Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 38 -"Oh that this too, too solid flesh would melt" : Well, Hamlet, it can in a healthy, sustainable way. Join our friendly 5:2/IF support group"

The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and were a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
Other Threads
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Tips and Links: Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
Inspirational: eatriskiers thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.
Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

I don't eat venison but that does sound nice Betsy, as does your breakfast Smile

BetsyBell · 11/02/2014 09:14

Both were lovely dotty - the meatball dish could be any sort of meatballs or quorn type veggie stuff. The Sainsburys venison ones were lovely though, and it is a lean meat of course so a good fast day treat! Any non fasters can have the same dish but with pasta. Recipe here

zedzedzed · 11/02/2014 09:31

FUUUUUUUUCK!

joby that's terrible, what a total shocker, you must be devastated, or you're still in shock I guess. God, 12yrs and then poof. I'm so sorry. You're amazing for even thinking about healthy food choices just now, but I guess being good to yourself and feeling successful will be really important now. You already know to lay off the booze; depressants are not what you need right now...maybe go punish some gym equipment if you're that way inclined? I'd be under a duvet with a brie wheel and a spoon, so you're already a superhero.

Sadly there is more vom here now, it's not a vom bug, it's just her hacking cough, when she catches a bad hack she just can't stop it; poor wee thing, the look of shock on her face. This one was after I'd changed and clothed everyone and just strapped her in the buggy for The Boy's nursery run, and just wrapped a hand-knitted wool blanket round her. Fabulocity.

Chocupid · 11/02/2014 10:14

Ooh Joby poor you... my SIL is going through the same thing and says its like losing your right arm,
fortunately for her she's also lost her appetite!

Make sure your kind to yourself
Hope your getting support and not sat on your own. Hugs

Jobyloo · 11/02/2014 10:24

zed the poor little mite and you... flipping eck it's knackering caring for little ones when they're well but when you're under the weather too OMG.

I'm surprisingly calm an philosophical about it all today, not saying I won't be a screaming banshee by 5pm though. Actually feel like a bit of the old Joby has resurfaced. I think it's because we've sorted out a date when she will go, can't cope with the will she or won't she stay. It's not fair on any of us DS included. I'm still hoping that she will say that it's been a terrible mistake and stay but for the first time in a couple of weeks I've actually thought it will be bloody hard but if need be I can get through this.

Think I will hit the gym cos I'm certainly not going running in this flipping rain!!! I cannot begin to imagine what peeps are going through with all these floods...

Keep strong fasters and those on NFD enjoy every morsel!

Jobyloo · 11/02/2014 10:27

Thanks choc have got a fabulous group of friends who are letting me lick my wounds at the mo and are always at the end of a text or phone. Know that when DP leaves they will swoop in like soldiers...one man down and all that!

ErrolTheDragon · 11/02/2014 10:30

zed - OMG I remember the cough/vom cycle .... 'this too will pass'. It's horrible while they're going through it though. Keep her environment moist, and (sorry, lost track of her age) if there's something soothing she can suck that can help.

Joby - huge NSV for you deciding to get back in control. Flowers

MrsFlorrick · 11/02/2014 10:31

You too Zed - good luck with your day, I hope you manage a bit of rest.

GooooooO MrsF!!!!! That is wonderful and fabulous news - SO happy for you.

bibliomania · 11/02/2014 10:46

Sorry to Jooby and the sickies.

Three cheers for MrsFlorrick!

Got up earlier than usual to do 30-day shred. Abandoned it last Oct in favour of C25K, but I'm struggling with the C25K 25-min runs, so I need to do something else as well. Can't do C25K as regularly as I need to for childcare reasons, so turning to JM to pick up the slack. Quite literally, ha.

BetsyBell · 11/02/2014 10:59

We'll be needing a new thread soon and it's my turn to put one up - I'm lacking inspiration for titles so if anyone's got any ideas they're desperate to see up in number 39's title please message me! Grin

zedzedzed · 11/02/2014 11:07

POM POM WAVEY WAVEY POM POM!!!!!!!!
Mrs F that's amazing! You and Bsssh should have a pom-pom party together! well done indeed.

Joby I have Jimmy Cliff lyrics in my head for you for some reason:

"I've got a hard road to travel and a rough rough way to go
Said it's a hard road to travel and a rough rough way to go
But I can't turn back, my heart is fixed
My mind's made up, I'll never stop
My faith will see, see me through

Let me tell you
I'm all alone, this lonesome road I roam
I've got no love to call my very own
Oh the river gets deeper, the hills get steeper
And the pain gets deeper every day, yeah

I've got a hard road to travel and a rough rough way to go
Said it's a hard road to travel and a rough rough way to go
But I can't turn back, my heart is fixed
My mind's made up, I'll never stop
My faith will see, see me through

Aah, oh oh
Aah, oh oh - one more thing

I dream of a home far beyond the sea
Where there is love and peace and joy for me
Oh, in my eyes I see troubles and dangers for me
But destiny where it leads me I must go, hey

I've got a hard road to travel and a rough rough way to go
Said it's a hard road to travel and a rough rough way to go
But I can't turn back, my heart is fixed
My mind's made up, I'll never stop
My faith will see, see me through

Aah, oh oh - no, help me somebody
Aah, oh oh - somebody please, help me right now"

MrsFlorrick · 11/02/2014 11:08

Zedzed. I looooove Jimmy Cliff!!!! Harder the come is one of my all time fave albums. GrinGrin

zedzedzed · 11/02/2014 11:16

Me too! 'You can get it if you Really Want' is THE feel good, motivational song of all time...and Vietnam is so melancholy.

Baby's passed out, at last, and I've just inhaled a Terry's chocolate orange bar...hmmm...very strange....I don't care about chocolate usually, not had a Terry's since Christmas 1991! My poisons are mainly of the cheese and carb variety...with some baking once a month...I wonder why the sudden urge for crap chocolate? Oh well. It's logged and I'll have a smaller lunch to balance it out. Odd though.

Jobyloo · 11/02/2014 11:39

Whoooooohoooooo Mrs F that's fantastic news, well done you and proving that this WOL/WOE works!!!

Thanks for all the support guys, it's much appreciated! zed love Jimmy Cliff too Thanks

somewherebecomingrain · 11/02/2014 11:39

betsey thanks just what I needed to hear.

I got a top notch food processor for Xmas and it is now easy to prepare
Mounds of chopped/slices/cubed/shredded/grated veg for consumption in soups and salads.

I recommend it as an investment.

I love jimmy cliff too x

Dotty342kids · 11/02/2014 11:49

woop MrsFlorrick that is brilliant news, well done Grin

almostthereagain · 11/02/2014 12:39

Wey hey mrs f Grin Grin Great feeling, well done youThanks

TalkinPeace · 11/02/2014 13:11

Joby you will discover that these threads beat the relationships board into a cocked hat for real, positive, non judgemental support
rant and rave at us rather than people you have to face every day
and YY to "stuff fasting" but also YYY to eating mindfully as the mindfulness will get you through the coming months in many other ways.

Tiredemma · 11/02/2014 13:51

Ok- going well so far.

Only had a Ainsley Harriet Thai cupa soup.

And lots of water.

bishboschone · 11/02/2014 14:03

Well done mrs florrick , how many dress sizes is that ?

zedzedzed · 11/02/2014 14:10

Go on Emma power through!

I'm RAVENOUS today, what's going on? Is the snot is demanding to be fed? After the impromptu retro chocolate bar that accidentally got into my mouth, I've had a deliberate gouda and proper coleslaw sandwich; it was scrummy... but I could eat another THREE of them.

Oh dear, it's a long, empty time till dinner, I so hope this ravenous phase passes quickly as I'm back in poorly jimjams, it's chucking it down outside, the babies are still poorly and I have a crap boxset calling me; this is a recipe for indulgence. NOOOOOOO!

Have a cuppa, wait 20mins and see if it's real and not just cold-comfort.

Right. Kettle on. Or go paint some more furniture. Or hoover something.

Or just curl up with blanket on head praying for rescue.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/02/2014 14:29

zed - probably reaction to yesterday's woes. You probably need to regather yourself a bit.

biblio - some of us are also on the Feb Shred Thread - if you want company on that. It is good for fitting into life with no wasted time - and also avoids having to go out into the nasty weather. (though having said that, the sun has come out here)

ladybranston · 11/02/2014 14:40

hello gang! hoping all the invalids have a speedy recovery :) sorry not to namecheck but at work and don't have a lot of time...

successful FD yesterday, (I think that makes it no.6) In fact the easiest one yet...not really sure why. Ate a mound of tuna pasta on Sunday evening - maybe the protein/carb loading helped me through the next FD?

Ate nothing except a couple of milky coffees and my FD supper was 4oz cod poached in tomato sauce with okra and aubergine. Stuffed - in fact couldn't even finish the vegetables and will have them as a "soup" tomorrow for lunch.

Still, am not feeling any slimmer/jeans still tight/belly still wobbly. My scales are broken so don't really know what to do. Should I move to AD fasting? Maybe my TDEE is incorrect? Help!
