The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hello all.
I haven't fasted for a week and can really notice it. I feel so blobby. My muffin top is back and I just feel squeezed in my jeans. Its mainly because, as well as not fasting, I've been eating a lot of cake and cr** as its been DD's birthday. And because I've been making cakes, filling party bags etc, I haven't had a chance to exercise. Its horrible. Last week, I was feeling slinky and on my way to gorgeous, now I feel like Mr Blobby. I attempted a FD on Monday and got through to about 4pm when I started to feel dreadful, came on here to post, saw someone mention Auntie Flo and thought "oooh" so went off & scoffed a bar of chocolate and some biscuits and began to feel better. At that time, I just need chocolate and carbs.

I'll be doing a FD tomorrow but am a bit nervous that I'll suffer a sugar crash all day.

Bssh - your photos are continuing to inspire me.

BsshBossh · 24/10/2013 22:17

Thank you Covered :)

Itsaboatjack · 24/10/2013 23:09

Thanks for all your good wishes. Dh was not upset that I'd forgotten, in fact I would almost go so far as to say he was gleeful that he has something to tease me about for years to come.

Dotty lunch was lovely. We don't go out to fancy places very often so maybe it was in my subconscious when I booked it for this day? If anyone is looking for a really yummy Indian next time they are in London I can highly recommend Gymkhana on Albemarle St, W1.

BigChoc I have taken your advice and put it in iPhone.

AtchooUhOh · 24/10/2013 23:12

Annie I don't know how early you want or how skinny you want but as a 'for example' for you, or anyone else just starting, my experience is...
Been doing 5:2 for 6 weeks. Weigh day tmw for this week, but at last wks weigh in have lost 9lbs. The first 2 wks were most challenging but since then it just gets easier/feels more natural. Miss it when not doing it. Feel so much more in touch with stomach and real hunger.

.....but the real benefits are... Wow! I really FEEL slimmer and I def look a LOT slimmer than scales reflect. I have chubby face, am prone to extra chins and suffer terrible bloat and fluid retention. All of which have improved dramatically since starting this woe. And I get such a high and motivation from feeling more like the old slim me. I feel all the long forgotten benefits of being slim - confidence etc, less desire to eat for sake of it, more of a desire to look after myself, and much more energetic. Hair falling out less, eyes brighter, skin clearer, sleep better, various recurring ailments clearing/cleared up. And I feel in control of myself again. It is such a cycle of never ending benefits.

So I would say the numbers on scales do not do the results you see/feel justice. In my experience! I know we're all diff but I also know I am not alone in my experience of 5:2.

Sorry for gush but been building up for weeks! I haven't felt this happy about myself for ages, and I've actually got loads of crap on plate at mo too, which makes it even more of a surprise to feel so good!

AtchooUhOh · 24/10/2013 23:18

Fd complete. Liquid day. Chicken and bacon salad at 9. Weigh in tmw!! Am feeling the claws of the dreaded pmt starting to take a hold so won't be surprised to maintain/gain. Just have to keep perspective and wait for to pass!

BsshBossh · 24/10/2013 23:24

Lovely inspirational post Atchoo Thanks. Gush away :)

AtchooUhOh · 24/10/2013 23:25

P.s Annie I started at 12.6. Target weight 8 and half to start. Am 5'2, 35 yrs old. If any of that helps. Current weight 11.10 ...... errr think I've missed a week!? That's 10lb loss!
See - it just keeps giving!! Grin

MrsFlorrick · 24/10/2013 23:27

Evening all!

Sorry I've been a bit lax about posting of late.

We've had PILs here for the last week. They are both in their 80s and visit revolves around meals and snacks (its am age thing). I've cooked constantly for a week (exhausted). I do love PILs they are so nice. Sadly they've made me over eat. Not too bad. Exceeded tDEE a bit but not hideously so.

I did soooo well yesterday and today. I've started carb cycling along with 5:2 and 16:8. Ie two days a week is low carb. It's worked really well. So yesterday and today were my LC days. And at 10pm I had a glass of mulled wine and a packet of ready salted crisps. What an idiot! That's LC day oot the windy.
Argh.

Never mind. Fasting tomorrow I already have my soups in the fridge so nothing should steer me off course.

It's funny when PILs were here I had days where I felt I was stuffing myself. And yet I ate 1900 cals. (Current TDEE at current weight set at no exercise is 2030). Once upon a time, stuffing myself could have easily been 3000 to 4000 cals. Scary isn't it!!! Shock

PILs visit damage is just 2 lbs and one lbs was off again this morning. Still I need to stick to the plan.

This is my danger time of year. I have form for just giving up in the autumn and stuffing my face until after Xmas!

So you all need to seriously kick my sorry slightly lardy arse and get back into it.

On a plus point, I did do my Jillian michaels workouts for 5 of the days pILs were here so that helps Wink

AtchooUhOh · 24/10/2013 23:28

Thanks Bsssh ... You were/are one of my main inspirations on here! (gush)

Just got to share the joy eh! It is so addictive and so worth it!

AtchooUhOh · 24/10/2013 23:39

Bravo MrsFlorrick on damage limitation!

I am considering a lawsuit against JM for damage to undercarriage after her and her bloody jumping jacks! You must have floors of steel.

But thanks to all of the exciting chat of weighted hoops, epic bruising and anti clockwise/clockwise abilities; I now want to be in the hula gang with all you hularers. Just hope I don't lose a boob or something! Hmm

MrsFlorrick · 24/10/2013 23:59

Atchoo. Grin

Not quite floors of steel. Veteran of emcs after 52 active labour and elcs. And about £5k worth of physio with woman's health specialist physio has returned some parts of me inc pelvic floor almost to former glory.

I am a hooper too. I do mine before
My Jillian 6 week 6 pack workout. Just acquired a new hoop. According to kind advice on here my old Davina hoop was too small (I'm 5'10") so I got an absolute mahoovise one!

It's a scary thing and I am sore from use but it actually works now. I just worry it will whack one of the DC (4 and 2) over the head. I make them sit on our bed with my iPad when I hoop so they are out of the way.

The DC are confirmed Jillian fans. They call her "the exercise lady" and join in which is hilarious to watch. As well as super cute because they are so serious about it too.

I fear my venture into mulled wine and crisps has undone good work Hmm

Must stick to fast tomorrow. I will be popping in here to help me stay on the straight and narrow.

CrystalDeCanter · 25/10/2013 03:26

Hi there, I'm sort of trying to do a 4:3 - 3rd fd today - as have busy weekend of eating ahead. I'm ravenous though and can't stop thinking about lunch (it's now 1pm here). I'm going to head out for a walk to distract myself.

Atchoo great post - v. inspiring!

eatriskier · 25/10/2013 06:42

MrsF Glad the new hoop is working. I've taken to hooping whilst DH has the kids in the bath in the evening as otherwise DD at least will just walk straight into the path of the spinning hoop normally from behind where I can't see her Hmm.

Atchoo glad you're converting like the rest of us, and very glad its having such a positive effect on you.

I was determined not to have my mince pies yesterday, other than the 1 I had calorie allowance for. I was determined to see another 1lb shift on the scales showing that I had hit 5 stone weight loss and then I could settle into a maintaining frame of mind. And the @£$£@ scales are still bang on 10st. Queue slight tantrum from me (no, I don't know where my kids get it from Halloween Wink) about how I'm not going to plateau 1 sodding lb away from target. Oh well, another week of weight loss 5:2 next week then hopefully I can start with attempting maintenance next week. I shall console myself with the fact that yesterday I bought myself a new belt in small and a top in size 8 (and fit into several 8s).

Well done yesterday's fasters, good luck all today's fasters.

eatriskier · 25/10/2013 06:49

Oh and people asking about how to determine what your target weight should be. In my case I started this with a target of BMI 22 in mind which would have been 9.5st, but with a review at 10.5st as that was the lowest weight I'd been as an adult. Come 10.5st I realised I didn't look awful this time so would crack on. But I've been changing my mind about this of late. Yes I need to lose some more stomach flab but that's more of a toning exercise issue and I'm also now a size 8/10 and I don't actually want to go lower than that. Just looking in the mirror I can see I'm not going to suit much slimmer. So I want to see 9st13 as that will a. be in the 9s and b. be a 5st loss since I started. If my experiments with maintaining mean I lose a few more lbs after that then I'm ok with that too but I don't really want to go much further than 9st9.

BsshBossh · 25/10/2013 07:28

0.8 lbs down this week, 76.6 lbs lost in total, 8 lbs to go :)

Today is a non-fast day and I have a jacket potato with baked beans, Cheddar and coleslaw planned for lunch. Yummy!

eatriskier · 25/10/2013 07:44

Oh bssh that reminds me. We used to use the Delia method but have switched to nigel Slater. Pretty much the same but instead of drying and oiling you leave wet and salt (no oil). Either way comes out lovely, though I always cook mine for a couple of hours at a low temperature. Enjoy your spud

lucyintheskywithdinos · 25/10/2013 07:51

Morning!

Well...I spent yesterday in hospital with DD3 having plastic surgery to her lip. Poor baby had to fast (not even water) for eight hours total and was a champion, she did really well. It was horrible though, but she is really happy today. She liked on nurse in particular who was the only one allowed to hold her, the others got growled at. She was under for a couple of hours, in surgery for just over an hour.

Anyway, it ended up being a mini fast because I couldn't bear to eat until she was allowed to too!

FD today, making a sort of 4:3 week.

AtchooUhOh · 25/10/2013 07:55

Morning All!

Well done Bsssh you're jacket sounds amazing. If wasn't out tonight with dd/dp to cinema and Pizza Hut I might have to join you. Will be on menu next week for sure!

Ref my long post last night about my experience - just realised that my dates are wrong. Checked on calendar and I've only been doing 5 weeks not 6. Though technically 5.5 because first week was 3 in just over a week. Weigh in coming up! Just waiting for things to errrrrm....move first! Every little helps Wink

AtchooUhOh · 25/10/2013 08:06

Oh Lucy poor you, and poor dd! Thanks for her Flowers for you. Sounds like a nightmare!
My dd fell off chair and put tooth through top lip when she was 3. I remember the spurting blood and the absolute terror that went through me. We rushed her to local clinic (nearest hosp 45 mins), but bizarrely it knitted itself back together quite quickly. Kind of shrunk in on self. She has a scar as reminder but otherwise was fine. It's a real test of parenting when you have to remain calm for them in middle of something that would normally have you screaming with fear isn't it! Hope you all feel recovered soon x

BetsyBell · 25/10/2013 08:14

Aww lucy, good to hear your DD was such a champion, what an ordeal for you both Flowers

bssh, eats we favour the Slater method too, yum yum

Inspiring post Atchoo, brilliant that you're enjoying so much :)

Exercise has been working the magic this week, only 1lb higher than my all time 5:2 low, recorded back in July before 2 sets of holidays! Still vaguely heading for 9st7 but mostly it's toning that's needed rather than any more loss.

I managed a yoga session yesterday evening which was nice. Had another insomniac night though but feeling alright for it today, and haven't tried to poke my eye out or sever a limb through tired clumsiness so that's a bonus!

NFD here but plans to keep it healthy anyway, not wanting to undo all the good work and all that. Tomorrow is likely to be a bit of a feast day so must leave room to enjoy that!

What benefits are you hoopers finding? Have you all whittled your waists down to nothingness by now? Grin

OP posts:
MrsFlorrick · 25/10/2013 09:12

Lucy. Sorry about your DD. awful. I feel for you both. Hope she fully recovers quickly. My DS raked my glass of water on the floor in between his feet at the age of 1. It smashed and he cut his ankle and foot deeply. Visit to a&e, X-ray (for glass pieces) and stitches and glue. He has a scar now as he wriggled about so much the day after it opened up again Confused. He was fine but I was in bits. The triage nurse also misunderstood how his injury happened and called social services!Shock The doctor who saw DS dispatched them again and we didn't need to be interviewed but it certainly didn't make me feel any better. Angry

Betsy. I am uncertain how much difference the hooping will make tbh. The Jillian Michaels workout is really what does it. But my last remaining bit of lard is smack bang in the middle of my belly just on and below the belly button and I am desperate to get rid and I have read hooping helps work the muscles so it pulls it in quicker. I will report back with results...

I don't think hooping alone would work but combined with something else I think it's a good addition and you work your core very quickly.

Eatriskier. You're the most experienced hooper here, how do you rate the results?

MrsFlorrick · 25/10/2013 09:16

Also Bssh. You're still my weight/BMI twin Grin. Also 8lbs to go. It was 7lbs but PILs visit saw some over eating....

I know you've said your taking it slow which is great. I am just desperate to get to the goal now. But I am an impatient sort of person at the best of times.

It's meant to be a FD here. Must stick to it.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/10/2013 09:25

lucy what a nighmare for you both, but you both came though like champs Flowers

eat well done indeed, you have lost a lot !

Betsy I haven't changed my gym bunnying on IF, but I noticed that pre-50, the fat loss on waist was early, but now it seems the last thing to happen (sigh).
Even top lifters / bodybuilders say abs are made 80% in the kitchen, 20% in the gym. Being male, they don't include hormones in the 80%.

Since changing from maintenance to part 2 of weight loss 11 days ago, I have lost fat on thighs, bum and upper abs since resuming, but not waist and lower abs yet
Sad
We -older- more mature ladies just need a lot of patience.

eatriskier · 25/10/2013 09:28

MrsF I think whim is probably our most experienced hooper but for me its making so much difference. The inch loss on my waist and hips is every time I measure now, albeit a small amount. Before I would lose but I'd have a long stall then suddenly an inch would go. I think I've lost about 3 inches off both measurements since I started which is phenomenal considering I started whilst I was in the normal BMI category. Things like JM just don't fit in with my lifestyle sadly so I can't compare the effects.

eatriskier · 25/10/2013 09:29

Lucy hope your DD is feeling better now (and you of course) Flowers
