The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and were a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
Other Threads
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Tips and Links: Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
Inspirational: eatriskiers thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.
Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Enjoy your early night Doris. I've started to enjoy going to bed earlier since I've started 5:2. I love sipping on a calming herbal tea ( I like verbena ) and reading a good book.Wink
Ps. Don't think that the early nights have helped me grow. Though where I live the old people say that sleep makes you grow. Personally I think it's more about memory loss where I'm concerned Smile.

Grin LilyJo 5:2 must be working well for you if you've gained three inches in height! Wish I could do that. Maybe I could borrow your DH's special tape measure?

Errol I really like Mountain Warehouse. I buy a lot of their stuff online then pick it up from my local shop - that way you get much more choice than simply what they have in stock, but without the inconvenience of having to make arrangements to be in or collect stuff. I hope your DD enjoys the ski trip.

I've had a much better day today. I'm about 100 calories under TDEE, so all I have to do now is get through the rest of the day without eating anything else. An early night for me, I think. Rock 'n' roll.

Zed , I hope you've had a better day with your DCs.

Hope everyone in the UK is surviving this truly horrible weather. I'm still in my office because it was raining so hard an hour ago I didn't want to set foot out of doors. It's eased off now so I'm going to make a dash for it.

Fats are essential for the diet.
Excessively low fat diets have been strongly linked to depression.
Sugar is NOT NEEDED in the diet.
Nor are sweeteners.

The sooner overly processed foods are taxed along with anything that has extrinsic sugar, the better

Hey- well done for the healthy BMI Errol even if you've been down there before this week.Smile

Until last week I thought I was 5'2" but I got DH to mesure me and found out I am 5'5" !

Was it you, Errol, that posted some stuff about wrist measurement, height measurement and so on ? The idea was to find out what we should really be aiming for because we're all built differently.

If it was could you post it again? It wasn't on thread 38 and I don't know where it is.

postmanpat well done for binning the crap nutrition advice. We got one of those leaflets too; needless to say it got binned immediately. Unfortunately not every parent has enough information at their disposal to question the advice they're given. Such a shame.

Bigchoc. The sugary low fat crap peddled to children is appalling.

We don't do any of that in this house! Wink

Thankfully the DCs school is independent and they don't serve low fat fare as such. However they do serve the DC pudding after lunch.
I've sat in on a couple of lunches (part of the PTA "monitoring" the quality of lunches).
And it was nice food. It's wasn't crap and the puddings were absolutely tiny and came with fruit which most of the children ate.

But take a trip to Tesco and behold the sugary junk. You can develop type 2 diabetes from just reading the labels. Wink

I enjoying cooking and I do also enjoy baking. I am developing ways of avoid overly sugary baked goods. I mostly replace the sugar with agave nectar. It's not entirely 100% good but better. It's also less sweet to taste so you develop a less sweet palate.

Well it's raining so hard here I'm considering building an arc before we all drown Wink

Miffy - YY to chickpeas, I'm not a veggie but love them - hummus made without much oil, but lots of lemon and garlic is good with veg sticks; the Laska curry downthread sounds great.

Postman I was discussing with maybe Tip,Bssh, Betsy the latest school guidelines, which most lunch-box police will be using.

Thank you for filing those guidelines where they belong !

No one wants DCs to lunch on Red Bull, crisps and choc (ban all those if you want) but the recommendations are LOW-FAT for all cheese, spreads, meat, yoghurt. That is old discredited fat-phobia, not science.

Most growing kids will do fine with a BLT or ploughman's sandwich, but they are already being banned at some schools.

Definitely need to get some soups and innocent veg pots in for next week! Can't think what else is low cal veggie protein and tasty... chick peas maybe? Will check out the recipe thread again

I was going to suggest a thermos to you too Tiger

How nice to be back amongst a nice supportive lot of people. I don't think I could have done it last time without the support from here. BsshBossh - I remember you from before, glad to hear you'd doing good on maintaining. I really want to get downa nd STAY down this time... sigh...

Nice to hear that those of you with the lurgy are gradually on the mend. Shame about the kids though! I've had to work hard at keeping calm with 30 over-excited, energetic 5 year olds today. We are fed up with wet playtimes!

I fasted Mon (500) and Weds (zero) this week and it has suddenly made such a difference. My intake had been going up and up until I went a kilo over my maintenance range so I got back on the wagon this week. My appetite seems completely reset and I have barely eaten all day (tbh there's nothing like a wet playtime for keeping me well out of reach of the biscuit tin in the staffroom). Off to the gym soon when I've marked whatever I can't bear to take home.

FYI, can't remember who asked about teachers promoting the govt version of healthy eating (maybe bigchoc?) I am pleased to report that I flicked through the latest eat right propaganda to land on my desk and chucked them in the bin instead of handing them out. Don't snitch on me, please!

Doris - well done for discovering that you were either tired or premenstrual. At least now you've seen it. Now, it's just to remember that in future.

The number of times I've headed into crisis because I've not taken into account that I just need to stop when I'm tired.

Hello and Happy Valentine's Day
I've had a really busy week again and have enjoyed catching up on the thread before we move on to 39.

Almosthere I hope you have a great holiday. When are you going ?

Well done Tigger on the slinky bum and to Mrs F on cheering yourself up with your pre-kid clothes ( that's a great idea me-thinks ).

For FDs Tigger, I take a bag (looks like a lunch bag so my work colleages don't hassle me with questions about not eating at lunch time). In it I put 2 cup- flask things with tea in and a selection of herbal tea bags that I like . I drink loads if warm drinks and Bob's your Uncle !

almost I bet you're taller than me though!

Whew, well just about to get some work done, good thing I'm PT. This morning after shredding etc we removed the large piece of conifer which was adorning our fence - luckily the biggest bit fell straight onto a fence post and also caught in a tree so not much damage. Quite fun chopping it up with the loppers small enough to get it in the car to the dump - glad we got it done, the weather is turning foul again.

Then into town - DD is off on school ski trip tomorrow, and we discovered last night that her beanie and neck warmer thingy had vanished without trace. Fortunately Mountain warehouse had the identical items as she chose two years ago at knock-down prices. I'm sure the originals will turn up!

So now something of a holiday for me too for the next week - I might have a FD on Monday, not sure; might try one of the other JM exercise dvds I've got - depends what else we decide to do. Smile
