Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

MrsF my BMI twin... woohoooo Grin.

PassAFist · 11/02/2014 15:28

Hello everyone!
I am new, I hope it's OK to jump right in. I just started last week and had two fasting days which seemed manageable. Which is not to say I wasn't quite happy to get to a non-fasting day! I lost about 2 pounds.

However (and here is where my question starts), last night I was diagnosed with shingles. The lesions are across the top of my forehead and my head and it hurts like fuck to be honest! I was given antivirals and told to take pain meds - the pain meds are not touching it!

Today was supposed to be a fast day but I am not fasting because I thought that probably wasn't a good idea right now.

The doctor said the lesions should clear up in a week or so but the pain could last for a few weeks/months. So that's something to look forward to!

My question is - when would be a good time to get back on track?

Thanks for any suggestions!

TalkinPeace · 11/02/2014 15:30

Rant alert

Just been at the supermarket ....

"Low Fat fruit yoghurt"
Yup, fat = 2%
but sugar = 14%

FFS that means two pots of it contains a heaped spoonful of sugar.
And people eat "low fat yoghurt" as part of a "calorie controlled diet"

"Zero fat yoghurt"
10% sugar and all sorts of surreal stabilisers of dubious origin

Dotty342kids · 11/02/2014 15:35

Ah, how I've missed the TIP rants Smile. You make a very good point though. I'd far rather have a nice creamy, full fat yoghurt any day!

I've just mfp'd tonight's planned dinner and it's only around 400 cals and I'll be going to an exercise class just after it so reckon I'll be burning it straight back off anyway Grin so am feeling very virtuous.
Then just have the challenge of avoiding the kitchen when I get back. Might have a nice bubble bath!

ErrolTheDragon · 11/02/2014 15:45

PassA - if you look downthread lots of advice for poorly people - don't fast, eat well (ie good wholesome food in appropriate amounts). I'd say, until you feel well enough to do otherwise.

LadyB - are you doing any exercise in conjunction with the 5:2? - I reckon the combination is what works wonders on the jeans fit/tummy wobble front.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/02/2014 15:48

TiP - yes... I do sometimes like a muller corner but I consider it as akin to confectionary/biscuits. Unlike my brekkie natural set onken, fruit and nuts.

vieenrose · 11/02/2014 16:02

joby I feel for you, I'm so sorry to hear your news.

Mrs F Bravo!!! Proof for all newcomers that this woe really really works

I've been off these threads for a while now but a lot has been happening in my life. We will be moving to Hong Kong next summer (we live in France). But I'm sure I'll be able to keep up the good work there: 18 kg off in a year, BMI 20.8

ladybranston · 11/02/2014 16:10

Errol...there's the rub. right now I am still rehabbing my ACL - had it replaced on 1st November after a nasty tear this summer. I am still not cleared for any vigorous activity apart from my thrice-weekly physio sessions. Which are very medical rather than sweaty, IYSWIM.

The whole experience has been incredibly difficult - before the injury I was a 2xweek spinner and very serious weightlifting 3x week. The week before I tore the ACL I was squatting 85kg 5x5. Going from that to literally nothing - just gentle walking and physio has been torturous.

I am hoping to get cleared for Spin next month..but my physio seems to think April/May is more likely for a full clearance back to sports/lifting.

Sad
ErrolTheDragon · 11/02/2014 16:16

Oh, that's rough LadyB - I have to confess I don't know what an ACL is but going from that sort of exercise to nearly nowt must be very frustrating. Wonder if that change could affect your TDEE (other than of course adjusting the activity level) ?

Dotty342kids · 11/02/2014 16:32

Nice to hear from you vieenrose, gosh, you get about a bit Smile. Fab loss and BMI btw!

ladybranston · 11/02/2014 17:48

Errol...probably.

The stress of the injury then the recovery probably hasn't helped. As we all know, cortisol is a key factor when it comes to weight gain, especially around the middle (my personal issue). I think also the fact it's been a terribly cold winter here in NYC, much colder than usual hasn't helped. I was never a serious carblover until the injury and this winter has been tough.

here's a good explanation of what an torn ACL means. It's a common football/tennis/skiing injury, actually.

But then, maybe these are all excuses? i just need to buckle down and really focus on lowering the carbs and doing any possible exercise...like walking more, even if its at a slow pace.

MrsFlorrick · 11/02/2014 17:51

Pass. ShockShock Omg. That's awful.

(Holds hand).
Do you think Manuka honey will work on that? Wink Worth a go if sticky.

MrsFlorrick · 11/02/2014 17:57

Bssh. Sqeeeeee. BMI twins again. Grin

FILs cancer was staged this morning as a 1. Phew. MIL in particular was delighted. FILs only comment was "well at the end of the day I've still got cancer". And I suppose he is correct if a little down beat.

He needs an OP which will result in a colostomy which may be reversible. No guarantees. But no chemo or radiotherapy. Double phew. At 82 this is good as I think chemo would finish him off really.

DH is going up to see them. I was supposed to go last weekend but given our infectious scarlet fever status, he had to ditch it.

My face is really peeling (after effect of scarlet fever). But it's not scabby, red or scarred in anyway so I am very happy. And my new panacea is Manuka honey. And you'll all soon be sick of hearing about it Wink

MazzleDazzle · 11/02/2014 18:10

Well hello again! (Waves hand furiously)

Gosh it's been a long time, but we are all fighting fit! Last week I only managed 6:1, but I'm ashamed to say that I was so ill I reached for the comfort food on NFD. Half a packet of Digestives one day, a pack of Rich Teas with butter the next...and as for my heathy green soup? It looked and tasted like swamp. Ate a whole Tiger bread with butter instead. Blush

Was exhausted for days and couldn't face fasting at all, even when I perked up a bit. Was away for the night with DH yest. staying at a swish hotel. Managed a 24 hr LOF before we checked in, so enjoyed a couple of glasses of Prosecco, smoked duck salad, half a bottle of Rioja, roast halibut, followed by tiramisu, washed down with an ameretto, guilt free! And this morning I had eggs Benedict Smile.

Haven't had anything to eat since and not planning to until tomorrow, so another FD under my belt. This will surely make up for last week's appalling eating!

Welcome Pass. Just trust your instincts. If you feel crap, feed your body nourishing food and not biscuits, like I did and put off fasting until you're fighting fit.

Zed, puking on a hand knitted blanket is simply too much to bear! You have my sympathy.

And last of all, well done Mrs F. You are my inspiration! I am currently the weight you were this time last year. I hope this time next year I'm where you are now!

ErrolTheDragon · 11/02/2014 18:24

LadyB - urgh, nasty. Isn't there any upper body/abs exercise you could still do without involving the knee at all? Something like seated boxing with weights?

MazzleDazzle · 11/02/2014 18:37

Yes, TiP I too get enraged by so called 'healthy' food that are in fact full of sugar! Especially when they're marketed at kids Angry or their parents who are too easily fooled!

BetsyBell · 11/02/2014 18:54

Talking of enraged, I've just had a massive rant about a Change 4 Life leaflet that came home from school today:

Change your fizzy pop to sugar free pop!
For 5yo and up drink 1% or skimmed milk instead of full fat or semi!
Eat reduced fat cheese instead of normal cheese!
Eat shite margarine instead of butter!

No mention of trans fats...

It does at least say you should eat more veg though.

BetsyBell · 11/02/2014 18:57

That was the advice btw, not my rant! My rant was along the lines of

FAT IN MILK AND CHEESE IS NOT UNHEALTHY FOR GROWING KIDS and DON'T DRINK CHEMICAL SHITE INSTEAD OF SUGARY SHITE

Sorry for the swears kids, they were necessary Grin

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/02/2014 19:01

Hi all - sorry to have dropped off the thread. I'm suffering with the lurgies AGAIN so no FD so far this week. Today I fell into a hole lined with carbs of all kinds. Ho hum.

MrsF YAY on goal, and that is the best possible news in the circs. about FIL. :)

Yes I also get ragey about low-fat AKA sugar and sweetener filled foods. Angry

Dogmatix34 · 11/02/2014 19:02

Thought exactly the same as you about that leaflet Betsy. I was amazed at the advice given

Megrim · 11/02/2014 19:32

We had a student biochemist lodging with us in the early 1980s, she advised us not to eat margarine as it was much more unhealthy than butter. My dad, who had high cholesterol, went back to butter only and his cholesterol improved massively.

Southeastdweller · 11/02/2014 19:43

Good grief Betsy, I remember as a child of the 80's being told by the media and the NHS that margarine was good for you and fat from dairy was to limited and I'm amazed it's still going on Angry.

Pass Poor you. Normal advice is not to fast unless you feel ok. Intermittent fasting is a good stress for a healthy body, but if your poor bod is trying to cope even with a bad cold, let alone shingles, it already is too stressed.

So:

  • Try to eat mindfully, about TDEE
  • Avoid junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol
  • Eat nutrient-rich foods
  • Take some walks outside

Hope you soon recover and can join us on FDs again
Smile
