The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Ew bigchoc please don't use the "w" word in the same sentence as chocolate. You nearly put me off me creme egg!

Hi Dotty ! Nearly at the yearly report stage myself. You and me we are so similar, but I'm 41 and 5' 3 . I'm puzzled though as despite that extra inch in height, I'm 11 stone and still a bit big for size 14 yet you're a 12 at 10 6. I reckon I need to be sub 10 to be a 12. What were you at 11, if you can remember? Anyway, hope your fast goes well today.

doris I'm another that can't believe that so many struggle to eat their TDEE! What is wrong with these people! Or what is wrong with us??

On another note, there is a new chewing gum I've discovered that's called bubble-mint, its bubblegum flavoured and yes its got sweeteners in etc etc but it kills hunger pains stone dead and gets rid of that yukky fast day taste in your mouth. Love it.

BsshBossh · 05/02/2014 17:05

zedzed I don't think you need a third FD a week even if it's a normal evening meal. You seem to be losing well on simple 5:2. I'd resort to your proposed plan only if you stop losing. That way you have a back up plan. My personal opinion anyway...

HandMini · 05/02/2014 17:05

Errol - grate your cauli on a normal grater. Better still whizz it in a food processor. Put it in a bowl. Microwave it on high. Don't add water. I do mine for 1.5 minutes. You may need longer if your microwave is less powerful.

THEN, if you have extra calories to spare, toss it all in a frying pan with some oil and break an egg over and break up the egg as you cook it, to make it egg fried rice.

I never have enough cals left for the egg fried bit, so I just eat mine with loads of salt and pepper. I really like it - its hot and satisfying and tastes a little bit ricey.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/02/2014 17:22

Thanks handmini - that sounds nice and easy, I'll hand grate as its just for me. My microwave is 1000W - is that 1.5 mins for a single serving? Don't want to blast it into oblivion!

The egg sounds good but not with the rest of what I'm having - pork shank in apple sauce, its an ASDA taste the difference thing, had one piece for lunch without the sauce in a WW tortilla with salad. The pork is 328 for a half pack, they've got it quite unfatty so it's a good chunk of meat.

DorisAllTheDay · 05/02/2014 17:26

Hmmm, now wondering whether I should do a 20:4 thing on my NFDs. My TDEE's 1700 and I'm really struggling to stay within it today. I'm already at 1400 so I'll be having an FD-type supper - nothing to spare.

Peplum, I'm also 5' 3" and at 11 stone I was between a 14 and a 16. When I reached my lowest weight last September/October at 9 stone I was between a 10 and a 12. Now back up to about 9 stone 9 and comfortable in 12s - they were getting tight at the start of January when I went over 10 stone. I just think everyone varies. Someone last year did an AIBU thread on what people around 5' 4" weighed, and the variety was staggering! In my case I think it's because I carry any excess weight around my middle, so it keeps me in relatively large sizes at a weight where some others might be a size down.

Fantastic work, tiredemma - enjoy your well-earned evening meal!

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 05/02/2014 17:28

Had my soup and some weetabix, on 480 calories now so done for the day really, need to make sure I don't have anything else tonight now...

BigChocFrenzy · 05/02/2014 17:30

Thx for recipe, HandMini, looks simple enough even for me to try sometime.

TiredEmma My FDs were all 8-900 the first 3 months. I just accepted I would need more time than others to get down to 500 FDs because I am so greedy exercise so intensely.
That was still a large calorie deficit. So, don't worry if 8-900 is what you can manage.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/02/2014 17:38

Doris - yes, a lot of it is about your shape - I was still in size 10 even when I was about 10 st (5'1") because I do go in in the middle - but I don't think I'll ever be able to wear skinnies, even the last pair of straight legs I tried were too tight because I've got large thighs and calves.

tiggermummy70 · 05/02/2014 17:57

I am wearing a mix now of 14/16/18.
when I was 7lbs lighter I could fit most makes of 14's but I carry my spare tire very low at the front. Angry belly button down plus I've had two c/section's. I used to be 22/24 on bottom and 24 /26 if buttons involved on top. Now tend to be 18/20.
skinny trs are not an option for me either to much cycling when younger has given me calves like tree trunks....
Flipping hungry tonight....

bishboschone · 05/02/2014 18:08

I'm 11 stone 1 and 5 foot one. I'm a size 12 .. Very hourglass but 14 is definitely too big . For whatever reason I think I'm heavy as I'm a size 10 at ten stone , size 8 at 9 stone and 8 and a half stone I'm size 6 ..my friend is the same size and a stone lighter than me.

bishboschone · 05/02/2014 18:08

I mean h and m 12 too not m and s. Tis weird .

bishboschone · 05/02/2014 18:09

9 and a half stone is perfect for me . Jut need to get back to it post ds . !

LilyJoAndMe · 05/02/2014 19:03

Hi there all. I love cauliflower rice. Often curry or bolognaise type sauces with loads of veggies in aren't overloaded in calories but then the proper rice / pasta / chapatti etc. quicky raises the calorie level and so cauliflower rice has been my solution.
Grin In short it has changed my FDs !Grin

zedzedzed · 05/02/2014 19:17

Thanks so much to all who answered re 'adding a 20hr fast on Fridays then stuffing face with 1k dinner' really interesting takes on it.

You're probably right Bssh and what's great about this woe is being 'allowed' to skip meals to save up for social events...after years of being frowned at for skipping meals and being told to graze constantly, it's very refreshing to have medical permission to regulate my intake the way skinny people probably do without thinking...or the way my kids do; they eat till they're full and not again till they're empty, which changes daily depending what they've been up to. I'm learning to eat like my baby!

Was it peplum with the bubblemint gum? YUP! I go through 7pkts a week as it's YUMMY! Oh the terrible day when my shopping was delivered with ordinary gum...gruelling.

We should add it to The Buttermint Tea Fast Day Song.

Emmabryant123 · 05/02/2014 19:33

Hmm.
Isn't it funny today was a nfd and indulgent to.
Breakfast was toast with scrambled eggs and spaghetti hoops
Lunch was a cheese and pickle sandwich
Dinner was roast chicken, peas, carrots, curly kale and roast pots and I'm not craving anything sweet at all. If I have my porridge with banana in the morning I want to eat cakes, biscuits, flapjacks all day and I binge on them. Maybe I should cut down on it and start eating more eggs/cheese/toast etc for breakfast

ernesttheBavarian · 05/02/2014 19:43

Where do you get this bubble gum mint chewing gum from?

DorisAllTheDay · 05/02/2014 20:00

Your wish is my command, Zed.

Bubblemint bubblemint bubblemint gum,
I'll eat like my baby - she'll eat like her mum.
Grazing's amazing but fasting is fun,
Bubblemint bubblemint bubblemint gum.

The link to the original is if anyone missed it.

Peplum41 · 05/02/2014 20:02

bish that is so weird that you're a size 12 at 11st but you're only 5'1. Must be nice to have curves in the right places, healthier too than my apple shape. Such a misnomer, calling it "apple" like its healthy. It should be called pie shaped.

And I can't wear skinny jeans because my legs are always a size smaller than my middle, so the jeans look really baggy.

doris how long you been doing 5:2 now? So many new started at once, I've lost track. What's your TDEE, and how much are you going over? I'm just so dim I've only recently realised I've been eating back the deficit so carefully earned on FDs. I thought I was on a plateau!

DorisAllTheDay · 05/02/2014 20:03

And here is the complete 5:2 version - so far. Please add to it!

Buttermint, buttermint, buttermint tea,
My kitchen is closed - there's no bagels for me,
Oh how I long for an N-FD,
Buttermint, buttermint, buttermint tea.

Strawberry, strawberry, strawberry pie,
An apple won't crumble and neither will I,
Ask why I'm fasting and I reply,
Strawberry, strawberry, strawberry pie-ie-ie...

Buttermint, buttermint, buttermint tea,
I'll drink you tomorrow, just wait and see.
With muffins and toast (up to TDEE),
Buttermint, buttermint, buttermint tea.

Bubblemint bubblemint bubblemint gum,
I'll eat like my baby - she'll eat like her mum.
Grazing's amazing but fasting is fun,
Bubblemint bubblemint bubblemint gum.

bishboschone · 05/02/2014 20:12

I am hourglass , I believe apples are always lighter . I used to ride a lot so have heavy thighs and bum .

Peplum41 · 05/02/2014 20:12

Ooh earnest, forgot to say hi, got carried away with my own musings as usual. I don't know what hoshimotos thyroid is but I now think I've got it. I didn't know chocolate has gluten in it? Bubblemint gum is Wrigley's, with all the other gums, I think it says ice white on the cover, its sort of pinky purple coloured packet. Yum, and really stops the hungry hungry hippo feeling.

bishboschone · 05/02/2014 20:13

I have been told I don't look 11 stone , sort of a back handed compliment Blush

Peplum41 · 05/02/2014 20:17

Tee hee doris I'm off to sing that whilst ironing.

Kitchen closed, except for water and herbal tea. Sigh.

Drools at emmas post.

DorisAllTheDay · 05/02/2014 20:18

Boy, am I jealous, Bish, of you being a size 12 at 11 stone. I think I might go into a strop at the unfairness of life! I have the same issue as you, peplum, with legs a size or two smaller than my middle. Pie shaped describes me nicely. I've only been doing 5:2 for a month (my monthiversary is this Saturday) but I was on a careful-with-food-move-more type diet for a year and a half before that and lost in the region of six stone. Only I had rather a wake-up call when I ate uncontrollably for the whole of December and put more than a stone back on - and needed to do something a bit different to get myself back on the wagon. I'm about to turn 49 and I have decades of yo-yo dieting behind me. I really don't want to go back there again, so I decided to give 5:2 a whirl. It's worked inasmuch as I'm back in control (hooray) but I'm waiting for that magical day when my appetite reduces and I no longer want to eat more than my body needs.

My TDEE is about 1700. My only exercise is walking, but I do a lot of it so I count myself as lightly active, and if I walk more than an hour and a half in a day I add on an extra 30 calories or so for each additional 10 minutes. Seems to come out about right. How much am I over? Well, I could easily eat twice my TDEE and still have room for more, so I'm trying very hard to stay within it. But I do find it hard. Some days I manage it - today I'm bang on my 1700 according to MFP so I just need to make sure I don't eat anything else before I go to bed. Tuesday I managed to come in under it. Saturday I was about 400 calories over. A couple of days last week I was probably at least 1000 over but I stopped counting. Blush It depends how much discipline I manage to exert over myself!

bishboschone · 05/02/2014 20:23

I have massive thighs though and the rest of legs are not that spesh .. Shock
