The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Golly, lots of poorly people.
Another really strong vote for NOT fasting, but, I can strongly recommend soup and lots of it : nice smooth ones like butternut or carrot - so easy to swallow but warm and filling and full of the nutrients that you need to get well.
And the up side is that even if you have tea and yoghurt ( great for sore throats ) for breakfast, soup for lunch and then an omelette for supper
its still not many calories, but you'll feel warmer and be hydrated and fed.

Hopped on the scales today : spot on target weight, but above leeway weight. But the weather is crap so eating less to get back to leeway weight will have to defer. Time for more tea methinks.

fairypangolin · 06/02/2014 12:47

bigchoc thanks - I have had a look at your exercise thread and it is very informative, I'll post my questions there. Pre-preg I could also do squats with my 6'2" 13 stone husband on my back but I am not doing that again for a while (mindful of my pelvic floor.) I must say your photographs are inspiring, you are in amazing shape!

I'm on a FD today but was woken up by DC at 6am and felt ravenous. Not a good start! However, I made it until noon before eating and then have just had porridge with blueberries and feel quite full. Watched the Michael Mosley Horizon programme again for inspiration. Baby and I also did some floor exercises - she did 'head up at 90 degrees on tummy' while I did crunches and then we both tried a plank.

This weather only makes me want to eat toast with butter and marmalade but hopefully I will make it through the afternoon. I have kept to each FD so far although I am allowing myself 700-800 cals since I am breastfeeding. I am not terribly strict either, so don't count milk in tea etc. However, I avoid alcohol and sweets on NFD during the week to counteract Fri and Sat eve vino. I imagine that my body is inclined to lose weight at the moment anyway since it is preg weight and I am BFing, but this is really helping it to move along. My main inspiration is that I am going back to work by end of May and I absolutely refuse to buy new work clothes in my current size.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/02/2014 13:02

Hello all - FD going ok so far - two black coffees, lots of water. Haven't been able to get buttermint tea but bought some camomile and maple in ASDA today - quite pleasant. Also got some diet coke to cheer myself up this afternoon. Planning to have the butternut squash and chorizo thing tonight over some cavalero nero.

Peplum - Craghoppers make good walking trousers, fortunately for me in different lengths. Hawksheads own brand are good too.

jenniferlawrence · 06/02/2014 13:07

Hello

I'm on my 6th fast day on 5:2 today. Breakfast was a cup of decaf tea with a splash of skimmed milk, lunch is an electrolyte drink and after work I'm having celery and spinach soup and courgetti fastonara with a bit of steamed salmon. Can't wait. Might have enough calories for a banana and/or crisp bread before bed.

The thing I'm finding hardest at the moment isn't the hunger on a FD, it's feeling ravenous on a NFD. Anyone got any tips for avoiding over eating on NFD?

TalkinPeace · 06/02/2014 13:17

Anyone got any tips for avoiding over eating on NFD?
drink lots
Seriously. You are probably dehydrated from the fast so start the day with a mug of tea, a glass of milk and a pint of water.
Then go for high protein high veg foods - beans, omelettes, salad with cheese and cold meats or fish, and big drinks of water.
Try to stave off carbs and sugar into as late in the day as you can
the weekend ideally for sugar Grin

Emmabryant123 · 06/02/2014 13:26

Emmabryant123 · 06/02/2014 13:27

Chocolate coated corn flake cakes with mini eggs on top
Now only liquids until tomorrow 2pm when I'm home from work

zedzedzed · 06/02/2014 13:32

jen I'm newish but I find NFDs go best for me when I log EVERYTHING and plan my meals in advance.

It's really dull, but the calorie count at the end of each day is a mental and physical education both about portion sizes and about how satisfying fat is...yes it's amazing how many veg you can eat and stay within your tdee, but it's equally amazing how much more satisfying they taste along with small portions of proper non-diet foods like oily fish, pate, eggs, meat, cheese, butter, oil and other 'treats' like creamy fools, yoghurts and mousses.
So I don't skimp on the tasty, natural fat on an NFD, I just plan it, measure it, count it and I don't waste calories on diet crap or bulky carbs.

I also 'allow' myself to skip meals now if I'm just not hungry yet or to save up for something really yummy in the evening/at the weekend/with booze; don't eat just because it's breakfast 'time'.

And since I started this woe, knowing I can have some cake or some fish and chips or fried rice if I really want....my bingeing has so far disappeared, which is feckin amAzing!

almostthereagain · 06/02/2014 13:33

So much illness aroundSad Get well soon to all & betsy I missed your poorly post yesterday, you're always so cheerful you should be the last person to apologise for a moan!
No idea what shape I am, can never work it out from those funny picture charts but interesting how varied weights/sizes TDEEs are. I am as of this am 9.6, 5'4, TDEE 1500 & my BMI is high 22's I believe. My target weight seems to be from 8.10 but I am aiming for stabilising around 9.3. I am size 10 top & 10 or 12 bottom. Bottoms seem tight around my hips/ loose around small of back yet I wouldn't say I have particularly big hips or a tiny waistConfused
V exciting moving into your new house zed & enjoy your wedding plans, gah! sorry forgotten who posted but remember fondly all that excitementSmile
Trying to fast today but it feels a struggle, not helping that I'm bakingHmm

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 06/02/2014 13:36

Not been on these threads for months but I'm still here, 5:2 ing away. I reckon I lost just under 2 stone between April and xmas. I didn't fast over xmas but any weight I put on i shifted with my first week in Jan (and I did 4:3, the week before xmas. Surprisingly ok).

I could lose weight more quickly but for me, this works, even if it takes me 4 years to lose another 6 stone. And it's the first diet, oops wol, in my 40 years that has worked.

Yes, it's frustrating when slimming world friends say, I've lost 2 st in months or whatever. i did that 10 years ago and put it all back on and more.

I shall do this until I reach my goal then stick to 6:1 forever.

I find exercise quite easy on a FD. I generally swim about 22 lengths in my lunch hr (in 30mins) and do that instead of lunch. I don't eat or drink anything but water until 5pm. Last night I had a big plate of raw tripe with salt and vinegar from the butchers. Blame DM - she got me into it as a child. Packed full of vits and less than 200 cals.

Hopefully my weight loss will increase as I've just signed up to cycle about 350km across Tanzania in 5 days in Oct 2015 in aid of breast, ovarian and cervical cancer charities.
Eek!!! Not ridden a bike in 10yrs. Need to get training!!!

zedzedzed · 06/02/2014 13:45

Sorry...but mrsA you just made me boke! Raw trip...shudder! Mind you, I like steak tartar so who am I to boke!

zedzedzed · 06/02/2014 13:45

*raw tripe

BsshBossh · 06/02/2014 13:47

Lovely update MrsArch. Terrific attitude!

BsshBossh · 06/02/2014 13:48

Not sure about the raw tripe though :)

Dotty342kids · 06/02/2014 13:56

Me neither re. the raw tripe but hey, whatever works for you on a FD MrsArch Smile

Curry out with friends tonight. Can't wait!

jenniferlawrence · 06/02/2014 14:04

Thanks for the tips. I think I need a good, filling breakfast in the morning. Also avoiding carbs might help.

Is it very wrong for me to eat leftover steamed salmon for breakfast? I bloody love salmon.

TalkinPeace · 06/02/2014 14:11

jennifer
thats a REALLY GOOD breakfast food : protein and oils.,

BigChocFrenzy · 06/02/2014 14:23

I usually skip breakfast, but if I feel hungry, then I have say sardines or scrambled egg on wholegrain toast with tomato.
If I'm greedy it's brunch, I have cheese fondue with toasted wholegrain pita bread and apple slices.

OP posts:
zedzedzed · 06/02/2014 14:23

Protein for brekkie...YES!
NOTHING is wrong here, if it helps you to fast or it helps you to stay within your TDEE and lose flab then it's mostly fine I reckon eh?

The rest is about personal choice and the health benefits of certain nutritional or lifestyle choices (ready meals, caffeine, fags, diet drinks, salt etc may all be dodgy lifestyle choices but they don't show up on MFP...but I think the point is that once you start making healthy choices with your food, the rest may follow as you'll want to look after yourself and your new bod; since starting 5:2 I have applied my psoriasis cream every day, strange but true).

BigChocFrenzy · 06/02/2014 14:25

A moderate amount of wholegrain toast with a lot of topping fills me up, rather than making me hungry. However, one could substitute salad for it.

OP posts:
diabolo · 06/02/2014 14:29

NFD for me and I've just had 2 fried egg sandwiches! Bloody gorgeous, but with a healthy sardine, olive and whole wheat pasta supper planned for tonight (just over 500 cals), should still come in well under my TDEE.

Another FD tomorrow and a meal out on Saturday.

Well done everyone.

Eatriskier · 06/02/2014 14:31

GAH!!!!! My test results aren't in and the woman who deals with them suspects there has been a cock up somewhere and is leaning on they didn't take the effing test. She's chasing for me but I'm screwed getting another test done until next week unless they find out in the next 30 mins. In the meantime they can't treat me as they don't know if that is the issue. And I have two DC to look after in this state (woe is me I know, all the other ill peeps here have DC to look after too but its irritating to wait 2 weeks to find out you may have to wait another one at least so there's no respite)

BsshBossh · 06/02/2014 14:43

Angry on your behalf Eat. How bloody annoying!

Megrim · 06/02/2014 14:57

zed have you tried royal jelly for psoriasis? My mum suffered badly from ankle to knee for 30 years, she tried royal jelly (had to try different doses) and it cleared completely within about 6 weeks, and has not returned. I know psoriasis is really difficult to treat, but royal jelly might be worth a shot?

Peplum41 · 06/02/2014 15:02

That's very disappointing eats. All I can do is tut on your behalf. And maybe grrr a little.

zed are you moving in this weekend? How exciting.

errol I cant seem to find Buttermint tea, yet it used to be readily available. Twinings you're missing out here! The chamomile and maple one is nice, vaguely sweet when that's what you're after.

mrsA you must be from up north if you like tripe. All the old lasses round here love it, refreshing they tell me and start reminiscing about cow heels and pigs trotters while I look aghast.
