The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

hopeful 500 calorie fasts are the standard WOE for 5:2. Some of us think there may be better health & weight benefits from reducing calories and increasing fasting duration (by a bit) but the jury is out still on this.

Hi Everyone. I have only done one Ff so far, which was ok. I'm doing mine tues and thurs as it fits with me. Just wanted opinions on how you have your 500 cals? I had a yog with some seeds during the day and then a bowl of salad with sweet corn and chicken at dinner time. So do most people nibble their 500 cals during the day or save them up and only have one meal?

Hi there ,
Having a hard time getting back to sleep. I'm back to work tomorrow after my hols. I 'm also going to be doing my 3rd FD.
Yesterday , I spent ages weighing, counting and cooking my meal for my FD. When I get home I think I'll be ravenous. I know I'll be tired so all in all I prefered to be ready and have my meal waiting.
I live in France and my husband is French. It's important for us that we try to eat together at the end of the day. But he finishes late and so that means I have to wait until late before I can eat anything.
This is where I have developed some bad snacking habits. So tomorrow I'll be crossing my fingers, toes and all ( hair ?) to stay on course then. I'm nervous.
Ok, going to try and get some more sleep.

First FD since July today for me - good thing too as I put on another 1.5 lb yesterday! That's me up 7 lbs since the middle of December, and 2.5 since the end of the holidays. Time to get some control back.

All that said my pupil master may want to take me to lunch today as it's my last day with him - is there anything I could eat in a restaurant that wouldn't be more than a few hundred calories? I don't want it to be obvious I'm not eating as it seems rude. But really do want to fast today.

123 Having two small meals is fine though there's some reports that saving the 500 cals until as late as possible has extra health benefits and for some people that's more practical. Ultimately the most important thing is the consistent and marked contrast between the cals you consume when fasting between the cals you consume on NFD's.

Ravenous I would have lots of steamed or boiled veg with a hot low cal drink. Stay away from processed carbs, sugar and fat and maybe they could boil or poach an egg or two for you also.

Lily I sometimes think about people in France and how they get on fasting...must be hard sometimes with so much good quality cheese, bread and wine available. Before your husband gets home then you need to hit the very low cal hot drinks - my favourite is hot water with lemon - and think of them as your 'snacks'.

And remember that if you feel like eating chocolate or something that you can have it tomorrow.

hopeful We all have blow-outs now and then. Getting back on track the day after like you're doing is great so don't feel guilty or anything. Some of us have found that the occasional blow-out can actually help with weight/size loss. Something to do with keeping your metabolism guessing, I think.

FD for me too, working at home all day so will need lots of will power.

Can't remember who asked about managing the 500 cals but I generally keep going without food as long as I can - once I eat it sets me off and I really struggle! I find an omelette with a big plateful of green salad fills me up, or some soup if I'm cold. I've learned to avoid picking on grapes (though I love them!) and try to be as low carb as possible - as southeast said, I can have it tomorrow!

17 hours of the 24 completed and I am ok, vv tired as my eldest decided to wake me at 2.30am and proceeded to keep me awake pretty much the rest of the night(woke the whole family at one point or another) Not dealing with this v well, very cross and irritated now. Don't know how I'll make it through the rest of the day. Not cause of lack of food but lack if sleep. I struggle to sleep as it is and I get a lot bit precious about it. I know I should be lovely comforting mummy but I'm not, I'm cross/cranky mummy. Good thing we're going our separate ways, me to work, her to school.
Dreading the drive to the office, lashing rain and stormy here, it's going to be hideous and no doubt there'll be a number of crashes like every time the weathers like this.
Ahh just call me ray of sunshine. Be having a lot of coffee today

Not2 sleep depravation is a form of torture for a reason! There's nothing worse. I am a misery if I've been up through the night - irritable and snappy! This is especially the case if it's a surprise awakening. Somehow getting up every three hours to feed a newborn isn't as bad as getting up once a week with a 5 year old. Hang in there. Lots of water, coffee and low cal soft drinks will get you through.

I've now lost 11lb in 6 weeks. I have become a slave to the scales though! If I can, I'd like to stay off the scales for the four weeks that I'm hammering these ex. classes.

Incidentally, in yesterday's Sunday Times Style mag. there's an interesting article re. sugar and a guide on how to cut it out of our diets. 2014 will mark the return of full fat products - "eating fat does not make you fat" whereas sugar does.

Mosley's HIT trial was also referred to. He discovered that pushing his body to the limit for 60 secs, 3 times a week lowered body fat.

Apologies if someone has referred to this article already. I can never keep up with this thread!

Ravenous I have learned I just have to move FDs to avoid social occasions; otherwise I neither enjoyed the occasion nor fasted properly, so felt very dissatisfied. the beauty of this WOL is how flexible it is re FD choice.
But just my take, YMMV.

Have read the book and it made a lot of sense. Also seems to be more sustainable than the usual diets.
We both need to improve our health and lose a lot of weight, so here goes...

Morning all!

I walked to work, only takes ten minutes and I'm soaked through already and don't know why I bothered to style my hair.

I'm fasting today, no breakfast or lunch planned, probably a can of soup for dinner and that will do me until tomorrow morning. I have done LOF plenty of times in the past but we have a school trip tomorrow and I will need my wits about me and a large breakfast!

New starters - don't worry too much about the hours people are posting up! As long as you stick to the principle of keeping calories low all day (until tomorrow morning) then you will have achieved a fast day.

Seasoned fasters have worked out what works for them and may be pushing themselves to go longer without food (hence counting hours).

But if want to have breakfast and an evening meal you can; it worked fine for Michael Mosley and lots of people do it this way.

not2 sleep deprivation is hellish - especially when they're not babies anymore! I have spent many a day explaining to early rising children that mummy wouldn't be so grumpy if you didn't wake her up so blooming early!

Hi All,
Back in the Gym yesterday and proper WI on gym scales ...10 st which is a 4lb increase over the break. I did 6:1 for 2 weeks but went way over TDEE on NFDs ..probably cancelled out the fast days Blush.
Im getting back on 5:2 this week but FD tomorrow and Thurs as Im back in work tomorrow and find it easier to fast in work.
hopeful Some people believe that they lose quicker by throwing in a liquid only / no cal fast now and again.Personally Ive never been able to face no calories. ive always done 5:2 with at least 18 hr fast before my 500 cals..BUT my weight loss has been very slow..

Hi everyone

I'd like to join please, been reading all weekend and having today as first FD. Am at work and got some homemade veg soup and salad for lunch and a different homemade soup for when I get home. Not counting the cals but think it'll work out near 500.
Have yo-yo dieted for years got down to 8st 13 in between DC 1&2. Am only 5ft 2 and am now 11st7 after DC3 (13 weeks old). BMI nearly in obese category, 29.4 or something like that so need to get to 9st 7 to get to healthy BMI eek!
Have found it really helpful reading all your posts.
Fingers crossed I don't pass out before lunchtime!

Morning everyone

It's so hard to keep up with all the news on these threads, you're all so busy, so will say 'hi' to regulars and big welcome to new starts, you won't regret this at all.

Managed to maintain throughout christmas and new year, although celebrated two birthdays this weekend so not so confident about that now.

FD today and despite what i said to Errol on her thread, might go for 3 FD this week as am resting an injured ankle so exercise will be minimal.

Definitely FD today and wednesday though, 3rd would be friday, any tips to boost my confidence in achieving this?
