Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Turkey - can you link to your hula hoop? I could hoop for an hour easily but my hoop is oddly shaped and hurts the next day if I've done too much so I'm building up at the moment.

I've just downloaded the app for the squat challenge and press up challenge.

I figured I could do the press ups and squats in the morning and hula in the evening.

If we can get a few others to sign up with us maybe I will start a hula/squat/press up challenge thread Grin

And Turkey - don't worry about tumbleweed, this is the most supportive thread on here and gaining control over eating is affected by everything which includes husbands, sick dc, work problems so we discuss it all Wink

annielewis · 07/12/2013 10:09

Ooh I'm definitely in for the hooping squatting challenge!!! Perfect timing as hoop should arrive today. Funny that we are all a bit scared if JM! I need my pelvic floor more than I need to be skinny!! :)

When shall we start it?

turkey I like reading your posts, you don't tumbleweed the thread don't worry! And lots of people do epic long rambly posts every now and again, it's what makes this post so personal and supportive! :)

rubbishfamily333 · 07/12/2013 10:11

I am starting today Grin I will start a thread in the exercise section which is dedicated to our challenge.

And anyone that hasn't got their hoop yet can start with the squats until the hoop comes??

Papayasoup · 07/12/2013 10:22

eatrisky you look amazing!!!

I don't have a hula hoop but I'm up for the squat challenge! Just need to figure out what it consists of exactly!

I've got no Christmas posh dos but will try and take a pic and post. I nothing else to be a reminder during my Christmas holidays that I don't want to feel like last year.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 07/12/2013 10:25

I am very up for challenge!!

Maybe we could report in our daily efforts. I know we will all have good days and can't be arsed bad days, but it is the motivation of others and having to keep confessing results that gives the push needed!

ordered this one

To be honest I was in bit of hurry so could've done better maybe. I have since been on eBay and they have loads on there, different styles, sizes, weights and prices. Could prob get a really good deal if mooched around but I just wanted it done!

eat you look stunning! What a difference from the 1st pic. Hope you really enjoy the nights out. Back from my trip, ended up in a wine & crisp munchathon when I got home but not too bad in the scheme of things, hours of walking yesterday. Scales showing about a 2.4 gain this morning but that's, shall we say excess baggage that'll be shed soon enough if you catch my drift. Doing a mini fast today in the form of a 16:8 as I have a big lunch with friends tomorrow.
Starting to feel v xmassy, will spend the rest of the day cleaning/prepping food but right now it's a cup of tea and an episode if extreme weightloss with Chris Powell, pwoar Xmas Wink Anyone else fasting today?

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 07/12/2013 11:52

SQUAT CHALLENGE

What is important, when just doing bodyweight, is to go very deep if possible, so thighs are parallel to the floor, rather than doing a huge number of easy "downwards bobs" which are not very effective.

We do a squat Tabata at the end of training sometimes (the alternatives are press-ups or burpees):

20 secs of deep squats
10secs rest

This is a set. We rinse & repeat to do 8 sets, but you can build up gradually.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 07/12/2013 11:54

I think bodyweight is best in this type of challenge, rather than seeing who can lift the heaviest barbell.

BetsyJingleBells · 07/12/2013 12:34

I am so up for the squat challenge! I have reinstated the bedroom mirror so the full horrors of porridge arse and emblazoned on my retinas. Something must be done!

5:2 postergirl eatriskier - Looking FABULOUS from top to toe, absolutely stunning.

peplum41 · 07/12/2013 12:38

turkey your posts either have me chuckling or are so wretched I feel at a loss to comment. I cant compete with your humour, unlike bcf, and when you've just posted something personal I'm reluctant to just come on here cheerily oblivious:"I've just lost 3lbs" (which would be a lie because I haven't). I hadn't realised you felt you brought the whole thing grinding to a hault. Tumbleweed!! Another turkey classic. And on the subject of dp, glad you clarified the bit about him cheating, it did sound as though you were letting a good one go.. til that! Even the bible says you don't have to forgive that. I know this might sound silly, but I wish Id known about 5:2 when my ex left me for the slapper over the road, especially when he said I would never find anybody else because I was fat and spotty. Well he was wrong, I did and he's lovely.(11 year anniversary soon).
But it would've been better for emotional state if I hadn't become so dependent on food and drink, especially as the weight just piled on.

eat wolf whistles all round.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 07/12/2013 13:17

Hi Peplum Thanks! Tbh there is a lot more to it all which is precisely why I need to stop posting about it, as it would be impossible to explain a 12 yr relationship! He is good, in that he isn't a complete wanker. Is he a 'good one' though?? Depends on what your definition of love is. Hence my original comment/question. Was/am confused about what is achievable in any longterm relationship. All I know is all around me in RL, online, media, I see people with lots of what we are missing. And I'm not asking the earth here!

And I'm not letting him go. We are letting each other go because he wants a housemate/company and I want to be in love and have somebody in love with me. We've been at stale mate for few years. He had never admitted his feelings until I pushed for counselling etc. He doesn't want to try any of that. So all that's left is for me to compromise, or us to split.

As for cheerily oblivious posts. Xmas Grin Please don't ever worry! That is very nature of these kinds of threads isn't it. And I would rather drop my tumbleweed comment and everyone carry on as normal than anyone ever feel hesitant to be themselves. It may sound dire in my world sometimes but I realise I am not the only person on the planet/thread so I don't expect everyone to have read/care/comment give a shit about my posts.Xmas Grin

Hah! Betsy Porridge arse!! Cracks me up every time Xmas Grin

I have especially evil mirrors in this house. One particularly nasty bastard in the bedroom.

Usually my porridge tummy that I hate sight of.

Let's Pummel the Porridge wherever it may reside! Xmas Grin

Mine is getting smacked about with my new hoop as soon as arrives!

Just weighed in! Another pound down Woohoo!!!!!

Not sure I'll make it to the tens for Xmas but I'm much closer. Am loving the non food under 250 cal fd I've done this week. Although NND went out of window on choc front! Back in the game next wk though. Plus 4:3! Am feeling smaller too which doesn't always come with loss.

Turkey FlowersBrewCakeWine

YOU and your DD deserve to live a full and happy life. It is too long to be unhappy. Do what is right for YOU and it will be right for your DD too.

eat WOW!!

My TOTM is different too - put down to age - as I feel down on the first and last days of the loss as opposed to the one day in the week before I used to get.

I got out my tape measure this morning and I was Shock and Grin

July 2012 before Diet Chefing for 3 months and 5:2 since Aug 2013

chest 106cm now 87cm.
waist 98cm now 79cm.
thigh 62cm now 55cm.

Yesterday I was 11 stone 3lbs. Lowest I have been since having dc3 in 2005. One stone to go at least. Only 1lb overweight!! Grin.

Not2bObvious · 07/12/2013 13:41

Toffee that is amazing, super well done, that's an immense cm loss. I am raging I didn't do a proper measure, although I did get my metabolic ages thing done earlier this year. I was...gulp...53. Ok, no big deal and no offence to anyone in their 50's but I was 38 at the time. It shook me. Not enough to get my weight down until I started 5:2 though! So glad I did

peplum41 · 07/12/2013 14:02

Always worth getting tape measure out toffee, that's some fine shrinkage, esp round your waist.

turkey my disaster zone is my waist. Actually, my waist I can live with its the bumbag that sits beneath, flopping over the top of me knickers. Would be very interested to know if your hula hoop fixes that. Did you go for the smooth boy or the nobbley?

BetsyJingleBells · 07/12/2013 14:05

Loving those statsToffee - fantastic, well done you!

I've been pummelling the arse porridge on my bicycle saddle (and currently the sofa) to no avail - going to have to squish it into shape with squats for sure. I'll bring on the buttache while you hone by hoop!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 07/12/2013 14:18

I have reinstated the bedroom mirror so the full horrors of porridge arse and emblazoned on my retinas. Something must be done!

Hahaha! That really does make me laugh. Every word tickles me each time I read it!

I am in bath. Got in and water scalding as us girls like it! As I was hugging my knees to my chest while I adjusted to temperature change from freezing to boiled alive - I couldn't help but notice my shoulders. There's less of them! Still two obviously Xmas Grin - I haven't lost an actual joint - but much less meaty! I'm calling it a NSV!

To go with lying in bed this morning .... Was stretching. I find stretching esp arms above head, really starts to wake up the innards if you get me, and I was desperate to move things along pre weigh in, but as I was doing it I couldn't stop thinking Oooh ribs! Ribby me! and... feel my little tummy! Was lovely, though dd who was next to me did ask with raised eyebrow 'Mummy why are you stroking yourself' Xmas Grin - that just made me feel desperate and too lonely! Xmas Grin Xmas Grin

OP posts:
Papayasoup · 07/12/2013 14:27

toffee those are amazing cm losses, well done! Especially considering all the control you have taken back.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 07/12/2013 14:28

Peplum I've got one of those bumbags!! Did you get it same place as me Xmas Wink

I went for smooth one. It's padded allegedly. Am actually looking forward to some bruising. I definitely think it will pummel fat. Apart from reviews commenting on it, I'm thinking... if massage is good for loosening fat then surely a hula hoop bouncing off the blub will have some effect??

Yeah Betsy let's get violent with the flab!!!!! Sounds like a new group of sadistic sag slayers is forming! Must work on name though - that's all I got in a hurry Xmas Grin

Toffee those measurements are amazing! I get so excited hearing things like that. I measured myself last year for a dress fitting. Other than that I have no idea! Need to find that scrap of paper!!!

OP posts:
ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 07/12/2013 14:33

Grin Thank you.

I hope it gives hope to anyone who started like me - though obviously won't be as bad - who just couldn't get my head around what I had to do and how I was going to cope going without meals for hours and panicked at the first sign of hungry, but who the other day managed a 35 hour fast with unbelievable ease Grin.

Papayasoup · 07/12/2013 14:33

turkey you dd has made me chuckle! But I agree it's great to feel some rib and I remember how surprised I was when I felt a hip bone when lying down. Of course that doesn't happen on a Sunday so much after a weekend of eating or if I'm actually standing up. But I tell myself that is a good thing Xmas Grin

MrsFlorrick · 07/12/2013 14:33

Eatriskier!! Wow! You look amazing!! You're stunning in the red and black lace dress. Just incredible. And you look tiny! So slim. Congratulations my friend. Smile

Turkey (((((hugs))))). Don't feel like that! I am
The worldst worst for posting loads of personal crap about myself and H. Afterwards I think. Oh no it's supposed to be a diet/way of eating support thread.
BUT it's a SUPPORT THREAD! And support is what you get here.
Because Turkey, these other folk here realise that over eating/biscuit binges/choc frenzies happen for loads of different reasons. And for some of us its relationships/ family which have made us dive into the snacks.

So please keep on posting. It's not tumbleweed. We're all happy to hear from you anytime.

Plenty of kind people here to offer support and advice.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 07/12/2013 14:34

Those losses aren't since August I hasten to clarify!

HardOutHereForATitch · 07/12/2013 15:04

Wow, this thread moves at the speed of light! Glad to see how supportive of each other and lovely you all are :)

Today is my first fast day, I'm playing it by ear so far, ate my advent calendar choc (had to!) and have had an options hot chocolate with semi skimmed, which I hadn't planned on but gosh, it is freezing at work!

Think I'll make today a 500/600 cals fast with a focus on liquids only but there's a friend's flatwarming party tonight I'd completely forgotten about. Not a big drinker by any means but can't refuse a teeny tiny mulled cider.

It's so great reading about the amazing success stories here. Exercise is something I need to get into in a big way, used to be a runner but haven't worked out for almost 2 years now Blush

Talkinpeace · 07/12/2013 15:38

Eatriskier
You look FANTASTIC ; you are definitely the poster girl for the butterfly emerging from the chrysalis.

Toffeesponge
That size reduction is deeply impressive and the fact that you are enjoying the process rather than resenting every day - as is the case with a 'normal' diet is even better

Turkey/cuckoo, Annie, MrsFlorrick and anybody else whose marriages are on the shaky side
Please remember that this thread is exactly the right place to analyse those issues
because weight gain / loss is so utterly tied up with how you feel about yourself and those around you that it is impossible to sort one without dealing with the other.
BUT
Taking control of a major aspect of your life : food and your relationship with it
will give you the tools to take control of other parts : work / kids / husbands money etc

I admit, I'm lucky. I'm married to the world's tallest 7 year old and like nothing more than to spend time with him. But its taken work and compromise and time.
