The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Cuckoo please confirm there was no actual pumpkin in that latte Grin

The only time I set foot into Starbucks is once a year, on a very cold day in December when I get a huge Gingerbread Latte with cream. Looking forward to it.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 06/11/2013 11:52

BeCool the confirmation should've been in the title Wink!

We don't have a Starbucks near us, so last week when we took dd out for day I was determined to find one. Dp took dd off swimming - which I don't 'do' - so I googled the town we were in and discovered they had one. Spent ages walking around looking for the street it was meant to be on. Figured, it's in a busy town, surely can't be that hard to find!

Anyway, gave up in end as was getting chilly and dark so decided to head to leisure centre where dd/dp and the car were! Not familiar with the area and was starting to get nervous about unknown walk in the dark. Decided to try downloading google maps app as didn't have bloody clue where was going! Which, I discovered had been successful, when my phone started shouting "turn left in 100 yds!". Volume down and off I went. A mere 1 min later and whatd'ya know, but there, at end of street, shining it's blue neon lighting like a beacon of hope and joy was the Starbucks I'd been looking for!

So I abandoned my journey to the leisure centre and got in the queue!! Grin

BeCoolFucker · 06/11/2013 11:56

Doh! I read Pumpkinish! Grin

BsshBossh · 06/11/2013 12:08

Just had my "Over 40 health check" at my GPs where we reviewed all my blood work etc (had the blood tests a fortnight ago) - they test liver function, urea, blood sugar, cholesterol, thyroid, blood pressure, weight. It's a free check and they review regularly depending on your state of health. I urge any of you to push for it with your docs. My results were all fine which is a relief as diabetes, strokes, high blood pressure all run in my immediate family. They'll see me in 5 years time (it would have been sooner if they'd been concerned). The doc was shocked at how much weight I'd lost - he was very impressed - but I chickened out of telling him I'm doing 5:2.

BsshBossh · 06/11/2013 12:09

rubbish what is this chocolate crunch and how many calories? I always love something sweet after dinner so am interested :)

Talkinpeace · 06/11/2013 12:16

BsshBossh Well done you. Most medics are happy with 5:2 nowadays. I'll see if they do a 'nearly 50' checkup !

Unintended fast so far today : kids finished the milk, bread, eggs and orange juice and now I must go to Sainsburys!

BigChocFrenzy · 06/11/2013 12:54

That's good to hear, Bssh. Never know, maybe your GP is 52ing or would recommend it to patients after seeing you !

Rubbish Sounds like you are doing really well on this WOL.

Cuckoo did you decide on a 2nd FD today, or is it a mini ?

Yes, somewhere, I'm an equal opportunity pig, for both sweet and savoury. Like you, my TDEE seems higher in practice than theory: I've always had a weekly pigout of 3-5000 cals, which should mean that I now cover 2 postcodes. However, in my 50s it started to catch up with me: my BMI reached 24.9 , now 23 .

NFD for me today: no breakfast, enormous lunch of salmon, shrimps, pots, 8 veg, huge rice pud. Just a small tea or shake before my evening boxing & Tabata.

I think I can ditch the rice pud weekdays via this substantial substitute - might work for you too, cuckoo:
-Sprouted bread with dates (if n/A substitute normal wholegrain toast plus xtra fruit)
-Organic peanut butter containing only pnuts & salt
-Banana
-Cinammon

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 06/11/2013 14:34

Yes BigChoc am fasting today. No problems yet. My Latteish took care of anything remotely needy earlier.

Have to say that apart from the whole totm build up/duration thing (was the half term week to boot!), I am finding fast days - on the whole - easier and easier. Not interested in food. Yet. I like to have as my evening meal - it is bit of ritual once dd in bed, and day done, I sit down about 8:30 with bit of telly and my dinner and switch off.

That pud you just described - I have all but the sprouted bread. Got wholemeal brd and pitted dates though? What do I do with it? S'plain please!

And tell me about sprouted bread oh Chocolatey one.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 06/11/2013 14:50

Apologies if you're mid typing :)

Have googled sprouted bread. Looks right up my alley. So no need for explanation, but where do you know of that sells it??

(adds to list with townie, duffin and cronut Hmm)

MelanieCheeks · 06/11/2013 14:53

Tried a new soup for FD lunch today - Mama brand Pho Ga found in the Asian section of Tesco. 50 calories, instant sloppy slurpy rice noodles, but tasted absolutely gorgeous. There's a Chand Clear soup as well, same calories.

BsshBossh · 06/11/2013 15:02

sprouted bread I used to eat this all the time when I was a veggie (must eat again!) and I bought mine in Holland and Barrett and various health food stores.

rubbishfamily333 · 06/11/2013 15:19

Bssh - it's harvest morn from aldi, 30g is 141cals. It's like granola with small bits of dark chocolate and white chocolate! It's especially yummy with Rachael's low fat vanilla yogurt Wink

BetsyBell · 06/11/2013 16:15

Sometimes I read through this thread and it just seems like a big list of amazingly indulgent food! So we all get to eat all this loveliness and yet we're all losers (weigh wise of course) too.

Not bad this WOE is it? Grin

OP posts:
BetsyBell · 06/11/2013 16:25

No sugar thing is going well for me - the staff room was chockablock with cakes, sweets and puddings today so was grateful not to be allowed to start on any of that.

The only thing I hankered after while shopping were dates (just remembered that after reading bigchoc's post Grin). Definitely not allowed them here at the moment, I'm really bad at limiting myself to a sensible number, especially if I start eating them with nuts.

Sainsbury's do a mix bag of dates and pecans, it is an amazing combo.

WannaBeCareerWoman · 06/11/2013 16:31

Any tips for surviving your first proper FD day?? Aaaaaaagh.

BetsyBell · 06/11/2013 16:44

Keep busy, keep out of the kitchen, lots of hot drinks Wannabe and thinking about what you're going to eat tomorrow!

How long till you break your fast? Can't be long….

OP posts:
rubbishfamily333 · 06/11/2013 17:06

Wannabe - drinks and lots of them! If your desperate a diet coke? Lots of water.

Keep busy! I got myself some nice books to read from the library to keep myself entertained! Good luck Wink

Have you eaten anything today?

BsshBossh · 06/11/2013 17:18

Thanks rubbish. We don't have an Aldi near us but I know the type of thing you mean now so will look for similar. I originally thought you meant the Nestle scum crunch bar Grin.

BeCoolFucker · 06/11/2013 17:21

Wannabe It's OK to be hungry. Tell yourself it is OK to be hungry - tomorrow you can eat whatever crazy things your body/mind is telling you you want! (Though you probably won't want it in the morning)

You are nearly there. Keep going. If it is unbearable later have a bath & an early night.

Talkinpeace · 06/11/2013 17:49

Wannabe I find blitz cleaning is a great way to pass the time when hungry .... the bottom of that cupboard ... or the back of that drawer or under that child's bed Wink

somewherebecomingrain · 06/11/2013 19:42

wannabe I gave myself a guilty pleasure to replace/distract from food. I watched two twilight films back to back. Anything you REALLY want to treat yourself to that doesn't involve food?

bsssh I feel that if the Romans missed a trick by chucking up to allow themselves to eat more at feasts. They shoulda fasted. The intense pleasure I get from food now - it's rare and extraordinary. Have to say I didn't feel it initially cause my body was in shock. I remember someone saying food tasted strange after a fast and it did. Now it just tastes divine, miraculous.

So fasting tomorrow. And on Friday lunch at the oxo tower with my dp and baby girl!!Smile

Loving sprouted bread and sprouted bread talk.

Btw betsey and others eschewing sugar what is the consensus on the best form of sugar? Should I be baking with brown rice syrup which breaks down I gather into pure glucose?

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 06/11/2013 19:44

I know I could prob look this up but as you're all here with real life experience thought I'd tap into you 5:2 gurus!

Thoughts on a 3 consecutive day 4:3??

I want to get another in this week to complete my 4:3. Did one yesterday (albeit 700), doing one today, and as of this moment in time I really don't think I would have a problem with tmw as well.

This would be more convenient as I would enjoy a fri night more than a thurs night, fast free.

Think my Monday transition from half term hell has put me in good stead. I have had NO cravings yesterday or today other than the odd - and by odd I mean rare - hunger wave.

Don't want to jeopardise fat loss because at mo it is priority.

Any pearls of wisdom??...

BetsyBell · 06/11/2013 19:52

somewhere No idea really. I sometimes buy date syrup but it wouldn't be suitable for sponge cake baking. I think it's better to just be realistic about it - it's not good for you in large quantities but is fine in moderation when used responsibly! So, eat it mindfully and buy ethically sourced stuff. Sorry, not that helpful :)

No pearls from me cuckoo, never even tried 2 days in a row. BreadandWine might have more knowledge...

OP posts:
BsshBossh · 06/11/2013 19:55

Cuckoo I'm no expert but so long as you eat a bit on each day and you feel fine then a 3 day consecutive fast should be okay. I doubt your metabolism will slow down after just 3 days fasting (and it won't be a true fasting operiod anyway due to the 500 cals). Go for it!

somewherebecomingrain · 06/11/2013 20:01

Yes betsey let me paraphrase that - least bad sugar.

If you follow lustig's logic glucose is the least bad. Because it gets metabolised quicker and very little turns to fat. whereas fructose turns to fat in much the same way alchohol does. all calories are not equal etc. You want a sugar with no fructose - so no sucrose or honey or agave nectar.

Anyone else got any thoughts? Is this a red herring? And is there a nice natural form of pure glucose?

I am going to be eating a lot of sugar whilst breastfeeding, no way round it.
