Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

And yes it does go crispy.
Just beware of not over cooking it or cooking on too high a temp. It will blacken. If you undercook it will be sogs-Ville.

If you cook it around 150c for as long as it takes to crisp up. It will have a lovely translucent crispy quality of that seaweedy Chinese stuff.

Those proper Raw eating folk have dehydrators but an oven on low works well too.

Primal. Interesting. What are your best and quick paleo dishes.
And your store cupboard paleo dishes if there is such a thing.

I'm very interested in having a go.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 12/03/2014 22:12

Megrim, fancy seeing you here. I'm just parking my classic BMW and lurking.

Forever 21? When I was younger I wore knee high slag boots and a skirt where you could probably see my bum. I hope this prim and proper look is still 'in' in 14 ish years forDD.

Fast day tomorrow Hmm I've had four slices of toast for tea as we had nothing else in. Roll on payday

TalkinPeace · 12/03/2014 22:20

zed that's not fair to spring a step daughter on me when your profile page only has your weens! Guess we're evens because I have no idea what teenage girls are into.

hopefulgum · 12/03/2014 22:56

It is a fast day for me, but I won't be doing it today. I got a BFP yesterday!!!Grin

I am an old bird, and I am realistic, but also feeling optimistic. I will be back to fasting post pregnancy.

Thankyou so much for all your support! It's been really helpful.

Wow hopeful congratulations!

CiderwithBuda · 12/03/2014 23:26

Congratulations hooefulglum! That's a NSV if ever I heard it! Best wishes for a safe and healthy pregnancy.

I have a superdry and hollister fan too. I refuse to buy Abercrombie as the guy who owns it is such a dick. I bought DS a fake Abercrombie and I take great pleasure in that fact that it is a fake!

Just home from a nice evening at Zizzi's. Was super good all day. Did a 4.44 km walk this morning and then walked into town (30 mins) this evening to earn my wine! Had half a bottle of white and a skinny pizza and some garlic bread, followed by a decaf cappuccino instead of dessert. Will work out my cals later.

MrsFlorrick · 12/03/2014 23:48

Hopeful. Thanks Congrats!!! GrinGrinGrin That's great. Fingers crossed for a nice easy pregnancy.

Boleh · 13/03/2014 01:06

Many congrats from over here too hopeful that's great news Flowers

TwittyMcTwitterson · 13/03/2014 05:43

Is Abercrombie the really ugly guy who says only pretty ppl can wear his clothes?

Have no motivation today. Should have been dressed n ready by now but I'm still on bed having cuddles with DD and mumsneting Shock

Peplum41 · 13/03/2014 06:59

Oh so you were right to suspect being preggers hopefulgum, congrats. X x

BetsyBell · 13/03/2014 07:21

Hopefulgum CONGRATULATIONS!! How exciting Flowers

Did anyone notice we've got options for posting up pictures now (web only I think)?

MetellaEstMater · 13/03/2014 07:28

Congratulations hopeful!

Two FDs done for the week - Monday and Wednesday. Yesterday was really hard for both DH and me for some reason. I'd rather leave two days in between but our Thursday night tv fest and red wine ritual doesn't allow it and DH refuses to fast on a Friday!?

Megrim · 13/03/2014 07:31

Cider hate to break it to you but Hollister is part of Abercrombie & Fitch (bit like Old Navy and Gap).

You're right about the CEO that said he didn't do women's clothing over a size 10 or clothes for unattractive people. He's a knob, but he did make an apology for it (about 7 years later).

DS has an Applecrumble & Fish t-shirt Smile

zedzedzed · 13/03/2014 07:35

Grin Grin Grin HOPEFUL!!!
Wow. MEGA congratulations on your BFP, wonderful news. We'll have everything crossed for a sticky little bean for you. Hoorah! You must be ecstatic.

Ahem ahem...so where have meg and evees been? On Mumsnet for Fetishists? Hmmm.

Thanks Mrs F it's on my shopping list now.

FD here today, all alone with the babies and NO planned activity for the day. Gulp. I gotta think of something to do with them or the ham will find me and I'll end up all nibbly again. Think I'll have to bite the bullet and catch a bus to softplay, despite the tempting cafe there.

Happy starving folks, have a good 'un.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/03/2014 08:18

Congratulations hopeful. Wow, there probably should be a thread just for people-who-were-52ing-till-they-BFP'd - there seem to have been quite a few!

I've got a 15yo DD who is totally not into any of those labels - she says they are for sheep people who think they're cool but really aren't. She does have one Hollister jumper, a birthday gift from friends, it's black and red stripes so the effect is more Dennis the Menace than fashionable ... suits her! Grin

FD for me, I feel in need after last night's sausage-fest. (really enjoyed them though, hopefully DH will polish off the leftovers before I get peckish)

Helliecopter · 13/03/2014 08:19

HOPEFUL!!! Congratulations, fab news. Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly for you.

NFD today for me. Must try to not eat everything in the whole house and beyond! Despite the pea-soup fog think I'll take DDs to the playground (try to ignore the ice cream van again!) and burn off some energy.

I used to love A&F but it's so expensive. I went in the shop in New York before the brand was in the UK and there were half-naked young, tanned, gorgeous men all round the store, and it smelled amazing. Spent a lot of time in there, strangely?!

Betsy I can see the pic options on the laptop version too Grin

TwittyMcTwitterson · 13/03/2014 08:43

Eeek, congratulations hopeful!!!! How exciting!!!!!

I can't afford any of those makes. I live in primark and Tesco clothes. I bloody love them. I also heard such makes are for sheep people who think they are really cool. That's what stopped me from getting a superdry coat. I think they look great.

LikeaHurricane · 13/03/2014 08:43

hopeful longtime faster/lurker and rare as hen's teeth poster here but I just wanted to add how so very happy I am for you and your wonderful news. I know from previous posts how much you want this so congratulations and here's looking forward to November/December?? So excitingGrin

Hey up Peplum, hasn't this Blackburn weather been grand, I had to take me mac off yesterdayGrin
Been very fortunate actually as I'm on leave this week so been enjoying the sunshine up that there tower!

Eatriskier · 13/03/2014 08:51

Mega congrats hopeful that is marvellous news

Beginning to suspect we need a new piece of standard advice. Have you gained weight for no reason or not lost for a few weeks with no reason? Feeling a bit lethargic and bloated? Try poas !

CiderwithBuda · 13/03/2014 09:45

Megrin - bugger! I didn't know that. I suppose I should have guessed as their shops are so similar.

FD here for me today too. Have had lots of tea so far. Planning steak and salad for dinner.

Off to work out yesterday's calorie intake. And then tidy house quickly and do some ironing. Fun day!

hopefulgum · 13/03/2014 09:48

Ha ha eat, it seems that 5:2 might be a prescription for getting up-duffed. It has been two long years since my last bfp.

I saw my GP today who was very smiley about it all, quite astonished that I managed it at my age, but for some reason is a lot more optimistic than me. I will be very surprised if I do have a baby, but I suppose that getting a bfp is a good start. We shall see.

Thanks everyone for such a gorgeous response, I feel very special. Thanks

Miffytastic · 13/03/2014 09:53

Hurray for Hopeful Thanks

I'm a bit peeved today - despite 2 xweeks of consecutive fast days I'm the same bloomin weight. Grrrrr. I'd have expected some movement. Wasn't weighing straight after FD as I usually do but still. Meh. I haven't been ridiculous on the NFDs, OK have enjoyed stuff but IIRC last year I managed to enjoy treats and sensible eating in the week and still lost. If I'm honest, I was running more than I am now so maybe that's the factor. Still annoyed though :/
