The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Hi Mrsbungle
We're fast twins! I did my first ever Fd on Monday and second today. It seems ok eh?! This thread is ace dor support and motivation. Welcome!

curveballs · 08/01/2014 21:11

I struggled with my first NFD after my first fast tbh. I was up early and late home working in London all day. I was quite good all day but then had some beers when I got home, and felt really annoyed with myself. Today, has been much better. Ate well, relatively healthily and made sure I had sufficient calories. Was quite surprised how much under I was until I bumped up my dinner actually. Just goes to show how many calories are in alcohol.
You'll be fine tomorrow

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 21:12

Welcome MrsBungle!

I hope dh does not come up to bed with any food as I would weaken. I'm in bed, watching tv, have cold feet and the cat is unwilling to move and sit on them.

TimeToPassGo · 08/01/2014 21:15

I've just ordered that Paul McKenna Emotional Eating book / CD / DVD. It was the evening comfort evening that was my downfall on NFDs. Will be interesting to see if it helps! :)

TalkinPeace · 08/01/2014 21:19

Timetopassgo
anything that helps you (and others) crack the evening snacking routines would be really really good.

I'm no help at all on that as I never did
but have gathered that its a humungous problem
that needs solving

DottiestDoris · 08/01/2014 21:35

Well, for Zedzed and anybody else now dribbling at the thought of baked camembert, you'll be pleased to know that although they are an indulgence, they are actually lower in fat than hard cheeses such as Cheddar. People often assume the opposite, because they look creamy I would think. But actually, they are soft because they still have lots of moisture (whey) in, where as Cheddar etc has most of the whey pressed out, leaving the fat. So again, you can feel SLIGHTLY virtuous as you bake your cheese! Wine

kirlou69 · 08/01/2014 21:36

Have read the book in one day, next day watched the Horizon program and was fascinated by the science research behind it (maybe because I am training to become a Science teacher also).
My daughter (16.5) and I will be doing our first 'fast' day tomorrow and our second one on Monday. I am a little bewildered by the amount of information and advice at the moment but also picking up some really good tips.
We both want to lose around a stone and to decrease any chance of cancer, diabetes in our future lives.
We have planned our breakfast tomorrow and won't eat again til 7.30pm, also ate tonight at 7pm and will both resist any pudding or supper later instead a black coffee for me and a one cal drink for my daughter!
Wish us luck? Smile

CJMommy · 08/01/2014 21:42

Evening all Smile

First FD was on Monday and second one tomorrow. My TDEE is 1650 and astounded when i realised i'd only had 1400 yesterday! So, have tracked and planned properly today and had 1550 although feeling a bit stuffed. Think I need to look at higher calorie content as opposed to quantity. I'm also not drinking alcohol in Jan as thought this would help kick start my weight loss; 1-2 glasses of wine most nights is not unusual for me and I want to kick the habit!

I'm still managing to do 16:8 too. However, at bedtime I do like an Ovaltine [sad old lady] which is 190 ish cals with ss milk - does this mean the fast is broken or does it not count as only a liquid?

I've downloaded the Happy scale app and looks quite good. However, I haven't been on the scales sine starting on Monday - I'm almost scared too as don't want to go into destructive mode if I haven't lost! I really need to do my measurements at the weekend. Although I have one pair of jeans that I am using as a marker (can just do the button up at the moment and very uncomfortable).

Good luck to everyone who is on a FD tomorrow. I am trying to keep up with this thread but it moves soooooo fast!

PoshPaula · 08/01/2014 21:54

This thread moves incredibly fast! I am fasting tomorrow and am not going anywhere near the scales for another week at least, after the Christmas excesses.
I will be looking for support tomorrow..... Good luck everyone!

BetsyBell · 08/01/2014 21:55

If cheese in copious quantities was off limits, I wouldn't be doing this.

That is all.

Enjoy your cheese (on a NFD)

tomorrowweeat · 08/01/2014 21:55

Have gone to bed early as I'm getting hungry. Fast day went well but my feet are freezing!

BigChocFrenzy · 08/01/2014 22:02

Lots of cheese fans on this thread. Cheese has high calcium for our bones and is just so satisfing, especially hot and bubbly.
For Saturday brunch, I love a cheese fondue baked in the oven, with some fresh baked sesame rolls and slices of apple or low-sugar strawberry jam.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 08/01/2014 22:07

dottiest I think you should be the resident cheese expert.

Well I've don't my fast today. Succumbed to a bit of dark chocolate but only went over my 1000 cal limit by 5 cals so I'm calling it a successful day. And that includes a trip to a playgroup, normally the only way I get through them is with lots of cake.

All this talk of cheese and crumpets is making me hungry though so it's off to bed for me.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/01/2014 22:08

CJmummy Calories count the same, whether solid or liquid.
If you have less than 50 cals total in a fasting period of at least 12 hrs, that won't raise insulin levels appreciably, so counts as zero and doesn't break the fast.

However, your 190 cals drink is basically a small meal. Hot milky drinks often are like that.
Some fancy lattes in coffee shops can be an entire FD allowance.

TimeToPassGo · 08/01/2014 22:24

TIP stopping my comfort eating is honestly the hardest thing I've ever done. I've been doing it for so long on and off that it's just completely hardwired into my brain. Hope McKenna can spook me into eating 3 healthy meals a day! :)

DottiestDoris · 08/01/2014 22:28

Grin Betsy

Whenshewasbad-I'd be happy to take that role. Throw your cheesy questions my way! It's amazing what you learn when you like something so much.
If I had to choose between chocolate and cheese, it would be a no brainer for me. As long as the cheese came with wine.
I think I know why I have weight to lose!

LilyJoAndMe · 08/01/2014 22:29

Hi there everyone,

Just finished my 4th FD- the second for the week.

I'd intended to do my next FD tomorrow but the way things started to go I couldn't make time for lunch so I decided to swap the days around. I was nervous about it at first because I'd nothing in at home that was ok in terms of calories and that I'd feel satisfied taste-wise with for my evening meal. But I have the MFP app on my phone and quickly went to by some steak to grill and green veggies after working out a meal for about 350 cals with hhe app . 350 was all I had left of my ration.

It was haaaard going round that shop as smells from the deli counter accompanied me and my rumbling tummy whlst we quickly made our way round. But, I was very proud of us as we shuffled out of the shop snack-less and armed with many greens.
And so, we made it.
500 cals Smile.
And now onto 4 FDs till end of week.
I've enjoyed catching up on the thread and wish all tomorrow's fasters lots of luck and inspiration .
It's true - you can have it tomorrow .Grin

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 08/01/2014 22:37

CJmommy for the sake of balancing things out and making this life as comfortable/sustainable as poss - why not kill two birds - take care of your slight nfd deficit by using it for your bedtime drink. If you are 5:2ing anyway, then 16:8 isn't essential.
Either reduce it by the couple of hrs difference before bedtime; ignore that it is over 50 cals Grin so still counts; or only have it on those days when you've come under your tdee and forget 16:8 for that day.

Make it as enjoyable as can and it will feel so much easier longterm.

As and when the wine comes back in, you will have no probs using your extra cals then! You can always swap ovaltine for vino then.

Or as you may have heard, a lot of us do come in under during week, but we use this as our weekend free for all buffer Grin Works quite nicely!

BigChocFrenzy · 08/01/2014 22:38

Well done, LilyJo, it gets easier.

CJMommy · 08/01/2014 23:12

Thanks BCF/Cuckoo Smile
I remember reading about the under 50cals fasting somewhere in one of the 5:2 threads.

Think I will use hot milky drink for deficit and bring it forward an hour (going to bed earlier may not be a bad idea either)!

hopefulgum · 08/01/2014 23:18

Elfina, when I first started 5:2 I did my normal swimming workout and got out of the pool all shaky and nearly fell over. I felt awful for ages afterwards. So,for me, working out on a fast day isn't an option. I will take a long walk instead.

My friend who inspired me to do the 5:2 has always worked out on fast days, but she is someone who has been a heavy exerciser her whole life, so I think she was able to cope with it.

We all just have to find what works for us.

The idea that there are rewards from fasting and exercising (more weight loss, better health advantages) had me spurred on, but feeling so awful after my swim and barely managing the shower afterwards really put me off.

Today is another FD for me. I have to make pistachio and hazelnut gelato today for a party we are hosting tomorrow night. That may prove challenging, but I will just have to wait until tomorrow to taste it....

BigChocFrenzy · 08/01/2014 23:18

Ow, I succumbed to a delicious but unplanned Indian cheese & chicken Paneer supper - and who produced the damn pistachios afterwards ?

My planned 2800 cal day turned into 3430
Blush so I must remember that's my extra cals for the weekend gone too.

Just as well it's Thursday tomorrow.
Hi in advance to the Thursday FD gang ^^

RavenousRunner · 09/01/2014 06:08

FD today, lots of motivation but after DH's lovely but light kale speltotto last night I woke up with an already-rumbling stomach. Looking forward to toast, egg and kale at 8, soup for lunch and a bit of whatever's for dinner - aiming for about 800 today.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 09/01/2014 06:53

TimeToPassGo - Paul didn't help me but these guys on here did. Good luck.

Morning all. It is blowing a gale here today. Quick post as I need to make 2 packed lunches and get chicken casserole in the slow cooker.

Weigh the same again, 11 stone 6lbs. So frustrating. It did get me thinking though and I recall now that this always happens when I try and lose weight. I lose about a stone then nothing. It happened when I did the diet chef plan, it happened when I did Pig to Twig and now again. Today I intend to have three meals if I can and then see what happens next week. I just know my weight will creep up again so I have to be careful. I remember also when I was doing DC I got stuck so I took a week off and just ate what I wanted. I lost weight.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Butteredsidedown · 09/01/2014 07:03

First weigh in...

Lost 3 lbs.

Pretty pleased with that considering had sainsburys curry, and other good stuff on nfds.

What is happening to me? I appear to be eating like a normal person on nfds. Totally able to go between meals, not be hungry all the time and just eat a normal sized portion. This WOE is genius.
