Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

postmanpatscat - yes, I have Wii fit. Going to look at the choices now.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/01/2014 09:38

As usual the kids haven't out the disc away properly so I am doing the active disc instead.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/01/2014 10:10

I did about 10 minutes and remembered how much I enjoy it but had to stop as I had only cancelled one set of squats and when it came on I could only do one. It kept saying I was doing them wrong and wouldn't let me move on. I went back to the beginning by mistake and then got annoyed so have set my goals, weighed myself and now I will do some housework and maybe go on again later.

LilyJoAndMe · 13/01/2014 10:34

Hello everyone ,
It's great to read all the different posters. From all different parts of the world too.
Here I'm ill. As I didn't feel hungry at all yesterday and had a high temperature so just slept, I decided to move my FD to Sunday rather than Monday. Is that ok ?

CheshireSplat · 13/01/2014 10:41

Morning all. FD for me too. Have had a cuppa and feeling positive about today! Nice to know there's so many other people doing it too!

frumpet · 13/01/2014 10:46

errolthedragon thanks for the calorie content of skimmed milk , i do look at MFP but it seems very american , so was struggling to find the right skimmed milk iyswim.

LilyJoAndMe · 13/01/2014 10:51

There's something I've been wanting to say for a while, but I'm having a hard time finding the exact words.
So I'm going to give it a go and hope it'll come out clearly.

When I read posts written by people who are struggling with some issue regarding 5:2 , I feel immense appreciation that they have actually put this problem into words and then braved themselves to share it here. I think that is a wonderful achievement in itself and something that posters wrestling with uncertainties or even big difficulties can feel proud of. I, for one, admire them.

So, know Toffee that I find you very brave and I wish you well everytime I read you .

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 13/01/2014 10:52

Morning! This may or may not be a fast day depending on how rubbish I feel as day goes on.

Just wanted to say

............ CLENCH ............

....... DRINK WATER ........

aaaaaaaaaaaand

...... MEDICATE YOURSELF! .......

(If you need to that is. Don't just start necking Ibuprofen/Valium/Ketamine - it is not , I repeat not a part of 5:2) Grin

Happy Monday fasting those who are!

BsshBossh · 13/01/2014 11:28

Hello all newcomers .

peplum, yes I think I might be at goal. Officially I still have 2 lbs to go but I'm really happy where I am now (BMI 21! Whoop!). Still doing 5:2 though (for health) so will simply be more flexible about my evening 500 cals.

hopeful I'm another one who found calorie counting incredibly instructive. I did it for a year in order to learn what healthy, normal portion sizes were and now don't need to do it as I can instinctively eyeball portion sizes these days (my stomach is a good guide too).

MrsF big hug to you and your DD. How awful they gave her the adult's antibiotics Angry.

Dotty that's a great NSV!

FD Monday for me today. Gym at "lunch time" then will break fast with soup this evening.

Dotty342kids · 13/01/2014 11:41

is that a home made soup BsshBossh? If so, what? I love home made soups so always on the look out for new ones. Last week made a lovely one from Covent Garden Soup recipe book; was red lentil, thyme and lemon. Even my DH who grumbles about anything unless it has heaps of spices / salt in it, was won over Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 13/01/2014 12:00

MrsF Flowers to your poor DD - and to you for coping with it all

LilyJo Hope you soon recover from your lurgy Flowers
Don't do any FDs until you feel fully recovered, regardless of whether that is Monday. On this WOL, health comes first and your body needs plenty of nutrients to combat illness.
The standard lurgy advice: DRINK, no junk should keep you within TDEE.

Good energetic start to your day, Eat

RavenousRunner · 13/01/2014 12:04

Good thing I skipped breakfast, as it turns out I have to go out to lunch today. Looking at the menu, I wonder what 'Hot and Sour Cod Broth' is? Sounds 5:2 worthy, but also a bit nasty. 'Grilled Pork Chop with Cider Cream Sauce' will have to wait for an NFD. Mmm pork...

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/01/2014 12:14

Thanks very much LilyJo though I am not feeling brave now.

I decided I would give the kitchen a thorough clean and this involved pulling out the fridge. I found a dead mouse. Got rid. Pushed the fridge half way back in and found another. Got rid. Pushed the fridge all the way back in, hid in the utility room and peeped out. Yep, another one. I cried when I told DH Blush. The cats will now be sleeping in the utility room at night and DH is out shopping later for some traps. I know it is what cats do but FABCat only ever did it about twice and I just can't deal with them. Unbeknown to me by 8 year old just gets rid if he comes down first and there is a present Shock.

.

FD still going well though I confess I have had 2 small squares of Kendal mint cake. I figure with the Wii, housework and mouse induced heart rate racing I have burnt that off!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/01/2014 12:16

RavenousRunner - I suspect broth is soup or maybe a light stew.

LilyJoAndMe · 13/01/2014 12:30

Go for it Toffee- girl. Here's thinking about you.
Thanks for the wishes and the kindly advice BigChoc.

madhairday · 13/01/2014 12:36

Just caught up. Thanks to breadandwine for the recipe links :)

MrsF, hope your dd is better soon, what a nightmare re the abs Hmm Poor love.

I am on my third FD and feeling it. Haven't yet eaten, planning to fast lunch too and have stir fry for tea. Reading this thread has helped strengthen my crumbling resolve....

first weigh in tomorrow. Doesn't feel like I've lost anything but I know this is a slow and steady thing, which my body needs as my metabolism is screwed through illness.

Dotty342kids · 13/01/2014 12:39

Have you all seen the Dr M webchat that's on right now? I'm not keen on idea of HIT but can see why it would be effective Smile. He's just stated, very clearly, that exercising in a fasted state is more effective than in a non fasted state as your body will turn to its fat stores for the energy that's needed.
I know that's a question that comes up on here often so thought it might be useful!
Off to do today's 110 squats......... Shock to distract me from thoughts of food!

mscnile · 13/01/2014 12:46

FD check in, so far as good, only coffee with a dash of milk since 7pm yesterday.

Toffee our cats bring us daily presents in spring, usually tiny fledglings Sad but the rest of the year they don't seem to bother! not sure why (probably too much like hard work!). I hate dealing with it.

Mrs F hope dd is feeling better, poor thing

Sympathies to poorly folk, hope you all feel better soon

Congrats on various SV and NSV and the whole new you bssh! I'm hovering around BMI of 24 at the moment, would like to be lower, so have set a target of gradual and sustainable loss rather than any quick fixes. Having seriously overindulged at the weekend that's just as well!

Back to work now, good luck with the rest of the FD!

Darnley · 13/01/2014 12:55

Hi all.

Have caught up on thread and taken on board the advice, so will not do 4 FDs, but may do 3, depending on how I feel.

Today is the third FD since starting this last week and I am feeling well and very motivated. Having such a huge amount to lose and massive health improvements to make is hard, but this feels like the right method at the right time.

Will keep watching the thread.

postmanpatscat · 13/01/2014 12:59

Just finished my third cup of peppermint tea. No food til dinner time, and probably off for a run first. Glad MM agrees with exercising in a fasted state as I've been doing that for months! I've run 20k on a Sunday morning fuelled only by yesterday's dinner. In fact, I cancelled my subscription to a running magazine because I was fed up of being told what to eat before exercise and what to eat to recover and to use energy gels in between. I'm just me, not Paula Radcliffe!

Keep going fasters, we can do this.

nouvellevag · 13/01/2014 13:04

Hello, I'm new! First fast day tomorrow. Think I've figured out that I can have a couple of hard boiled eggs, a banana and then share a carton of Covent Garden carrot soup with DH in the evening, which sounds doable. I used to fast loads (too much) when younger, let's see how my body copes a decade later. Eep.

If I was aiming to get within the 'healthy' BMI category then I'd probably be looking at losing half my bodyweight (really), and if I focus too hard on that then I'll go loopy and self-destructive, so it's really going to be one day at a time for me. And I'll see what happens.

DottiestDoris · 13/01/2014 13:10

LilyJo- nice wordsThanks

Im on my third fd today and pleased with my loss so far. Also, really looking for to dinner tonight because I've realised that with having had just half a carton of Covent Garden soup for lunch, I can eat an entire 120g pack of smoked salmon with some salad. Feels very decadent-especially given my DH and DS1 will be eating leftover pasta bake.

EarSlaps · 13/01/2014 13:16

Toffee- my old cat once brought in a half alive bird that then flew all round the living room pooing on everything in fear. If I ever feel sad about not being able to have cats (DH is allergic), I just remember that! Plus I think I'm just too lazy to deal with the extra cleaning!

Mini fast here- will prob be about 800 cals I'd think, but I am maintaining nicely so not too strict these days. Going to try a squid and chorizo stew for dinner. Fingers crossed it'll be nice.

I'll have to read through the MM webchat later. I try to exercise fasted when I can, don't always manage to though as have to fit it all around boys. I feel fine when I do and actually find it much easier than when my body is working hard digesting. Postman- I suspect your magazine earned a lot of money promoting those supplements. They do have their place but so many people use energy drinks and protein shakes for workouts and then over eat the rest of the time, using exercise as an excuse. Now I'm leaner I do have a protein shake after a workout occasionally (it's hard to get so much protein with so few calories from food and I'm trying to build up a bit of muscle), but I do take it into account in my overall consumption and I'm mindful of calories in vs calories burnt even though I don't actually log them.

Tinkertaylor1 · 13/01/2014 13:17

Morning all!

FD for me! Just did yogalaties and had a boiled egg, will be having a sliver of steak pie I'm making for evening meal.

Hope your all doing well and feeling positive.

zedzedzed · 13/01/2014 13:18

Hi nouvell almost half my bodyweight to go here too and I'm also new. I started a week ago, it's brilliant so far so I think you're in the right place. They said it to me so I'll say it to you, when you're on an FD (fast day) remember: you can have it tomorrow.

I haven't eaten since 8pm dinner last night and won't have anything at all but clear liquids till 8pm tonight, then I'll have pea soup and an egg on toast.

Non FD tomorrow though...am planning a cheesy omelette lunch and a dinner of pork and fennel sausages and fried (yes fried) potatoes with mushrooms, onions, peppers and greens...and a chocolate pud. See? You can have it tomorrow!
