Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Good for her errol Have you seen the 'slightly damp' shirts? Made me Grin

FridayJones · 13/03/2014 10:45

Just popped myself into bed at 9:30pm on my FD (antipodean), to get myself further from the fridge and read this thread t get me over that last hump.
Roll on tomorrow. Night FD, NFD and BFP ladies.

NotHoldenCaulfield · 13/03/2014 11:22

hopefulgum Congratulations!! That is such fantastic newsGrin. Will be thinking of you and your bean.

Think this WOE has an effect on TTC. We had eight long years between DD1 and DS with a lot of heartache along the way. Then I started 5:2 and conceived DD2 nine months after giving birth to my miracle babyGrin. She is now a happy bouncing seven month old. My husband is fully convinced the fasting had an impact as it was statistically very unlikely to ever happen again!

Hurrah for all the 5:2 babies!!!

BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2014 11:37

Miffy Some folk lose the first chunk of weight doing a fairly casual version of 5:2, but then find that to lose the next bit they have to watch NFDs more carefully and / or increase exercise intensity

OP posts:
Eatriskier · 13/03/2014 11:40

No fasting for me again today as scales showing not enough of an increase in weight to warrant it. Will be another 16:8 no junk day instead though.

JoJoMojito · 13/03/2014 11:50

Fab news hopeful Smile

I had an unintentional semi FD yesterday, my first one as I do daily 16:8 instead. For some reason I just didn't want much to eat and by mid afternoon I realised I'd only had a skinny latte and a graze breadstick thing so only 200 cals. So I thought I would have a M&S ready meal & veg for tea and see how it went... Total for the day was just under 800 with very little effort/grief. What a surprise! I even managed my usual run & weights this morning with no ill effects and have just enjoyed scrambled eggs on a muffin & coffee. Perhaps I shall switch to 5:2 after all...

Mazzle re the Beast, being in a team will be such a great experience. I will have to ask a hunky man total stranger to hoick me up & over the obstacles.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2014 12:02

bigchoc or a chastity belt Wink

Octopus37 · 13/03/2014 12:28

Did a FD yesterday, just ate soup (2 cartons, total calorie count of 440) and a piece of pineapple. Sorry TMI but had the runs a bit last night and today have had some awful stomach cramps, fist thing this morning as soon as I was eating breakfast then when I was picking my DS up from nursery. Wierdly still felt a bit hungry so have eaten two pieces of toast with sugar free peanut butter (had same for breakfast), but was wondering if anyone else had experienced this after a fast. Quite unpleasant and the only way I can get any real relief is by lying down.

MazzleDazzle · 13/03/2014 12:34

Funny you should say that Eat, someone once started a thread having purchased a chastity belt and got flamed!

I am a very open minded person, but even I was Shock at chastity belts for men and women!

Whatever floats your boat though. Who am I to judge!

(feeling slightly Blush for lowering the tone of the thread and possibly offending any chastity wearing fasters)

PrimalLass · 13/03/2014 12:47

Crikey at the chastity belt thread. I am following one of her other threads at the mo - livens up a dull day.

I have just had a haggis ready meal for lunch Blush It was lovely.

Eatriskier · 13/03/2014 12:54

That is a phenomenal thread [mazzle]. It seems she has an affinity for entertaining threads!

Eatriskier · 13/03/2014 12:54

Sorry, no idea why I tried to link you rather than bold you...

TwittyMcTwitterson · 13/03/2014 13:13

I have fucked off this fast day. Had a chocolate covered flapjack for breakfast and am now waiting for chips. Maybe tomorrow. I feel sad. And now I feel sad for giving up but I'll turn it around Wink

zedzedzed · 13/03/2014 14:13

Wtf? Kinky fasting, chastity haggis and chocolate flaps for breakfast? Step away from the big pile of crazy, people, fasting clearly makes you filthy, skinny and up the duff; a lethal combo in anyone's books.

LO fast so far, done softplay (non-kinky) Guinea pigs (non chocolatey) and playpark (a bit stinky).

Need more coffee to get me through to dinner.

womblesofwestminster · 13/03/2014 14:20

I feel sad.

What's done is done. Onwards and upwards!

NotHoldenCaulfield · 13/03/2014 14:21

Fast day here too. Could eat a scabby dog actually!

This is the first ever fast day where I considered jacking it all in. Watching DH consuming my lovingly prepared Lamb Tagine for lunch accompanied with exclamations of enjoyment not helping!!

Anyway, instead more water, more black coffee and busy, busy, busy. We will all make it through. We don't leave fasters behind...!

ErrolTheDragon · 13/03/2014 14:28

I'm doing OK LOF so far - need to go and get some more drink and my miso.

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 13/03/2014 14:42

Woohoo hopeful, fab news! Hope it all goes swimmingly for you Thanks

I'm doing OK at the minute surprisingly, had a FD on Monday and yesterday, got one tomorrow and then have weekend off and finding it alright most of the time although got a leaflet through for offers at dominos that I'm studiously ignoring!

The scales are saying a loss from when I started (about 25lb) but I can't see/feel it in myself just yet, does anyone else have that? I just think I still look hugely fat and that there's no difference

zedzedzed · 13/03/2014 14:53

Yeah badger all the time and no matter what people say.

I've dropped about that much too so far, but I also think I hadn't realised just quite how huge I'd gotten, so even though it's a great loss, I still see the long, flabby road ahead sometimes and feel very tired.

But then I remember the little victories (smaller bras, almost jeans, not eating all the chips) and I remember about the guiltless cheese I'll eat tomorrow and I think, fuckit, this is brilliant, so what if it takes a while, if I choose to I can I'll get back to where I was before and then I need never be fat again; i can be off the merry go round.

And there IS a difference, 25 fecking pounds of badger is a lot of culled fat.

Come on Thursday fasters.Only FOUR more hours till dinner.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2014 15:06

Badger 25 lb is great, nearly 2 stone. Well done and be proud of yourself.
Visualise 25 lb of cheddar cheese in your shopping trolley - ooh no, I love cheese !

As well as the scales, monitor your waist at the narrowest part.

You are doing brilliantly, just look at the inspirations thread to see how others lost loads of weight over many months.

Guys, anyone here taking supplements? I've bought some magnesium and zinc tablets in an effort to curb my hormonal acne - however, before I start taking them, do you know if Zinc causes weight gain? I've read that it does Confused

BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2014 15:13

Zed Great attitude. Just have patience, learn good habits and that weight will steadily disappear, never to return

(unless the 5:2 stork lands on your doorstep too)

OP posts:
Megrim · 13/03/2014 15:41

If that stork comes anywhere near me it'll eat lead.

zedzedzed · 13/03/2014 15:52

Thanks big when I look at my wee girl I know I won't give up on this as I will NEVER let her see this body or my discomfort with it nor the crap binge/starve habits I've learned.

Me too meg but I'll blast his feathery face off first!
Actually, I'd love a 3rd baby, I just don't want to grow or birth it so will settle for the 2 (and a step) I'm lucky enough to have. Oh, and size 10 jeans of course. Grin
