The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Welcome jjlou. If I were you I'd not eat back exercise calories. I'm always dubious of how they calculate exercise cals anyway as we're all different and exert at different rates. Anyway, not eating them back means you have leeway for eating a over TDEE on weekends or special occasions without guilt :)

Eatriskier · 08/02/2014 08:40

Sorry to add to the litany of illness posts! My improvement yesterday has been followed by a complete downturn. Am now sat in my local walk in centre, unable to swallow my own saliva or move my head. And that's after cocodamol. Cocodamol got me here. Sad

Fingers crossed they can give me something, even if it means I'm knocked out all weekend.

BetsyBell · 08/02/2014 08:44

bigchoc leaving laundry is not an option with 4 people in the house and my tumble dryer doesn't work very well so it's got to be a load a day if I'm not to drown in the stuff! I could get away without grocery shopping except I like as much fresh veg/salad/fruit for us all as possible - kids decimate fruit bowl daily. Last time I asked DH to fetch more fruit supplies he came home with beer and crisps and no fruit...

But I don't clean much Grin

But weekend today. I have stuff to do but it's stuff I want to do and everyone else is off to the cinema so will enjoy my time and space.

And there's a fruit loaf busy cooking in the bread machine so all is well.

LilyJoAndMe · 08/02/2014 08:52

I'm sooooo sorry for all you poorly sick people with shawls on.Hmm

And those with little ones in the same predicament.

Do keep taking care of yourselves and stay as warm as possible.
I suggest lots of warm herbal teas to flush out away the bugs.

In the meantime (((HUGS))).

DorisAllTheDay · 08/02/2014 09:10

Eatriskier, I'm so sorry to hear your latest. I do hope they're able to give you something to at least help you get through the weekend. ((( ))) to all the poorly people and dcs.

I had very bad news on the scales today. I appear to have gained five pounds since last week, which makes a total gain of seven pounds in the last two weeks. How can this be? This past week I've had two successful (sub 500 calorie) FDs, two NFDs below TDEE, two NFDs at around TDEE, and one complete blow-out which could have been as much as 2000 calories over TDEE. The blow-out was Thursday and it was high-carb, so there may be some water gain still around. But five pounds? And a total of seven in two weeks? Even allowing for fluctuations it seems excessive. Maybe I've completely knackered my already struggling metabolism with IF?

And today's my birthday so I sure as hell am not fasting! I started the day in a local cafe which does a beautiful breakfast of pancakes with bacon and stewed fruit. It was lovely.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/02/2014 09:18

Betsy Sorry, But your pathetic DH "shopping " and bringing home beer and crisps did make me literally LOL Grin.
Still, you need to train him to do laundry etc when you're ill.
Hopefully you are kicking that nasty cold out on its arse now.

Oh, my favourite recipe to exterminate colds (and your hopeless DH deserves no consideration re the garlic)
-400 ml bog-standard chicken cream soup
-20 cloves garlic roasted

Mix well and watch everyone leave you in peace too !

Ouch, Eat, that sounds horrible. Hopefully they can dose you with something that really helps.

And your poor face, MrsF. Even if there are temporary scars, there is usually effective treatment afterwards. At worst, minor plastic surgery should restore you to where you were.

Big (({hugs})) and Flowers to Eat, MrsF
You seem to have the absolute worst of all the nasty lurgies and injuries on this thread.

Late winter is the pits.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/02/2014 09:58

Doris Happy birthday ! Flowers
Enjoy yourself today.

Re your weight gain:

Ok, it could be water weight, especially if you go 2000 carby cals over TDEE once per week.
If you have dieted / binged a lot in the past, then your metabolism may have been lowered a lot. So, your real TDEE could be quite a bit less than you think. TDEE calculators use average values for the population of your weight, height, age but someone who has never dieted will have a higher TDEE than you.

Suggestion - try to be strict for the next 2 weeks:
-You really must avoid any binges (especially because if you think it a binge is an extra 2000, it could so easily be 3000)
-Do avoid fizzy drinks and added sugar, to give your body a rest.

  • Concentrate on lean protein and veg every day, adding moderate amounts of carbs on NFDs
  • Set your TDEE to that for your target weight, or 10% lower than now. Whichever gives the lower value. Do not exceed 5 x this value over the NFDs.
  • Record every mouthful on MFP, including milk and sugar in drinks
  • Try to add some exercise, e.g. Mosely's 10-min Fast Fitness blasts, or anything you fancy.

Hope your next weigh-in has better results
Smile

bigchoc I am feeling much better today I think, not exactly 100% but getting there :)

DH's shopping was pretty funny - and to be fair on him he's been suffering with the same cold. We all have except the 7yo and I really don't want to let him loose on the laundry (yet)!

The fruit bread went nuts in the breadmaker - just as I was applauding myself for not bothering with a recipe - overflowed and started burning on the element so I was rushed back out of bed to rescue it - now baking away in the oven and looking and smelling amazing. Although I've just realised I forgot to put any nutmeg in it. Ah well.

Happy birthday doris Flowers

Big hugs to those who are still suffering with nasties.

Megrim · 08/02/2014 10:22

Eat sounds like you've done the right thing, have you got a high temperature too?

Betsy I remember sending DH out for bread and milk once, he came back with a brand new racing bike. I am currently trying to wean him off the cheap shit shelf at Tesco's - just because something is 25p it doesn't mean that (a) it will be nice (b) that anyone will want to eat it. He always eats it on principle, but this is the man who once are a peanut butter, sardine and mint jelly sandwich because that was all we had in the cupboard.

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 08/02/2014 10:23

Happy birthday Doris!

And sorry to hear about your DD womble, DS is there same age and its a miracle we've not had any broken bones yet the way he hurls himself about!

I'm trying to feel a bit more optimistic today, sent off for a uni prospectus so am considering going doing a postgraduate course if I can get the funding, maybe social work or teaching?
And DP still thinks we should get married, not entirely sure how we're going to afford it (it was already a low- budget affair!) but we're just going to have to scrimp/save/find it from somewhere, that date is really important to us and I so want to be married to him.

Hope all those with varying plagues feel better soon Thanks

And on a last note, today was weigh-in day, and I've lost 14lbs! Despite the Dominos!

Megrim · 08/02/2014 10:24

Happy birthday Doris , enjoy your Cake. Hopefully the scales will move in the right direction (put them away for a while?)

Megrim · 08/02/2014 10:27

Yay Badger, all sounds very positive! Yes, deffo get married, just delay the big party until you can afford to have what you want. We got married overseas (just the two of us) and had a big party for family and friends when we got back, it was fab and completely low stress.

LilyJoAndMe · 08/02/2014 10:33

Doris - Happy Birthday to you.
Pfff for the weight stuff. A few weeks ago that happened to me too. I had started exercising and I watched the scales go up !

Big Choc explained that it is possible to retain water when we start exercising after a long time of not using our muscles.

I actually felt that my body was holding in water - I felt bloated but I was being careful with my food and watched everything religiously on MFP.

In Mosley's book he explains that in fact we tear our muscles a bit when we start training if we've not done exercises for a long time. BC explained to me that the water retention could be because my body was using fluids for repare work. Grin

In hindsight I think it was that . Since I've watched the scales go down. Wink

LilyJoAndMe · 08/02/2014 10:36

Well done Badger !

ernesttheBavarian · 08/02/2014 10:42

Hopeful, that's es to me about the recipe thing on MFP. Thanks for the tip sounds great esp as I do a lot of cooking. Do you have coeliac disease too - gf muffins?

NT I got a fit bit 31 dec. I got one for shopping for Christmas and after a week just had to get one. It is brilliant. Really motivates me. If towards evening I'm nowhere near my step or distance goal I just have to go for a walk or run. It has made me really move a lot more. Now when I'm doing break duty I March around the playground making sure I get my step count up. Mine has altimeter so counts floors climbed so im running up and down stairs to get that count up too. I can obsess over my weight charts and also it encourages me to go to bed much earlier. I used to think I walked a lot in my job as I am on my feet most of the time but do in his sedentary job had a higher count! I now also park about 10 minutes walk away from work which I never did before. If you do also gets o e you can get really competitive with the weekly review which is even more fun. Can you tell I'm a fan? I got do a flex but I got a one for myself. There is I think also new force.

Emmabryant123 · 08/02/2014 10:43

Wow this thread moves so quickly
Doris don't be to dis heartened I came back from nyc with a five/six pound gain from all the food but soon lost that with 'normal' eating patterns
Womble- my dd broke both wrists last year she loved showing the casts off to people and happy birthday your breakfast sounds divine. I remember in nyc having pancakes with chopped bananas, blueberries and bacon and sausage on the side, I could not finish it!

To the lady abiut her dh shopping. We where empty one day I sent him he got pizza, frozen chips, burgers, crisps, chocolate, beer, milk, bread and chocolate milk.... Hahaha. Typical blokes.

Nfd for me today- woke up in the night and was thirsty and for some reason I hate the taste of water bleurgh so had quarter of a can dr pepper zero- I no not good but I hate water . Woke up tummy growling and hungry have just had a shower and a cup of coffee with milk and no longer feel hungry. Off to town with dd1 to get a few things for her (plus going to buy my self a computer game I think). Might pop into Greggs for some lunch not sure or just wait until dinner of hm minced beef and onion pie, mash, mushy peas and gravy mmm. With home made shortbread and hot choc for afters.
Fd Monday ! Might not be a strict 500 cal one but will be one meal and lof till 6:30/7:00pm.

madhairday · 08/02/2014 11:25

Just saying hello - eatriskier I am so sorry you feel so poorly still :( that sounds horrible. Co-codamol is good stuff isn't it, I'm on full dose while I am fighting this infection, does mean me being zombie like but at least it dulls pain....hope you feel better soon Thanks

womble your poor dd, bless her.

tiggermummy thanks, they have said dd can have the injection treatment but only from 16+, they have said she shouldn't really have the methotrexate until then either, but her psorasis is so extreme :(

Happy birthday to Doris and good luck to any fasters (does anyone do it on a weekend?) I've not had any fast days this week due to being just too unwell but have tried to be sensible hot chocolate and baileys doesn't count so we'll see.

LilyJoAndMe · 08/02/2014 12:01

Madhair - I prefer 16/8 on week-ends but I do think that there are some week-end fasters on the thread.

Ernest thanks for the low down on the fit bit thing . To be honest I wasn't keen until I read your experience. It sounds interesting though. But expensive eh ?

Feeling happy here. Been and weighed myself. I've lost another kilo since last week ! And now I'm just below 11 stone.
I'm sooooo pleased ! GrinSmileGrin

This week I've really watched it because tomorrow's my birthday and tonight my DH is taking me out to a posh resto - but I don't know where.
Am 16/8 today in preparation.

ernesttheBavarian · 08/02/2014 12:10

I guess it is expensive but I used my Christmas money so I took it as a present so didn't stress about it. And it has definitely made me so much more motivated to eat sleep and move miles more/better. It keeps me focused and aware and i can hand on heart say many times I wouldn't have even thought of going for a run if not for that and as I didn't want a chap score I actively really really wanted to get out there. So it has definitely been worth every penny.

BsshBossh · 08/02/2014 12:33

Happy birthday Doris. Those pancakes sound delicious. I think you'll have to adjust your TDEE downwards, especially if you've constantly been dieting - longterm yo-yo and low calorie dieting negatively impacts your metabolism and you might be seeing the effects of this. There is a school of thought that recommends stopping all weightloss efforts temporarily and repairing your metabolism by eating at TDEE for several months - yes, you gain lbs but then your body adjusts and weight stabilises. That's when you can resume weightloss efforts again eg 5:2 or eating daily at 10/15% below TDEE (no more crash dieting!).

If you don't want to do this then I agree with BigChoc's plan for you.

I'm one of the lucky ones who has never dieted so when I started trying to lose weight two years ago I was (and still am) able to eat loads and still lose weight. My metabolism is very strong.

almostthereagain · 08/02/2014 13:16

Don't think my post worked yesterday but was offering lots of sympathy to those ailing & positive vibes to poor badger along with a suggestion to go ahead with the wedding, gain strength from being a team & have a party at a later date. Hope you enjoyed your walk on the beach with dcs & are able to look at the good things in life, good things will come, delighted to see you're already feeling more positive helped on by a fantastic lossSmile
I agree with choc & bsh doris Have a wonderful b'day then make a real effort to eat clean for at least a week. Once you see a loss you will be spurred on to make the right choices.
Well done lily & other losersGrin such a good feeling to get under another marker.
betsy my dh also shops like that & choc I've had him in training for over 20yrsHmm So distracted by special offers yet no milk or loo roll comes homeConfused When I was hardly able to move last week & was moaning about the state of the house he said 'don't worry, it'll still be there when you're better!' Hmm
Luckily, whispers, it's me heading off to the Caribbean, sorry!! Will, try to send some sunshine home to heal all the poorliesThanks
Tried on my bikini & combination of 5:2 & fairly limited (due to chronic back pain last week) has certainly made a difference. 1 more week then I'll post my total loss. Have a good w/e all.

almostthereagain · 08/02/2014 13:17

Limited exercise last week...

tiggermummy70 · 08/02/2014 13:46

Happy birthday Doris, you share the day with my daughter she is 7. Grin

I have a fitbit one which I got for Christmas. I had an ultra before that. I killed it after 2years. love my one & the fact I can sync it to phone on go, my kids even like trying to guess how many lines on phone app dashboard I have greened up by the time I pick them up from school! On MFP & fitbit my user name is same as here without the numbers.

anyone else think they were going to write something else and can't remember who to? think I need to write notes!

BigChocFrenzy · 08/02/2014 13:56

Almost Your DH ! I....was moaning about the state of the house he said 'don't worry, it'll still be there when you're better!'
Angry on your behalf at that thoughtless knobhead
