Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Right another FD (kind of) today. It's not going to be 500 cals as I know what's for tea, but it can be 800.

I need to do this today so I can at least feel good about something. Work is just draining me emotionally and wearing me down.

I know 800 is more than it should be, but it is my first week and it's better than a NFD.

rubbishfamily333 · 07/11/2013 07:43

Morning thread,

Well another fast day today and this is the first time I'm not dreading it Grin hope it goes well for all today!

Not2bObvious · 07/11/2013 08:12

FD and not feeling it yet. Ok 4.5 hours til lunch, I can do it - right?!?!?

annielewis · 07/11/2013 08:17

FD here too, am looking forward to it as well! Feel bloated from chip supper last night and not remotely hungry!!

Good luck all other FDers!

BetsyBell · 07/11/2013 08:20

laska I haven't read his book but I do check out his blog from time to time - his ideas certainly are ones I agree with and a great recommendation.

SED When you said you lost more rapidly with 4:3 than 5:2 can I ask which order you did it in? ie lost more on 4:3 when you had more to lose?

If I were to look at data from my own 5:2ing in the past 3 months it would be possible to conclude that 5:2 doesn't = weight loss. BUT I'm at maintenance weight… However, if I look at my weightloss from January to April then 5:2 shows a pretty rapid rate - as I had plenty to shift then.

Fast day today. It'll be a harder one than Monday as I've been fairly moderate with the calories since then.

Stupid question (despite doing this since July!) On the previous page there's a mention of 'breaking the fast' and fasting for no more than 48 hours and breaking the fast by eating something gentle. Does breaking the fast refer to the meal on the fast day (I only eat once, at tea time) so its usually been 23 hours since my tea the night before. Or does it mean the first food after the fast day (so for me thats usually lunch and that would be about 40 hours). Please enlighten me. And FD here for me too, just off to the gym.

Thewildthingsliveatmyhouse · 07/11/2013 08:54

morning all! I'm joining you on FD today, my 2nd of the week - first week. looking forward to it! Definitely overate yest, I felt like I had to to compensate for fasting Tuesday. Determined that tomorrow will be a better day! was pleased at yesterday had to tighten belt on jeans a notch, woo hoo!! good luck to everyone today!! we can do it!! Grin

BetsyBell · 07/11/2013 08:54

Angie I mean it in terms of eating on a fast day… but as we fast before and after our 500 calories then it can mean the first meal you have the next day as well. Certainly that's got to be a light meal for me!

When people talk about a zero fast then that's the number of fasting hours before eating anything - so in your case you have a 23 hour zero fast but a 40 hour fast day over all.

Clear as mud Wink

Good morning all and fast day for me too.
My planned week of MFP'ing to bring me back into line after increasingly binge like behaviour on my NFDs has not worked at all Sad

Don't know what the matter is with me to be honest!

Anyway, today I am determind to have a good fast day so just got a portion of turkey casserole out of the freezer to have with a pile of veg for tea. Then tonight I'm out at a meeting which should prevent the dreaded evening munchies.

Hope everyone else has a good day!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/11/2013 09:27

Morning Campers!

Betsy Just how much did you enjoy typing that last sentence? :D

Am thinking of thread titles. Am imagining Tip and Eat on standby waiting for the thread jump, rolling eyes, whistling casually in a 'what new thread?' type manner .....

Thanks SouthEast always interesting/inspiring to get the bigger (now slimmer) picture. Well done on your achievement. It always renews my determination that this will happen for me too when I hear RL examples of others.

BsshBossh · 07/11/2013 09:34

Hello fellow Thursday fasters! Well, it's going to be a hard one for me today: DD had wet the bed at 4.30 am this morning (it's been such a long time since she's woken up at night) and I really struggled to get back to sleep so am very bleary eyed and tired this morning. I might treat myself to a yummy M&S ready meal for tonight (a real treat cause we eat homecooked mostly). I've heard the Count On Us range is very good but haven't tried it. Any suggestions please?

BsshBossh · 07/11/2013 09:35

Betsy size 8 woooohhoooo!

BigChocFrenzy · 07/11/2013 09:38

That's great, rubbish; it sounds like you're becoming an accomplished 52er !

Biscuits An 800 FD is a good start. It is a big calories deficit compared to your usual day. Good luck. Remember to drink lots of water

Hi SouthEast, congratulations on "coming out". You're clearly too tough to be scared off by our 12-yr old behaviours.

Welcome back, orangey. Enjoy your FD today

I'm FDing today, so hi also to Bssh, Angie, Annie, Somewhere, BeCool, Not2B and all other Thursday FDers. Phew, Thursday is popular.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/11/2013 09:40

Betsy Wayhay you tiny thing !! Flowers
Enjoy being 8 !

V droll reaction to southeastdweller Grin I have always felt this was one of the more male threads on MN.

re sugar I'm like a dog with a bone I'm afraid.

I suspect there is no 'good' sugar and no good sugar substitute either. But have we bottomed it out? Lustig's lecture gave me new parameters to think about it.

I have lots of unAnswered questions but this is my best interpretation.

Simplifying somewhat, Fructose like alcohol HAS to go to the liver and be turned to fat. That is why it is evil. That is why sadly agave nectar should be avoided.

Glucose does NOT have to go to the liver and be turned to fat, although it will if you eat more than you need (glycogen if unused ends up as fat I remember from my biology lessons).

The difference is that glucose gives you a fighting chance to burn it off whereas fructose doesn't.

Fructose may not cause insulin spikes but this is a red herring cause through fat buildup it decreases insulin sensitivity (I think).

So. Glucose a bit better if you are, as mosely says, active.

I've gone on a sweetener research binge and splashed some cash at planet organic.

Brown rice syrup seems to be pure glucose (some in maltose form which is 2 glucose molecules joined together) with possibly a low gi. It tastes mild and lovely. Natvia is erythritol (a polyol) and stevia extract blended, 0 cals, and though I hate stevia it tasted good in my tea. Got some xylitol too as I will bake again and know that tastes good. Not sure what its impact on metabolism is - allegedly low gi but so is fructose.

I will report back if people are interested.

Ps bigchoc is almond flour the same as ground almonds? Or finer and more floury? This whole thing is about low carb baking ultimately so may think through my flours more. Eg soya flour.

Ooh exciting! (I'm a bit sad)

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/11/2013 09:48

Fast day here too. 3rd in row as part of 4:3.
May turn into a mini fast later if I find I'm struggling, but at mo am feeling completely normal. It doesn't feel any different than a post nfd day tbh.

Starting to think it really is stomach related though. I have had recurring stomach ulcers for a few years now. First started after taking nsaids (amongst other things) for my back. Since then I get them now and then, sometimes stress, sometimes if I've had a particularly indulgent few days on the vino or rich food. I had just come to end of a 2 month course of omeprazole (basically switches off stomach acid production to allow healing) when I went out for meal last week and had some particularly hot chillies. I love spicy food, stick cayenne or fresh chillies in almost everything, but these were the sort that make your face instantly sweat and your eyes start tearing! Anyway since then I have felt a bit dodge in the belly. I stopped my course of omeprazole last week too, because usually it is sorted by 2 mths, and I've been getting this unbearable itching on scalp and skin issues on face, which I'm trying to investigate cause of. I wonder if tablet related. Def NOT nits.

So, my epic story is to get to point that this is prob reason I'm finding fasting so easy!

Also, if anyone has any input and can tell me why I want to rip my hair out with itching and why I keep getting bumpy raised areas on face and sometimes itchy eyes, please do! Gets worse at night, heat seems to aggravate itching, and there is no colour or obvious rash!

somewherebecomingrain · 07/11/2013 09:52

Just googled xylitol.

I think the worst thing is flatulence and diarrhoea which passes as you get used to it and beyond that it may do the job ok. Ie sweet and not surreptitiously toxic, low gi if not low carb. Could mix it with the natvia mebbe.

Low carb baking here I come.

postmanpatscat · 07/11/2013 09:53

cuckoo sounds like a food intolerance to me...but if you're fasting, that should narrow down possible allergens?

I've lost 1.4kg from my 2 FDs this week, so another 1.1kg would take me back to where I was before a week of all inclusive did the damage!

Good luck to today's fasters. I'll probably do 16:8 at the weekend then FD Mon and Weds next week too.

Well done betsy rubbish and wildthing ... bssh, I hope you get a nap later!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 07/11/2013 09:55

Somewhere - DEFINITELY report back!

toffeesponge · 07/11/2013 09:59

missstrawb here

I have been taking a break but back for a few days now and would like to re-join please.

Have been stuck at the same weight with 1lb on and off but I have done 2 fast days this week and weighed myself this morning and I am the lowest I have been since I started the 5:2 and since I have my 8 year old.

11stone 4.4lbs so 1 stone lost - 0.4lbs but I suspect we can ignore the 0.4 of a lb between friends Grin.
