Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

turkey I've just ordered a hoop too - like rubbish I feel like I need to do something in the evenings or in the few spare minutes during the day - just KNOW my kids are going to be fascinated though and risk decapitation! Maybe shoould practice while they're in bed.

My H regularly gets on my nerves, we do not have a perfect marriage and he is a prize twunt but I am in the TiP camp as far as working on marriages, however my caveat is that ONLY works if both partners are willing to work at it. SOunds to me like mrF is not doing much on that front.

MrsF you know we are all here for you if and when you need help emotionally.

turkey and whoeever else was asking somewhere? It was me asking about periods, mine keep catching me out as they are coming earlier and earlier and are veeeery light, annoyingly light. Theya re also lasting for longer than they used to. But in an annoying 'not really having a proper period but lets make it last for 8 days' kind of way! Was always regular as clockwork before dd and between dd and ds.

Well done everyone on all your NSV's! This thread is belting along like the last one! Leave it for 5 mins and you've got 3 pages to catch up on! Xmas Smile

rubbishfamily333 · 06/12/2013 22:07

annie what hoop did you order?

I have got jillian michaels shred, I did it once for 11 days in a row and lost 2 inches off my hips and 1-2 inches off my waist then stopped Sad

I will start it again in the next few days I think, and I might order some other jillian michael dvds, any recommendations? I hate doing dvds at home and prefer to be in a class, but its not possible at the moment so dvd's it is.

annielewis · 06/12/2013 22:25

Wow - rubbish thats impressive inch loss! I've got JM dvds but find that my toddlers cannot resist clambering all over me if I try and do then during the day so haven't done them for ages. Am also a bit scared about the old pelvic floor after other comments on here (can't remember who now)

I don't know how to link but its the same one that Turkey linked to up thread a bit - the one with out the 'massaging' bumps of torture... :)

rubbishfamily333 · 06/12/2013 22:37

I know it was very impressive, but I havnt managed to do it again since then, my hips were 40 inches and went to 38 inches. Also my belly and thighs looked so much better. I just find it so hard to keep it up.

My dd used to jump all over me when she was younger, she is 6 now and if I do it when she is there she tried to do it and makes me laugh Xmas Grin

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 06/12/2013 23:24

AnnieL my twin gift to you.... to do a link....

bring up the web page you want to show

copy the address from the bar at top of screen

where you want to put your link put then without space paste your link then space then put whatever word you want to be your link i.e THIS then without space again.

The instructions are under message box. I didn't have clue at first! Then tried it and worked! If in doubt preview first to check it works.

Hope that makes sense!

As far as the working things out goes. Yes it does take two. I have not given up easily. My parents had horrendous divorce and still make our lives hell, so I have always wanted to give my dd the opposite of what I had.

But he doesn't seem to want to. It's carry on as we are or nothing at all as far as he is concerned. I love him, but I need more. He is nice guy and we are great friends but I can't live the kind of relationship we have for rest of lives. I'm too young and I just want to feel loved!

If I didn't love him, or hadn't wanted us to work so much, I would've given up and walked away years ago. I discovered he was having an affair when I was pg with dd. The betrayal of all the things that went on, besides the 'deed' itself took so much to get over. It was definitely one of the major factors in my depression.
My dad cheated on my mum throughout their marriage. I was wary of having knee jerk reaction and kicking him out, just to avoid repeating the same mistakes as mum did, in putting up with it. So I worked very bloody hard at not making it the be all and end all. I believed him when he said it was biggest mistake of his life and when he swore his undying love to me. I won't say I got over it easily or quickly, but I certainly tried my hardest to move on and not hold it over him.

Now we are a million miles from that, but sadly going nowhere apparently!

I'm gutted. Not because he's perfect, or because I don't think I deserve better. But because I do love him so much and thought he was it! I was prepared for life's ups and downs and prepared to work at us over the years. But what am I supposed to do now?

I feel like I'm asking for the earth, yet not asking for much all at the same time!

Sorry! Bloody emotional end of period hormone attack! Just felt like I wanted to point out I am not doing this lightly!

Oh and do you know what AnnieL - now I think about it, my period lasting slightly longer too!

Tangent slightly! Xmas Grin

I was thinking about doing the squat challenge. I just googled it and came across a miserable article saying squats alone won't be very beneficial and if you are doing so many squats it will probably be with poor form Hmm

annielewis · 07/12/2013 01:00

God turkey this is getting spooky now, I'm in similar boat to you, caught H going on escort sites (booking appointments) while pg with dc2. Have had over a year of therapy to work through things and are not out of the woods yet. I wasn't implying you'd given up easily, no one goes into a long term relationship especially when kids are involved thinking they're going to be a single parent. It takes a huge amount of guts and strength to not 'settle' and to stand up for what you deserve (that includes love).

Brain has run out of function but didn't want to read and run, the thread will have motored along by morning!!!

Back to hula hooping, are you following a DVD or anything or are you just going to have a go? Did you order already? Xx

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 07/12/2013 01:09

rubbish when I started 5:2 I was on heavy painkillers to cope with my SI joint problem. 5:2 lost me some weight and made everything a little better, so I started the 30 day squat challenge (with some trepidation I may add). It was phenomenal. If nothing other than the feeling of achievement it gives. But it definitely improved my bum.

I may be here first, but as tips behest, there is a pic of me in my Xmas part outfit up. This outfit will be worn out for another 2 Fridays at least, so come say hi if you recognise me Xmas Wink

annielewis · 07/12/2013 01:15

rubbish I tried it before, there will always be people going on about 'form' wtc. Have you watched any of the you tube clips about how to do it! That helped me a lot, and watching yourself in a mirror or doing it by a bed/chair/wall.

BsshBossh · 07/12/2013 06:11

(((( Turkey ))))

Eatriskier I can't access your photo, can you provide direct link?

BsshBossh · 07/12/2013 06:13

rubbish my periods have pretty much stayed the same in terms of regularity. They've become heavier during "peak days" but I put that more down to age (43) and heading towards peri-meno.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 07/12/2013 06:41

Rubbish Article sounds daft.

Squats are an excellent exercise for tightening bum and thighs, also for maintaining bone density. Since they use big muscle groups, you can burn quite a few calories too.
Squats automatically use some tum muscles, so also tone abs a bit.

Don't worry too much about form, unless you get pain in knees or back (if so, you probably just need to remember to keep weight on your heels)

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 07/12/2013 06:42

Dammit - forgot about name changing. Should be visible now.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 07/12/2013 07:10

:-O

Eat I can hardly believe you're the same person (your smile gives you away though)

amazing, thank you for sharing

Baloostika · 07/12/2013 07:57

Welcome MariaRossa and all the de lurkers, there so much to gain from being here.
Eat: u look wonderful, you've really done well for yourself.
How are we all doing?

dingdongduckyfuzz · 07/12/2013 08:02

eat you look gorgeous!

Can't help with the relationship stuff really, but supportive thoughts and unmn hugs to MrsF, Turkey, Annie and anyone else having and crap time of it.

My periods are a bit weird at the mom, but like bssh I'm putting that down to being 43!

Despite being certain I wouldn't lose this week, due to totm (when I can gain half a stone) I appear to be 2lbs down Xmas Shock - I wasn't going to weigh at all but clothes were feeling much looser. Will now bloat up over the weekend but but I know its not 'real'!

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 07/12/2013 08:10

Thank you all

bennet DD has the exact same smile too, its freaky though very sweet.

rubbish my periods are all over the place but then I've had the mirena put in so I put it down to that rather than 5:2

BsshBossh · 07/12/2013 08:39

Eatriskier gorgeous dress and I love your hair!

BsshBossh · 07/12/2013 08:42

ducky well done on the loss. I was pleasantly surprised by losing during TOM week too.

rubbishfamily333 · 07/12/2013 09:14

Morning all

Eatriskier - I can't see your photo as I'm on my phone but will have a look later Grin

Well I think for now i may start with hula hooping and squat challenge, anyone want to join me??? Maybe we could check in to make sure we have done it all?

I feel like jillian will damage my ankle at the moment Hmm but I could do with some chest flys and press ups. Last time I fancied press ups I didn't warm up before and my shoulder was hurting for days. Confused

I sound like a real wimp Grin I'm much better in classes than at home.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 07/12/2013 09:43

AnnieL - I have ordered the non nobbly one on my link. 2.5lb I think. Should be here by mon hopefully.

Rubbish I have to big up the squats too. I have always been fortunate enough to have fairly compact bum (my prob areas are more apple) but it was getting bit limp! Nothing more aging than a saggy bott. Plus all that sort if stuff helps for supporting back.

I have dodgy back on/off. I agree with all comments that if done correctly (I am one who also stands in front of mirror) then it doesn't hurt/cause aggravation. Is definitely starting to work too.

I am with you for a squat/hula challenge. I like the idea of having a few simple things to try. JM is not for me yet either. Am afraid of ripping out my pelvic floor Xmas Grin

DuckyF That is bloody brill!!!! I had similar last week. 2 lb loss just as period started so was over moon. I had felt massively bloated too and was expecting maintain or gain. Just goes to show that our insides can still feel the same even though we're shrinking overall.

I finished yesterday on drinks only. Bouillon and milky water on top of 3 coffees. Did have 2 lrg sqs of choc too in evening. But still under 250. Find it easier than eating.

Can't wait to weigh in later - hope its not a kick in the wotsit!

Am off to check out EatRisky!

Thanks for kind words Thanks. Again! Am so not looking for sympathy. I think years of bottling it all up just bubbles over sometimes. Need to get out of habit of talking on here though - I hate feeling afterwards of 'I killed that conversation!' 'Tumbleweed alert!!' Lol Xmas Grin

Truly - you look gorge!!!! I agree your hair is lovely and really suits you, looks fab. You must feel great!

Can't wait to see all the other pics now. Xmas Grin
