The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

DORIS

YAY! Very good doll!

If we were all ever in the same room we'd need a dance to go with it...and matching costumes...where you wip off the fat skirts to reaveal a skinny skirt...or something.

BY THE WAY To anyone skimming, you must go back and find the bit of the thread from this morning where BCF talks about wanking and chocolate and the comparative issues surrounding the privacy of these two said pastimes.

(Strange invented 'use by' dish of the week: 'NFD Flabby Thighs for Three' 6 skinless boneless flattened chicken thighs stuffed with a goo made of 125g goats cheese, 30g chopped dried apricot, garlic, honey, chilli and balsamic glaze, wrapped in parma ham served with a giant dressed rocket and tomato salad and 120g of spiced potato wedges...740cals of YUM!!)

mscnile · 05/02/2014 20:26

Weight/height/size is a funny thing isn't it? I'm just under 11st, 5'7 and a size 12 - although clothes are getting looser. However at 13st I was only a 14, which is odd. I ordered some dresses in the sale they arrived today and none of them look nice Sad which has depressed me a bit as I've been feeling quite slim recently. Maybe they just aren't nice and that why they were in the sale in the first place! I do feel a bit bloated today, but have had a good FD with just coffees and a apple until this evening, then a massive lean chicken salad, so well under 500. Ho hum.

Sorry, self indulgent whinge there!

fairypangolin · 05/02/2014 20:29

Hi - I have been lurking on this thread since mid-Dec when I started 5:2. I had my second baby in October and was not shifting the baby weight just by bfing and walking/jogging/rowing loads. I was 11 stone 4lbs then and have since lost 11lbs. I have been amazed at how easy it's been. I have never been able to stick to a diet before. I have about another stone to lose before I am at my pre-pregnancy weight, however I have been inspired by your stories to think that I may be able to aim a little lower. I am 5'3" and pear shaped but naturally quite muscular (before pregnancy I could easily do 20 proper press ups). The thinnest I have been as an adult was 8 stone 10lbs, which I loved but was sadly short lived. If I could get back to that it would be a triumph.

I cannot believe how effective this WOE is when it contradicts almost all the received wisdom about how to eat properly. I have always believed that skipping meals was impossible and would lead to binging. I have instead found my appetite diminishing to a much more sensible level but I ENJOY what I do eat so much more. I have never been tempted to sit down and eat large amounts of chocolate or crisps but even 'normal' servings of ice cream, cheese, etc i now realise just have too many calories. Now though I don't feel guilty when I eat on NFD, as long as I manage not to snack during the day.

I am really impressed with how friendly and supportive you all are on this thread. It is really very encouraging even for people like me who read much more than they post.

Coveredinweetabix · 05/02/2014 20:34

Just coming in to say hi as I haven't been around for a while. Sorry to see so many of you are unwell and wish you/your DC better. Welcome to all the new joiners. I think some of the new joiners asked whether they could eat what they wanted on a NFD as that is what the book seemed to suggest. When someone asked this question in the autumn, another poster pointed out that the authors did say that but neither of them were ,inch over their BMI in the first place so their version of eating what you like in a day is very different to someone such as me who, on hearing that phrase, polishes off biscuits, cake, chocolate & ice cream galore and has all of those items in the house so easily accessible.
It's a month since I restarted after Xmas and I have lost 8 of the 12lbs I put on over Xmas. I'd hoped for more but had a blip I late Jan when we had a late family Xmas with members of the family we hadn't been able to see then.
Aim is to be 10st4 (which would mean I was a healthy BMI) by mid March. That's 7lbs to lose in 7 weeks which should be doable if I stick to TDEE on NFD and start shredding.

fairy

Glad you've de-lurked, I think it really helps with sticking with it, I also agree with a lot you've said about this woe.

Hope to see lots more posts from you soon as you turn all skinny-minny.

DorisAllTheDay · 05/02/2014 20:48

On a roll (ha!) now.

Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate cake,
Smothered with ice cream and topped with a flake.
Secretly dreaming and longing to bake,
Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate cake.

Cinnamon, cinnamon, cinnamon buns,
Not for the bedroom - there's too many crumbs,
Eat them in company, share them with chums,
Cinnamon, cinnamon, cinnamon bu-u-uns...

The cinnamon buns verse goes with the 'middle' bit of the music for those of you who are purists about these things.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 05/02/2014 20:48

Hi, just checking in ready for FD tomorrow.

Two NFDs completed, and I have been really pleased with how easy it has been to avoid the snacks.

I may do 16:8 and aim for about 1000 cals tomorrow instead of a full fast, depends whether this cold virus has gone or not. I have made the mistake in the past of trying to fast when I've been unwell and I always end up bingeing on loads of crap and going over TDEE.

bishbosch I am only a few cms taller than you (5'2.5"), my TDEE at the moment is just over 2100. I too carry a lot of weight in my thighs and bottom, most of it muscle, so if I was 11 stone then I would be a 12. I have very broad hips, and a big ribcage - 10.5 stone is my perfect weight which I think leaves my BMI slightly over 25, but it is healthy for me.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/02/2014 20:49

The cauli rice worked well - I briefly sautéed it at the end in a bit of butter, went well under the caramelised apple sauce. With some carrots and broccoli, ~400cals for a good dinner. So I shall have a muller corner yog in a minute too. Smile

fairypangolin · 05/02/2014 20:56

zedzedzed - thanks and congrats on the size 16 jeans by the way. As a pear, jeans are the bane of my existence. I long to one day put on a pair and not only see my dumpy big thighs.

bishboschone · 05/02/2014 21:06

I actually have quite small hips but carry my weight there with a round bum . I have a small rib cage but big boobs .. I was shaped a bit like Cheryl cole as a teenager .. Slim but curvy with muscly legs but i was still fairly heavy then ( prob 7.10/8 stone ) .. Shame I thought I was fat !!!!!!!

Peplum41 · 05/02/2014 21:16

Still here, ironing not tempting enough.

Hi fairyp yes friendly bunch here. I like jeans, but theyre the first item of clothing to tell it like it is when you put weight on. A bit like my mother! Not like leggings which pretend you look nice then bitch about your fat arse when your backs turned.

ali I often tell myself I'm just going to 16:8 then do a full fast, as I think the first 16 hours are the hardest. Well atleast between 12 to 16 hrs. Then I'm ok.

zedzedzed · 05/02/2014 22:31

Peplum you are a gem: I like jeans, but they're the first item of clothing to tell it like it is when you put weight on. A bit like my mother! Not like leggings which pretend you look nice then bitch about your fat arse when your backs turned

Hahahahahaha!

Kitchen well and truly closed so there need be no cooking tomorrow as it's a FD: skinny dinner of spiced cardamom/fennel/cumin/lentil and sweet potato mush made (put aside less spicy version for the baby...feel very smug looking at the dozens of tiny wee pots lined up ready for the freezer alongside some spur-of-the-moment brown and bruised nectarine, pear, apple and cinnamon mush in camp pink tubs)

I like to get all my teas out of the cupboard the night before a FD and line them up, as a signal to my future morning self; no toast, only tea.

I bet you all have some FD routines/preparations/superstitions?

hopefulgum · 05/02/2014 22:49

It is a FD for me and I've got the full-on tummy grumbles this morning. I had an idea it might be a bit of a challenge when I went to bed feeling hungry last night (despite eating my TDEE). Actually I was very hungry after work yesterday to the point where I felt a bit sick, and it wasn't passing, so had a piece of toast. I put it down to my cycle - it's a week before AF is due. So I hope I can get through today without the hunger nausea that I sometimes get. I will keep on hydrating...

Which can be a bit annoying as I am in the classroom all day and always busting for a wee! My classroom is miles away from the ladies, so I have to do quick dashes between classes.

Now I have to go and make pancakes for DS's breakfast. Oh woe is me! This will be a wee bit challenging.Grin

DorisAllTheDay · 05/02/2014 23:06

Morning, hopeful, and good luck with your FD. Poor you, working miles from the nearest loo. Must make the hydration tricky! And making pancakes as well. That's what I call giving yourself an extra challenge...

I am very pleased because I've been massively hungry for the last three hours or so, but haven't succumbed and it's just about bedtime, so today's NFD is coming in exactly on budget. I've felt hungrier this evening than most FD evenings. Tomorrow's another NFD, and I'm going to try putting off eating for as long as possible, see whether that makes a difference.

Loving the trouser analogies, peplum. A good discovery for me has been walking trousers which are hugely forgiving. Are they the Nelson Mandela of the trouser world? Nah, doesn't really work. Can you think of a better comparison? Whatever, they are fab - they're comfy for a long walk to and from work, but smart enough to wear during the day as well, and the winter versions are lined and lovely and cosy. You'd think I was on commission, wouldn't you?

Quick check in here...

5:2 and exercise has gone out the window. I have been eating all the wrong things. I am so ill. I cannot swallow without wincing. Ouch. I have a horrible taste in my mouth. I'm pretty sure I have tonsillitis and DD1 is the same. DD2's rash on her face has turned to blisters which are beginning to crust over. She seems to be on the road to recovery and has stopped vomiting. DD1 was sick after dinner, though. Hoping it was a fluke, as she is easily sick, and not the bug. Today is the 9th day of illness in this house! I am never sick, which is a good thing as I'm a terrible patient and my DH an even worse carer.

Supposed to be a FD tomorrow, which I don't think I'll manage, but I should at least try to stick to my TDEE to stem the damage. I've hardly eaten today, but what I have eaten, has been compete junk. I have some green veg. soup in the slow cooker though, so will have that to fall back on.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/02/2014 23:24

Doris - oh, yes, walking trousers are great, they are made on the assumption that people have thighs and calves! And they can be slung in the wash and don't need ironing. My only problem with them is that my dog expresses his love for me by chewing hard bits off any clothes of mine he can get hold of - so if I'm foolish enough to leave fleeces or walking trousers on a chair he destroys the zips of the former and the buttons of the latter. Jeans have the unique advantage of riveted metal buttons - he dents them but has to give up! Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 05/02/2014 23:29

Oh Mazzle, that sounds grim - a horrid taste in the mouth could well signal tonsillitis. Hope you all get better soon. Meanwhile, soup sounds like a good idea and maybe if you can get some good ice-cream that would slide down easily (or freeze some bananas and whizz in a food processor with nutella or choc spread)

BigChocFrenzy · 06/02/2014 01:13

Mazzle Sounds rotten for you all. Hope you and DDs soon feel better.

We've posted this a few times but it's important:
Do NOT fast when ill
Your bod needs more nutrients. Fasting can slow your recovery and make you feel worse.

Up at 4 am after not a lot of sleep Meh. Dd hacking her lungs out. I have the cluster headache from hell, all my joints ache especially my dodgy si one, throat on fire, can't swallow, sweating like a pig despite the heating being off, numbness all the way down my arms and in my feet. Problem is I don't know what of this is possible thyroid related, what is low b12 related and whether I have an illness. Needless to say this is the worst I've been at the end of a b12 cycle since I started 5:2. Otc cocodamol only doing so much.

So definitely no exercising today Sad and I won't purposely fast bigchoc. Having said that the concept of swallowing anything has me in tears. Sad

DorisAllTheDay · 06/02/2014 06:13

(((( Mazzle )))) and (((( Eatriskier )))) - take care of yourselves, and no fasting. Thanks Thanks for you and DCs.

Grrrr. Meant to fast till at least 12 today to get my NFD off to a good start. But I woke early and desperate for toast. I succumbed. It's going to be a long day...

Eatriskier · 06/02/2014 06:55

Bless dh. He got up and raided my hidden stash of drugs for me and found some prescription cocodamol. That should help later as well as meaning I don't need to get my but down to the drs

positively9something · 06/02/2014 07:14

Morning all well I didn't fast on Monday or last Thursday as I've been fed up of it and wondering what to do. Yesterday I hardly had any real food and eat loads of rubbish and chocolate and I woke up this morning with a real belly ache although it is also totm. I think I might fast today to give my body a rest.

I'm really feeling deflated with myself at the moment and concerned I might just put on all the weight I lost Confused

MelanieCheeks · 06/02/2014 07:39

Giggling at the speak-the-truth jeans, bitchy leggings and Nelson Mandela trousers.....

I did Mon-Wed this week, which has worked surprisingly well. Busy busy days are the answer to easy FDs, though I did succumb to a choc chip bisucit during a session of interviewing yesterday evening. Only a touch over 500 cals though.
