The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Tips and Links: Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Peplum
I effectively do 16:8 and 5:2 because I only eat breakfast in the week and do not have supper on a Sunday

postmanpatscat · 10/02/2014 22:00

FD over, easily under 500. Couldn't face the gym though, I practically snoozed through post-school meeting and then couldn't stop shivering so I figured my body had different plans for me today.

Well done biblio and tigger and welcome jemima

Creme egg? and there's not many types of chocolate I won't eat

Peplum41 · 10/02/2014 22:07

Yo postmanpcwhat did you have to keep you sub 500? Is this you done for a fortnight?

I think you will find that creme eggs actually rule!

ShyGirlie · 10/02/2014 22:16

very silly question, sorry.

Been here since new year, but i dont understand why ppl say...

  • stand up more
  • clench

please enlighten me!!Smile

TalkinPeace · 10/02/2014 22:19

standing up burns many times the calories that slobbing on teh sofa does : great for increasing the TDEE

Clench is all about pelvic floor .... as you get slimmer you find that you'll look even better if tomed
and everybody over 40 will benefit from better pelvic floor and lower abdominal muscles

BetsyBell · 10/02/2014 22:30

I have to hide dates from myself peplum, yum yum.

ShyGirlie · 10/02/2014 22:34

wow, thanks!!

also, another silly question - clenching. .. isnt that just squeezing the muscles that u would if u wanted to stop a pee mid flow (sorry, TMI i know, but dont know how else to describe lol). And do u hold for a long time? (dunce in the corner here!! Blush )

TalkinPeace · 10/02/2014 22:37

shygirlie
Its definitely not TMI to look after pelvic floor. As BreadandWine and the other chaps will confirm, they need to avoid later life bladder problems too.
Stopping wee is the easiest way to work out which muscles to clench, and it can be done any time ... four or five clenches four or five times a day, while sitting up tall and pulling tummy in ... every bit helps!

ShyGirlie · 10/02/2014 22:39

thanks so much! Smile

tiggermummy70 · 10/02/2014 22:50

Hi Not2obvious, I found the 5:2 woe after I had agreed to do a vlcd for research at work, its to support those with or at high risk. of bowel cancer which my mum died off a few years ago. So I am a frustrated 5:2 er I came to lurk and learn but couldn't keep my fingers off the keyboard! So I try and do my lowly calorie replacements as a 16:8 to get me in habit for when I complete the study. Hoping for a smooth switch from one to other.
The vlcd is helping me get back to where I was a year ago I lost 50lbs calorie counting. on myfitnesspal and then plateu'd for a year Angry Angry Angry Nothing I did worked to shift more weight, slowly gained back about10lbs.

postmanpatscat · 10/02/2014 22:58

peplum After Eights rule!

I had

  • no breakfast
  • 4 crackerbread and light Philly at lunchtime followed by a brisk walk to the post office and back
  • a mini pastry I stumbled across in my desk drawer after school to sustain me through dull staff training
  • tofu and stir fried veg for dinner

Tomorrow I have child protection training until 9pm after teaching until 4.30 I will DEFINITELY need chocolate (sorry TiP)

I don't know when I'll fast again...maybe Weds or Friday though, I need to rein it in a bit.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/02/2014 23:40

PostManPat I recommend Lindt 90% choc when you really need the support of a choc superfood not junk choc - and a training course after work sounds like a flaming chocolate emergency.
Shock
This 90% has so little sugar that there is no energy crash later and it is so powerfully chocolatey that 25g usually satisfies even me.

Re-starting this week, and coming to the end of my first FD. It has been remarkable simple ( unless I've completely under estimated my calories)

No breakfast except black tea. Met up with DH after he went to a doc appt. He had eggs Benedict and a cappuchino. I had black tea. I didn't give in to the urge to order one myself, but promised myself a nice healthy breakfast tomorrow.

I prepared in advance for my need to munch things after lunch (chicken noodle soup and a few crackers) by preparing a few carrots into sticks to munch on, and just count that off my allowance.

Dinner was prawns, some veg and lettuce, with some balsamic vinegar.

I haven't felt as though I was depriving myself at all, and only felt really hungry just before meals.

I think I even have enough left for one small biscuit with my tea in front of the tv later - although I'm considering whether I might get more 'munch factor' from a small portion of air-popped popcorn.

Tiredemma · 11/02/2014 07:03

Im on a FD today- really fancy having something like a Prawn Noodle soup this evening and using up the prawns left over from dinner last night.

I dont have an exotic array of condiments in my cupboard ( I do have some 'miso' soup sachets though and Veg/Chic stock) any 'creative' minds out there suggest a way of throwing stuff together to make me a nice soup? (believe it or not- ive never made a 'soup' before)

bishboschone · 11/02/2014 07:13

I make spicy broccoli and courgette soup with veg stock cube and white pepper . You just book it down and add a stock cube and pepper and whizz it with a hand held blender to the consistency you like .

Tiredemma · 11/02/2014 07:15

ohhh Ive also got some courgette and broccoli going spare- might throw that all in and have a 'super food soup'!

I think if I do a stock, thrown in everything and add pepper to taste ill be ok.

somewherebecomingrain · 11/02/2014 07:37

Hello all. Clinging on by my fingernails here after moving house and eating like a monster with no fasts. Now managing to skip breakfast but not fast. Weight creeping up slowly.

Trying to do 1000 cal fasts while bf but even that is tough.

Only NSV I can report is that I am having days when I literally can't eat anything but fresh raw fruit and veg with cheese or meat. Ie virtuous low carb instincts.

Hello all sorry not to name check I've no idea what's going on after moving house and no Internet.

betsey glad you feeling better.

mummyof2 you still lurking?

Hello lovely newbies - lots of energy on here!

BetsyBell · 11/02/2014 08:04

Happy to report that my 4lb illness increase has disappeared after one active fast day Smile

I do notice a significant difference in the scales if I exercise on a fast day morning - even just a long walk (60-90 minutes) does the trick.

BetsyBell · 11/02/2014 08:08

Hello somewhere - do what you can with mindful eating for now knowing that you can get properly back on track when circumstances are easier.

It's important to not let this WOE be an extra burden; it should fit in with your life and it's fine to drop in and out as life dictates. Thanks

zedzedzed · 11/02/2014 08:21

Cling on somewhere if you can get through this stressful time without gaining too much back and just jump right back on the fasting train when you can (though how you manage even 1000 cals when breastfeeding I don't know...I could've gnawed off my own arm when I was BF so well done for still having your limbs!)

BLEUGH.

Snot-filled aching-limbed sleepless night full of horrible tingly fever dreams. The baby's a bit better but howls when I put her down which is very unlike her as she's really independent, and it's so tiring having a 20lb baby in my aching arms all day...moan, moan, moan, self-pity-party here. No more vom though, which is an improvement on yesterday.

NFD here, am planning a Thai green chicken curry to blast through my sinuses, also using up the remains of the vom-a-like spiced soup I couldn't manage yesterday and some back-of-the-fridge-casualties (sugar snaps, mushrooms, baby corn, red pepper...poor sad, old veggies). Gooseberry fool for pud. Think I'll keep it light and toastie till then.

Good luck Tuesday FD-ers and happy munching NFD-ers. X

Jobyloo · 11/02/2014 08:30

Morning all, not been around for a couple of weeks. So trying to catch up on the last couple of days, can't do 2 weeks I'll be here all day lol!!

Well dry Jan was a real success and so was 5:2 but what I wasn't counting on was that DP announced on the last day of Jan that she wants to leave. We've been together for a long time (12 yrs) and yes we've had bad times just like everyone else but didn't really think anything apart from we were having a 'blip'. So as you can imagine it's come as a massive blow. My heads been all over the place and as for 5:2 have either had no appetite or have just eaten mindlessly (carby rubbish) but have also been drinking too much.

I've decided that the pity party needs to end and I need to get some control back. Whether she stays or goes I want to do 5:2 for me because stuffing my face & trying to drown my sorrows is not going to make me feel any better. So FD for me. Planning on LOF until dinner and then a chicken stir fry.

Off to make a pot of coffee and carry on reading what you've all been up to Smile

zed and anyone else who's been poorly hope you're all feeling better today Thanks

Dotty342kids · 11/02/2014 08:31

Right am checking in for my belated Monday fast day Smile as couldn't do it yesterday due to being in London for meetings etc. And what fun it was getting home from there via the rail network!

Anyway, here I am, facing a day of fasting with the prospect of scrambled eggs, baked beans and tomatoes for my dinner at the end of it. Weight is definitely on the upwards incline thanks to last four week's worth of out of control binging behaviours but today I'm putting my foot down and stopping it in its tracks Smile

Jobyloo · 11/02/2014 08:34

zed crossed posts! Glad no more vom! Fingers crossed the little one perks ups. Hope you've got plenty of Calpol in, give it regularly, it won't hurt but might help settle her.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 11/02/2014 08:44

Sorry I kind of disappeared from the thread for a while. Two poorly children to look after

Much needed fast day - haven't had one for about a week and feel bloated and heavy .

BetsyBell · 11/02/2014 08:50

Why do I keep saying I don't often have breakfast? I usually do after a fast day! Today a bowl of pink grapefruit, blueberries, big blob of plain yogurt, a sprinkle of muesli (with some extra nuts!) and a small drizzle of honey.

YUM.

I made an excellent fast day dinner yesterday - venison meatballs in spiced tomato sauce. I'll calorie count it and put it on the recipes thread. It was extremely satisfying.
