Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Megrim Clippers all over is basically what she's done, except the lower bits are totally shaved.
I can't pinch any more on my head than on my waist
Sad

How short is the top? Is it a really short crop on the top too?

ErrolTheDragon · 14/03/2014 15:27

Oh dear. It would probably be a shade worse if that happened to some of us feebler looking mortals, if anyone did that to me the most logical inference would be chemo. Flowers (I typed [glowers] first, that's for your hair-butcher).

I had a friend who did his own hair with clippers set quite high...until the day when he forgot that he had to put them on the lowest setting to put them back in their case and mowed a bald strip from forehead to crown - so he had to take the lot off.

Peplum41 · 14/03/2014 16:05

Never cast a clout til may is out hurrricane. Not so grand today, happen I can't see t' tower.

Trundles off to flame tip on her thread. He he.

Peplum41 · 14/03/2014 16:07

What's the eck that's hair cut choc are you in 90s boy band?

BigChocFrenzy · 14/03/2014 16:09

It's really short (more OK for a bloke) on top, then shaved around the ears and from halfway down my head at the rear.
Not quite chemo - but effing spartan

Well, trying to be positive:

  • I won't need my headband for training
  • I'll scare the crap out of the CrossFit hunks (but I do already)
  • after my daily evening hairwash, I will only need a quick wipedown to dry.

healthy stuff is more uncomfortable than junk

  • My typical pre-52 comfort binge of 200g choc, 4 cheesecakes, 6 cookies, 4 donuts was about 6000 cals, but had far less bulk
  • This morning, I was 4kg heavier.

I know that'll go in a few days dumping .

But, my tum was sooo uncomfortable all morning and I had to leave a meeting 3 times to dump a few kg chorizo pasta and let out enormous chorizo farts (sorry, TMI !)

Thinking of chemo: those women are really suffering, so I'll stop wingeing now.

Megrim · 14/03/2014 16:24

Bit of gel to rough up the top and it'll look fine.

First time I had my hair cropped it was waaaay shorter than I had intended, but now I love it. DH keeps threatening to get the clippers out and do it next time for me.

TalkinPeace · 14/03/2014 16:46

(((( Bigchoc ))))
I'm a long hair person, but I'd have thought that spiking it to make it look slightly taller and more random and then hope its sunny so the growth rate speeds up.

THe McD thread arose from my excellent lunch with Laska yesterday where we both chose healthy cos we felt like it ...
and I noticed that fat people bought chips and thin people bought salad - but I've not typed that on AIBU yet Wink maybe after Wine Grin

BetsyBell · 14/03/2014 16:52

bigchoc How about one of those head bands they put on baldy baby girls? Might soften the effect Wink

zed! Those 16s will be way too big in no time Grin

BetsyBell · 14/03/2014 17:14

tip I saw your thread yesterday Grin. For the record, my kids think McDs is gross and would consider having to eat there a punishment rather than a 'treat'

BigChocFrenzy · 14/03/2014 17:29

5:2 Stork
Lucky ladies(lurking ?): may I ask if you did 5:2 / ADF / 16:8 ?

Really interesting how these threads confound conventional "wisdom" about IF being bad for fertility.

Almost all IF human studies were ADF, not 5:2 though
Also, only the rat studies were long enough to check fertility (and rat studies are only applicable to politicians)

Betsy Grin Even as a baby, I never looked that angelic, think "Delinquent in Diapers"

Megrim · 14/03/2014 18:04

TiP neither of my kids are fussed about McDs (or Burger King) either. DS1 (the swimmer) would much rather have Subway or failing that KFC (yuk) as fast food on the way home from a meet (he is suddenly starving and has to eat RIGHT NOW).

Both kids love seafood (the uglier the better - octopus and monkfish?) and would choose fish or shellfish with good veg given the choice. If I ever order scallops I have to watch the little one as he'll nick mine when I'm not looking.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/03/2014 18:28

The only time I've taken my DD to a McDs was for a friend's birthday -she didn't like chips till quite recently. (Wish she had a seafood habit - the only thing she'll eat that comes from the sea is nori.) Of late McDs is a sort of treat for her in that if she does something in town after school with her mates they might go there... the treat is eating with them rather than parents rather than the food!

Helliecopter · 14/03/2014 18:49

The only reason DD1 likes "old McDonald's" is because it's got a soft play bit in it. We went recently when my car went for it's MOT and the garage was across the road. We had no broadband at home at the time due to a huge issue with O2 and openreach so we went to kill time, abuse the free wifi and for her to play. She had a bagel with jam and loved it...now wants to go every time we go past the bloody place, which is every damn day!

Me...today I'm back to hoovering. I'm a woman possessed. At least I am hoovering less than I would in a usual session, this more like a "normal" pre 5:2 day and will probably work out about 2500. Planning a run tomorrow morning (although having a Croma pizza lunch - Mancunians should know what fab pizzas they do!) and probably one on Sunday as well! Sunday lunch with family. Planning to skip brekkie both days. May need to write off this weekend!

ErrolTheDragon · 14/03/2014 20:10

I've had a lovely NFD eating leftovers - heated up potato wedges, roast parsnips and a Yorkshire (how did that happen? leftover Yorkshire? Confused) with beef and gravy for lunch and a pile of roast med. veg with lots of basil and a sliced up sausage topped with breadcrumbs (even that was a wholemeal crust!) and the ends of various bits of cheese and grilled. Very tasty. The leftover apple crumble had already disappeared unfortunately.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 14/03/2014 21:14

I love mcdonalds because it's dirty. It's also two seconds from my house and they have a poundsaver menu. It's not a 'treat' as such but I do always buy something dirty around payday.

tiggermummy70 · 14/03/2014 21:28

thanks for earlier advice. I survived the gym induction. glad I had one shake before as I was really shaking waiting for him to meet me but I am going to put that down to nerves.
I've eaten my grilled chick n veg on way home.

so as long as I get my two shakes in now I will have done my first 16:8.
Apparently he reckons I am fitter than I think. I was his first client as he is new to gym. think he has vested interest in me doing well Grin

Eatriskier · 15/03/2014 07:11

errol I do not understand. Leftover yorskshires? [comfused]

Giggling away here at dirty mcdonalds. mcdonalds was always a treat for me but only because I lived in a small town which at that point hadn't been infiltrated by them (and still hasn't to some extent as there is only one on the outskirts) and nothing similar to them particularly either. So when we went to the nearest big town we were sometimes treated to them. Now I'm surrounded by them and BK and others, none seem like a treat. Except KFC. I love a bit of KFC.

BetsyBell · 15/03/2014 07:41

If the 5:2 stork comes anywhere near me I strangle the bastard!

A very interesting question though from bigchoc upthread - we do seem to have had our fair share of desperately wanted pregnancies happening a few months into 5:2 haven't we? Grin

TwittyMcTwitterson · 15/03/2014 07:49

Eat riskier, where I live is a nightmare. Mcdonalds and dominos are super close. 5 mins away is... Pizza Hut, mcdonalds, KFC, Frankie and bennies, harvester, subway and costa coffee. All in one small area! Hmm

Megrim · 15/03/2014 08:15

Eveesmummy do you live in a retail park? Grin

Eatriskier · 15/03/2014 08:40

evees where I live now is similar. Though now I think about it I believe Costa and Dominos have made it into my home town. Not really bad going by the town council I reckon. They refused on snobbery purposes for years, now I bet a few more towns regret not being snobby!

MazzleDazzle · 15/03/2014 08:51

I've maintained for 2 weeks now. I know this is to be expected though. Tbh I'm nibbling and snacking on things I shouldn't be. On the plus side at least I know I can maintain and I'm at the lowest weight I've been in four years.

Have been keeping track of my measurement and I am getting thinner, just not lighter.

Having a NFD here, then FD tomorrow and aiming for healthier choices next week.

Megrim your last few posts have made me chuckle!

TwittyMcTwitterson · 15/03/2014 09:05

It is a retail park, but alas, I do not live IN it. It's a 2/3 minute drive tho. I think we'll be visiting today... Shock I'm a pizza slut for Pizza Hut
