The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

This weight loss thing is a funny old malarkey. Last Saturday morning, I was a bit despondent to weigh in at 152lbs again as I'd scarcely lost any weight over 2 weeks & was feeling so bloated & seemed to have such massive legs compared to pre Xmas. Monday's FD was fine; yesterday's was bloody hard work but I woke up feeling thin so hopped on the scales and am 149lbs and can do my belt up another notch! No real idea what has made the difference. NFD today and I had the flapjack that had been calling me from the tin all day yesterday!
peplum - that comment about jeans is brilliant
nouv - I'm another one who is a bit sluggish on this woe.
Best wishes to all of you who are ill, esp those with mystery illnesses.

Peplum Rochdale born and bred :)

(Live in Cheshire/N Wales border now though)

zedzedzed · 06/02/2014 15:18

meg what dose was it? Can you ask her please? I shelled out a fortune on super-high dose fish oils last year...they did NOTHING...but will try jelly as lots of people say it's good, but need to know how strong to start with as it's very pricey to experiment! I've had mild psoriasis for years, but it became a leprosy-like-plague-rash from head to toe in the last 3 months of being pregnant...the plague-rash has finally now gone but the psoriasis it left behind is rampant and very disheartening/bloody/itchy/ugly.

pep I wish we were moving this weekend! Nope, just spending our first weekend with the babies at the new house/building site to try and get things moving along. We're hoping for an Easter move, but it's looking more like the 12th of NEVER at the moment.

ELR · 06/02/2014 15:28

Afternoon all, wow I take one week off (been to centre parcs)and it takes me a whole day to read up on the thread!!
Sorry to here everyone's been so ill, I hope you are all getting better.
bsshh well done on goal must feel great, if you've a minute could you share the chicken and olive claudia Roden recipe?
dotty welcome back! think we are about the same with regards to losses and struggling with keeping 5:2 up but I've been back on it again now and do feel better for it.
mrsF so sorry to here about fil and that you've been so ill. When you are feeling a bit better if you fancy a meet up for a stroll in the lovely big park near you just give me a shout.

Well I can't get weighed as scales are well and truly messed up and giving stupid readings so don't know what I weigh but I feel good so that's all that matters!
bigchoc I've been doing the 7 minute work out every day and doing around 12000 steps so keeping up the exercise.
tip sometimes your comments may be a little hard to take for some but people only really take offensive when the comments hit home, so keep em coming!

ELR · 06/02/2014 15:30

Forgot to say well done nearlythereyet on getting your bloods done!

ELR · 06/02/2014 15:32

I mean almostthereagain!

Dotty342kids · 06/02/2014 15:56

Nice to see you back here too ELR, did you have a nice break at CP (not been for two years now and the kids are nag, nag, nagging but can't take them out in term time anymore so don't think we'll ever go back Smile !)

BsshBossh · 06/02/2014 15:57

ELR here is an online version of Roden's chicken, lemon & olives tagine. I generally make it after Sunday roast, with leftover roast chicken diced. I use zest and juice of one lemon instead of preserved lemon. I add chicken stick too (either store bought cube or homemade). I serve it over brown Basmati. Literally takes no time at all to make.

ELR · 06/02/2014 16:13

Thanks bsshh I googled and that's the recipe I game up with so I was on the right track! You should join the recipe cook book thread this month we are doing claudia Roden and Rachel Allen

Megrim · 06/02/2014 16:15

zed just spoke to my mum, she says she started on one 500 mg capsule per day, but after 10 days her skin became very itchy, so she dropped to one 200 mg capsule per day (and took an occasional 500 mg capsule instead to use them up). She took these for about 6 weeks, and it cleared completely. She does say that it doesn't work for everyone, and that you just need to be a bit careful if you're taking any other medication.

ELR · 06/02/2014 16:16

dotty yes had a good time we only went for a weekend break, took kids out for fri and mon but had it authorised by the head as their attendance is over 98.8% he had no problem with it.

zedzedzed · 06/02/2014 16:24

Brilliant meg I think I'll give it a go at the high dose and see how I go as I'm getting pretty sick of it now, even if I do get slim enough to wear a smaller than last years giant preggo maxi dress this Summer, my arms are so plague-y it'll be a no go! Thanks

ernesttheBavarian · 06/02/2014 16:29

D, my dh developed psoriasis. Angry red blobs allo ver his legs. Dermatologist prescribed light therapy. He had to go to local hospital and be zapped twice a week or so. It cleared it up really quickly. Months later it started to return so he bought a light therapy device to use at home and when it flares up he just zaps the patch for 20 secs or so and it works really well for him. Dunno if you have tried light treatment. I will look into getting royal jelly for him too.

Got a message saying he was taken ill at work and the company doctor came down to him and he's been sent home. Ds sent a message to say he's asleep. Hope he's ok.

Feel faintly sick after ice cream and some toffee. Going to have some lovely curry and rice soon. Yum.

Megrim · 06/02/2014 16:40

Psoriasis is really tricky to treat, what works for some doesn't work for other. Light therapy did nothing for my mum, coal tar (how I loathe that smell - the house always reeked of the stuff when I was little) also did very little. Think you have to just keep trying different things until you fight the right one or right combination. I get it very occasionally, but it's stress related for me.

ernesttheBavarian · 06/02/2014 16:56

Quick question. Sorry it's been done probably a million times but I'm still not sure.

Ok. I have had 2 fast days this week. Today despite toffee then curry and rice I won't be anywhere near my TDEE. Is this ok (better weight loss) or knacker it all up?

BigChocFrenzy · 06/02/2014 17:12

Ernest Going far below TDEE just for a day won't burt; you may have in effect added a mini-FD. If you find it happening often, then plan your NFD meals a bit more.

Eatriskier So Angry about them cocking up your test results.
Totally unprofessional and so frustrating for you, when you went to the trouble of having the blood(y) tests.

Do let us know what happens.

Fairy Squatting with a hefty bloke on your back.

Right, you are true hard core and belong on the exercise thread, so you don't frighten the horses and non-exercisers.

zedzedzed · 06/02/2014 17:25

Thanks ernest yes I've read up on that in the past, and mine used to get better in the sunlight, (but not last year), sadly waiting lists to get referred to dermatologist are loooong and it takes many appointments to get a treatment that works for you, and I can't shell out for the at home kit on the off-chance!

As my type of psoriasis, guttate, is an overproduction of skin cells (a month to make for new cells for most people, a couple of days for us poor itchies) any scarring you have (like from my preggo plague-rash) is particularly hard to shift as it keeps trying to 'heal' itself.

I'll give the royal jelly a go as I've not tried it yet, and in combo with my horrid steroid cream, to heal the open scabs (sorry if you're eating) maybe it'll work for me...this time.

Have weighed out my portion of FD spiced lentils and had enough for a fennel sausage cut up in it, yay. Roll on 7pm.

COME ON FD PEEPS NEARLY THERE!
DRINK UP
STAY BUSY
AVOID KID FOOD

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/02/2014 17:38

Eat what a nightmare for you. I had similar happen back last spring when I was having a blood glucose test done. Rang for the results and they hadn't put the blood in the right phial so the full blood count and something else had been done, but not the glucose. I was having awful health anxiety at the time and it just about tipped me over the edge. I'm ashamed to say that I ranted horribly at the receptionist and the nurse Blush When they re-did the test all was fine...
Hope they don't need to redo yours Angry

zed fennel sausages? Yum, where are they from?

FD going well. I had a slice of cheese and a small handful of grapes earlier, dinner will be ready in about 20 minutes. Have found today pretty easy - looking forward to gin and tonic and salmon with white sauce and greens tomorrow though!

Eatriskier · 06/02/2014 17:50

Well, turns out they didn't take the test. They took the full blood count, liver function and fasting glucose but not the one I really needed. Am now awaiting for Dr to come into surgery and reissue the form so I can go down again. I didn't lose it - must be too tired as that's usually my stressed MO (Wink ali). Though it was fairly apparent last week when I saw the Dr that the result was missing so it could have been sorted last week. Just wish I didn't have to spend a load more time with a giant lump on my neck unable to swallow.

I'm very low calorie-ing today, not on purpose but there's only so much you can have when it hurts to drink. Though I managed to get hold of some yummy food for tomorrow that won't require too much chewing so should swallow easily and isn't soup.

ernesttheBavarian · 06/02/2014 17:53

Thanks bc for clearing that up. now it's finally clear. Do you go into this 'starvation mode' iff too few calls on too many NFD? It's just cos I'm away from home. We don't have any food here other than what I bought today and dd was so tired I couldn't take her into a supermarket.

You poor things suffering all this health (service) problems. That's so shit. I hope you get your results quickly. My mum had this just before Christmas. She had to wait ages for apps in the 1st place then another ages for the results. I felt so angry and frustrated on her behalf. It makes me so grateful for the brilliant service we have. ESP when my fil had a stroke while visiting us last year. Beyond amazing.

Hope you all get sorted xxx

tiggermummy70 · 06/02/2014 17:57

my mum had psoriasis over 90% of her body.

I also gag at the smell of coal tar.

the only thing that worked for her was embrel injections. It was amazing three months after starting she actually wore a short sleeved top, something I'd never seen throughout my childhood.
It works by lowering your immune system as they have found out that psoriasis is an autoimmune issue. she had to stop whilst on chemo. If you go on it you do have to be extra careful if ill. Go to docs for reassurance aftwe 2-3 days rather than 4-5 as higher chance of needing extra meds. Might be worth asking doc about for some more info.

zedzedzed · 06/02/2014 18:00

Oh Eat that sounds so miserable. I so hope they get this sorted out for you...VERY soon. Much less pain involved in my tests, but I think if I'd had to re-do all my preggo tests because of incompetence (bloods, GD glucose fasting, more bloods, pee, internals, Group B, collapsed veins etc etc) I may have eaten the receptionist! You are very good.

alibab yes, my latest obsession, Tesco Finest honey and fennel pork sausages. I'm not a fan of gourmet sausages, venison and peach or whatever muck as I truly prefer cheap plain pork (!) but these are great to add to lots of dishes and I'm obsessed with fennel at the mo.
