The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Thanks, Betsy, I may try them. Your wonderful curry will have me drooling tomorrow on Shock just remembered my FD, the first after my break.

I'll stick to my safest method: the nice boring Atkins shakes plus spicy veg juice. I can't eat delicious meals on FDs, or they won't stay FDs !

btw: Who else finds they only dream of savouries on FDs ? Sweet stuff is totally NON-tempting for me, especially junk offerings at work.
NFDs however ... Grin

75g of blueberries so still pretty virtuous. Shiny halo emoticon.

BetsyBell · 13/02/2014 21:59

My fast day cooking is often more interesting than on NFDs - forced to be creative due to restrictions.

I can manage fine without lots of food but I really need to be sated with deliciousness (always crave the savoury). My kitchen always contains plenty of ginger, limes, herbs and spices so I can get the biggest flavour bang for my 500 calories worth of buck. I guess it helps that I'm a pretty darn good cook too Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2014 23:04

Betsy - that sounds like one for the recipe thread, pretty please.

I'm still on the butternut squash and chorizo, but this time the latter was a spicier one which was good. Threw in some red pepper too.

I did fancy something sweet this evening and had a few calories spare so had a vanilla prune.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 13/02/2014 23:13

tip sorry about the fast day failure (or fast day rescheduling). Wine sounds nice though.

mrsf well done on getting in the old clothes.

zed glad your house is now plague free.

Bf and fasting seems to be going well. Ds has gone up from 60% percentile in weight to 70%. I don't go lower than 700 cals but I'm glad I'm obviously still producing enough milk.

My kids are bugging me too, dd is v cute but she won't leave me alone for a second. I spend my day quite literally falling over her. We went to a soft play centre and I spent the whole morning practically begging her to go off and play with other kids to give me some peace.

hopefulgum · 13/02/2014 23:21

Lovely to hear about SV and NSV. Was it MrsF trying on clothes from the charity bag, all fitting? Wow. Must have felt great.

Doris, sorry to hear you are having a tough time with the cravings. As someone who has them too, I do understand how difficult it is.Especially if it is carby, sugary things, as they seem to start a terrible chain reaction of more cravings. I did a "detox" thingy about 18 months ago which helped. But it was tough and required a will of iron.I stopped all sugar and refined carbs - I ate sweet potatoes, but not white potatoes or grain. It really did help kill off the carb cravings, but it was tough ( and it didn't last, as soon as I ate something sweet). I think hormones really do make a huge impact on us, and are not just an "excuse". This week has been bloody tough for me with cravings, and AF has finally arrived today. I had a fast day yesterday, but I just couldn't hold out and it became a low cal day instead of a fast day.Next week will be better.

I am also a big eater when I am tired. I am trying to learn to listen to my body and have a rest ( or try exercise) instead of shoving toast/chocolate/cake into my gob. On Wednesday afternoon I was feeling really tired and had planned on a swim after work. All I wanted to do was curl up with chocolate, but I made myself have that swim, and felt a whole lot better afterwards, and still ate the chocolate!

Tigermummy, can you take a thermos to work with you? You could fill it with coffee, tea, hot water (to make tea with different tea bags all day) or soup. It is the only way I get through the fast days - drinking herbal, black, green and white tea all day, with a vegie soup for lunch.

It was weigh-in this morning. Lost another 300grams. I know it isn't huge, but it is downwards, and that's all that matters, and if it was every week, by the end of the year I could lose around about 12 kilos, couldn't I? I know there will probably be plateaus along the way, but if I lose 10 kilos this year I will be absolutely chuffed.Grin

vvviola · 14/02/2014 00:02

FD postponed to tomorrow due to raging headache and grumpiness. Could maybe have pushed through it, but wouldn't have been fair on 2yo DD who would have borne the brunt of it.

Re-schedule is for tomorrow, when at least DD1 will be around to distract DD2! Will be my first attempt at a weekend FD, but seeing as DH is working for most of it, it actually won't be that much different than a usual day.

SunnySideOptimist · 14/02/2014 06:23

Regular day after fasting yesterday. Felt more in control of what I ate... "Do I really WANT that?" Hmm... Ran 3mi (slooooowly) and was ravenous afterward but ate a salad plus half an avocado and that did the trick... planning on fasting tmw as the weekend will be too difficult. Fasting seems to work best for me if I eat nothing at all until dinnertime. Lots of water, coffee, and tea, though. :) Hello all, and sending good vibes especialy to you, Doris-- this, too shall pass.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/02/2014 07:46

scales static at 58.5. Flickering down a notch rather than up like last week at least. Haven't been able to walk much because of the weather so maybe not too surprising.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/02/2014 07:48

(that's 58.5 kg of course! - 129 lb)

zedzedzed · 14/02/2014 08:05

Thanks Thanks again to all for the lovely support.

If Wednesday was challenging, yesterday was truly apocalyptic and I had a Full Feckin Breakdown...screeching,waling,hand-wringing and threats of dessertion. I really teetered on the brink of abyss yesterday; it scared me, and my kids and my DH; it's not fun watching someone crumble.

So...the upshot will be; some more help at home when possible, somehow getting some time on my own occasionally and some extra nursery for my boy...or I will need sectioned soon.,

Circumstances have conspired against us to make Jan/Feb truly crap,(heavy workload for DH with lots of nights away, temp accomodation overflowing with boxes packed for 2-3yrs and all covered in condensation mould, total isolation in Old Lady Village of Conservative Doom, plus renovation hell being never-ending, the fact that it's rained every day since December...and now plague) but like y'all said to Doris (((hugs)))

THIS TOO SHALL PASS

We're off to the building site again this weekend so no cooker except the micro, NFD here today and through till Monday, mostly coffee, toast, eggs, painkillers beans and soup planned so should stay within TDEE most days.

XXX

TalkinPeace · 14/02/2014 08:18

Happy slim valentines day folks.

I do not normally have my computer on in the morning but am researching prices for car tyres within two miles as that is the furthest the car will go ...
DH has had to take my car to work (3 hour drive)
Oh joy.

BsshBossh · 14/02/2014 08:29

Morning all. Sorry for not being able to reference everyone's posts... losing track of this fast-moving thread. Will try and catch up this weekend.

Just wanted to update: it's my second week of maintaining and I managed to maintain again at 3 lbs under target weight just doing 6:1. 5:2 has been so much part of my life this past year that it feels weird not fasting on Thursday anymore. But my Monday fast is non-negotiable (unless, that is, I lose weight).

Keep going everyone. 5:2 and 6:1 really works!

BetsyBell · 14/02/2014 08:30

Errol It's already there - look for Laska's aubergine chickpea and spinach curry recipe on the recipe thread. I used frozen leaf spinach instead of fresh. I'll pop the nigella seeds in yogurt idea on there though.

Christmas2013 · 14/02/2014 09:02

That recipe sounds really good - will try it out, we've always struggled to get fresh spinach here but have recently found somewhere that we can buy frozen so that would be good!

I just wanted to share me excitement at a combine SV/NSV - I get weighed once a week at my gym by my personal trainer and she's very sceptical about 5:2. I've been doing this now for nearly 4 weeks but with one disrupted week in the middle when we had friends staying. So with that plus her being on holiday yesterday was the 1st time she had weighed me 2 weeks in a row with good 5:2 in between and I'd lost just over 1kg :-) she looked rather shocked! Especially as she'd seen me drinking beer and eating 'bad' buffet food on Friday night!

I'm really determined to stick to 5:2 now to prove to her that it works! So far in the nearly 4 weeks I'm down 7lb :-)

DorisAllTheDay · 14/02/2014 09:16

Not2Be, thanks again for your encouragement - it's good to know that you're finding your binge episodes fewer and further between. And congratulations for climbing back onto the wagon.

Sunnyside , Zed and others, I'm going to try to say 'this too shall pass' when I get the cravings! Good first step this morning - I made it into work past all the newsagents and supermarkets without stopping off for carby treats. Muttering 'this too shall pass' as I high-tailed it past Sainsburys with that bakery smell wafting out, damn them. Zed I really feel for you with the toddler terror. My own are long past that stage now, but how well I remember feeling like I was being tortured - the worst stage was when DD1 was four and DD2 was two and a half. DD2 started with the toddler tantrums so DD1 decided to regress and have them as well. Grrrr. And I became a single parent and moved house to a completely new part of the country in the middle of all of that (was I mad?). I really hope you're able to get some help with your children and some time to yourself - it's so important to do that every now and then just to get some perspective. And that horrible feeling of about to crumble - just awful. Have some Thanks

I'm going to aim at TDEE -15% today. I decided I'd rather know the worst so I stepped on the scales this morning. 10 stone 4, which is bad (I was 9 stone 9 last Saturday!) but I actually thought it was going to be worse. I think around 4lb will be bloat, so my target is to get back under 10 stone by next Saturday.

almostthereagain · 14/02/2014 09:48

errol i think that's my target weightEnvyGrin
Well my weigh in this am & I have lost 4lbs since restarting in Jan. I have to say I'm a little bit disappointed as I hoped for a new low post fast today, & I was 2lbs lower last week. Nevermind, for me it's a 10 day break then back to it again.
bsh good to hear your latest news, can't wait until I'm in your shoes maintaining, I am always just almosttheragainAngry Better than fattereverymonth I guess!
Good start doris be kind to yourself. I find it helps to think of nurturing my body, giving it what it needs to work best. It helps me to think I'm trying to help it do its best, & I think of treats just as that, occasional. Sorry if that sounds ridiculous it really isn't meant toThanks Good luck!
Great SV christmas!

zedzedzed · 14/02/2014 09:55

Oh doris poor you, I've been exactly where you are many, many times in the past and I'm cynical enough to know I'll probably be there again as old patterns die hard, especially when life throws dung in your face and pizza seems the only cure...but your saying it out loud to people, even cyber people, is really brave and will have shortened your binge-time by days/ weeks/months and so your gain will be much less having had the balls to confess so soon. Hurrah!

PS I have previously gained 8lbs in ONE day!!!

womblesofwestminster · 14/02/2014 10:16

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY Thanks

I'm going to do a mini-fast before my Italian tonight (and by Italian I mean the food not some Italian bloke). No doubt I'll get stuffed (again, I'm talking about food).

You guys doing anything today?

MrsFlorrick · 14/02/2014 11:07

Happy valentines day ThanksThanksThanks

I hope all the other sick folk are still improving.

Eatriskier. With ref to low level infection. I've had a UTI whilst pregnant with DS that I couldn't feel. I just had nausea which was written off as morning sickness by GP. And at my check up with my Obs he found it and I felt a million times better after ABs. Didn't even realise it was there.

So yes you could easily have had something rumbling along giving you horrible random symptoms.

(((((Eatriskier))))). Brew With ref to thyroid being "normal". What's "normal" for one person is way out for another. Apparently it's very difficult to diagnose. Have a look on the health board on MN and post your symptoms just in case your GP missed it.

I've lost 2lbs this week so I am now at 68.5kg. (Does a happy dance).

Zedzed. Sad Wine For you! I'm sorry to hear you're struggling with everything. Keep posting. Or PM me if you like.

PoppyOzday13 · 14/02/2014 11:53

Encouraging to know the binge gene is still around after a year of 5/2. Sad, but encouraging that it isn't just me! I am telling myself that I am resetting, and starting again to try and shift downwards again. I don't have a problem having 2 FDs, but definitely crave carbs the middle of the next day.
Hope all you lovely ladies get through the trying days with your little ones, they are precious, this is a nanna speaking, very soon they will be looking after you!
A Happy valentine choccy to you all

Eatriskier · 14/02/2014 12:10

happy valentines day everyone

my gorgeous dh bought me a rather large box of charbonnel et walker dark chocolates. its definitely cheered me up, though I can't quite stomach the thought of eating any Hmm . Chinese tonight though and I'm planning on eating whatever I feel like and sodding the calories

mrsf that's very interesting on both counts. I need to see my gp about AF anyway given the morena situation so will pester them about that too. I know b12 works like that, some people function on clinically low levels with no problems and others like me can't cope when we drop near to clinical low.

MrsFlorrick · 14/02/2014 12:16

Eatriskier. Lucky you. Nice chocs. Wink

You can always have a quick google as there is a UK thyroid charity where you can have a look at symptoms. Worth investigating as GPs are not keen to diagnose thyroid issues because all your prescriptions for everything immediately become free as its an autoimmune disorder.

I have this from my hairdresser. She suffered with every symptom on the list but her GP kept telling her she was fine and her bloods were fine. She was diagnosed in A&E after her thyroid failed completely. Hmm

That said it could be as simple as a low level infection or even post viral symptoms. I've had that too. I was achy and worn out for about 6 weeks.

Perhaps it's actually because you're suffering from choc deprivation Wink so scoff some of those lovely expensive chocs your DH gave you. Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 14/02/2014 13:21

WhenSheWasBad Good to hear that you are BFing top quality milk on 5:2.
So, you are not too hungry on 700 cals. Did you start at 700, or did you work your way down from 1000 ?

Christmas I'm so glad you are proving your sceptical trainer wrong about 5:2.
Many gyms and trainers are still fixated on eating mini-meals every couple of hours. They are sooo behind the science of IF. Also, they probably don't like to admit that they've been giving wrong nutrition advice for years.
Good for you !

ErrolTheDragon · 14/02/2014 13:58

almost I bet you're taller than me though!

Whew, well just about to get some work done, good thing I'm PT. This morning after shredding etc we removed the large piece of conifer which was adorning our fence - luckily the biggest bit fell straight onto a fence post and also caught in a tree so not much damage. Quite fun chopping it up with the loppers small enough to get it in the car to the dump - glad we got it done, the weather is turning foul again.

Then into town - DD is off on school ski trip tomorrow, and we discovered last night that her beanie and neck warmer thingy had vanished without trace. Fortunately Mountain warehouse had the identical items as she chose two years ago at knock-down prices. I'm sure the originals will turn up!

So now something of a holiday for me too for the next week - I might have a FD on Monday, not sure; might try one of the other JM exercise dvds I've got - depends what else we decide to do. Smile
