The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Most people need at least a couple of weeks to get used to fasting. Some take longer.

I had to do the first 3 months with 8-900 cal FDs, maybe because I train intensively. Everyone else seems to manage 500 cals much earlier than I did, but we each do 5:2 at our own pace. My FDs are usually easy now.

Marking spot, JM's no more trouble zones done, 16 hour fast done, party time!!! Have a lovely afternoon y'all

diabolo · 01/02/2014 13:36

After upping to 4:3 last week, I am happy to report that I lost 8 lbs in January, only another 14 to go.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 01/02/2014 13:50

Hi all

Its been a while since ive been on here, I need some motivation. Ive been fasting on Mondays really easily, but that's it. I have managed 16:8 most of the time.

I joined a gym this week and going today for a program to be set up. I would like lots of weight work with a bit of cardio.

This last week or so Ive been seeing my old habits come back. So when I went food shopping on Friday I bought no cakes or biscuits or chocolate. Im going to be very good again.

I measured myself today (with it being the 1st) and have the same measurements. I am however 2lbs lighter than what I was on 1st Jan. hopefully the weight work and gym will help me along my way a bit especiallly with losing the cms.

DorisAllTheDay · 01/02/2014 13:59

Oh no! I'm two pounds heavier than last Saturday. I knew I would gain a bit in my three-day conference thingy away from home eating and drinking bad things, but I've had two FDs and a sub-TDEE NFD since then so I thought I might at least have neutralised the damage. Ah well, let's hope for a better week this week. I'm planning three FDs (tomorrow, Tuesday and Friday) because next Saturday's my birthday so next weekend is certainly not for fasting.

Big picture, I've lost 11 pounds since the start of January. I know the first few pounds were Christmas and New Year bloat and therefore easy to lose, but still a very good result overall even with the two pound gain in this last week.

Happy birthday, Curveballs. Thanks Hope you have a wonderful day.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/02/2014 14:09

I'm fasting today and it's really really hard as I've got pmt.

I've eaten a bowl of very thick soup and had a small slice of bread so had 370 calories already.

I've got a massive moving round furniture project to do this afternoon and I'm about to doze off!

It's never been this hard, ever - in almost a year of doing it !

tiggermummy70 · 01/02/2014 14:53

marking my spot on the sofa Grin

have a good day all

MrsFlorrick · 01/02/2014 15:10

Afternoon everyone Grin

ThanksThanks For all your support re FIL situation. It's been v helpful. My head has been in a spin.

Forgot to weigh this am so don't know if I'm closer to goal this week (only 2lbs to go anyway).

Well done everyone on the amazing losses and NSV!!! So many uplifting tales from you all. Grin

My NSV this week was slipping on a old pair of DKNY size 6 (American 6 so a proper Uk 10 Grin) and finding they fit perfectly. GrinGrinGrin

I've not worn those in years. Bought as my "second day" outfit for the brunch the day after our wedding 7 years ago. I was under 10 stone when they last fitted like this

So that just shows how my muscle building is coming along. As I am almost a stone heavier than when the trousers were boyght but they fit the same now. GrinGrin

That's made my week a bit brighter.

DS isn't well. Poor lamb has a cold and don't we all jnow about it!!

DH and I are meant to be going to China Tang tonight for dim sum. Not sure whether to cancel as DS isn't 100%. So we will see....

MIL and FIL are stoic about the diagnosis and prepared for what may come without any fears or reservations. I guess at their age they've seen many friends either fully recover from cancer or be taken by it so they actually have a better idea of what's to come than DH and I.

FIL is having mRI and CT on Tues. DH flies up Thirsday to be with them for staging and treatment plan appointment on Friday.

I've got everything crossed for a good/hopeful outcome.

Again Thanks for all the support here (weeps with gratitude.).

And Bigchoc. I have been doing my JM everyday so I am back with your workout thread. And the ninja guinea pigs are ready for you anytime Wink

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 01/02/2014 15:12

Happy Birthday CurveBalls Wine

It's been a busy week moving house, meals out for sister's birthday and Spring Festival, so 2nd FD of the week was moved to yesterday (usually Mon and Wed). I have to say it was the easiest FD I've ever had and I think that's probably because I wasn't working, and spent the whole day cleaning and with a goal in mind. The problem with having an office job is I'm bored, so whilst FDs are alright, I think about food too much and am too aware that I'm fasting Confused

Exercise routine out the window this week too, so it's probably good I missed my weigh-in at work.

I may consider moving a FD to the weekend....????! Anyone else prefer that way?

BsshBossh · 01/02/2014 15:16

MrsF what a relief your DH can go up and be with them next week.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 01/02/2014 15:25

Well done on getting in the size 6s mrsF shame your ds is ill.

Bit of a victory today scales said 11.2 Shock Grin will have a calorie heavy weekend though as its dd's birthday. Fast day on Monday.

MrsFlorrick · 01/02/2014 16:55

Bssh. Yes. Thank you. Are you and minibssh any better yet??

Whenshewas. Thanks. Still not sure whether China Tang is on tonight or not.

DS is sitting scoffing the cheese and spinach muffins the DC and I made earlier and looks perky but he is sort of held up by calpol. Ugh the dilemma.

BsshBossh · 01/02/2014 17:05

Yes MrsF we're both slowly feeling a bit better.

almostthereagain · 01/02/2014 17:51

Aghh!! Can't keep up! Hello to newbies, get well sickies, well done losers & fasters, don't despair if you're on a plateau you WILL get thereSmile
& a huge congrats to dino Hope I haven't missed anybody...
Back several pages to the cheesecake talk, my all time fave. Hopeless & can't do links but have been thinking about doing the ultimate Angela Nilson recipe from Good Food, anyone tried it? Can't stop thinking about blimmin cheesecake since the Horizon programmeGrin

almostthereagain · 01/02/2014 17:52

Sorry, & thanks for new thread bigchoc

Dogmatix34 · 01/02/2014 18:25

Can I just ask, what is 16:8?

Eatriskier · 01/02/2014 18:37

Thanks for more of the Potty training ideas. It's a complete world of no one way working isn't it - like most thingsWink . My biggest problem is getting dh on board, he says yes and agrees then either doesn't do things or does something else regardless of whether he is involved in the decisions or no. I'm at the end of my tether quite literally with all 3 of them at the moment! Not helping that I'm tired and have put my back out.

Dd is perfectly able to not wee. We did the weekly shop today, no problems. We get home and after 15m she went despite having sat on the loo moments earlier. She has since continued to wee whenever she is wearing knickers. The only time she isn't weeing is when naked. She also knows not to wee in knickers. If we go to someone else's house though she is totally dry. She enjoys a new loo but is obviously bored with ours, nurseries and mils. She refuses to wear a nappy as she isn't a baby and I don't think forcing her down that route will help. Can't leave her knicker free either as nursery won't have that. The only thing I can think of now is reminding her to go and if she says no then wees then I time out her favourite toy. We've tried ignoring, we've tried discussing it, we have a star chart she is only interested in from time to time and at the moment doesn't care. It's either that or erecting something that gives her a mild electric shock when she wets

Lilliput · 01/02/2014 19:43

Well, I am over my 500 as found fasting at home quite tough especially on a wet and boring Saturday. However it wasn't an official fast day but I think I had that in the back of my mind which didn't help. I have resisted my dd's homemade chocolate muffins but did lick the spoon Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 01/02/2014 20:09

DontBeBlue Yes, I posted earlier that I usually have an FD or mini-FD at the weekend. I like one indulgent high-cal day to keep up my TDEE, but two together is too much.

OP posts:
Megrim · 01/02/2014 20:35

I had an indulgent day yesterday, and I wasn't at all hungry today, so at lunchtime decided that today could be a FD. Found that I could have a small slice of home made pizza with a big salad for tea, so that was all good.

Eatriskier have you thought about knickers for DD with a big pair of plastic pants over the top? You could explain that she's too big for nappies, but not really quite grown up enough yet for just knickers, so she'll still need the plastic pants for now. Hopefully she won't like the plastic pants and then you could explain that if she promises to keep her knickers dry she would be grown up enough to not need the plastic pants. You could also let her choose some special knickers with a cartoon character or something on them that mustn't get wet?

ernesttheBavarian · 01/02/2014 20:46

Yes, what is 16:8?

I managed my 3rd fast day but couldn't resist having a bit of a lick of the icing. I have coeliac disease so when I was baking with do I used normal flour so I wouldn't be tempted. But am dreaming of indulging in a gf carrot cake tomorrow.

I started 5:2 exactly this time last year but can't remember how long I kept it up. I am determined this time though.

Got a fit bit with my Christmas money and that's really motivation and activity.

Hope all the poorlies get better soon

bishboschone · 01/02/2014 21:01

I presume 16:8 is the same thing 8 fast days out of 16 .
