Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Sod the New Year...i start tonight.

inamerrymuckingfuddle · 28/12/2013 17:41

Yay good for you mazzledazzle and buggarmegently Xmas Grin

Feeling a tad less wobbly of tum here after a 24 hours back home, won't get back into full on 5:2 until 6 jan but still aiming for swath...

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 28/12/2013 17:44

Welcome *MazzleDazzle. You don't need to pay for anything when the people on this thread are so knowledgeable (I am not including me in that!!)

BuggarMeGently · 28/12/2013 17:46
Blush
TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 28/12/2013 17:49

Toffee, you know you've just made me realise something really fundamental to me about this WOL

Yes, I know there are books about that you can buy but there are no subscriptions to this 'diet'.

I'd hazard a guess at 80% of the posters on this thread haven't had to invest anything apart from their own enthusiasm and then shared their knowledge for free.

It's just cost me for a new wardrobe though

ChristmasPudding6 · 28/12/2013 18:03

Bennett u r totally right. Not only do you save money on subscriptions, you don't HAVE to buy the book (I borrowed one from the library), the MM video is free online, there is an amazing source of info right here, and you save a fortune by NOT buying over priced and unhealthy and poor tasting 'diet' food. It really is a win win situation IMO.

Then there is eBay for selling old clothes, charity shops for interim and finally when u reach goal all the money you saved can be spent on new fab small/slimline clothes!!!! Yippee. Plus if next Xmas is your goal u can get clothes as presents ;)

ChristmasPudding6 · 28/12/2013 18:06

And today I have already managed a 20 hour LOF. I'm really chuffed as there were biscuits, crisps and all sorts around. I knew I wouldnt be happy with just one or two so went without. It'll probably be another hour or 2 before dinner is ready then I will eat what I want, but unlikely to be over 1000cals so That makes up for my Xmas gluttony. Tomorrow is a full on NFD before my usual Monday FD.

BsshBossh · 28/12/2013 18:09

Oh yes, eatriskier lost a bucketload in a tiny amount of time entirely on 5:2! So yep it's totally possible Buggar but she is a bit freakish Grin.

Well done for maintaining Bennet.

Welcome Mazzle.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 28/12/2013 18:10

I think that's the key to my reasonable success so far, you know

I started with the 30 shred years ago (still love it as a workout though) and yes some of the Jillian Michaels workouts are on youtube but you try following her wonder-diet plan without using your bank details - impossible!

All the diet clubs, WW, Rosemary Conley, SW etc all want you to pay them for their support, advice and even food!

Here we get all the support and friendship, alongside the most inane amazing chat, AND results

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 28/12/2013 18:18

Only a bit Bssh? WinkWink

Me and DH are both very freakish, as he seemed to lose at the same rate as me for a while. Though he is definitely slowing whereas I'm trying not have me metaphorical cake and eat it by doing 2 mini fasts a week, declaring alcohol calorie free and am still losing sometimes… But it is definitely possibly to lose in a short time on 5:2, though probably not common (and not great to aim for either - I did it by watching my calories but not reducing TDEE on NFDs which I know some people also do)

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 28/12/2013 18:18

Oh and welcome bugger and mazzle and everyone else I've likely forgotten.

BetsyJingleBells · 28/12/2013 18:34

Sugar addiction you say Mazzledazzle Oh, yes, I know all about that… Grin Blush

In January I'll be back to avoiding sugar 4 days a week (including 2 fast days) - it's made a HUGE difference to my sugar cravings. It's all gone a bit wonky what with the festivities but I'll be back on it in the new year.

5:2 will sort out your emotional eating as well -there's been lots of positive testimonials on these threads about that.

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 28/12/2013 19:05

This is turning into a default fast day mainly because I feel so sick I can't eat. So pissed off. Every Christmas I pick something up while visiting DH's family. At least he has escaped so far which means he can look after DC. I feel SO SICK!!! Sad Sad Sad

BuggarMeGently · 28/12/2013 19:21

FunnyBrew Thanks get well soon, poppet

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 28/12/2013 19:43

Thanks Buggar At least last year brought on a 6lb weight loss. This year seems on target to do the same!

TalkinPeace · 28/12/2013 19:44

(((((((( All the newcomers to the thread ))))))))))
you are all utterly welcome
please read the tips and hints thread as it is the summary of all teh little gems we have picked up over the past 18 months

also look at the Inspiration thread to see what can be done

and bear in mind that 5:2 is not a weight loss diet .... it is a way of eating to be a healthy size that happens to bring you down to and keeps you at that size

Be well. Enjoy the next 7 days in a mindful way.
I suspect most of us will be fasting on January 6th Xmas Smile

TalkinPeace · 28/12/2013 19:45

mttum
good to hear from you - come over for a natter on the maintainers thread Thanks

Mum2Fergus · 28/12/2013 21:46

(Peeks in for a look while no-one is watching)...

TalkinPeace · 28/12/2013 21:54

BOO *Mum2Fergus" How are you doing Xmas Grin

Southeastdweller · 28/12/2013 21:54

Hi mazzle, chubby and buggar. I wanted to say welcome and that two of the many great things about 5:2 are how practical and versatile it is, also that yes, the first day is hard but it gets better and you'll soon be encouraged by the weight coming off and all our support. Because this WOL is truly life-changing - please have a read on the inspirational thread when you get the chance.

I'm going to post something about emotional eating shortly...

Mum2Fergus · 28/12/2013 22:06

Bugger...been spotted! Lol evening Talkinpeace...I'm grand, thanks for asking, you?!

Just having a good read through the 'Read Me First' post before braving the scales lol ...

TalkinPeace · 28/12/2013 22:08

Mum2Fergus welcome to the crew .... don't forget to take a selfie and measure yourself because a lot of the changes are what we call Non Scale Victories

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 28/12/2013 22:08

Welcome Mum2Fergus,Mazzle, Chubby, Buggar

Some folks here have lost amazing amounts of weight - check the inspirations thread.
Others like me started with a normal BMI but want to optimise health.

So, something for everyone, lots of support for all and noone trousering fees on this WOL.
Why not start your 1st FD tomorrow and reduce the holiday damage ?

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 28/12/2013 22:12

Oh and take some measurements right now: waist, hips, thigh
Helps to see how far you have come. Also, sometimes on this WOL the scales stick but the inches go down.

BsshBossh · 28/12/2013 22:17

Welcome Mum2.

All newcomers please take a good "before" photo of yourself (you can hide it from everyone for now). When you reach goal you'll be glad you had an "after" shot to compare it with.

Also, definitely measure: under bust, over bust, around navel, around narrow part of waist, hips, each thigh etc etc. Keep measuring every few months - you'll be amazed.
