. Ah NotHolden just read your post too! Congrats on your DD!

Have noticed something interesting where I work - started there a couple of months ago, and a month in I started 5:2. There's about 80 people working there, split over 2 floors. Through various food-related conversations in the kitchen (there's one on each floor), mostly through talking about resisting the biscuit tin, I've discovered 5 other 5:2 people so far. So that makes roughly 1 in 7 colleagues doing it (assuming it's the same proportion on the other floor). Seems like quite a lot! Most seem very happy with it and have lost weight or enjoying other health benefits.

CiderwithBuda · 13/03/2014 21:47

Evening all. End of another successful FD for me I think. Managed not to eat till this afternoon when for some reason I succumbed to an apple. DH's fault as he made me try to decide which apple tree we should plant in garden! Also had a slice of ham. Dinner was sirloin steak and salad. Resisted the red wine DH was guzzling so very proud of that!

Feeling the cold today though. My feet are freezing! So I'm snuggled up in bed.

Night all. Good luck for tomorrow anyone who is fasting. I'm off to the ideal homes show so might not get a chance to post.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 13/03/2014 21:53

C section people who posted below... Are you also weirdly numb around the scar? It's the strangest feeling. I don't have an 'apron of flesh' but it's all at an angle now where one part was pulled in (totally guessing that's why) and the other is a sizeable chunk that pokes out. I don't think I've described that well but I don't know how else to. Basically one side is thin, one side is fat...

DakotaFanny · 13/03/2014 22:44

Ah, congrats hopeful!!!!

MrsFlorrick · 13/03/2014 22:52

Zed. Thanks For the solidarity. Smile And Shock 12lbs baby! Wow. Grin Impressive.

I went for a swim this evening Grin

It was fecking awesome!! Grin

Despite not having swam for several
Months due to illnesses, I broke my personal best ever! Grin

I swam 2.5km in 1 hour and 4 minutes!!

Generally my best would be 2km in an hour and 2.5km would take 1.5 hours. I've only once done it in 1 hour and 20.

Jillian Michaels obviously works!

So I feel aweeeeesoooooome! GrinGrin

Impromptu FD here. I'm trying hard to go to sleep so I don't go and scoff a load of stuff after my swim.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/03/2014 23:41

Well done MrsF - awesome indeed!

FD went ok - a tiny bit over, I'd forgotten to allow for some extra veg with my dinner and not having broccoli for the sake of a few cals over a fairly arbitraty number would have seemed quite perverse. Bed now.

mummyof2girlsx · 14/03/2014 07:03

Happy Firday Grin

No fasting for me today as its my Wedding Anniversary, so mini fast whilst I'm at work and then nice food and Wine planned for tonight.

Enjoy your weekends Smile

zedzedzed · 14/03/2014 07:21

Yes evees totally numb, all muscles fecked, will deal with that later in the year, but the apron is for life I fear as it's skin not flub.

meg I know what you mean, but they're so LOVELY at his nursery, really committed and interested (it's in a small village, but kids are bused in from all over as it's so well thought of). They just didn't know he could talk like a 4yr old at home because he simply doesn't there, and they're keen to see if they can find a way to help him be more verbal with them. I'm
just blown away that he doesn't blether like he does with us...total chatterbox.

Nevermind all that, the real news is; NEWSFLASH!!!

I am wearing The Jeans
Size 16, easily on, easily zipped, not like an over-stuffed sausage, just on.

Woo-feckin-hoo!

So that's the size 14s going on the back of my bedroom door now, I will have them in my sights.

All of them are mummy-style bootleg though, skinnies may never be my thing as even as a size 10 there was junk in da trunk that required balancing out, and now there's the apron to contend with too (am wearing a wee slip dress over jeans today as I can see the apron through the jeans...shudder)

Anyhoo. HUZZAH FOR JEANS!!

Off to my building site for the weekend, happy feasting and fasting people; keep on truckin, this woe definitely works.
