Fasting / 5:2 diet

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

It turns out I've lost an inch off my mummy tummy

Food today was

Kabu noodles lunch

2 pints of water

1 small bite of banana

Tin of tommy soup with 100g of borlotti beans which was lovely

Anyone got any great hints on breakfasts ?

curveballs · 14/01/2014 18:21

Zed - sentence made me smile too. Sums me up perfectly, hence my need to lose 5 stone Wink

curveballs · 14/01/2014 18:23

Well saying 'need to lose 5 stone' out loud sounds like a mountain. Think I may refer to it pounds from now on lol Confused

Gluezilla · 14/01/2014 18:24

Thanks Toffee
I have managed really well today - I have drunk gallons and weed gallonsGrin
I have also done lots of cleaning and feel quite energised- I think looking forward to what Im having tomorrow is helping !

Tomorrow Im having scrambled egg on wholemeal toast for breakfast , a small roast dinner left over from what I cooked for everyone else tonight for lunch with a pot of grapes and strawberries and then soup when I get home.
I do quite a physically active job so Im hoping I will lose.

BsshBossh · 14/01/2014 18:25

You newcomers are doing so well with your FDs and I'm really enjoying reading your FD observations :)

curveballs · 14/01/2014 18:25

Well done bumbumbs Grin
What are kabu noodles?

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 14/01/2014 18:29

Told you you could do it Gluezilla!

I find that baking keeps me out of the fridge and cupboards and the kids love the results. I do it on FD too which is crazy but helps.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 14/01/2014 18:30

Keeping busy is the point I was trying to make.

nouvellevag · 14/01/2014 18:32

Oof. I dunno if PMS week was the right week to start this. I've found the fast day really tough. Was breezing through at one point this afternoon, cleaning the house and feeling fine, but now I just feel cold and sad and achy. V impressed by all you fasters who are doing this without complaining!

My plan for the day will bring me in at 456 calories, so I have a tiny bit spare, and I'm on track with a bowl of soup to go, but I'd kill for some fat and protein. :( DD's having cheesy beans for supper and I almost wept getting it ready for her. I might go 50 cals over and either have a soup with some chicken and beans in it or plop a spoonful of creme fraiche into the soup I was meant to be having.

zedzedzed · 14/01/2014 18:35

FD yesterday came in under 500 again, all in my evening meal at 8pm. Went brilliantly except for sleeplessness, from hunger I guess, even though I saved all my cals for last thing. Was arguing with myself at 3am as to when my NFD would officially begin, had a tiny slice of compromise cheese at 5.30am and went back to bed till baby o'clock!

Anyone else got the night hungers? Any old timers around...does that go away? Any tips to reduce it?

NFD coming in at 1600 again, but my TDEE is 2246 which I've not managed to hit yet, but I did have two NFDs of 2000 at the wknd so I guess that's ok?

Loving this so far. Can't believe it fits my needs so neatly. About bloody time. Grin

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 14/01/2014 18:39

Some of us just refuse to live in a world without oil, butter, bread, cheese, booze and chocolate

I'm not prepared to live without any of those, eve when pregnant I would have tiny amounts of wine because it just tastes lovely.

I've done my fast day today. Came in at 800 cals, so not too bad. I could happily keep eating iykwim. This is where the mantra "I can have it tomorrow comes in"

zedzedzed · 14/01/2014 18:41

Poor nouvelle eat protein next time, you're allowed! Chicken breast in the ovenwith spices and a giant salad...or smoked salmon and poached eggs on salad...or a cheesy omlette...if you save your cals for the evening you can have something really lovely and have fat and protein too. It's the carbs that mess with me on FDs.

Keep experimenting with what keeps you feeling well, don't give up, don't cry/snot into cheesybeans, just make a plan to do it differently next time...and meantime...YOU CAN HAVE IT TOMORROW! XXX

spilsons · 14/01/2014 18:44

Hello everyone,

Hope your fasting is going well! Weighed myself this morning after FD yesterday, have lost 4lb from last monday. Don't know how 'true' this is though as last week's weight was not after a FD. Have also lost an inch though so that's good! (And I had a 3 course meal out on both Friday and Saturday night!)

How are you all finding it? I find once I get to about 4pm ish, im fine (probably knowing that dinner's on the way and I can eat the next day!) Just reminds me that my desire to eat is completely psychological!

Happy fasting everyone xx

RavenousRunner · 14/01/2014 18:57

Something I realised which I'm hoping to remember on FDs: I've eaten about 1300 calories (well, 750 net with exercise) and am just as hungry as I was this time yesterday on 230.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/01/2014 19:15

I agree with SouthEast & others that 5:2 is a permanent WOL for me.

Whether you have health or weight issues, jumping on a diet for a few months and then returning to the same behaviour that caused those problems is not going to work.

As post- meno, I can no longer eat massive amounts every day and burn it all off in the gym, as I used to.
I cannot bear to diet every day for the rest of my life, but I can easily fast for 1 or 2 days per week, ad infinitum. Yes, it takes some discipline, but so does every other weight control method. Just choose whatever suits you.

Like some others here, I'm a scientist and I don't do fads.
Before deciding on 5:2, I had read umpteen scientific papers and studies, to decide the healthiest way for me to lose fat while retaining muscle. Intermittent fasting -IF /5:2/ fast 5 / ADF etc - is cutting edge science and may have additional health benefits of switching the body more to repair mode.

Jobyloo · 14/01/2014 19:15

Nice point ravenous! Hunger is hunger regardless of how many cals consumed , so that'll help me keep it in perspective tomorrow my next FD when the hunger pangs pay a visit Smile

Bumblebeejumble · 14/01/2014 19:20

Well, I'm feeling pretty proud of myself! I'd been really wary of fasting on days when I have to go into the office, as thought if be too grumpy. Also may have been afraid the audible tummy rumbling may have put coworkers off :) BUT I did it today and other than being totally bloody freezing all blimming day, this was the easiest yet! Deffo going to do this again. But I'll take a cardi next time...

I get SOOOOOOO hungry on fd bedtimes. I rearranged everything from about week 2 so that I only start eating (coffee excepted) at 6pm, and have a substantial-ish snack at 9. Otherwise I'm too cross and cold to sleep at all, which doesn't help anything.

Regarding the 'diet' / 'woe' thing, I kind of see it as both a way to lose weight as well as teaching myself how to eat propery in the future. I'm definitely planning on going down to 6:1 when I'm near or at my goal weight, but I can't believe it took me 33 years to realise I don't actually need biscuits at 11am and 4pm and just before bed.

I was initially attracted to the woe/diet as literally everyone else in my family is overweight and has type two diabetes. One of my uncles went on a vlcd for about four months, and rid himself of insulin injections. If 5:2 or 6:1 can give me some control over developing diabetes, I'm very willing to give it a go. If I can teach my kids (eventually, when they're much much older) a way for them to not get diabetes then I'd be a very happy lady. And not being a lardbucket would be just dandy Smile

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 14/01/2014 19:20

I'm not doing very well. I'm not doing bad, but I'm finding it difficult, much more so than last week. Yesterday was a FD, I had 600 calories (not under 500 like planned, but still a deficit), today I had a wrap for lunch (500) calories and enchiladas for tea (not sure of calories, but I had 1400 to play with). I should be going swimming, but I really don't want to. I'm tired and its cold outside. Like last night I am just in a lazy eat a lot mood. I'm managing to keep away from the kitchen, but I just want to eat.

Jobyloo · 14/01/2014 19:23

I think this has to be a Way of living for me because I've been on so many bloody diets over the last 30yrs, that I've decided enough is enough. I want to feel in control (FD's help me do this) but I also want to live as well!! I think what I'm learning although still a newbie is moderation. Sick of being on a yo-yo and also a victim of my weight! Finally think my headspace is sorted Wink and I can make the changes. I also want to enjoy clothes shopping for the summer instead of dreading it, as well as challenging myself to fitness goals instead of whimping out!

Gluezilla · 14/01/2014 19:24

Toffee
I cooked a roast dinner for DH and the DC - they were Grin and also did nice packed lunches for everyone tomorrow.( they usually pack their own)
I think smelling the food stopped me from feeling too hungry - maybe it was by osmosis or something ! Grin
I really like the lifestyle element to this WOE
I did have a big think about why I have been overeating and it was really down to tiredness.
Had a chat with DH and came to the conclusion I need to go to bed earlier than him.
He loves staying up until 11.30 and then comes to bed ,THROWS himself into bed waking me up . I get up for work at 5.30 and less than 6 hours was leaving me feeling awful on a 12 hour work day.
We have agreed that on work nights I need to be asleep by 9.30 and if he wants to fanny about downstairs he will sleep in the spare room.
Its amazing how much better I feel Smile

Xpost with Biscuits
Sounds like we are the same!
Hot bath, book and an early night ?

Gluezilla · 14/01/2014 19:31

Ive come in at 524 on my first day.
Would have been under if I hadn't had that Satsuma at lunch but I can bear the thought of constipation Blush

CinammonGirl · 14/01/2014 19:34

Hey all, FD dinner was lush, roasted red peppers stuffed with tomato cous cous and feta cheese. Feeling peckish again now and quite tired so I have enough cals left for an options hot choc, going to have that then go to bed and read. All in all I feel it's gone really well for my first fast day!

Could someone please clarify something for me? I used the link at the top to calculate mu TDEE and its saying 2383 cals - can this be right? It seems awfully high. I'm 5ft2and weigh 87.9kg BMI 35.4. Does the TDEE seem right?

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 14/01/2014 19:37

I am cold. I am tired. I am tummy achey.

Does anyone find that on normal eat days they eat dinner and it sets off the munchies. I have 300 ish calories left but just want to eat. I fasted yesterday, have had 3 meals today but just want to eat.

I imagined eating some chocolate and it showed me it is comfort/hoping it would give me energy eating that I want to do.
