The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

ELR. Has your DD got penicillin for the tonsilitis? Paranoid about it now as its the strep bacteria which can go on to cause scarlet fever.

It's easy to spot the difference between bacterial tonsilitis and viral.
Both are equally excruciating. But viral means you don't have spots of white puss on tonsils or back of throat. And those areas will be swollen are extremely red.

Bacterial you will have the pus spots and you may or may not be red.

You can't become immune to bacterial tonsilitis which is why so many get it repeatedly.

I assume she is calpoled up to the eyeballs? It will help with some of the pain but not much.

Hospital consultant told me to not bother with eating but drink drink drink. And anything you fancy drinking. So tempt her with milk shakes smoothies which are calories rich and will fill her for a bit.
Sad For your DD. it's awful.
(((ELR)))

Dotty342kids · 07/02/2014 13:49

badger don't despair! I too am youth and community work trained. I know that statutory services are pretty much dead and gone now but don't despair. I don't know what your particular areas of expertise are but if you've done any work with young people with special needs / educational issues then have you had a look at what might be available in the school / PRU sector? Or, if you've worked with vulnerable young people then what about work in the social care / residential child care settings? Or with some of the big national charities like Barnardo's or The Children's Society?
I moved to a rural area several years ago but have found an online youth work type role for a national charity - you might be able to find something like that too, as many youth charities are venturing into the digital world.
Don't panic Smile and let me know if I can be of any help.

MrsFlorrick · 07/02/2014 13:51

((((Betsy)))). When you're ill from a simple cold you still feel awful and exhausted and you can barely drag yourself out of bed.

Don't feel like you're moaning. You're not well.

Wow. The shitty weather is making us all sick. Damp weather does this. A nice crisp frost would sort it all. Sadly nice frosty weather brings out D&V bug. Blurgh.

I just had a look in the mirror in day light. Fecking hell!!! Yikes.

Swelling almost gone but face is scarlet red patches with millions of pus filled white spots.
And other areas where is starting to heal are dark brown patches with pale yellow flaking skin. Urrrrgggghhh.
I do NOT look good. Quite worried about scarring and dark patches remaining. Confused

Last time I had scarlet fever it was just on my body. My face was completely unaffected. My body had similar crusty flaking nastiness for about 5 weeks after the course of ABs.

How the hell do I hide a Freddie cruger face on the school run for that long??
No way you could apply makeup. Nothing for it to stick to.
(Off to check out paper bags and balaclavas....)

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 07/02/2014 13:56

MrsF - what about a snood? They seem to be back in fashion! Grin

ELR - poor DD :(

What on earth is going on with all these lurgies on the thread! I do think that the lack of a proper cold spell so far this winter hasn't helped. None of the bugs have been killed off.

MrsFlorrick · 07/02/2014 14:02

Alibabaa. Grin You're a genius!!! Perfect. If I get a loose knit snood, I can pull it all the way up and still see out. Grin
And trendy to boot. Get me eh.

ELR · 07/02/2014 14:04

mrsF the biggest chanel sunglasses you can find! Yes even in this weather!
Feel really bad haven't even taken dd to the doctors so not even sure what it is, just looked at tonsils and tongue both look a little red and swollen but no white or pussy spots. Dd has only ever been to the doctors once and that was to confirm chicken pox ds who is 8 has been a few times with croup and balinitis but other than that I don't bother. The doctors surgery is only 5 or 6 doors down from me too!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 07/02/2014 14:06
Grin

I've actually been toying with getting one myself. Hats don't suit me at all, I have too much hair I think, and I would love to be snuggly.

MrsFlorrick · 07/02/2014 14:14

ELR. Grin Sunglasses and my snood. My scabby face should be well hidden. Great. That's my hopefully temporary camouflage sorted.

If your DD doesn't have visible white/yellow spots of pus then its probably viral. Check her temp. Viral tonsilitis rarely goes over 39c apparently. Bacterial you can go over 40.
Also keep checking her throat every few hours in case of change.

Don't feel bad about not taking her.

It's instinct. You know when it's serious. That said every tonsilitis in our house gets checked.

I had become causal about it as its almost 25 years since I last had scarlet fever. I used be knocking down the GPs door for every sore throat.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2014 15:16

OMG, MrsF How horrible for you. But you shall have your normal pretty face back again, at the latest within a few weeks.

Yes, it's a very unhealthy time of year. Most of the office is sneezing and spluttering over everyone else.

Flowers to all with lurgies. REST and DRINK WATER

Roll on spring !

MrsFlorrick · 07/02/2014 15:38

Thanks Bigchoc.

I googled and apparently the NHS use Manuka honey for strep and staph skin infections that are resistant to ABs.

So I sent DH out to get high strength Manuka which is currently smeared over my face neck and back where the pus, red and brown patches are.

Beats your green face pack Bigchoc Grin

I look a proper fright but with the honey a tasty one Wink

BetsyBell · 07/02/2014 16:21

bigchoc I am going to have to miss Taekwondo class again today aren't I? Eugh, I get to do all the stuff I have to do (work, cooking, laundry, grocery shopping) only to miss out on the fun stuff.

MrsF Impressed by your good humour over the face pus and scarlett fever. You poor thing. Can you pretend you've been for an expensive face treatment? Huge Chanel sunglasses a must!

I had tonsilitis for the first time last last year - absolutely horrific. I definitely fear it returning - makes me feel very sorry for the poor kids who get recurring bouts all the time. I wouldn't worry too much about the not eating ELR your daughter will catch up when she feels better. That said I think I just ate porridge or mashed banana on toast for a few days. And endless lemon and ginger tea. Hot lemon and honey would be good too.

I do get (and currently have) mouth ulcers on my tonsils every time I get a cold/run down, which equals ear pain and throat pain. If it wasn't for that I'd probably be far less miserable.

Weekend now, no work so will get some time to recover properly. Sun has made an appearance this afternoon too :)

womblesofwestminster · 07/02/2014 16:24

Well, I chose a good day to fast.

My 3 year old broke her arm today. Just got back from A&E.

Eatriskier · 07/02/2014 16:27

Dr mrsF may have diagnosed me as well. My white spotty throat is rather hideous. DH lovingly popped out and got some manuka honey after reading that post earlier. It definitely seemed to help a lot. I wish I had something to offer in return other than a virtual Brew or Cake

MrsFlorrick · 07/02/2014 16:38

Eatriskier. (((Hugs)))) ugh for you. Hope the Manuka sorts the throat.

Betsy. The good humour is a bit of fakery to keep myself cheery and happy.
I may well end up with facial scarring from this.
But for it to have the best chance of healing, I need to be positive and happy. So lots of Grin even though it may seem odd.
(Strong) is what I need to be to heal.

Megrim · 07/02/2014 16:44

I once thought I had flu and tonsillitis together - turned out it was an abscess (a quinsy). I had always suffered from recurring tonsilitis and the doctors were never keen to give me antibiotics, so thinking it was just an especially bad bout I treated it myself by gargling with TCP and taking painkillers. Not recommended, as I later found out, as a quinsy is a medical emergency and can be serious.

MrsFlorrick · 07/02/2014 16:56

Megrim. Urgh. Did it burst? Yuk.
Uni friend had one which burst in her throat. Few of us were with her as she was ill and in pain.
She said the pain ceased as soon as it burst. Yuk.

Emmabryant123 · 07/02/2014 17:09

Not been a good day.
Two fried egg sandwiches
A left over boiled egg
Two cherry bakwells
Huge bowl pasta I mean huge 600 cal worth with bolognaise and cheese
Whole tub Hagen daaz
:O
Fasting Monday and tomorrow am now doing a mini fast (one meal at my mums) and lof till then.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 07/02/2014 17:14

wombles Shock poor little thing, how is she?

MrsFlorrick · 07/02/2014 17:28

Oh Wombles. SadSad Your poor LO. So small as well. Sad

How bad is the fracture?

Eatriskier · 07/02/2014 17:33

wombles I must have cross posted with you. Poor DD. I've broken my arms 4 times (once is just not good enough for me Wink) and its never been great. Hope you're both over the shock.

ELR · 07/02/2014 17:33

Thanks for all the nice messages, think dd is on the mend she requested my special nachos for tea didn't want to dissuade her from eating so made them even though I was thinking sore throat and nachos don't go together!
Anyway she wolfed them down as did I, nachos tend to be a calorie bomb so I try to make them as nutritious as possible by using plain corn chips and adding lots of yummy stuff these ones had avocado, sweetcorn, black beans, fresh salsa, fresh coriander and sour cream then topped with a little half fat mature cheddar and grilled absolutely delicious.

She's also had a wham bar and half a can of ginger beer and she's instagrammed it all so def on the mend!!

Only bummer is i think I'm getting a cold now, nose blocked and sneezing and feeling rough, hope it's only mild or doesn't kick in until tomorrow afternoon as I've got two back to back cooking lessons with 16 delightful 5-10 year olds to get through tomorrow. We are doing super foods this term so if nothing else the food will help me feel better!
Super minestrone, rosemary and garlic Focachia and for something sweet blueberry, cardamom and orange bread and butter pudding.

Sorry if you are fasting with all this talk of food, but you can have it tomorrow!

ELR · 07/02/2014 17:37

wombles hope your dd isn't in to much pain! kids do tend to get over these things quite quickly though it's just us parents that are traumatised!

womblesofwestminster · 07/02/2014 17:42

Thanks guys. She's got her arm in a cast. It's her elbow that broke (she jumped off the sofa and fell on it - ouch!) She's my PFB and this is her first proper injury so you can imagine the dramatics on my part. Blush However she's one of these rare breeds of DC that doesn't make a big fuss, even when in pain. Now, if it had been her brother, I'd be sitting here with a Wine sabotaging my fast! lol

How's everyone's fast going today?

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2014 18:28

Betsy Don't you have someone else to do all those chores until you're better ?
Or maybe it can wait until you are better ?

I'm on my own, but I have 2 cleaners who do everything.
Shopping can always be postponed - I could feed the village for a week out of my larder, fridge and freezer. I bet you could too.
I don't even do laundry when ill - those 50 pairs of jeans, sweatshirts etc mean it can wait. I'm sure you have wardrobes full of things to wear.

You need to be lazier !
