Fasting / 5:2 diet

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Eveesmummy I had visions of you camping out in the bed section of some big furniture shop, sneaking out for a dirty burger on the sly.

Mazzle a couple of times I've pretty much maintained for two or three weeks, although with inch loss, and then next time I stand on the scales there's a big lump of weight come off. Keep going!

TwittyMcTwitterson · 15/03/2014 10:09

Erm, I probably would do that you know!

I'm filthy. We had a binge last night. Tesco have an offer on so I bought 42 2 finger kit Kats thinking they'd last forever. We have 4 left. Dog ate ten with wrappers when we went out tho...

BetsyBell · 15/03/2014 10:12

Guardian article on why women need to be slimmer when peri/post menopausal. I know there are plenty out there stating they are overweight but healthy, but beyond a certain age this this is rarely the case.

We all know this stuff, but it bears repeating. Don't worry about the weight coming off slowly or a few weeks maintaining, just as long it's going generally down rather than up you are doing wonderful things for your body.

And don't forget all the marvellous repair work happing behind the scenes when you are fasting (or as my DH put it "rejuvinating your bits and bobs")

BetsyBell · 15/03/2014 10:15

evees Why on earth did buying 42 low grade chocolate bars seem like a good idea???? [baffled face]

MazzleDazzle · 15/03/2014 10:23

(Eagerly awaiting new thread title.)

BetsyBell · 15/03/2014 10:29

mazzle I haven't got a very exciting one planned I'm afraid. Prepare for disappointment.

I'm not including any junk food outlet stuff in it that's for sure bleugh!

Why do you all like that stuff when you could eat SALAD with a side of more SALAD?

Please don't answer that - there's a whole thread out there devoted to the topic I hear... Wink Grin

Eatriskier · 15/03/2014 10:41

betsy can you work in dirty burgers somehow?

BetsyBell · 15/03/2014 10:45

Nope. Refuse on the ground it makes me want to puke eat! (sorry all)

It's going to have a spring theme because I am SO FECKING HAPPY IT'S FINALLY HERE Grin

Boring but nice (sorry again)

BigChocFrenzy · 15/03/2014 12:04

Interesting link, Betsy, especially for those of us post-meno - anyone else here, btw ?

The Guardian had another study showing people more likely to be overweight if they live near fast food joints FastFood

I'm lucky that the only fast food when I was growing up was fish and chips. Also, very little sweet junk available.
Food was a much higher % of average income, so less opportunity for bingeing pn even healthier food.

I think it was my 20s when I really noticed fast food joints became common, so late 1970s-early 80s.
Also when I noticed suddenly that folk had became overweight

Grin Dirty burgers !

CiderwithBuda · 15/03/2014 13:06

Interesting article Betsy.

I'm post meno. Turn 50 in May. And have been over weight since my 20s. I'm noticing more aches and pains. My legs and particularly knees hurt. I'm very aware that I need to shift this weight. Vanity reasons but more importantly health reasons. I drink too much wine so have cut down on that as I know I'm nt doing my health much good with that.

My DS is only 12 and I want to be around for him and healthy and active. And hopefully be here for any grandchildren!

Haven't read the MacDonalds thread but I have to admit I enjoy it occassionally. We live in uk but my family are in Dublin and usually only have it coming through Dublin airport. I know it's dirty but no harm very occassionally. Although even DS has started to chose a sandwich instead sometimes.

I was the same BigChoc with only takeaway being fish and chips. We did have chips a lot though.

NFD day for me here and out for dinner tonight at a friends house. Was out at ideal homes exhibition yesterday so eating and drinking wasn't great! Feeling in control though as I know I will be back on track on Monday. Planning three fasts next week.

Off into town now. Happy Saturday all!

PrimalLass · 15/03/2014 13:44

I was listening to them talking about the fast food report on Radio Scotland. I do agree - we live in a village and getting a takeaway is enough of a hastle (only a 5-mile drive but still a pain) that we don't really bother. Was a lot more likely to do it when I used to get off the bus outside the local Chinese restaurant.

7lbs down now. Have 2 NFD now until Monday, and I am scared that I will put loads on. I still can't get into the mindset that it will all stay off eventually.

PrimalLass · 15/03/2014 13:46

OH and the kids are having McDs tonight though as they will be on their way back from the football. As I don't eat wheat it is easy to avoid it. I'll have chicken and salad, probably washed down with a large glass of cold sauv.

womblesofwestminster · 15/03/2014 14:01

Good afternoon fellow fasters :)

I've just cried with laughter at the gym. My friend was sitting on this machine. The convo went like this:

Me: I find that machine really hard.
Her: Yeah, it is very challenging.
[splitting noise]
Me: What was that?
Her: Oh shit, I've just split my pants!!

There was a massive split down her crotch.

I bet when she said she comes to the gym to get ripped, she didn't intend it that way! Hahahaha!!!

Anyway, sorry, where was I...

I wonder what you guys think of the Set Point Theory of weight management.

Please, share your thoughts!

BigChocFrenzy · 15/03/2014 14:06

As occasional treats, I love Costa's toasted cheese and ham sandwich, also their banana & nut mini-loaf.
Or those stands with frozen yoghurt, choice of fruit and nut toppings

I find ff burgers to be horrible inedible smelly lumps - have you seen one cold ? Major yuk
Confused
Ooh, I hope we aren't nauseating any vegans on thread.

womblesofwestminster · 15/03/2014 14:10

BigChocFrenzy do you find that machine challenging? It's one of the hardest imo. Not that I've ever split my pants on it Grin

Tell me what you think of Set Point Theory! I discovered it recently and it's scary.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 15/03/2014 14:15

I don't like posh chocolate. Generally, I only like food if it's dirty Shock

Also, they were £2 for 21. I mean, is that a bargain or is that a bargain? Dd loves them. 107 calories for one little bit of naughtiness sounded good. Binge monster took over...

PrimalLass · 15/03/2014 14:42

I very much think my body likes a set point. There are markers that I struggle to get past. I am at one of those today, which is why I am nervous about it.

womblesofwestminster · 15/03/2014 15:07

Me too PrimalLass

However (thankfully) I have read that it is possible to reset the Set Point to a lower point. This can be done if you maintain a lower weight for a prolonged period (I'm talking about a year), then your body adjusts its expectations.

I find Set Point Theory compelling.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 15/03/2014 15:10

Haven't looked at set point theory but it sounds like what I'm at. Always sit around this weight regardless. What do they suggest we do to push past it? GrinGrin

womblesofwestminster · 15/03/2014 16:14

EveesMummy from what I've read, when you try to get below your set point, your body will reduce your metabolism in an effort to cling to the fat. You'll also get tired more and feel cold more easily. Does that sound like you? It sounds like me! To rev up your metabolism folk such as BigChoc suggest HIIT. Do you do any HIIT?

Southeastdweller · 15/03/2014 16:48

When I was growing up, as with cider and BigChoc* we never went to fast food places but we had the occasional fish and chips meal. I'm feeling grateful in hindsight because I never got the taste for takeaways and the food that McDonald's and that kind sell, not even as a student, especially when I think of where I live now has about a dozen of these places within a two minute walk. Eating out treats in the 'low-end' bracket are now still the occasional fish and chip lunch (then I skip dinner) and fruit bread at Starbucks. I much preferred home cooked meals then and still do.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 15/03/2014 17:02

Always cold, always tired! Don't do that no. I did buy an exercise DVD with it in but no ideal time to do it as in morning my stomping etc wakes DP up and at night dd 'tries' to join in with me. After she's asleep DP is in living room and don't want him to see. Tempted to join gym.

South, my parents never really took me to takeaways or dirty places. UNi made me filthy. Still have a student mentality to food a lot of the time Hmm
