The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Worst day in ages.

Soooo tired, DH's 'helping' was a disaster,a well meant Hell which has left the house a total sty and the kids all over the place and still no sleep for me as I could hear the chaos/screeching from bed despite the codeine and had to get up.

Both babies have been screaming at me for hours now, then DS shoved a whole sandwich in his gub when I told him to 'eat your bloody dinner or I'll bin it' then the poor bugger promptly threw it all up on his plate, at which point things reached an all time low when, as I tried to clean up the sandwich sick, the baby howls ratcheted up another screeching decibel and so I told my 7 MONTH OLD to 'just shut up' and shoved her dummy in.

So then I sat on the couch in floods while she howled for half an hour.

Excellent, I'm ready for my motherhood award now, thanks.

Just one of those appalling days when you need a do-over/rewind button.

PS sorry for the non-food-related moan-fest...ummm...NFD-wise I ate some toast at some point earlier but couldn't taste it, so I'm having a Lemsip now and praying for the strength to reach 7pm when I can go to bed with a milky drink (yes, to build up my mucus supplies but it may at least comfort me).

ErrolTheDragon · 12/02/2014 17:54

I'm ready for my motherhood award now

You really are, you know! Hope you get some decent sleep tonight.

B&W, the weather is currently working its way up through wales to me at the moment ... definitely not a night to be out and about.

SunnySideOptimist · 12/02/2014 18:14

Hello, I'm starting the 5:2 today! I tried (sort of) in early 2013 and it just didn't take, but I think I was over-dramatizing the fasting. I tried fasting one day a few weeks ago and found it surprisingly easy... perhaps more importantly, I found that my appetite the next day had "reset"--I had no urge to overeat.

So, I'm going for it.
Current data:
Age: 43
Gender: Female
Weight: 167 lbs
Exercise level: Run or do yoga approx. 3-5x/week. Plus walking the dog each day. I think I'm relatively active even though my job keeps me sitting.
Kids; 1, 8rs old
DH: Fit and healthy. Also a foot taller than I, so he can eat 2x as much!

I'm American so I have to convert the "stone" figures you put up, but I love England so I'm happy to do it!

It's 11am, I've already done an hour of hot yoga and have had some coffee and 2 glasses of water but that's it. Feeling good.

Thanks for being here. :)

ladybranston · 12/02/2014 18:18

zed - sounds awful! i hope you feel better soon, and don't worry, your kids won't even remember this a day from now. i hope everyone gets to bed early, and a good night's sleep works its usual miracle.

BetsyBell · 12/02/2014 18:21

(((((((((((zed)))))))) We've all been there and claimed that parenting award xxxxx

Jill Murphy tells it well in Mr Large in Charge - a familiar scenario for many of us!

Megrim · 12/02/2014 18:24

zed if the worst thing you've done is shout a bit then you're doing just fine. I know what you mean about DH helping, it's usually a disaster when it happens here.

BetsyBell · 12/02/2014 18:26

Welcome sunnyside :) Glad to have you here. Sounds like you're all set!

TalkinPeace · 12/02/2014 18:35

Zedzedzed
Cnsider yourself perfectly normal Grin

Sunnyside Welcome. And yes, my DH can eat loads more than me too!

SunnySideOptimist · 12/02/2014 18:43

Thanks, folks! I love the friendliness of this board.

And zed, in my experience, parents are always WAY too hard on themselves. You do deserve an award--just for coping and being there. :)

almostthereagain · 12/02/2014 18:45

Poor you zed I remember those days only too well, tomorrow it will all look a lot betterSmile
Welcome sunnyside
Today was supposed to be mast last pre hol fast- but I failedGrin
I felt like making a whole loaf of bread, turning it into buttered toast, curling up with a blanket & a pot of tea, I've lost my mojoBlush I should be so motivated & excited with a holiday to look forward to yet I'm just so fed up & cold I feel I need something more in my tummy.
Nevermind, I stayed away from the bread & I've yet to log the cals but it should be under TDEE, tomorrow will have to be last fast until after 1/2 term, yippee!
We are other end of SW B&W It's horrendous here now, must be what you had earlier today.

vvviola · 12/02/2014 19:00

Zedzed - we've all been there!

On the milky drink/mucous thing: DH has just been to the doc about a bad case of bronchitis. He asked her about the milk/mucous connection and she told him it was a myth, and said when she was growing up in China it was cold things they were told to avoid (because their diet didn't include much in the way of dairy anyway).

Long story short: she reckons it's absolutely fine to have a hot milky drink, and actually recommends it if it's a case of getting warm fluids in when you are sick Grin

Dotty342kids · 12/02/2014 19:09

So, fast day tomorrow again, assuming we don't all get blown away in the night Grin.
On the menu for tomorrow night (am salivating already) is pepper crusted salmon on a bed of garlicky spinach and chickpeas Smile

Breadandwine · 12/02/2014 19:46

Errol and Almost - hope the weather's passed you by safely. It's been a sunny day here - except for the continuing wind - since about 1pm. So you should get some respite soon.

Welcome SSO - as you've probably seen, we're all optimists here (eventually - here's a (((hug))) for you, Zed)!

About dairy - as you all probably know, I'm vegan (since I don't wish to maintain the cruelty of the dairy industry). When I gave up all dairy 7 or 8 years ago, within a couple of months my sinuses had dried up enormously. I found giving up cheese harder than giving up meat - but if ever I'm tempted I just have to remember how much better I feel now.

That is if I don't sit down too long! Grin An hour in the easy chair translates into 30 times round the dining room table. And if I sit on my kitchen stool typing for more than a minute (I set the kitchen timer - but sometimes switch it off absent-mindedly), that's about 5 times round. It really does do the trick - that and paracetamol, of course! Smile

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 12/02/2014 20:01

Poor you zed I read that post and just thought, yep I can identify with all of that. Small children are soooo much hard work, I'm generally quite calm but I've had lots of shouty moments too

Hi sunny

Weather is taking the piss up north. Wind is really strong, damage so far is aerial is buggered and the front bay window has been smashed to bits. Thankfully no one was in the room at the time.

HandMini · 12/02/2014 20:54

DontbeBlue, where are you? How did your fast day go? Hurray it's over, I'm about to go to bed with a mint tea and dream of eating tomorrow. I think I stuck to 500 today - about 4 cups of tea, 2 with skimmed milk. Nothing for breakfast, lentil and veg soup for lunch, brocolli and cauliflower soup for supper, a few bits of pepper, carrot and cucumber while I was cooking. Already planning coffee and croissant for breakfast. Well done today's fasters and good luck to those doing Thursday.

postmanpatscat · 12/02/2014 21:13

Well done on your loss tiredemma

zed you definitely deserve an award Thanks

Welcome sunny you've come to the right place!

FD over for me, it turned into a zero calorie fast in the end. Off to bed soon then up early enough for a tasty brekkie Smile

CheshireSplat · 12/02/2014 22:28

postman zero calorie fast??? No calories all day??? That is hard core.

And zed I felt for you. I shouted at DD on Sunday. She's only just 2 and I shouted *CheshireDD will you just stop whingeing?!". Bearing in mind she'd woken from a sleep to find her house invaded by 3 noisy boy toddlers she didnt know, who were in her house, playing with her toys. I could have cried I was so upset for shouting. When I apologised to her much later she gave me a kiss!!!

FD for me today. Easily the easiest and just clocked in at 495. Hooray. Not weighing in Feb so no idea about weight loss or not, but my trousers suddenly felt looser in Jan and they don't seem to be continuing that really good progress. So if I haven't lost in Feb I will start calorie counting on NFDs as I am being fairly relaxed at the moment and getting used to the FDs.

Not2bObvious · 12/02/2014 22:32

Evening all - 2 x nfds complete and within/smidge under tdee. Half planned FD tomorrow, just want it to be over and done so I can enjoy lots of yummy food wine in Friday. Making a big effort to keep away from the vino, god that sounds shocking but have been known to have the odd glass during the weekBlush but I think it's been my downfall, wine & nibbles go hand in hand for me.
Weathers shocking here too, stopped at the shop for essentials on the way home and managed to ignore all the half price choc/crisps even thought I was thinking it'd be nice to have a little munch all snuggled up but made do with an orange after dinner. I'm hoping to see a good loss after being back in the zone from last Friday, scales is already showing improvement. Here's to an easy FD for all of us fasting tomorrow!

BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2014 23:04

As a greedy hard-core cheese indulger (like Tip, MrsF) I also hope dairy doesn't increase mucous - I do always have mucous in throat / pipes, but GP said ypnks ago to just live with it.
Anyway, I wouldn't reduce my massive cheese fix unless warned death was otherwise imminent !

hopefulgum · 12/02/2014 23:06

FD here today. Yesterday I caved and bought chocolate. I think I was within TDEE so not too fussed. That bloody chocolate had been calling to me for three days now and I just had to have some (green and blacks, yum!).

I've got to have a fast day today as I am going away for the weekend tomorrow and really want to have some room to enjoy any culinary delights and champagne, but already wishing I could have some gluten free toast. I wish AF would just turn up already and let me be...

I can eat it tomorrow...I can eat it tomorrow...I can eat it tomorrow...

BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2014 23:07

Flowers
You are a super mum, but what you have had to suffer recently would exceed anyone's limits for patience.
Just accept you can't be perfect all the time (but never admit that to your DH !)

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2014 23:11

Well done for avoiding buying choc / crisps / junk, Not2b.
If you buy it, you either eat mindfully, or you dive in headfirst. Because you didn't buy it today, you deleted possibility number 2.

BetsyBell · 12/02/2014 23:13

As someone with a perpetually tap like nose I did briefly think, after reading b&w's post, perhaps I should try stopping the dairy.

Then I remembered the couple of years I spent being dairy-free. Don't recall my sinuses being miraculously clear though.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2014 23:16

Welcome, Sunny. I'm sure you'll enjoy it here. This is a very friendly thread, with loads of support.
