The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Zed!!! GrinGrin That's brilliant! So fantastic! Grin
Great news.
Won't be long till you're into those 14s.

NFD here.
Happy fasting to all those who are. Grin

MrsFlorrick · 14/03/2014 08:17

Evees. No numbness. Not even on the actual scar line.
I was numb for 6/7 months the first time and then I had a load of shooting pains and tingling and the feeling came back.
Ditto second time.

I have friends with much neater bellies than mine who are numb over large areas.

It's pot luck whether the nerves fully grown back apparently.

You will know if yours do at some point because you will have shooting and stabbing pains down you legs from just north of the scar line. It's very uncomfortable and it goes on for a few months. I was so worried the first time in case the pain was forever.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/03/2014 08:49

Have a lovely evening mummyof2.

zed - brilliant!

ErrolTheDragon · 14/03/2014 10:36

Weigh day - same as last week which is what I was hoping for, given that NFDs have included full roast beef, sausages and wedges, lots of leftovers etc and no MFP at all.

Exercised, still don't feel like brekkie (though have had lots of tea) - it's surprising how unhungry I usually feel on the day after an FD.

PeachandBlack · 14/03/2014 11:01

Have weighed myself Shock and recorded it on MFP so it's there, no escaping or denying it!

Today is the start of my 5:2 week but I won't be fasting until next Monday. I do need to start logging NFD calories though.

mummyof2girlsx · 14/03/2014 11:06

Excellent zed!

Thanks ErrolTheDragon Thanks Well done for maintaining, its good knowing we can eat lovely foods and use fasting to undo any potential gain Grin

Eatriskier · 14/03/2014 11:16

Ah ha. May have cracked this maintaining malarkey. Fingers crossed it doesn't impact on my pernicious anaemia though. Am hoping that a few 16:8 healthy days will be enough for the good benefits.

Nice nsv zed

Happy anniversary mummy

Well done peaches. My dh started the same way. Though at least you know that be the last you'll see that pesky figure whilst on this woe at least

womblesofwestminster · 14/03/2014 11:26

Just had my 1000 calorie weekly 'treat' (as sanctioned by BigChoc Grin ), a BIG bog of Maltesers ate in 2 sittings. I did enjoy it, however now I feel bloated and sluggish.

Going to do a mini fast until supper time.

In other news, my 3 year old is throwing up :(

womblesofwestminster · 14/03/2014 11:27

box* of Maltesers, not bog Shock

zed great NSV. Your Littley's nursery report reminded me of this:

An English couple adopt a little German boy. His second birthday comes and goes, as does his fourth, fifth and sixth birthdays, and he has still not uttered a word. The English couple figure that he's never going to speak, but hey ho, he's a lovely child.

At his seventh birthday party, they throw a big party with lots of chocolate cake. The little boy suddenly says "Mother, Father, I do not like the icing on this cake."

"My God" they cry, "you can speak? Why have you not spoken before?"

"Well" says the boy, "up until now everything has been satisfactory."

(Apologies to any German MNers in advance).

womblesofwestminster · 14/03/2014 12:31

lol Megrim

BigChocFrenzy · 14/03/2014 12:36

Glad you can maintain now, *Eat.

To feel stronger, do you think you'd like to add a bit more muscle ?
^^

Welcome Peach. Sounds like you're preparing well for this WOE.
Do post here for support, especially the first few FDs.

Hi all,
don't post on my behalf, but well worth a giggle while having a cuppa

TalkinPeace · 14/03/2014 12:45

Have taken a week off fasting due to work.
Looking forward to getting back to it next week.

tiggermummy70 · 14/03/2014 12:54

well done on jeans zed. Grin

I tried a pair of size 12 trs on at w/end and the only reason they don't do up is the apron! It is where I carry most of my spare weight......

however the skinny next 14r's that I bought a year ago by mistake. I can do up!!!!Smile

Small announcement I am Overweight according to four different websites.

Advice needed for today.

Due to me being boss at work today all I have had is three coffees n about 150ml of skim milk.
missed breakfast shake and about to miss my lunchtime porridge.
I have first trip to gym tonight for induction its an hour so do I have lunch late around 2ish and then have my shake after gym tonight?
I still need to eat a meal and another shake before bed.
or leave it all until tonight. shakes are about 150cals.

TalkinPeace · 14/03/2014 12:56

do you need the shake or just want it?
drink lots of water and you'll be fine, then have a good meal before bed

tiggermummy70 · 14/03/2014 13:09

If it was just my choice I would probably skip it, but I am doing this research project so I am expected to eat three meal replacements (shakes, soup or porridge) plus 450mls skim milk and now a meal of 80g of veg and 180g protein before I go to bed.

was wondering if I would feel better having shake after gym or have it with afternoon coffee?

TalkinPeace · 14/03/2014 13:11

prob before the gym then Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 14/03/2014 13:17

TiggerMummy If you think you have enough fuel to go full blast at the gym, then have the shake after training.
Otherwise, drink it this afternoon

Help ! Massive hair disaster !!!

Handholding needed before I strangle that effing incompetent hairdresser cow
Angry Angry
You know that SpecSavers ad where the sheepfarmer accidentally shears his dog as well as the sheep ?
Well, I look like that poor bloody bewildered dog.

Last few months, I've had a dramatic wedge hairstyle, which I really like, with the hair shaved at the lower rear bit of my head & around ears.

Last night, I needed an 8 weeks trim & tidy, so to be safe, I showed her on my iPad the picture of a model with the wedge hairdo I had - should be foolproof, right ?

She dampened my hair and pinned it up in several bunches, so I didn't realise she shaved off the wedge too.
I now have a short back and sides with shaved lower areas - AAARGHHHH !!!
Angry Angry

Even my MALE colleagues noticed: "Wow, that's seriously short !"
People keep their distance, because big muscles, sportswear & skinhead hairdo add up to scary psycho at large.

I hid my head afterwards in several kg of pasta, cheese & chorizo, so

  • today is an emergency FD,
  • I'm farting chorizo for England
.... - and my head is effing freezing. Sad Sad ^^

It'll take 6 months to grow back the wedge !

Angry Angry Sad Sad ^^

All I can think of BigChoc, is a hat. Something like this perhaps?

Thanks Brew Deep breaths.

WineFor you.

Perhaps your hair will grow out faster than you anticipate?

Megrim · 14/03/2014 14:04

Ooh BigChoc - just go for clippers all over. You might surprise yourself and really like it? It's the way I've gone, you can soften the effect with a bit of mascara and lippy.

TiP I've been giggling away at your AIBU thread (that's the dark side, zed). It's like fishing with dynamite. I figured that you were a big girl and knew exactly what you were doing Smile
