Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

postmanpatscat and BigChocFrenzy When you workout on fast days, are therre any side effects that you don't experience on non-fast days?

BigChocFrenzy What lifting do you do?

MrsFlorrick awesome news on the old clothes front! Well done! I bet it's excellent motivation! How old are your DC? My 3 yr old broke her arm last week (I mentioned it up thread) so I'm with you re: illnesses and small DC. I'm dreading half term! Not much she can do with a cast on.

Not2bObvious · 13/02/2014 13:10

Have a ball Almost - hmm 7 days, I can do 7lb in 7 days but I am a special piggy personWink
Thanks BC for seeing my victory at the shops. It's not hard when in in the zone, just need to stay in that mind frame most of the time and I'm sorted. FD today, JM completed this morning, all going good, resisted cake a while ago. Just keeping busy/hydrated. Putting the effort today so tomorrow I can enjoy my night.
Fellow fd'ers, hope it's going good. Halfway there Wink

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2014 13:17

Biblio - if its just the usual first 3-4 days of aching quads, people seem to be able to push on through.

Wombles 'What does the DVD involve? Why is it different from other approaches to exercise?' - it's 3 circuits of 3mins strength, 2 mins cardio and 1min abs with a brief warm and cool. The main difference from other forms of exercise IME is simply that because it's short and at home, people can actually manage to do it consistently - esp mothers with young kids who find it hard to get out to a gym or run.

Dotty342kids · 13/02/2014 13:22

MrsF that's an awesome loss, esp when your DCs are still so young! Well done Thanks

almostthereagain hope you have a lovely holiday, where are you off to? Am sure whatever you put on will come off again shortly after.

I am really struggling today. I just want to EAT! But coming on here and reading the messages really does help so need to keep doing that Smile, plus have 40th birthday party to go to Sat night and I'm determind to look as svelte as I can!

almostthereagain · 13/02/2014 13:40

Not2 I think I could easily achieve that sadly although I was surprised that I only put on a couple of lbs on last summer hol. I think the difference was that I was exercising regularly before I went away. I think this, as bigchoc was saying, makes a difference when taking a break. I feel that the lbs I have lost since I re started in Jan could easily fall back on. I have managed to tone up a teeny bit but don't feel at all strong & 'well' iykwim. Don't you feel like your body is working really efficiently when you are well & strong? Difficult to achieve at this time of the year esp with lo. wombles I did shred & it was the first time I think I ever stuck at any kind of exercise. It is really easy to fit in & gets you strong enough to try other things & learn that it makes you feel betterSmile I think it's on you tube for free.
dotty we are off to the Caribbean, Grenada am much more excited today. I struggled with yesterdays fast & gave up so will power on with you today (although I did just eat lunchHmm Just think of the good feeling when getting dressed for your party on Sat!

tiggermummy70 · 13/02/2014 13:58

I'm thinking ahead for post study.
sorry this might be long winded.

I work fulltime in London, girls go to school in London so we travel in as a family, have breakfast together then I head to work and Daddy takes them to school.
Because of study I don't eat at breakfast time, I have coffee on train and another while kids eat theirs.
I have break around 10:30-11 for 15mins
lunch is between 12-2 for 30 mins.
I finish work most days between 4.15-4:30 collect kids and go home. Depending on trains we get home around 6:15-6:30 feed kids so they are in bed as close to 7 as possible (they are up at 6:30)

I do average 5.5 miles a day in travelling plus at work. I don't get to sit at a desk for very long, and for some of my time I'm in a restricted area so if I want to eat I need to sit outside. No access to coffee. Sad

So how do you suggest I manage a fast day, I can't just go grab a coffee when I start getting hungry???

DorisAllTheDay · 13/02/2014 14:01

OK, haven't had time to read all of the messages since I was last here, but just dropping by to say I'm in complete food hell. I've been overeating massively and compulsively and secretly since the weekend. Even to the point of eating chocolate in the toilets at a building I had to go to for a meeting yesterday. I stopped off at Sainsburys on the way to work this morning and bought loads of bakery products and chocolate which I'd eaten by about 11.00 and I've been so stuffed ever since I've been sitting at my desk unable to move.

This is just crazy! I haven't checked on the scales, but I'm sure I've put on several pounds now, in fact, bound to be everything I've lost through careful 5:2-ing since the start of January.

Any ideas how to get back onto it? I suppose a good first step is that I've logged on here - I've been hiding from this board since the weekend!

Hope all the poorly people and DCs are making progress.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2014 14:08

tigger - can you take bottled water and maybe cola if you need caffeine?
You can drink plenty in the morning (breakfast, train, morning break) and at lunchtime. Maybe try to make your own dinner ahead of time so you don't have to wait to long to eat when you get home.

tiggermummy70 · 13/02/2014 14:10

Hi Doris,

You are at the first step, I would be tempted to sat try and have a fast day to reset, but if your craving food that might not help.
do you log your food on MFP?
I would try logging food for a week and just try and keep it within your TDEE as a place to start, perhaps if you can do that to calm and reclaim your balance then you can look at reducing calories for one day a week, not talking a full fast tdee -20-25%. If that goes OK, pick another day and do the same, repeat following week and then gradually lower the cals a little more, if you feel your going off rails go back to point were it was working and stay there for a bit longer.
Do you know why you are craving???

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2014 14:14

Doris - yes, you've made the first step back - you're no longer bingeing in secret. The second step is to decide what you want to do tomorrow (or the rest of today) and then do it. Don't weigh until your body has cleared what you've just eaten.

Did anything happen (or not happen) to set this off?

tiggermummy70 · 13/02/2014 14:14

Hi Errol,

Yes I can drink water on breaks I do about 4 pints/day at the Mo..
I only drink diet coke as normal is too sweet.
I defiantly will need to eat something during the day otherwise by the time I get to the school I will want to eat the children!!!!

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2014 14:21

yes, I meant diet coke.

Most people seem to start off by wanting something at lunch. When I started 5:2 it was an apple and a cup of milky tea. (I just have some miso now, and water or herbal teas). maybe you could take a box with some sort of salad and protein?

Tiredemma · 13/02/2014 14:30

This week I have found the following very useful on my 5.2 days

  • A picture of Kylie Minogue in her famous gold hot pants on my fridge door. It has really staved off my cravings.
Dotty342kids · 13/02/2014 14:56

Doris, first of all DO NOT PANIC or feel guilty. Both of these are destructive emotions which, in my view, will lead to further overeating.
As a classic emotional / secret chocolate eater, I completely understand where you're at and I know that it's not a nice place.
This month, on my 1yr 5:2 anniversary, I have found myself increasingly bingeing (in secret like you) and it's the most horrible feeling.
What I am trying very hard to do, is to focus on how great 5:2 makes me feel (and it really does Smile ), to remember how good it's felt every time the scales drop or I put on some clothing which looks really nice on me. And to avoid temptation. That means not finding reasons to go to the shops, not having treats in the house for the kids that you'll end up eating, and finding good distraction techniques - walks / baths.
You can get through this, I know you can Smile
And yes, get back on here, it really helps me!

almostthereagain holiday sounds amazing. Ooh, I'm so Envy

Dotty342kids · 13/02/2014 14:58

Oh, and Doris it's only been three days, you won't have put on that much weight. Stay away from scales until next week though, to be on the safe side!
Can you get a fast day in between now and then so you can put yourself back on track?

womblesofwestminster · 13/02/2014 15:27

ErrolTheDragon I might sound like a knob asking this but, how do you do circuits at home?

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2014 16:02

It's just what they call each set of 3mins strength (which is 2x(30 sec something like pushups, 1 minute something like squat and press), 2mins cardio ( 2x30sec of a couple of different things eg plank jacks or shadow boxing with weights) , 1 min abs on the dvd. Not exactly the same as what is meant in 'circuit training', each of the 'circuits' is different exercises. Smile

Miffytastic · 13/02/2014 16:21

Thanksfor the welcome (back) :D

FD going OK so far -have had lots of tea, a nonstick pan fried egg on a crumpet and a bag of 60cal tesco popcorn, oh and about5 brazil nuts. A bit random... and haven't counted up the calories yet but I'm doing OK for 4.20pm!

Eatriskier · 13/02/2014 16:46

Have lost the thread so name checking isn't going to happen, but some great SVs and NSVs on here.

Welcome back miffy

Don't dispair Doris - even some of the old time hardcore have had major blow out periods, sometimes I think your body just like to react.

Feeling better and better all the time here. Still no fasting as until I'm off the antibiotics, although I'm still very queasy so am quite under sedentary TDEE often. However I am beginning to contemplate drinking something other than very weak cordial or tea, had a brief fling with a certain Mr P. Pig and have posh sausage and mustard mash planned for tonight (DH gave blood so isn't fasting today either). Also finally had my thyroid test back and its 'satisfactory' so god knows what my body is doing. That said, the funny symptoms I was having that looked like hyperthyroid seem to have disappeared as the penicillin kicked in so maybe I've just been fighting something low level for months.

Good luck all fasters

Eatriskier · 13/02/2014 16:47

Oh, I've also invested in a pair of decent wellies so the storms will come to an end soon. I'm sorry to not have provided you all with this service sooner Grin

Dotty342kids · 13/02/2014 16:58

Miffy interesting choice of foods there. What's for dinner? Smile
DH just phoned to say that he won't be back till really, really late. Wondering if I can distract myself with a bath once I've fed the kids so that we can still eat together later.....

eatriskier well it's about time. I look forward to the drought that is surely on its way Grin

almostthereagain · 13/02/2014 17:31

Mine too dotty but I had no such angelic wifely thoughts. Supper already scoffed with ds!
doris I feel so bad for you, you sound Sad about it. People do far worse things in public than eat too much chocolate in private. Perhaps if you can work out what triggered it you can work from there? Is it the complete denial of choc, could small amounts of G&B or was it comfort/drop in blood sugar? Keep checking in xx
Glad to hear you're on the mend eatSmile

Dotty342kids · 13/02/2014 18:21

it's ok, he's now on his way so I won't be forced to eat a small child Grin

Doris was having another think about you, is period due? I know I get ridiculous cravings to eat, eat, eat in the run up to mine............

DorisAllTheDay · 13/02/2014 18:26

Thanks, all. I really don't know what triggered this latest. I had a year and a bit of successful weight loss from August 2012 and lost six stone by October 2013. Since then it's been up and down dramatically. I had huge binges in October and December, which was what brought me to 5:2 at the start of January - I thought I needed to try something different. And it seemed to be working but then I had two consecutive weeks of gaining weight, and something seemed to snap and I haven't been able to stop myself eating.

Errol, I was about to reply that nothing had triggered it as far as I was aware - but thinking about it, I'm wondering if I'm simply very tired. It's been a hugely busy couple of weeks at work and I'm exhausted. Could it just be that? Anyway, an early night tonight.

Tigger, yes I usually log everything on MFP but I haven't done it these past few days. That's a good idea to try to get back to TDEE tomorrow - think I'll have a go at that since it seems more achievable than trying to do an FD.

Eatriskier, I'm glad to hear you're feeling better - you were in a very bad way when I last heard from you. And thanks for telling me that even the hard core have blow-outs. That's reassuring! And thank you for buying wellies. I can see the moon peeping out from behind the clouds already.
