Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and were a friendly bunch.

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Tips and Links: Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Arghh hunger pangs starting!

Why is it that my Wed FD is so much harder than my Mon FD? Maybe because there's only one day in between... I know it's all in my head, but soon into the morning I start telling myself I can't possibility do it today, despite the fact that I've successfully completed all my other Wed FDs. I know once I get into the afternoon it'll be easier, but urghhhhhhhhhhhh!

It might have to be a bit of a grazing day.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/02/2014 11:32

DontBeBlue - you've done it before, you can do it again today. Have a drink and tell your head to STFU Grin

postmanpatscat · 12/02/2014 12:18

Come on blue you can do this. I'm here with you! I'm doing liquids only until at least after school (even though there's a Twix caramel slice lurking in my desk drawer).

HandMini · 12/02/2014 13:15

Blue - I'm doing a fast day today as well. Keep going, let's check in here later and see how we're doing. I do Mons and Weds as well. I ususally find Weds easier to be honest. It's Monday after my heavy-eating weekend that I find the hardest.

somewherebecomingrain · 12/02/2014 13:27

ITF (intention to fast) abort abort. Won't lower the tone with a blow by blow account. Will just say that I regret it! I'll be back.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2014 13:49

Why I keep consisting folk start with an estimate, but then must adjust for their particular bod:

On 2000 cals I would be starving. My TDEE is 2400, which seems to work.

Tip, Errol are also middle-aged female shorties with sedentary jobs but have around TDEE 1500 (and in fact I think I'm several years older and sit 10-12 hrs in front of screen)

TalkinPeace · 12/02/2014 13:55

Another non faster here.
I did not get to bed till 1:30 am yesterday
its cold, wet, windy and miserable out there

so I swam, did yoga, did bodypump and then had two scrambled eggs on two slices of garlic sausage and a handful of nuts then a satsuma for lunch
and will probably have supper tonight if DH makes it past the hole in the A2

if I go a bit over target weight, stuff it. I'll fast properly when the weather improves

BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2014 13:57

Those who swear 5:2 doesn't work, even though they count FDs and NFDs via mfp, may have a real TDEE much lower than the calculated

... unless they forget / under-estimate quantities of food or over-estimate exercise time / intensity

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 12/02/2014 14:00

I'll fast properly when the weather improves
whenever that may be.... we're due for a heck of a blow later on today in my area. NFD for me anyway, just about to get lunch. DH bought far too much piri-piri chicken and then went off it so it'll be some of that in a wrap with salad I think.

TalkinPeace · 12/02/2014 14:02

re TDEE
I am 5'5" nearly 49 and weigh exactly 9 stone so any of you can work out my TDEE
when I'm working I sit all day, either in the car or at a computer
on a non work day I go to the gym for the morning so my TDEE increases
BUT
I'm a very narrow build - I do not carry extra weight at all well so would ideally like to get a bit lower weight - but not till the weather improves Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2014 14:05

I take a week off training every 2-3 months, as recommended for intense exercisers, any WOE.
This time I decided to pause 5:2 as well, so its 10 days since my last FD, hardly any training. I even enjoyed some healthy Frenzies.

The sky hasn't fallen in. My bod had a completely stress-free timeout, so I feel refreshed. I've probably put on a few lb, but I'll resume FDs on Friday - back to normal in a few days.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2014 14:08

Tip You are 2" taller and 9 yrs younger than I am. We're both very active and you eat a damn sight healthier.

OP posts:
Tiredemma · 12/02/2014 14:19

2lb off this week Grin

thats 8lb since jan 6th

TalkinPeace · 12/02/2014 14:27

Bigchoc
You make eat Choklit, but I over indulge in Wine Wink
Your liver is probably in far better shape than mine!

Tiredemma
Well done.

MazzleDazzle · 12/02/2014 14:27

Yes, Somewhere, as in...I had ITF, but it just didn't happen. Never mind. No such thing as a failed FD as you can just give it a bash another day!

vvv, if you can, start every day with a hot drink, LOTS of water and put off eating until later. I try not to eat until 12pm on NFD. Has really helped my calorie intake.

At my workout class this morning, talk turned to food and how to eat 'healthily'. We were advised to eat every 2 hours throughout the day, eat 'diet' yogurts, dried fruit and to choose Haribo over chocolate Confused. In fact, a little treat does us good as we 'need' sugar!

Bigchoc I used to think that having 10 days off was a terrible idea and would be near impossible to get back on it, but witn this WOL a couple of FD and the extra few pounds are gone! Interested to know how your body responds when you start exercising again?

MazzleDazzle · 12/02/2014 14:28

Well done, Tiredemma, a cracking SV!

HandMini · 12/02/2014 14:58

Wooooh, well done TiredEmma. That's brilliant. Do you have a target amount to lose?

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 12/02/2014 15:15

Thanks, Errol, PostmansPC, Handmini, it's still going!

I had my crudites and satsumas, just need to get through this afternoon, won't be thinking about food during my Chinese class, then I'll be home before I know it.

Handmini, how about you?

HandMini · 12/02/2014 15:30

Not so bad. Only tea and soup so far, then I think it'll be soup again for supper because that's all we've got at home.

Would kill for a big milky coffee with sugar.....going to be first on the list tomorrow.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/02/2014 15:43

I took the Christmas hols off, and I think will take next week off too as it's half term. DD will be away on school skiing holiday; I had 4 days annual leave carried over which I have to use before april or lose so DH and I have a series of theatre visits planned, and we'll have at least one good meal out - but he's on a fitness regime at the mo so we won't get too overindulgent. Weather permitting hopefully we'll do some decent walks or maybe even get the bikes out ...the forecast doesn't look too promising though.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2014 16:11

Well done, TiredEmma You are losing quickly.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2014 16:13

Mazzle Both my gyms keep insisting muscular people must eat every 2 hrs or lose muscle. Rubbish, sooooo old hat.

Megrim · 12/02/2014 16:39

DS1 is a competitive swimmer, and is advised to eat little and often to keep blood sugar levels steady when in max training (has been known to top 70km in a week). He doesn't have much fat reserves (he's running at about 12% body fat) and coupled with growing (he grew 1cm within a 4 day period last month) he does need to constantly eat. He never trains on an empty stomach and always has a milkshake or protein shake straight after training (within 15 minutes), otherwise he gets stiff and sore.

You would not believe my food bills.

Eatriskier · 12/02/2014 16:43

Finally got out of my pj's at around 11:30... And got back I them about 15:30. Managed to get absolutely drenched in the middle.

Breadandwine · 12/02/2014 16:45

The weather is settling down now, here in the South West, with some sunshine - but it's been blowing a gale all morning. So hard that it's brought down a large branch - a good half - of our lovely Morello cherry tree, which stands at the foot of our back garden! Sad

And I've had to cancel two three sessions today - I postponed this morning's after seeing the weather forecast last night.

I cancelled this afternoon's session because my back has tweaked again and all the progress I'd made with it over the last 24 hours has disappeared!

And I've just postponed tonight's session - the roads are too dodgy to ask students to come out. We can always do it next week.

But all these are just minor irritations. Others, both on this thread and in the wider world, are much worse off than we are.
