Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Eatriskier. I see. That's good to know. Perhaps it really will help with that last bit.

Sorry Whim. I bow to your senior hooping experience!

Eatriskier. It's funny JM is about the only thing I can fit into my lifestyle which is why I started it. I used to swim pre DC but I just cannot find the time now and going at night when dH comes home and DC are in bed means its so late I can't sleep afterwards and my legs are restless all night.

The JM workouts (when using 7lbs weights) saw me drop over a dress size without dropping any weight at all. It was a lovely NSV but also frustrating as I had over a month of weightloss stall but I wore smaller clothes until I could wear most of my old wardrobe again. And now I have started losing again. Obviously plateau on the muscle front Grin

mummyof2girlsx · 25/10/2013 10:36

Good Morning all!

Lucy hope your daughter is feeling better, its scary when they hurt themselves like that. My 7yo DD went right over the handlebars on her bike last weekend and had some nasty cuts and bruises.....right in time for school photos!

I fasted yesterday and attempting another today to try to undo my greediness earlier in the week!

Enjoy your Friday everyone Smile

BetsyBell · 25/10/2013 11:24

eatsriskier bigchoc I'm very lucky in that I'm predisposed to small waist so I don't need hooping for that - just wondered if it worked for others. I imagine it's got to do a lot of good for core strength and hip flexibility which always a good thing.

I have found that IF eats into the fat reserve hanging round my thighs which just feels like a miracle and means trousers are a tad less tricky than they were (small waist + large thighs = trouser sizing nightmare). So really, I'm just (very slowly) trying to shift a few more pounds to get rid of that but at the same time realise that without exercise and toning it's all going to stay wobbly no matter how much fat I shift!

I don't get my usual morning exercise slot on a Friday so must make an effort to do some upper body work this evening I think.

Morning all! Can I de-lurk and join you please?

Saw the programme last year, thought that's a good idea then promptly forgot about it until very recently! Then started reading - you all like to talk alot!

So... weighed/measured/calculated this Monday and fasted Monday (450kcal) and Wednesday (

Dotty342kids · 25/10/2013 12:11

Morning all!

wrigglebum, nope, am right handed so no idea why I can only hoop in a clockwise direction Grin. I'm just happy I can do it full stop (although it falls down regularly).
I don't know if it's making huge difference yet although did go down another belt notch yesterday so maybe it is!
Saw 10st 4lbs again this morning after sticking at 10st 6 for the last two weeks since I last saw it! So that's nice. Am gleefully having a jam donut for lunch now Grin

eatriskier your losses are amazing, as are BsshBossh's, am sure we're due some updated photos soon!

BsshBossh · 25/10/2013 12:13

MrsF coooeeee
lucy ((((hugs)))) and Thanks to you and your little one. What a brave wee one your DD is.
BBE welcome!

All you Shredders and weight lifters - weights are a wonderful thing. Building muscle must definitely have raised my BMR because I seem to be able to eat more than calculators/people have expected and still lose weight. Try and lift weights and build muscle everyone who can - especially if you enjoy food.

Dotty342kids · 25/10/2013 13:07

Yay, I just hooped my way through an entire episode of Strictly - ITT, so that's about 27 mins I reckon. Definite progress Grin

wrigglebum · 25/10/2013 13:34

Go Dotty- now to work on doing that the other way! I'm going to hoop this lunchtime when I've done a bit of housework. I'm still sore from workout yesterday and fancy something a little bit less sweaty today than my usual Jillian Michaels workouts. The great thing about hooping is that it's fun, so you don't feel like you're working out. I like that I can do it in front of the tv and I vary how I hoop (side to side hips or back and forth, legs hip width or closer etc) to change the muscles it targets. It does seem to have helped my core, but I'm doing lots of other exercises so hard to say what's doing what. I'd definitely recommend it as an addition to whatever people are doing. MIL was so impressed with my hoop she's getting her own! Someone said to me today there was something about hooping on the One Show- anyone see it?

Bssh- agree re weights. I don't do heavy lifting, and I can't use heavy weights yet when I shred but strength training is definitely making a difference. I've lost another couple of pounds without trying recently and I think it's thanks to weights. I can't be bothered with cardio workouts- I walk around 3-5 miles most days anyway, and the strength workouts I do get me working up a sweat and heart rate high so I'll stick with what gives me more bang for my buck. I used to despair at the gym whenever I used to see the types who would drive to the gym to spend an hour chatting to their mates on the recumbent bicycles not even breaking a sweat. What a waste of time! I need to make myself a list of a few exercises I can do with my weights in front of the tv as that will mean I squeeze a bit more exercise in. Plus I need to work on doing proper push-ups!

Winge alert- I'm getting annoyed with people saying things like 'oh don't lose any more', 'are you sure you haven't lost too much', 'you're getting too skinny' etc. My BMI is 21 ffs so I'm hardly emaciated! I'm not really aiming to lose more but if it happened I wouldn't be worried. I would have to lose over another stone to be 'underweight'.

Yummy lunch- fried egg, black pudding and tomatoes. Followed by too much homemade spiced apple cake. Delicious! Think I might have baked Camembert tonight for tea then more cake Grin- don't want it to go stale after all.

annielewis · 25/10/2013 13:34

fasting today and am hungry!!! Have discovered Bouillion powder though which is doing the trick at the moment! Good luck any other fasters!!

Talkinpeace · 25/10/2013 14:01

The only people you should listen to if they say you are too thin are people even thinner than you.
Seriously, I have some lovely friends at the gym who are incredibly lean and toned. When they say I've lost too much I listen.
As most other people are either jealous or hiding from themselves.

Weighed in today and back down to 8st 12 lb - target is 8 1/2 before Christmas - and despite being a lot lighter than many, because my frame is narrow, I can still pinch several inches around my waist - no trim BetsyBell waist for me!

Did y'all see the AIBU thread this week where two lovely ladies posted that they had both got pregnant while doing 5:2 Grin

AtchooUhOh · 25/10/2013 14:13

Ok so weigh in results and as promised pelvic update...

Weight = 11.10 - maintained. Tbh ok with that as feeling bloated (pmt) thought would be worse.

Pelvic Floor Reliability =
Mid flow pause: improved.
Laugh: minor and only if extremely full bladder.
Sneeze: controllable unless is stealth sneeze.
Cough: with legs slightly crossed also controllable.
Number of pants changed today: Just the one so far.

Verdict .... On the mend. Hurrah!!!!

Internet/Wifi status: Still broken and waiting for bloody router. Grrrrrrrr! Angry

Not2bObvious · 25/10/2013 15:03

Quick check in before my weekend away. Aborted fast yesterday sadly. Been a rubbish few days, very stressed and as a result ate my way thru it. But I managed a 16:8 today and a 3 mile run this morning, 2 good steps back on the road to skinny'vil Wink
Hope everyone's doing great, no time for a good read thru, see some pelvic talk at the glance (squeeze!) and mentions of losses, congrats to all and have a lovely weekend y'all.

wrigglebum · 25/10/2013 15:05

Good tip thanks tip! Yes, it's only people bigger than me who say it. I think people get used to seeing you one way and it's a shock when you make big changes. I've lost nearly 2 stone since April, I was just edging into overweight then and a size 14. Now an 8-12 depending on shop. There is certainly a bit more flab that could do with toning up but it will happen in time. I'm hoping that by next summer I'll be confident in summer clothes with nicely toned arms to show off.

I feel so much better too- lots more energy and bounce despite the crap sleep I get thanks to ds2!

Thank you all on this thread for the support- I think without all the support and reassurance on here I couldn't have managed it.

annielewis · 25/10/2013 15:19

Hi all, just wondered what is a 16:8??

Am munching some cucumber now to take the edge off, I know it probably classes as snacking but I am not sure i'll make it to dinner time!!!!

Talkinpeace · 25/10/2013 15:21

Hi annielewis
basically its skipping breakfast!
properly its eating all of your food for a day within an 8 hour window and thus having a 16 hour 'mini fast' - restricted calorie or not

great for on holiday or when tired or when generally CBA to do a full fast Grin

annielewis · 25/10/2013 15:32

Ahh - so not 500 cal day then?? Do you still eat 3 meals or just skip breakfast and then have lunch and dinner? SOunds good for when can't do a whole FD!

Talkinpeace · 25/10/2013 15:47

I always skip breakfast, always have
but I tend to do 16:8 on NFD week days - so I come out at around 800-1000 calories (have a low TDEE) leaving room for weekend booze Grin

Preciousdaisybear · 25/10/2013 16:05

Down to 12st and so happy. I love this woe (even if I still haven't opened JM yet).

rubbishfamily333 · 25/10/2013 16:07

Well I'm feeling rubbish today, I just went shopping for winter boots, and saw a pair I loved, they were uggs but leather and looked like riding boots, they were too tight on my calves ConfusedConfusedConfused thy are so nice! I need to loose atleast a stone and quick.

What is the quickest way to loose weight when doing 5:2 starting Monday for definite!

Talkinpeace · 25/10/2013 16:10

rubbishfamily
tight on the calves is best sorted with lots of lunges and squats to make your leg muscles more dense - and thus slimmer.

Don't go overboard.
If you really want fast results, calculate your TDEE at your ideal weight, sedentary
and try to keep within that four days a week, two days of 500 and one day to enjoy life

BigChocFrenzy · 25/10/2013 16:19

Pig alert ! (we really need a pig smilicon on this thread) Today was supposed to be a generous 120% tdee NFD between Thursday & Saturday FDs.
BUT, due to social complexity and being a woman who can't say "No thanks, I've just eaten" to delicious food, I ate 2 large lunches within 10 mins of each other

BlushBlush
I then compounded this gluttony by scoffing a 100g choc bar which was sitting on my desk and making "eat me" noises.
Blush
However, that was really Bssh's fault, because I was drooling over her delicious baked potato with beans and cheese Grin
Seriously woman, learn some flaming self-control.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/10/2013 16:19

Addressing myself re self-control, of course !

BigChocFrenzy · 25/10/2013 16:25

Lifting I think lifting, like all exercise, is really beneficial for health or maintaining weight, not so much losing weight.
BTW: I have been criticised for being too muscular, especially by older relatives, but I ignore them. I love lifting and I gain muscle easily, just by smiling at a big friendly barbell.

BetsyBell · 25/10/2013 16:29

achoouhuo Good to hear your pelvic floor exercises are working

CLENCH!!!
