Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and were a friendly bunch.

Tips and Links: Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Blimey this thread is dangerous to the health. Wimbledon sorry to hear about your dd. mine dislocated her elbow recently and that was traumatic enough. Hope you're both over the shock.

And all the other tonsillitis /virus sufferers, best wishes.

I met a fried in a weather spoons pub for lunch. Ordered piri piri chicken with rice. They brought half a chicken! Anyway, yes, I ate it all (shame) and after glanced at the menu - apparently including rice and coleslaw 1200 cals! I had one tube of Parma violets and some cherries in the cinema. So even though it's a NFD I basically am over budget for dinner. Am shocked. Still, it's making much more aware. I looked at loads of sweets and they were all a gazillion calories .

Took dd to see Sherman and Mr Peasbody. Her and loads of kids were sobbing. Even at the end it wasn't,t jolly enough to get her over the trauma. I didn't think she was particularly delicate, having 3 robust big brothers so watch out if planning to see it.

BsshBossh · 07/02/2014 19:51

Your poor DD Wombles! Hope she heals soon. Remind her that she can draw all over her cast :)

bishboschone · 07/02/2014 20:14

I have done two fd this week and in sticking to 3oo cals below my tdee the rest of the week so if I don't lose weight this week I'll be cross. It's my totm so that won't help but still.

womblesofwestminster · 07/02/2014 20:15

Half an hour to cook rice, WTF??

womblesofwestminster · 07/02/2014 20:15

Sorry, that was random, but I'm starving.

ernesttheBavarian · 07/02/2014 20:33

Womble, why half an hour to cook rice, takes half that, 14 minutes with Basmati. You got a fancy rice or?

jjlou · 07/02/2014 20:37

Hello everyone. This is my first post, but have been looking at the site & using the helpful info since starting the 5:2 thing a couple of weeks ago (muchas gracias to all). But I have a question.....

This is a NFD & I'm about to use nearly up to my TDEE (1800) with my dinner. I have MFP set to sedentary. But, I have also been to the gym & even underestimating, I think I have burned 400 calories. Do I now get to drink eat these additional calories?

ErrolTheDragon · 07/02/2014 20:45

My basmati only takes 10 (plus however long to get the water boiling... not long now I've got an induction hob) - and brown basmati 20. Of course 'cauliflower rice' wins hands down for speed though perhaps not the job if you're starving!

womblesofwestminster · 07/02/2014 20:52

Cauliflower rice? Tell me more!

I'm just cooking bog-standard brown rice.

ernesttheBavarian · 07/02/2014 21:11

hi Jjlou and welcome. I'm sorry I can't answer your question. I'm only a newbie myself too and still learning the ropes myself. But wanted to welcome you to this very informative thread. Good luck. What's your current weight and goal weight?

jjlou · 07/02/2014 21:21

My current weight is 11.9 & the healthy weight would be 9.9. Although when I get on the scales on Sunday, I am hoping some will have come off. I've always been a 'strapping lass', but a desk job & 4 hour dalily commute have done for me over the last couple of years.

Perhaps I won't drink those extra calories after all.

Lilliput · 07/02/2014 21:24

Another pound off this week, really pleased. I have lost 8 lbs in a month.

jjlou · 07/02/2014 21:31

Wow Lilliput, that is amazing. The first week I did this I put on 3 lbs becuase I went crazy on the NFDs. Really hoping for better results this week.

ernesttheBavarian · 07/02/2014 21:32

Doris meant to say, I was reading Michael Mosley's book fats exercise and he had a few interesting things to say about walking.

ernesttheBavarian · 07/02/2014 21:36

4 hour daily commute. Poor thing.

Megrim · 07/02/2014 21:43

MrsF hard to describe the relief the relief when the thing burst (I can still remember) but I was a bit wary of TMI.

Womble What a star! We have a frequent flyer card at A&E for our DSs. I suggest you avoid rugby as a sport of choice.

jjlou · 07/02/2014 21:48

I get through a lot of books!

tiggermummy70 · 07/02/2014 21:58

womble : hope your dd is ok and learns to bounce.

feel sorry for everyone who is ill. I got tonsillitis at 4 and nearly killed me. couldn't breathe!
Dd1 had sleep apnea at 2, dd2 snored for England by 3, both asleep in the car now and you could hear a pin drop Smile It was a lot of stress getting Dd1 done, they ended up declaring her as failure to thrive! DD2 snoring plus glue ear so needed to sort before she started school.

I doubt I'll get time to get ob tomorrow with Dd1 birthday etc.

so FD'ers & NFD'ers I wish you good day and will try catch up on Sunday eve.

Megrim · 07/02/2014 21:59

jjlou if you drink eat "back" the calories you have exercised off, your weight loss will be slower. Have a pint of water before pouring a glass of wine / beer.

jjlou · 07/02/2014 22:05

Thank you Megrim, that's good advice. I am having the one glass of wine my TDEE allows and off to bed. Oh yes I am.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2014 22:11

jjlou Don't eat or drink back those calories. That can cause problems, because most people seriously over-estimate their exercise and / or forget or under-estimate some food items.

Give it a few weeks and see how your weight loss goes. If you find you are losing too quickly, you can always up your TDEE a bit. This is better than stalling and being discouraged.

Can someone summarise the cauliflower rice please .

Breadandwine · 07/02/2014 23:46

Can someone summarise the cauliflower rice please

bishboschone Have a look at this thread on the Fast Day forum (well worth browsing in your spare time).

hopefulgum · 08/02/2014 00:04

All this talk of illness is making me feel a bit queasy!

I used to get recurring faringitis which was horrible. I couldn't even swallow my own spit. That was charming...spitting it into a bowl for three days! As soon as I got antibiotics I got better. The funny thing is I seemed to always get it when staying on the in-laws farmHmm perhaps they were poisoning me?? No, not really, they would actually be quite open about it if they didGrin

I do hope everyone is on the mend and feeling better asap.

womble, sorry to hear your DD has a broken arm. Poor thing. And now for you, all the bathing etc will be a bit of a pain.

I have just made gluten free muffins for breakfast as I wanted something carby (I know, I know, I should be having protein, but I am craving carbs and I am going to have a long swim this morning.) Anyway I put the recipe into MFP (I love that I can do that, it is a revelation) and they were 740 calories per muffin (they are large)! Shock OMG. So I had half a one. It is great to use the recipe thingy on MFP and really get an idea of how many calories are in everything. One of the reasons these muffins were such a calorie bomb was because I used coconut oil - 1/2 cup = 1000 calories Shock Next time I'll put yoghurt into them instead. I have to admit that having half one has filled me up.

I made key lime pie last night (after accidentally ordering 4 bags of limes instead of 4 limes! Numpty! Confused) It is my DD1's 17th birthday today and she wanted it for her cake. It's only 470 calories per slice, so I will save those calories for tonight.

Bigchoc, I am so Envy of you having 2 cleaners! How nice that would be. I have 2 cleaners, but they are my daughters (I pay them) and at age 13 and 17 it is good, but not great. They just don't see things like I do, and aren't all that thorough. However, it saves me doing everything!

It is Saturday here and I am quite proud of myself having survived a week of full-time teaching (which I haven't done for years), and I've not resorted to wine or chocolate! Woo hoo Thanks I'd call that a NSV.

Have a lovely weekend.

BTW, has anyone seen Toffee? I miss her posts Sad

Not2bObvious · 08/02/2014 07:04

I'm just like Shock every time I've had a read the last few days, what a shocking batch of illnesses and hurt littlies there are about. Flowers to you all and really really hope it turns a corner and recovery is on the way. Have been turning back into a fatty bum bum over the last 2 weeks, however I am turning the ship around and getting back on track. Starting my third 16:8 and plan to get a JM under my belt before I eat today. I did her no trouble zones one last Saturday and again on Thursday, omg, I still felt pain in my tummy muscles(I didn't know of some of the muscles that ached!) But today I think a bit of cardio will suffice.
Contemplating buying a fitbit, any opinions?
