Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Feel hideous. And really pissed off with myself. Had a brilliant mon-Fri. Sat went well until I polished off 4 chocolate bars at 10pm - not the full size ones but the one up from mini's. Then today has been a joke, have eaten loads and feel fat and bloated. At work at the moment and just ate a teacake (midnight). Fasting from now on and hoping to make it to Tuesday lunchtime on fresh air (though might cave and have a homemade soup around 8pm tonight - circa 100 cals). Hope I can claw this back.

vvviola · 13/01/2014 01:07

I'm going to start tomorrow.

While I've got a fair bit of weight to lose (I'm 84kg and should be closer to 65kg), I'm mainly trying to reset my attitude to eating. I'm a grazer and a comfort/boredom eater and it's a way of eating I really don't like modelling to my DDs (although I'm a little uncomfortable about modelling fasting too - I'll probably phrase it as having a lighter day to rest my stomach - DD1 is only 6, but we have already had issues with her obsessing about the amount of vegetables she's eating because someone mentioned needing 5 a day)

It's summer here, so I should be able to eat the family meal, just without the heavy carbs and adding lots of salad.

I'm going to start with Tuesdays and Thursdays as DD2 is at creche those days so I'm more likely to be able to keep myself out of the house and away from the biscuit tinGrin

MrsFlorrick · 13/01/2014 01:28

Yikes. I can't keep up!!!
Hello new people GrinGrin welcome (waves). It's great here. Grin

I will catch up on thread.

Nightmare weekend. Every plan laid went to pot. We were supposed to have dinner with friends Saturday. Private chef and 7 course taster menu.

DDs UTI and mild kidney infection has been a nightmare. We've been back to out of hours doctor several
Times. DD has only just stopped vomiting. Sad

We've been given the wrong type of antibiotics twice. Hmm I mean they have books to look it up in, how hard can be to ensure you give a 4yo the child friendly UTI AB rather than a hardcore adult one??AngryAngry

She has barely slept since Thursday and that means I haven't either.

So no FDs since Thirsday. Which is ok as my very calorific meal didn't happen. I made sure I ate some nice cheese to make up for it. Wink

I usually have a FD on a Sunday but not today. Needed the boost of chocolate to see me through it all.

DD has had severe stomach pain from it all and this evening she just couldn't handle it anymore and had a total meltdown. Screaming and screeching and throwing herself around. Snot and tears everywhere.

I don't blame her. It's a long time to feel unwell. She is asleep now but it's a fitful sleep and she keeps moaning. I don't think it's pain but just unsettled sleep because she is so over tired.

Luckily dH has been able to look after DS and play with him so he hasn't felt neglected. Poor Boy. He knows something is very wrong and he tries to cheer DD up but she sort of rebuffs him because she just wants to be left alone. Sad

Wish me luck for tomorrow. FD and one sick child and a bored toddler. Yikes.
I'm sure by this time tomorrow I can be found rocking quietly in a corner...

Back tomorrow once I am up to speed.

Breadandwine · 13/01/2014 01:36

Hi MrsF, that sounds awful! Better have one of these! [hug]

Here's a couple more:

[hug] [hug]

Hope tomorrow's not as bad as you fear!

AussieSpirit · 13/01/2014 04:50

Hi :)

I'd love to join in please. I have a tonne of weight to lose (well not exactly a tonne but feels close to it...lol). I was doing 5:2 early last year and it was working really well for me and then I stopped. No particular reason, I just stopped. I still don't know why I did because I was feeling so much better for it. I'm going to make my fast days Tuesdays and Thursdays. This thread has inspired and excited me and I'm really looking forward to getting back to it.

Peplum41 · 13/01/2014 06:04

I haven't looked on here since tues morning.

Since then, things have taken off like a rocket, with a new thread that's nearly used up. It's taken me hours to catch up.

Hi Aussiespirit, good to have you around, keeps us night workers company. Why did you stop 5:2? Did you get fed up, and were you on here before?

angiem2 I started at 23:30, what I ate was not good, chocolate, biscuits from the tin probably covered in unspeakable germs, some fake crisps, ughh. I'm aiming to do til about 7 pm, then soup. But will need breakfast tues am though, as I've got something on that I'm moody if I've not eaten.

mummyof2girlsxx and somewhereb...rain, I read every post, but sometimes it takes ages and you forget who said what, what you liked, why you liked it etc. Don't feel ignored, its bonkers on here at the mo!

curveball hugs for poorly dad( know that's not quite right, apology).

Eeh to little missflorrick, which is an affectionate Lancashire term. poor chick.

Pat on head for toffee's boycat, and mcniles puppy.

To all the newbies, hi, take your time no rush. By the way, I haven't lost much more than a pound since September, but I've still lost inches. I've lost two stone in all with 5:2, in 11 months, two to go. This thread really helps, its motivating and you pick up tips. Plus, you get reminders to clench your pelvic floor, drink water and take tablets

bsshbossh looking fab, surely you're at goal though? You look nice in your before photo!

Right, that's me unloaded, supposed to be working. Probably won't see you til the next thread..til then.

Peplum41 · 13/01/2014 06:33

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, didn't fast last week as was taking antibiotics that needed to be taken with food, and once I've eaten I can't fast as I have to keep eating.

I lost control totally, every day was well over TDEE. It was like my life before 5:2, nibble here, nibble there. Plus, it was totm which I feel makes me more snacky. I did feel a bit panicky at one point, but all my clothes still fit, and I'm back on the safety net of the 5:2 wagon. I've taken the battery out of my scales, will leave it for a couple of weeks, I hate scales making me feel bad for no reason. Been doing this long enough to know that last week was just a blip.

positively9something · 13/01/2014 07:10

Hi all fast day today, I did try to fast last week but I think I went out both days still under 800cals though.

I also was going over tdee probably everyday Hmm let's hope this week will be better.

Good luck to all fasters today.

RavenousRunner · 13/01/2014 07:11

Morning all and hello Monday FD! Which I need as I'm three pounds heavier than Saturday morning - salt fest all weekend, though not actually that bad calorie wise. So today should sort it (bless you, 5:2).

You've inspired me to try not eating til dinner for the first time, I usually split calories into 2-3 tiny meals. But as I don't know what's for dinner I can't plan ahead, so I think it's best to save up and then just eat a small portion of whatever DH has concocted.

Now must leave kitchen as the bread I made yesterday is screaming 'EAT ME BEFORE I GO STALE!'.

AngieM2 · 13/01/2014 07:14

Thanks peplum I'm in the swing now. 7 hours in and will be in bed by 08.30. Just need to resist the arrival of the patient toast before I go home! I'm not having brekkie in the morning as I'm going to body pump so I can wait til lunch time. God help me.

Jobyloo · 13/01/2014 07:54

Morning all. FD here too. Was supposed to be doing Tues & Thurs this week but my lunch date today has had to rearrange for later this week. This is the fab thing about 5:2, loving the flexibility. Am going to go for a 4 mile walk today and also try some of the fast exercise from MM's book as weel. Hope you all have a great day whether you're fasting or not fasting.

Mrs F really hope your daughter's feeling better today, I feel for you, it's soooo hard when they're poorly and you're sleep deprived.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/01/2014 07:56

Morning all Smile

Thank you for the tablets reminder. Going to do that right now.

Tablets taken.

Flowers and Brew for MrsF. Hope your DD feels better very soon.

I am up 0.2lbs and 5lbs up since my lowest. Today I am fasting. I will do it. I am going to do it. I have lots of housework and washing to do so will keep busy. I hate myself at the moment as I can see the weight that has gone back on so I look horrible.

New week. New day. Hopefully new me too very soon. I just feel so anxious all the time at the moment and it is annoying.

Good luck to all the fasters and enjoy to all the eaters. Grin.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/01/2014 07:59

I am also going to do something on the Wii. Posting so I don't forget and no idea what to do so any suggestions would be great. Thank you.

postmanpatscat · 13/01/2014 08:03

Morning all!

FD for me too, will try to catch up with you lot at lunchtime.

MrsF hope DD is soon better. Glad Mr F made himself useful.

Toffee keep smiling! Have you got Wii Fit?

zedzedzed · 13/01/2014 08:03

Hi hopeful glad you watched the programme from my link again, it's good to re-focus on the health-side sometimes as the weight-loss and numbers can become too important sometimes.

Having said that...I AM counting on NFDs just now, but that's mostly to re-educate myself about calories and portions and because my TDEE is very high and I'm a bit scared of it! I'm hoping/assuming it'll all become 2nd nature and by eye after a while.

Despite the counting I'm doing, I feel very freed and excited by this woe as I don't feel binge-y on NFDs, far from it, I'm re-discovering my love of good food (not shovelling carbs mindlessly). I've been pleasantly surprised by how much I can guiltlessly eat on NFDs, and, so far, FDs are a doddle as not eating has always been easier for me than making healthy choices.

Best of all my OH has decided to give this a go, which is wonderfully surprising and reassuring as he has some health worries that worried us both in terms of the longterm

zedzedzed · 13/01/2014 08:14

Mrs F your poor girl...it's awful that they gave her the wrong antibiotic! Her poor wee system must've gotten such a shock. Hopefully with the right meds and some rest and duvet time with her Mummy all will begin to settle down and heal. Maybe you could find some old Disney movies to keep toddler amused while she curls up with you...boys are tricky though, mine's a juggernaut and will NOT sit still, preferring to bounce off the walls. Yeah...you're screwed...well, then good luck with the manic rocking.

Oh and clench or in my case squat though I've forgotten who that's for!

Eatriskier · 13/01/2014 08:21

waves at newcomers hello, we move a little fast here but you'll get some good advice and a warm embrace none the less.

Well done to everyone with SVs and NSVs and LSVs.

MrsF your poor dd. shame about the meal (but at least you got some cheese Wink)

re: counting on NFD. Its just not the same as counting in a calorie restricted diet. Its a really useful tool to learn more about portioning and what is and isn't good for you calorie wise. And even with a low TDEE you can still fit a lot in when you aren't knocking 25% off constantly. There's no need to do it, but I would suggest everyone starting out does it for a week or two as you may be surprised.

re: homemade food and calories. MFP has a very handy recipe section where you can bung all the ingredients in and say how many portions have come out and its all worked out for you. Even if you go rough with the amounts it will give you a good idea.

3.5 mile run and 4 mile cycle all before 7am this morning. Just about to tuck into my first coffee and give DS his brekkie. Good luck today's fellow fasters.

Southeastdweller · 13/01/2014 08:21

Mrsf Much appreciation from me if you can manage to fast today of all days. Hope your daughter gets better soon and that you all manage to get some decent kip tonight.

somewherebecomingrain · 13/01/2014 08:30

Morning all.

Mrs F, hope your daughter is feeling better this morning, and you both get a chance for some much needed rest.

So third FD today. Where has the weekend gone???

Didn't go as much off the rails over the weekend on my NFDs as I was worried about - even managed to lose another pound. I'm putting this down to a half hour doing just dance on the wii yesterday, as there is no other justification for it.

I also managed to recruit two new 5:2ers - my dh and my best mate, so feel I am doing my bit to spread the word Smile

Hope everyone has a good day!!

BetsyBell · 13/01/2014 08:51

Indeed errol - Have a great day everyone and happy fasting Monday fasters! I've had a great but knackering weekend so I suspect caffeine will be my best buddy today Grin

Dotty342kids · 13/01/2014 09:14

Morning all, just checking in for Monday fast day Smile. Just finished prepping veggie chilli for tonight's dinner, to have with small amount of brown rice so don't need to go near the kitchen again until it's time for that at about 6.30pm.
DH decided to make a roast dinner, millionaires shortbread for the biscuit tin, AND a baked Alaska for pudding yesterday so dread to think what calorie intake was Shock. Thank goodness for Monday Fast Days!

Funny NSV this weekend. Was in need of new sports wear as my current stuff is on its last legs. In the horror of a sports direct shop I couldn't try anything on so just bought it and crossed fingers. The leggings which I thought would be relatively loose turn out to be skin tight and the t shirts are also quite "fitted". One year ago, pre 5:2 that would have all been the stuff of nightmares but when I tried it on at home, it's actually all ok! The lycra helps to hold the wobbly bits together but there is much, much less "squodge" going on and I can look at myself in the mirror and say "ok, that's not bad" as opposed to "OMG, I hate that" Grin
Funny how, even a year in, the results sneak up on you and help to keep you motivated.
