Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Betsey have you read Escape the diet Trap by Dr John Briffa? he's very good on the glucose /insulin stuff

I'd recommend this book to everyone. It was written when fasting was just 'coming in' but he does mention it at the end ,but what's really interesting is the links he makes between 'diets' (based on restriction/change/certain types of foods) and the 'diet industry' and why a lot of these dont /cant work long term (unlike 5:2/IF/ADF which does seem to and of course is not a diet!) .. He also has a blog too .. Fascinating stuff

Ref whole sugar subject - I'm always reducing the quantities in baking as I find so many recipes are unnecessarily over sweet. So with this thread conversation in mind, I'm going to try my staple banana muffin recipe at weekend with no sugar at all.
As overripe bananas are used anyway - which are sweet enough, I'll maybe stick some finely chopped dates in to provide the caramel effect of the brown sugar and leave it at that.

Looking forward to trying it! I know there is still whatever it breaks down into once processed by body, but I'm quite happy eating sugars in natural form rather than adding it by the spoonful to food!! Oh and always in moderation of course Wink

Orangeychoc · 06/11/2013 22:07

Yes thanks for the encouragement will definitely join the fast tomorow!

BeCoolFucker · 06/11/2013 22:08

Yay!

Orangeychoc · 06/11/2013 22:08

Cuckoo et al - I often bake without sugar & find fruity recepies are often totally fine

Talkinpeace · 06/11/2013 22:10

Hi there Orangey and welcome.
A silly thing. Do not be disgusted with yourself. Cross and annoyed but not disgusted.
Disgust is a negative emotion. Annoyed is an active emotion.
It is also easier to dwell on negative emotions whereas your best bet is to let negative thoughts flow away and focus on positive thoughts.

And surf the wave of support on this thread.

Hi gang. Just back from boxing. The trainer didn't turn up so I took over, played my dance CD and enjoyed bossing everyone. I had an extra good workout because I used energy yelling at everyone (harder, you wimp, puking is no excuse to stop !) as well as working out.
Grin
cuckoo Being lazy, I order my sprouted bread from Amazon. You get 8 tiny, very dense loaves, naturally sweet and crumbly. Sprouted bread is much healthier and tastes sooo yummy. Also useful for folk who get bloated by the ordinary stuff. I don't bother to toast it.

Difficult Recipe:

  • slice bread (if using ordinary wholegrain, then toast it)
  • spread pnut butter (lick spoon afterwards)
  • sprinkle with lots of cinnamon (for dateless bread, optionally add chopped dates)
  • slice banana and place artistically on bread
CuckooAtchooUhOh · 06/11/2013 22:18

SouthEast 2 months - very impressed! How did you find it results wise and anything else you think may help?

Whimsical Do you mean to tell me there was no Pumpkin whatsoever in my latte!?!?! I paid good bloody money for that!!

Explains why my home version was so satisfying then, and without the syrupy finish part.

Spice I used was a mixed spice containing: cinnamon 47%, coriander seeds 20%, nutmeg 14%, cloves 9.5%, pimento 7.2%, ginger 2.7%.

I had thought of just cinnamon or nutmeg, but I think the mix gave a really nice balance.

Ever since Eat mentioned it on here I've come to learn that coffee and pumpkin are a whole thing too. I missed that one! Masses of recipes online for stuff.

Good luck with fd tmw. We were all suffering earlier in week. You'll be back to normal in no time!

BigChocFrenzy · 06/11/2013 22:20

I've heard of folks baking with apple puree replacing sugar.
Instead of sprinkling the top of things with sugar, I use cinammon, which is good for stable blood sugar.
When baking I use almond flour instead of wheat, much lower carbs. I also add wheat or oat bran.
If you just eat a high-carb meal, especially high sugar, always try to reduce the insulin impact by having plenty of fibre and protein.

The best method for stabilising blood sugar is of course: lots of lovely exercise !!!

BigChocFrenzy · 06/11/2013 22:30

cuckoo I recommend breaking the fast at maximum 60 hours. From the literature, it seems that after this point, some more negative things may start to happen: metabolism goes lower and muscle catabolism begins.

Fasts much longer than 48 hours are not recommended without medical advice / supervision unless you are healthy and experienced in longer fasts, not just single FDs.

Less stressful for your bod to have at least a couple of NFDs now and then continue with 4:3 if you really want to speed up things.

whimsicalname · 06/11/2013 22:33

I am now consulting my pumpkin spice jar. It contains cinnamon, ginger, lemon peel, nutmeg, cloves and cardamom so pretty similar. I chuck it in loads of stuff.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 06/11/2013 22:35

Talkinpeace "annoyed is an active emotion" .... is that why I always rave about the benefits of 'cleaning angry'? Grin

Haha! BigChoc can just imagine you in full force shouting at a gym full of mere mortals!! Grin Grin Grin Good for you! Bet they were quaking!

Okay - so complicated recipe then?! Was hoping for something warm and gooey throughout, a la bread and butter pudding style. Have no fear though, shall just slap it on the George Foreman and see what happens!

Now, that is a whole conversation thread - 'Do you have a GF (or similar) grill, if not get one, and if so - what do you cook on yours?'

Southeastdweller · 06/11/2013 22:35

cuckoo I lost on average half a pound more a week on 4:3 on the two months than I did on six months on 5:2 but it may be different for women. Yes folks I'm male - don't know if I've ever mentioned that before. I think keeping busy helped hugely so there's less focus on food and I've found this to be helpful on NFD's too. I also exercised on most of the FD's.

whimsicalname · 06/11/2013 22:41

Oooh a man...

Clearly I'm only 12 still.

postmanpatscat · 06/11/2013 22:46

survived my second FD of this week, just a wrap at lunch and soup for dinner and one chocolate digestive that really, really wanted me to eat it :) And an hour of running, almost made it to 9.5k so need to up the speed a bit to reach that next time.

southeast I never twigged that you were a bloke, not that it matters anyway! I feel like you've 'come out' or something!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 06/11/2013 22:47

Me too Whimsical! Sweet or savoury. Kept buying new jars by mistake so went through an experimentation phase of chucking it on just about everything!

Yes BigChoc used apple sauce in few things too.

So with fasting is that still the case (what you just said) if I am eating my 500 on fd?? It was nearer 700 yesterday. I don't know if I really have set my ulcer off again thanks to the chilli incident last week, but I just feel really bloated and uninterested in food last couple of days. Add to that acid reflux when I have eaten! Still eating plenty though, within allowance.

Think I'm just going to wing it tmw and see how feel as day goes on. Tbh if wasn't on 5:2 I would be doing same anyway and not questioning it. Although I guess I wouldn't be choosing exactly the same foods. I will look into it further for future reference but am prob more likely to split my days anyway for convenience.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 06/11/2013 22:50

SouthEast - not to get fresh with you or anything but can we have your stats? (5:2 that is Wink)

Talkinpeace · 06/11/2013 22:54

thinking of chaps on the thread, has anybody head from Mttum lately?
Cyclistist still visits the quiet thread
Would love to know how ManonBoard is getting on as well
and unless Southeast is a grandad, BreadandWine keeps his unique status!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 06/11/2013 23:03

Whimsical Grin

Are we all circling round like the little aliens on Toy Story cooing 'oooh man'?

Please don't run, the title of this site suggests that most of us have (wince) come across a member of the male species before. But we are 12 a little bit

BigChocFrenzy · 06/11/2013 23:07

cuckoo If you really feel ok and are healthy, but do be careful because females may be more sensitive to fasting than males. Remember Mosley had medical supervision for his 4 day fast.

Break your fast with a small amount of something soothing but nourishing

whimsicalname · 06/11/2013 23:09

I live with 5 of them! Husband and 4 boys. Not a weird marital set up.

BsshBossh · 06/11/2013 23:54

The Everfresh is the exact brand I used to buy. It's delicious stuff: very moreish. I got it from Holland & Barrett. I might see if my local health food store stocks it...

WannaBeCareerWoman · 07/11/2013 00:07

Thanks guys. I survived due to large amounts of distraction and a diet coke. I think I'll stock up on those.

Cuckoo no idea, but I am sure it's fine as long as you don't always do it. I can definitely see fast free Friday being a good thing.

Twinmama32 · 07/11/2013 01:52

Argh cant sleep! Had an impromptu fast day yesterday (Wednesday) and now I'm struggling to doze off, this still happens even 9 months on this strange insomnia, bizarre!

Anyways in my wakefulness I've been researching bikram yoga, do any 5:2ers do it? Whilst fasting? How often a week? Can you be an absolute beginner? I've done yoga years ago and I loved it but not sure if the heat will be too much? Whether my poor knackered, weak and physically unfit body will hack it?
Any info gratefully received!

Southeastdweller · 07/11/2013 04:20

Morning. Been up since 1.30 and can't get back to sleep Angry

cuckoo I'm 37, 5 feet 10", small frame and 10 st 9lbs, having lost 2.7lbs since Jan 25th. Was 34" waist with trousers, now I'm a 30 in some shops, 32 in others. So glad the dreaded moobs have pretty much disappeared! I was a 38" chest before, now I'm 34. Gone from medium to small in most shops clothes and half a shoe size down. I'm going to put up some before and after pics when I've eventually toned up.

postman I know, it feels like the last scene in Tootsie when Dustin Hoffman takes off the wig and specs! Grin
