Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Looks like everyone had good times this week though not so much for mttum (welcome back) and poor toffee.

I had an awful Christmas due to a mostly useless family and have actually lost weight - 2lbs. Not ideal as I was maintaining a healthy BMI of 21 but far from the end of the world. For two days I had little appetite and effectively did mini-fasts on - wait for it - Christmas Day and Boxing Day. A quite upsetting four days and one I can't put myself through again even though it may cause rows. I felt beyond relief when I left yesterday to come back back to London.

On the positive side, for the whole week I ate mindfully and wasn't tempted to emotionally eat. I realised today that I've finally turned a corner about this, one which I never thought would happen a year ago.

Eating out tomorrow twice and chocolate will be making some appearances, as well as mulled wine, straight after meals and not as snacks. I'll weigh again on Monday to see if I need to fast next week.

Mum2Fergus · 28/12/2013 22:51

Ok, tomorrow it is. Weight tonight is 17st3lb6oz and at 5' 6" gives me an obese BMI of 38.9 - only 1.1 from being morbidly obese Hmm could cry now I see it written down.

Will do photos and measurements in the morning...

BsshBossh · 28/12/2013 23:08

Big hugs Southeast...

Mum2 my BMI was 36, now 21. You can do it!

hopefulgum · 28/12/2013 23:37

So much happens on this thread while I sleep! I love mumsnet, it is much better than any Aussie "mums" website, so while I sleep everyone chats, but it is still worth coming on and catching up in the morning with my cup of tea.

Wow! The maintainers and losers on this thread are incredible. Well done! It really is motivating to read of the successes on this thread and keeps me going.

I did well yesterday, ate healthily, avoided sugar and crap food - decided that I don't want to calorie count on NFD's as I am sick of "dieting". I feel like I have been trying to lose weight my entire adult life (except when I had DS2 who was a huge breastfeeder and I actually got skinny. Unheard of for me, and then I just gained it all when I weaned him.). My first diet was when I was about 10 years old!My parents always made disparaging comments on my weight, and still do. I have spent my life feeling guilty for eating too much/the wrong food/drinking alcohol etc,etc And yet, my mother was always baking, feeding us cake and biscuits, and giving us "treats" to mend any emotional woes. I just want to be a healthy weight and not have food issues anymore. I really hope this WOL will help me gain all that and allow me to be a healthy weight.

southeastdweller, I am looking forward to reading what you have to say about emotional eating. I know it is an issue for me.

I am fasting today. Going to try a LOF until dinner time, then I will have some seafood. I have some beautiful mixed seafood in the freezer, which would make a nice Laksa (sans the noodles) or perhaps bbqed with a big Thai flavoured salad. Mmmm, that sounds nice.

It is a big bonus that we don't have to pay to follow this WOE, though I am thinking about buying the Fast Diet cookbook. Does anyone have it? Is it any good? I would just like a bigger selection of recipes. I have seen the thread on here, but do like the idea of having it all in a book.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 29/12/2013 00:31

Poor you, SouthEast. Family can be absolutely wonderful or horrible. Sadly, you might be be happier avoiding yours in future. Sounds like they don't even feed you properly ffs.

Mum2
Don't cry about weight - crying uses up very few calories !
This WOL will enable you to weight in a healthy way. You just need to be patient and stick with it, to get to the size and shape you want.
Start tomorrow, keep checking in here on your FDs and we'll support you.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 29/12/2013 00:50

Hopeful There are many 5:2 cookbooks around and the Mimi Spencer one seems to be one of the best.
However, before spending your hard-earned, first check out our own RecipeThread where many folk from here have posted tasty meals that worked for them.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 29/12/2013 00:53

Oops, just saw you read the recipe thread.
Well, can you download a Kindle sample and see if you like it first ?

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 29/12/2013 06:58

I mainlined Deviant Rice Pud yesterday - rice pud with a spoon of pnut butter sprinkled with cinammon, whic is absolutely yum.

I also inhaled masses of everything else and I'm feeling full, so today will be an FD or a mini-FD.

Anyone else ?

BuggarMeGently · 29/12/2013 07:06

over heeere! Fast for me today, too! 300 calories at 8pm, to make it 24 hours.

What I'd LIKE to do, is read through ALL the thrrads...from the very first one! Can anyone post the link , as I can't find it! Eould be so grateful! I'm currently on psge 25 of this one...?

BetsyJingleBells · 29/12/2013 07:37

buggar I did get all the threads moved to the 5:2/fasting section so should be there somewhere - probably lurking on the last page. It wont have an identikit name or have the usual OP but it'll be the oldest thread in the section. Can't link as on my phone at the moment.

BuggarMeGently · 29/12/2013 07:41

BetsyJingleBells · 29/12/2013 07:54

Morning all, southeast sorry you've had a rubbish time. I'm sure you will enjoy your meals out today, have a great time.
bigchoc the additions to your rice pudding sound good may have to do that next time!
Well I'm feeling a little slimmer this morning after my mini fast. I skipped breakfast yesterday and had a hearty but low cal soup for a late lunch and then a small normal dinner and a banana for tea around 6.30, came in at just under 1000cal. Then today I will wait until 10.30 until breakfast so a 16hour fasting window, then follow with a mindful day ready for a normal fast tomorrow and Thursday. I will weigh in as normal on Friday morning.
We went away at Christmas so have absolutely zero treats in the house to tempt me or finish off! We are having guests for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day but as I'm cooking ill be in control and I'm not going to go over the top! Can't say the same for my booze consumption though! Will stick to Prosecco........

BuggarMeGently · 29/12/2013 08:06

Thank you so much

HorsePetal · 29/12/2013 09:10

Morning everyone - really inspired to join you all but have a question about what you can eat as part of your 500 cals. Does it matter what so long as its no more than 500?

Did someone mention a recipe thread?

BsshBossh · 29/12/2013 09:17

Welcome HorsePetal. The recipe thread is here:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/fasting_diet/1567814-5-2-Fast-day-recipe-ideas
Yes, it doesn't matter what you eat so long as it's no more than 500 cals total for the day (600 cals for guys). But many on here prefer to concentrate those calories on protein and veg as it makes them feel fuller.

BuggarMeGently · 29/12/2013 09:45

Right...off to read the threads from beginning to end...happy fasting peeps!

ChristmasPudding6 · 29/12/2013 09:48

Anyone seen to cover of the Sunday Times? Sorry I don't have a link but apparently the WHO want to recommend halving the recommended daily sugar intake from 10% of calories to 5%!!! Not surprising the publishing of the report is being held up by the big food giants who are being considered as bad as the tobacco companies in undermining all research which goes against their profit margins.

I see more newbies are arriving. Welcome! Sorry I can name check but I'm on my phone so can't flick back easily. Get stuck in and enjoy Grin

Not2bObvious · 29/12/2013 10:09

Welcome all the newbies! Bmg see you in a couple of weeks, roughly 33,000 entries across 33 threadsXmas Wink
Have to admit I had a sneak back since I'm only on this since about thread 16 in May. It's so funny looking back at August '12, very interesting. Even had a look at the recipes thread, I'll need it when I get home from my hols. Feel unbelievably bloated and haven't enjoyed my food the last few days. Eating lunch too late and as a result too full to enjoy dinner Sad I should go for a run, managed 2 so farbut my back/hips are achey so I'm loathe to push myself in case of injury. Maybe a brisk walk would be a good option. About 10 degrees and v sunny here so to be far, it would foolish to waste the opportunity. Right I talked myself into it! Runners on!

Breadandwine · 29/12/2013 10:50

Hi HorsePetal and welcome to you and all newcomers!Smile

Any others wondering whether to take the plunge? We'd love you to join us!

Papayasoup · 29/12/2013 10:53

Hello to all newcomers and everyone else! Sorry am on my phone and just caught up on 4 days worth of thread so can't quite remember who said what!
I'm definitely not 5:2ing at the moment and although lovely to be on holiday looking forward to January, too much bread, Wine and biscuits but I know it'll be sorted within a month of being back. That'll be the true comparison of what I've achieved in a year as I started after our Christmas break last year.

In Australia at mo and have to admit do think everyone looks larger than I remembered, and definitely not looking healthy. Has surprised me somewhat but maybe because I am more aware at the moment and I'm used to being so big compared to asians. Not to sound smug but it's been nice to feel slim-ish compared to those around me!

Well done to everyone who has fasted, maintained or lost and to everyone else we know what to do come the new year!

Sorry for double post, on a very slow connection here

Emmabryant123 · 29/12/2013 11:01

Morning all.
I braved the scales this morning and am 2.5 pounds heavier than this time last week I don't reckon it's all fat as I have just had a fry up and tea and not had a good ahem clear out
Tomorrow is a fast day but I don't have anything planned so I would like some tips to avoid going down and snacking on the chocs and treats still here.
Going to go bed late and have a lie in as hubby has offered to take care of the kids. So I plan to rise about eleven and eat about 5-6pm.
Going to pop to m and s and buy either a large carton of soup or some salad stuff. Also going to buy something for Thursdays fast day. As I'm back at work then. Have bought my self a flask so going to buy a low cal tin of soup for lunch Thursday and something for dinner...
How is everyone else doing?
Well done to losers and maintainers here wow after Xmas !!!
I've had toast, eggs, bacon and toms this morning.
At mums and its roast chicken but I may skip dessert.
Anyone else looking forward to tomorrow? But I am scared of the hunger lol
