Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 38 -"Oh that this too, too solid flesh would melt" : Well, Hamlet, it can in a healthy, sustainable way. Join our friendly 5:2/IF support group"

The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and were a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Tips and Links: Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
Inspirational: eatriskiers thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.
Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Oh February's turning out to be a bit of a horror show isn't it? Hugs to MrsF, Ipoked and eatriskier, and anyone else who needs one Flowers.

Just deleted a big boring self-indulgent moan. I hate feeling negative and just want my peppy-self back, seems to have been dampened down by the constant rain.

MrsFlorrick · 07/02/2014 09:08

Betsy. Self indulgent moans welcome. Grin

Zedzed ShockShockShockShock your poor brother. Omg. What on earth is going on these days. Shudder. Sounds like I was lucky!!

Oh and Alibaabaa. You posted
About your DS and withholding poo. I meant to thank you for the support. It helped. Also makes me feel less alone. Grin And to hear your DS goes willingly now is a great relief to me.

MrsFlorrick · 07/02/2014 09:11

Ipoked. Hmm. Tricky one.

I assume you live in a small community a bit remote??

How about looking at youth outreach work in a nearby town/city on behalf if SS or council where you're "mobile" ie can work partly at home and travelling to nearby towns/villages?

Isn't that perhaps an option?

TIP, please wade in with your sensible and clever advice for Ipoked. I'm sure there must be something you can think of.

MrsFlorrick · 07/02/2014 09:13

Bssh. GrinGrin Yes I will shortly be your BMI twin again Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 07/02/2014 09:21

Flowers all round for the ill and sad. And a special award for MrsF for sounding remarkably cheerful. I'll add my support on the poo withholding - its one of those things (along with bedwetting) that no-one ever seems to discuss IRL so you do feel alone. My DD had both of those, the first into yr1 and the second into yr3 .... 'this too shall pass', it seems a long time ago now. In both cases one of the most helpful things I was able to do for her (eventually) was to back off, stop getting (or appearing) stressed about it - it really is something they need to take control of for themselves.

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 07/02/2014 09:31

Will catch up with the thread later on, but wanted to report my Friday weigh-in loss of -1.5lb, total of -6.5lb since pre-Christmas weight and not a single gains week!

Like you all said, it might be slow (ish) but the trend is downwards! ThanksThanksThanks all for your support and getting through my FDs. Time for some vegan Cake Wink

ErrolTheDragon · 07/02/2014 10:12

Same weight as last week but that's not surprising - apart from DDs birthday, I can't remember how much tea I've had this morning, in among clearing out the living room prior to having a new gas fire fitted (the wall has to be drilled for balanced flue so expecting dust and the room needed a spring clean anyhow).

Bigchoc, my dog is not a short-arse. He's got a long arse, short legs Grin. When (if!) the canal towpath is dry enough I do sometimes take him for a run - he usually sits down and looks at me Hmm, then has a gallop to nearly catch up, repeat; then on the way back goes ahead. Well, I may try later to see if he'll walk through the village, armed with some treats and with his harness rather than just a collar.

ELR · 07/02/2014 10:56

Morning all, glad to see everyone is all bright and chirpy even if still ill. betsy moan away it gives us all something to think about and often relate to. Offering support to others makes people feel good and allows the other person a chance to offload.

Well I will share my event of the morning which looking back now makes me laugh but at the time was awful. Was just on my way to my pilates class when I caught my finger on the door which resulted in a massive splinter. I had a panic attack, broke out in a hot sweat, went dizzy and felt sick and had to go to the loo several times, took me about 10 minutes to calm down and then a further 45 minutes to get it out! How pathetic is that? Finger is absolutely killing now, it was my index finger on my right hand so hard to do stuff.

Got weighed this morning on my defective scales ranged from 10.3 to 10.8
So I got measured instead half an inch off waist, hips and bust.

ELR · 07/02/2014 10:57

And I had to miss pilates!!

DorisAllTheDay · 07/02/2014 11:01

MrsF, I've just caught up with your latest installments. I'm so sorry to hear all you were put through - that's terrible - but glad that things seem to be on the mend now. Have some more Thanks. Eatriskier, hope you're starting to feel better too.

(((( Badger )))) What horrible news for you. Is it worth thinking about your longer-term options? If it's unlikely that any positions will become available in the field you work in, would retraining for something else be a possibility? Anything you could study for while being a (temporary) SAHM? Is there anything other than youth and community work you can see yourself doing?

Thanks to anyone else who is (or has a dc who is) poorly or having a hard time for any reason.

And congratulations Don'tBeBlue and anyone else who's had a SV today.

I appear to have lost my mojo. Today was supposed to be an FD but I bought two bagels on the way to work and I've eaten them. Sigh.

Megrim · 07/02/2014 11:25

Badger so sorry to hear your news. Think of all the abstract skills that you have (people management, organizational skills, problem solving) and you'll find that they can apply to a wide range of things. Don't be afraid to tell prospective employers how wonderful you are, and don't be put off if a job requires 10 skills and you "only" have 8 of them - it's a known fact that a bloke would look at the same ad and apply if he had just 2 of the skills.

BetsyBell · 07/02/2014 11:37

Permission to moan - thanks ELR (hope you're feeling better now - sounds frightening and relates to what I'm about to post a bit I think) and MrsF.

So all it takes is a few days of being slightly under the weather and I feel miserable, flabby and unfit. I have realised part of the anxiety is not the immediate extra few pounds but the fear of sliding back to where I was.

How easy it is for our body to rebel. For me, a cold and bad sleep and I feel like I'm back at square 1. All those who do this with young children and battling against illness and or medication - I take my hat off to you, I really do.

10 days ago I was rejoicing about some newly appearing muscle definition, feeling like I could do anything. Now I feel like I can barely get through a day in tact.

People near and dear to me have been and are going through unbelievably awful health crises. I guess I'm just seeing how fragile it all is, how precarious our bodies are, how little it takes to change everything.

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 07/02/2014 12:21

Thanks again to everyone for the kind and supportive messages, really has meant a lot this morning and that you've not shouted at me for the massive binge!
Going to take the kids to the beach now, its windy so it'll be quiet and perfect for clearing my head a bit and they can have a run around, they're wrapped up well, sure they'll be fine. I'll speak to DP when we're both home this evening and see where we go from here...need to think positively!

ELR · 07/02/2014 12:30

Exactly betsy things can change in the blink of an eye from fantastic to utterly shit! There's always someone worse off than you but at that moment in time you are the one feeling crap and it doesn't matter what's going on around you it's you that matters.
So take it easy, and think back to that feeling of euphoria you had last week then remember how many times you've felt it before and know it will be back soon you've just got a day or two of crap to contend with first!!

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2014 12:31

MrsF Good to hear you are looking and feeling a bit better. It must have been upsetting for you both to scare your little DS

Ipoked I'm so sorry to hear about your redundancy, wedding, house.
So miserably disappointing for you. Your life is on hold for now.
Sad
I do hope you can find a suitable job quickly, with the pay and conditions you want.

Bssh I like the Holland & Barrett ones Here also because I buy a lot of supplements from them; they have a wider range, better doses and get my almond butter, flaxmeal etc at the same time.

Anybody got any suggestions of what I can tempt dd with to eat something. She's been off sick for the last three days with sore throat and headache she's hardly eaten a thing, she's 11 and not a fussy eater. She says she's hungry but the thought of eating is making her feel worse.
I've managed to get her to eat half an apple and half a slice of blueberry and pear cake I made this morning and she had half a small chicken wrap lastnight but other than lemongrass and ginger cordial she's eaten nothing since Tuesday night.
Ive offered pizza, ice cream, chocolate, smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels(her fave) I'm at a loss!!

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2014 12:42

Betsy Do post when you want a moan. This is absolutely the right place to do so. We are all here to support each other, moan, laugh and change our bods together.

Remember, you are a slim person with a temporary lurgy and will never be a fat person again.
The lurgy will go; you allow yourself a few days of just gentle walks, then you shall resume TaeKwando as a fighting fit Betsy

Ipokedabadger
Redundancy is a bummer : and you will never ever quite trust an employer again after its been done to you.
However, you have some warning and some thinking time.
DO NOT cancel your wedding. Scale it right back, but you need something to keep focussed on when they start messing you around with dates and hours near the end.
There are some really good HR / employment people on MN ... have a look at this board
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/employment_issues
and if finance gets horrible, this one
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/legal_money_matters

and as for the pizza : I hope it was delicious Wink

TalkinPeace · 07/02/2014 12:55

ELR
I used to get tonsilitis as a kid .... overcooked macaroni with lashings of grated cheese
cottage cheese
yogurt
milk
scrambled egg
lots and lots of soft, mildly alkali foods
try smoked salmon wrapped round phili/cream cheese - into a tube : easy to swallow ...
can do the same with ham or salami ...

Megrim · 07/02/2014 12:57

ELR Banana milkshake? Chocolate milk? You might want to try a rehydration drink (Dioralyte or similar) as if she's getting dehydrated and her salts are going out of whack that will make her feel much worse.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2014 13:10

I cancelled HIIT spin last night and will reduce training this weekend too, as just starting a sore throat & cold.
No problem: my immune system soon smashes a cold.
I ate TWO bacon & veg pizzas last night instead of training, but I allow myself one really greedy day per week. Mmm, isn't melted cheese just the best.
Smile
Today I'm well enough to FD as usual. How the Friday gang doing ?

OP posts:
BsshBossh · 07/02/2014 13:11

Thanks BigChoc. I've seen that brand in H&B so will pop in and have another look.

ELR · 07/02/2014 13:13

Thanks guys, managed to get her to eat a pitta bread pizza, which was a seeded pitta topped with cheddar, red pepper spring onion and chorizo I also had some so we ate it together. I made us both a cup of bouillon thinking the salt would be good for her but she took one sip and said do you actually like that?? She's just been and got an innocent smoothie out of the fridge so that's a good sign, even though she is yet to open it!!
The pasta and cheese thing may be a good idea for later.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2014 13:15

Badger I agree with Tip that you should still get married. Apart from anything else, marriage gives you some extra protections that are worth having, especially with DCs.

Just wear the nicest outfit you already have, spend a few quid at the registry office and optionally invite your 4 best friends to lunch at your home / Starbucks coffee afterwards.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2014 13:19

Well done, DontBeBlue. Slow and steady does it. You will never put those pounds back on, because you lost them healthily.
