The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Morning all Smile.

Hope your day gets better Not2b.

I woke up feeling sick and still do a bit. Not hungry though. Bit disappointed I am still the same weight I have been for days but I am learning that it can take a couple of days to show a loss or gain depending on whether you have fasted or stuffed your face.

Does anyone have any ideas for food helping hormones. I feel so low today. In the last few months my cycle has changed in that I feel PMT-y at different times of the month to what I have for the previous 20 years. I don't like it, I hate change and I hate feeling unsettled. I suppose I am thinking in terms of at those times do I fast or eat properly as I doubt any food can make the feelings go away. I don't seem to have those stuff your face days as I cant eat as much as a used too and I am learning not to see food as a treat as such or a crutch to make myself feel better or as a reward. I just want to feel better emotionally as it reminds me of when I had depression and it scares me.

20 hours of the fast almost done. Feel cross I had a bit of soup last night as it feels a fraud to claim a 24 hour fast when I have eaten in between.

DS1 back to school today. DD and DS2 back tomorrow. Physio and RSPCA check today and otherwise we are in. Blowing a gale and raining and I just want to stay in really.

ELR · 06/01/2014 09:07

Morning all, good luck to everyone new and seasoned fasters alike!
I'm fasting today first real one since before mid December as only did mini ones last week. Didn't go to bed until around 1.30am and been up in the night and then ds was up at 7.15am so feeling pretty tired!
Kids don't go back to school until tomorrow, can't wait!!
Today I'm planning to make a tomato and basil soup for lunch and then I have cod or maybe chicken breast for tea with loads of veg. WhTs everyone else having?

muffins · 06/01/2014 09:14

Toffee

I have a school friend on Facebook always posting health stuff And I'm sure she put something up about flaxseed and women's hormones, sorry if I'm wrong, only saw it in passing

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 06/01/2014 09:19

I am having home made Winter Vegetable Soup for lunch and jacket potato and cheese for dinner. Still have loads of cheese to eat up. All fancy as well so not sure I can grate it on the soup!

positively9something · 06/01/2014 09:21

Morning all, well yesterday I had over eaten a lot but I had also been to the gym! And this morning I weighed 10.3.6 Hmm so from just before Xmas to now I have put on 4lbs.

Today is a fast day, I really don't fancy it Hmm and I will be in my freezing cold office all day. I'm feeling very down at the moment and the last thing I need to to starve today Confused

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 06/01/2014 09:28

I have heard of flaxseed and will look into it, thank you muffins.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 06/01/2014 09:32

Then don't positively9something. Defer it to another day. Down and cold and hungry = hard fast day unless you can use it as a real achievement if you do do it.

BsshBossh · 06/01/2014 09:34

Welcome Darnley and muffins.

Morning all. Well, first day back at school and normal working hours resume. I really enjoyed the Christmas break but it was a full house and the only time I got any real time and quiet to myself was when it was bedtime. I really need solitude to feel like myself and as I work alone from home I am so happy everything's gone back to normal today: I have the house to myself, yippppppeeeee! Time to recharge (yes, even whilst working).

FD today but for some reason I'm fantasising about a McDonald's Hmm Blush.

nogravitasatall · 06/01/2014 09:36

Right, I'm in. In 7 months I've put on nearly a stone, the fastest weight gain in my entire life and I was already a stone over my ideal. I read the article in the Times on Saturday which led me to these boards and thought I'd try 5:2 to begin with so I can choose my fast days. Today is my first fast, I'll get weighed later gulp

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 06/01/2014 09:40

Enjoy the peace Bssh. I am looking forward to peace tomorrow though I have plans to do lots of cleaning and tidying. I have decided we have too much stuff in the house.

Welcome nogravitasatall. You have come to the right place Smile.

MrsFlorrick · 06/01/2014 09:47

Morning everyone. Grin

Not2. Ugh. I hope you survive today. You could always move you FD to another day? Sympathy from me. Brew

Something very odd. I weigh daily as I've said before. Helps keep me on straight and narrow. Particularly stops me over eating in NFD.
I've been stuck between 158lbs and 160lbs for over 11 weeks now.

The last 3 days I've been consistently 158lbs. I fasted yesterday and did my workout too.
This morning it's up to 160lbs! Over night!!?!
I did "go" twice yesterday. It's not TOMT.
It's quite odd. I'm just saying really. Normally I can see exactly how I swing between 158 and 160 but this is an anomaly. Smile

The windy weather is wrecking havoc with our 200 year old roof. I've had flashing lift in a couple of places around chimney stacks so we have had water coming in. Very little water mind you. But it's a pain in a£&@ any way. House is newly refurbed and decorated so its p&ssing me off. AngryAngry

I can't get a roofer up to repair either until the winds die down. Access is awkward so it needs to be safe. Angry

Oh well. I should just get over it really as my problems are of the high maintenance end of first world problems. Wink

Good luck to the fasters today!

And was it Definite who lost 9lbs in a week? Wow!!! Result! Well done.

And well done to all the other newbies who stuck out their first few fasts. Thanks

It gets easier. Much easier. Grin

And what's that DM thingy about fasting and low carb combo?

It sounds like an excuse to flog another book to me!!

I've been combining low carb days and FD and it didn't need a book to tell me it works well Hmm

Toffee. How are you??

Turkey and you??

Bssh. You're racing ahead of me! With my massive nearly 3 month stall, you will get to goal long before me.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 06/01/2014 09:58

Morning! Just about to do my kettle bell work out.

I had an odd weekend, DD3 wasn't well, so I didn't do much. She is still a bit clingy and grumpy today.

FD here today, the food plan is a green smoothie when I can't wait any longer and then a small portion of chickpea curry for dinner. I'm easing myself back in still, can't believe how relaxed I am about food since 5:2!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 06/01/2014 10:02

MrsF - I can't advise on the anomaly as I don't understand it all yet myself. Maybe it will come off in the next couple of days?

Sympathies about your roof. I was upset enough when some fence panels came down. I hope you are able to get it fixed soon with not too much damage.

I fell the other day, it was an M&S fall Grin, and my wrist was playing up this morning but I am used to having dodgy arms Hmm.

Feel blue today but have to go out soon and the weather is foul so will be focused on that and not on myself which is ridiculous.

Hope things are better with your H.

headintheclouds · 06/01/2014 10:07

muffins welcome - you will be fine and you may feel hungry, but like betsy says keep drinking .I found plenty of fruit/ herbal tea kept me going in the early days

PoshPaula · 06/01/2014 10:34

Okay fellow fasters we can do this! I am feeling motivated!! Today will be hard, after two weeks of overeating (in my case, at least) but it will be worth it!!

nogravitasatall · 06/01/2014 10:38

Using mfp to help plan fast day meals(very handy suggestion that), and I think I've discovered my main problem. cheese. And Bread. Just can't have favourite things on fast days! Plain omelette I think. ..

mehefin · 06/01/2014 10:51

Hello everyone

Dr M. on radio 5 live at 2pm means you have to put up with the laddishness that is Richard Bacon

TheBitchesOfWeestick · 06/01/2014 11:49

Decided to give this a proper go and am having my first FD today...fairly hungry but just about to go and have some soup. Will have 360 cals left for tea, which seems pretty good :)

DD is eating cake from a party bag right in front of me though Hmm

I would like to lose about a stone - I'm not hugely overweight, but definitely flabby and saggy. And I'm quite short too, so it shows more. Would like to end up around 9st as that looks good on me.

mscnile · 06/01/2014 11:52

love your username bitchesofweestick!
Struggling here, but have only had coffee so far

Eatriskier · 06/01/2014 11:53

Hello all, welcome newcomers!

Well haven't you all had a busy weekend?

I've been ill since Friday [sick] but felt better yesterday. Had a lovely lunch courtesy of DM yesterday and thought I was really on the mend. Then today I woke up feeling worse than I did before, couldn't even get out of bed to jump on my cross trainer and am currently loading up on lemsip. Meh. Not even sure i'm going to manage hula hooping later either. The bad news is that I'm massively craving sweets, the good news is I know they're not really going to help me and I'm not all that hungry anyway.

Good luck today's fasters and hope all miserable ill people get better soon

BigChocFrenzy · 06/01/2014 12:06

Toffee Helping hormones:

I recommend trying flaxmeal, available from health food shops like Holland & Barrat, also some supermarkets now.
I have it hot instead of porridge, because it is so healthy for women and easy to prepare:

  • Put about 30g flaxmeal / 4 tablespoons in a bowl and
  • Optionally add oat bran or oat flakes.
  • Add boiling water and stir
  • Add a bit more water and keep stirring until it thickens
  • Optionally add 10g chopped dark choc and 1 teaspoon pnut butter OR berries and flaked almonds etc
  • Add milk to taste and to thin it down (I prefer almond milk, put any will do)
  • Add sweetener to taste (flaxmeal on its own definitely needs it)
  • Sprinkle with cinammon powder

Although they say one can sprinkle flaxmeal cold on soups, salads etc, I personally found it tasted yuk like that.

Another recommendation: Take daily Evening Primrose Oil capsules. I buy a big bottle from H&B again.

Peplum41 · 06/01/2014 12:11

Ooh hello ((mehefin)), not seen you round these parts for a while. Just been having a quiet lurk. Is Dr. M on 5 live to talk about 5:2 or HIIT? Flowers

I also clocked a lesser spotted hurricane the other day. ((local wave))

Im having a break from fasting this week as on antibiotics which require to be taken with food. Im not turning it into an excuse for stuffing face, she says hopefully.

Hi new starters, not mentioning names as they disappear never to be seen again if I do....

toffee thanks for soup recipe, Do you think you might have a touch of SAD? As I type its so dark, but look at the time?

biscuits hope that new job works out. Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 06/01/2014 12:11

Eat Poor you. I hope you soon feel better again. I know you'll try to eat healthily and resist junk [moral support]
Flowers
Don't try to exercise until you feel better; it can slow down recovery and that damn hoop can bang your tum if you're not fully coordinated.
If you feel up to it, have a short walk outside, but only if the weather is dry and not windy.

Peplum41 · 06/01/2014 12:13

Hi eats I just misread your post as you had lunch courtesy of Dr M!! That would be nice, but I hope he paid.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/01/2014 12:16

MrsF Sorry to hear you are being leaked on. Let's hope you can have it repaired very soon, so no damage to your house's recent spruce-up.
This weather is a bugger, but better a leak than a lurgy.
