The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Zed I'll be interested to hear about the effects of the royal jelly. DD (13) has severe psoriasis - ie creams and light treatment make sod all difference so she's on methotrexate :( - but still have to apply 4 different creams every night and that sodding coal tar shampoo, poor love. Have you found other things that help at all?

Eatriskier · 06/02/2014 18:06

zed if they ask me to repeat the fasting test I may actually kill someone. with lack of childcare options for DS except for thursday afternoons it means a sever lack of coffee and a very angry and upset eat Grin

zedzedzed · 06/02/2014 18:19

Am going to order some Royal Jelly today, I guess I'll give it at least a month and get back to you mad your poor girl, it must be a nightmare to be a teen AND have that. My stepdaughter had acne and it was awful for her confidence, on the mend now with the right medication. I'm lucky enough not to have patches on my face or head, but it's everywhere else in coin-sized scabs like an itchy leopard.

Only 45mins till nom-nom. We're gonna make it people.
Now I just have to find some busy work for tonight so I don't eat my own arm at 9.30pm.

Dotty342kids · 06/02/2014 18:29

zedzed may I recommend a bath / bathroom based pamper session to keep you well away from the temptations of the kitchen? Smile

zedzedzed · 06/02/2014 18:35

Yes! I'm going to do just that thanks Dotty I'm going to take my scabby bum up for a lovely, long, itchy soak...before packing for a filthy weekend on our building site!

BsshBossh · 06/02/2014 18:46

zedzed from your DH's recent appreciative comments I think it will be a filthy weekend Grin

zedzedzed · 06/02/2014 18:47

Ha! Well we do have a lot of rooms that need christening...may be a bit ouchy what with all the rubble tho!

DorisAllTheDay · 06/02/2014 18:49

Welcome to the UK, Ernest. Brighton is fab - though I gather the weather down south is rather less than fab at the moment. Last time I was there (a couple of years ago) we discovered the best ever all-day-breakfast cafe somewhere in the Lanes I think.

Peplum, walking trousers come from outdoors-type shops, or you can get them online. My current favourites are the Mountain Warehouse winter lined ones. They come up rather big for the size, which makes me dead chuffed because a 10 (short) fits me perfectly! Oh yes, the other good thing about walking trousers is they come in short, regular or long, so there's no taking up hems and boring things like that. Mountain Warehouse often have sales, so if you're buying online it's worth waiting for the sale price. I also like the Craghoppers kiwi trousers, which also have lined versions for winter. Rohan are probably the best quality, but very expensive, so definitely wait for a sale unless you have wads of cash to spare.

I've had a very bad NFD. No idea how far over TDEE because I stopped counting when a huge piece of flapjack followed an apple danish to where it would do most harm. I've now put a big notice over the breadbin at home - 'Drink a cup of tea first', and a more discreet post-it on my computer at work saying just, 'Have a cup of tea'. Hopefully this will remind me that when I'm craving carbs, nine times out of ten having a drink, especially a hot drink, is all it takes to satisfy it. Feeling very Angry with myself after such a good week so far. Oh well, tomorrow is another day, and it's an FD so a chance to make up some lost ground.

Best wishes and Thanks to the poorly ones and your children. I hope you're taking good care of yourselves - and being taken care of.

tiggermummy70 · 06/02/2014 18:58

madhair: my mum was on mexatrate for years and it only limited effect.
I'm not sure what the age limit is on embrel it is injections but vaguely aware its not an every day. thing. Might be worth researching as a possibility for daughter when she is older???
You could hardly tell she had psoriasis after first year.

Tiredemma · 06/02/2014 19:03

Oh God im in agony-

Haven't had any white bread since new year. Had a successful FD yesterday (507 cals yay!!) - met a friend today for lunch and had a ham salad baguette (place only had white baguette)
I have chronic indigestion- agony

DorisAllTheDay · 06/02/2014 19:04

Oh, I forgot, someone (don't remember who) asked me how come I do so much walking. Well, I've always liked walking, but a year and a half ago when I was at my biggest, it was becoming very difficult - I could only walk for about 15 minutes on the flat without needing a rest, and I had to avoid anything resembling a hill. That was what kick-started me to lose weight. I live near the coast, so I have lots of nice places to walk nearby. I work about four miles from where I live: of that, I can walk the first two miles along the prom which I do every day, and the last half mile is quite a pleasant bit of city centre with nice buildings and not too much traffic. So unless the weather is completely foul, I do that every day, both ways, making a total of an hour and a half's steady paced walking. The middle mile and a half is either on a busy main road which isn't that pleasant to walk, or in the summer, I can take a detour through parkland which I do sometimes on the way home, adding another half hour. Weekends I try to make sure I walk everywhere, and I usually do my prom walk even though I'm not going to work. In the summer I try to do a long country walk at least once a fortnight, but I don't tend to keep that up in the winter. I also go on walking holidays. My first 'big' target was an expensive walking holiday abroad which I knew I wouldn't be able to enjoy unless I lost enough weight to handle the hills and the distances.

I hate going to the gym and although I like swimming I find it a bit too much of a faff and never get into a routine of going. But I positively look forward to my walks each day, and I love the time in the open air not really thinking about anything - and not eating anything! Time walking is time not spent sitting on the sofa wishing I had cake. I know that walking isn't anything like as good for weight loss as the stuff people do in gyms, but the way I look at it is that I'm trying to establish good habits for life and I'm much more likely to keep up something that I enjoy rather than make myself do something I don't like at all.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/02/2014 19:38

Doris - I should think that much consistent walking is way better than most people do at a gym. I need to walk more .

ErrolTheDragon · 06/02/2014 19:43

Just done my FD MFP entry - 451, just finished the squash&chorizo on greens, with a sprinking of parmesan. I also had a mini bag of fridge raiders chicken bits because they needed eating today and DD didn't want them - otherwise I'd have had nearly 100 cals left and was starting to think of bread.

MrsFlorrick · 06/02/2014 19:48

Everyone a big hello! And thanks for the lovely messagesThanksThanks
It's been required!
ELR. When I'm better let's go to that park! Wink
Over the last 48 hours I have seen 9 doctors, been to A&E three times, GP twice etc.

Tuesday I developed an angry red rash all over my face and body. I said to DH, its scarlet fever (I've had it twice and its linked to strep throat).
So we went to out of hours. Lady doctor clueless and wouldn't start me on penicillin. But she gave penicillin to DD because "she was under 5" Hmm

Next morning my face is puffy and the rash is angrier and spreading across my body. Go and see GP who diagnosed scarlet fever and have me penicillin. But he told me to go to A&E if my facial swelling worsened.

That evening my face is twice its normal size and red and scary looking with pussy spots (I know how stunning). So I go out of hours doctor at nearest hospital who said he didn't know what it was and put me in isolation at A&E. Sad
where I saw yet another doctor who was clueless and he fetched a consultant who at first wanted to admit me but then decided I needed a shot of amoxicillin and antihistamine and to go home.
He left junior doctor in charge. Junior, who actually was younger than the jumper I was wearing, was unable to find any amoxicillin Angry I mean wtf it's a massive hospital. Angry

So I go home with nothing but my big pussy swollen red face and body and a raging temperature.

The junior doctor then calls us at home at 1am to tell me that he forgot to tell me my liver results and that I have liver failure and need to go to the GP next day urgently for liver ultra sound and repeat bloods and not to take any medication.
That including the penicillin which is currently saving my life from a deadly strep infection. Sad

I spent the whole night crying. Didn't sleep. Thinking I will leave DC without me.
Go to GP this am. Tell GP what's happened while I am sobbing. She phones hospital lab for bloods and says to me. Your liver enzymes are slightly elevated but you do absolutely not have liver failure.
I gratefully stop snotting all over her surgery.
She phones Medical Registrar on duty and demands that he examines my ever more inflated scabby pussy face.
So off I go to hospital again.
I see I doctor she takes history and examines me, takes blood and swaps of throat and pussy face. And is generally competent and reassuringly smart.
She brings her consultant in who is equally smart and sensible.
And final result (drumroll) is that I do indeed have scarlet fever (no shit I'm like a fucking lobster), the facial swelling is a reaction to the bacteria and the pussy face is more strep bacteria.
My slightly elevated liver enzyme is due to my body fighting infection overtime.
Simples. Got steroids mild ones for a couple of days for swelling and my shot of amoxicillin and my penicillin.

So why the fuck did it take multiple visits and 9 doctors and a very scary unprofessional phonecall in the middle of the night to sort this out. AngryAngryAngry I am too ill to be properly pissed off yet.
Phew as you were.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/02/2014 20:05

MrsF Shock! That junior needs stringing up - I hope his consultant has had an extremely stern word.
Glad you have finally got a diagnosis and treatment.

Doris I love Mountain Warehouse. They do wonderful thermals that are so cosy, and very cheap.
Also love Craghoppers. DH and I both have their winter-lined Kiwis, we wear them for all kinds of things during the winter - they are awesome for days out with the DCs because they are so hardwearing and warm. And they come in short which is a proper short, not short according to most of the high street which is still a 31" leg!!

FD complete. Dinner eaten - cod and lemon fishcake with salad and peas and 5 chips. Grin I felt so full, but now I'm really hungry :( Square of chocolate in a while and then bed for me I think.

Breakfast in the morning is going to be granola with greek yoghurt and blueberries. Mmmmmmm.

almostthereagain · 06/02/2014 20:10

Truly shocking mrs F Shock So sorry you've had this to add to your woes. Hopefully the drugs will kick in fast & you'll begin to get better x

Coveredinweetabix · 06/02/2014 20:12

After Mrs F's medical drama, my post is a bit anodyne. I was just coming in to report that buttermint tea is bloody good. Like drinking a melted Murray mint. I was pleasantly surprised.
Day from hell with the DC so am well & truly over TDEE

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/02/2014 20:16

Where does one obtain butter mint tea? Sounds heavenly.

Southeastdweller · 06/02/2014 20:19

Alibaba I finally found it at a Waitrose (Bloomsbury branch, if you're in London).

MrsFlorrick · 06/02/2014 20:21

Sorry everyone. I am a bit of a topper. Wink

Ali. Waitrose Ocado some sainsb and some Tesco.

Bit random. My local Waitrose and Tesco stock it.

I find it smells like Murray mint but tastes just like mint. It's nice and of one the nicer herbal teas. But don't fret if you can't get it. Just go to holland and barratt and choose one of theirs. Just as nice.

On a positive note this week I have had three days at 1000 cals and today at 600.

Although my puffy face weighs more so probably a stall Wink

Megrim · 06/02/2014 20:26

Wow MrsF, I thought I'd inadvertently wandered into an episode of Casuality there for a moment.

ELR · 06/02/2014 20:28

mrsF how scary, you really are having a run of bad luck! I'm glad you have a diagnosis and your meds have been sorted and here's me feeling sorry for myself with a sniffle and a sore foot!!

Not done too great on my fast day today so have declared it a mini fast/16:8 as had about 1200 cals

MrsFlorrick · 06/02/2014 20:29

Eatriskier. ShockShock What a nightmare! Total screw up.
(((Hugs)))).
Wish I had some advice for you. Not well versed in thyroid issues. Again I hope you get it redone in timely fashion.

MrsFlorrick · 06/02/2014 20:31

Megrim. It was like a combo of casualty and fawlty towers!! In a bad and horrible way.

ELR. Your poor foot though. It's hell when you can't get around properly with young DC in tow.

Eatriskier · 06/02/2014 20:40

Blimey mrsF - that makes my GP run ins seem reasonable. Hope you get better soon
