The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I love it - but I must confess I stole it from some other sage person Blush

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 05/11/2013 20:25

Woo-hoo! Stupid nexplanon is out. Time to get back to losing weight :)

whimsicalname · 05/11/2013 21:09

Blimey this thread's gone quickly. After a week off, I really enjoyed my fd yesterday. I didn't loose any weight over the week, but have lost 10lbs in 9wks which I'm pleased with. I also had the excellent experience of buying (very) smart dresses for a.couple of.rather smart Christmas events from a second hand shop. Don't know what size they are, don't care. The important thing is they look great!

Good luck to everyone fasting today. Nearly over! I'm next up on thursday, but if I have a hangover I might not. We'll see! Love the flexibility.

Survived doing my food inventory. Found posh mince pies unopened from last year which I'll throw away amongst other delights. There is just tons there in the cupboard and fridge for one person and i just realised that in a way I'm still thinking like was when I was bigger with food shopping. I love that I'm still learning things about myself on this WOL, even ten months since starting.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2013 21:32

Evening all. Just returned from 2 tough but very enjoyable hrs at the gym: CrossFit then HIIT spin.
Quite a respectable NFD: I had a huge breakfast and a big lunch, but nothing since, except a cocoa just now. So it feels I managed TDEE.

I've had no junk since my breakfast choc cookie frenzy which started the "No Naughties" idea and I am actually quite excited about my initial 10 days cold turkey.
Shock
To reassure all who are worried we are depriving ourselves, cuckoo and I are still having treats, but just for 1 or 2 days per week instead of every day. If we can't manage that without distress, then we have problems.
Also, I like chemical sweetener crap so I'm not restricting that.
Smile
I will have no problem reaching TDEE on NFDs - my problem is delicious 3000 cal meals and sometimes eating 4500+ in a day!
Blush

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2013 21:44

Another reason for my "NoNaughties": I'm expecting it to be difficult to lose my 10 lb, because of my age and the fact I'm BMI 23 with not a lot of fat. I think I reached a plateau after I lost my first 10 lb in Spring. The interim maintenance (16:8 and 6:1) was easy, but I need a major effort to break through.

I think the trick will be to follow eat's rule of "pick 3". Eat you nicked very wisely.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2013 21:48

Whimsical That's a good weight loss in 9 weeks Flowers

WilsonFrickett · 05/11/2013 21:59

I don't agree with deprivation but I 100% agree with the concept of giving yourself a reset. ATM 5:2 is resetting my takeaway button (can't have one on fds; don't want to undo good work on nfd's) likewise for wine. Not particularly sweet toothed so that doesn't figure right now. But I suspect it will further down the line.

I was tempted by No vin bet but have two trips away so it ain't gonna happen Grin but will do my best to join in through the week if that's ok?

Thewildthingsliveatmyhouse · 05/11/2013 22:01

hey southeast thanks for asking Smile I'm actually ok. I reckon I've come in just under 500 cal so not too bad at all. I realise that the pangs of hunger I get at work are mainly down to boredom. I am definitely hungry now but planning a couple of large glasses of water before bed shortly! no headaches, no cramps. One happy lady! I suppose you could say I cheated as had a ready meal for dinner. only 280 cals, and totally yum, savoured every mouthful! looking forward to fasting on Thursday too Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2013 22:20

Well done WildThing
Ready meals are absolutely not cheating. They are also very easy to cal count.

WF Happy to have company on our NNN, whatever bits anyone likes to join us on.

Betsy Like all small rodents, I can live off cheese indefinitely ! I shouldn't really increase my already very high cheese intake. I often enjoy 350 g cheese fondues (I get the packets intended for 2-3 folk)

BeCoolFucker · 05/11/2013 22:46

Hello everyone, it's taken me over a year to get to you but finally I am here.

I did ADF quite successfully a few years ago (pre the MM programme) but stopped. Split with XP last Xmas and have been emotionally eating/in food denial for nearly a year. As a result I'm the heaviest I've ever been according to the scales yesterday. 113kgs -5'8" BMI nearly 39 Sad fuckity fuck fuck. 18 months ago I was 93kgs.

I'm ready now & 5:2 is the way I am convinced. Just finished my first fast day and I feel hungry but great. Off to bed now. I'll be back.

I need this.

WannaBeCareerWoman · 05/11/2013 22:54

Good luck BeCool, another newb here.

MrsFlorrick · 05/11/2013 23:14

Welcome Becool! Smile

Thanks everyone for the support today re my angry outburst with DC this morning..

Not so long ago that would have been an excuse to demolish a couple of packets of biscuits.

Not now. Fast day here. And my mega double Jillian workout.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 05/11/2013 23:29

Fast day complete. Did nearer 700 but was all good stuff so pleased enough. Still bloated from weekend!

In luxurious position now of either doing a fast day again tmw, which right now feels would be piece of piss (sorry but cake is cals Wink), OR have a nfd??

Will decide in morning but have to say this 4:3 week going amazingly to plan so far. That's what you get for being such a pig for previous 7 days in comparison! I'm still loaded up! Not weighing til fri though, so fingers crossed I've lost by then!

CoolFucker GET ON IT!!!!! Those extra kgs are gonna wish they'd picked someone else's hips to land on! Well done for today and Good Luck!

eatriskier · 06/11/2013 06:31

Omg I had forgotten how much easer it is to diet at work, what with distraction and not easy access to food. Other than being a fussy cow and struggling to find healthy nice breakfast options that is. Today I shall be skipping breakfast, didn't feel like I could yesterday then felt like I had just wasted calories Confused. But at lunchtime I am going to have a cronut (as well as a healthy soup). I've finally located a seller and have been waiting for months. They certainly look worth 500 calories!

I shall report back just to make today's fasters hate me Wink

postmanpatscat · 06/11/2013 07:55

eat we couldn't hate you!

I'm fasting again today, have hung onto 700g of my 1100g loss from Monday's fast despite two Yorkie bars yesterday. I prefer Weds to Thurs though I don't know why!

Who else is joining me?

I am fasting today Postman. It's a back to back with yesterday. Got a really busy day of house reshuffling planned, so that should help.

Eat - I have to ask.... what is a cronut?? (assuming that wasn't a typo?)

somewherebecomingrain · 06/11/2013 09:20

bigchoc have you always eaten like that? I've always eaten far more than other people ad think that for what I eat I should be fatter. Eating an entire fondue for 3 people is a bit beyond me but then I'm in bf sugar mode. I do eat 24 inch cakes in instalments of half and whole cakes.

BeCoolFucker · 06/11/2013 09:45

Thanks for welcomes and woops!

First fast day went well & I ignored the nighttime urges to destroy the whole day and got busy elsewhere. BIG TICK!!

Normal day today but I'm not hungry at all - had a latte but now back on the herbal tea and feeling great. I'm also focusing on drinking less coffee and get a lot more vegetables etc back into my normal everyday diet. It's a bummer but living on cheese and bread apparently isn't really the way to go. On the plus side I really do know how to eat healthily and I enjoy it too once I get going - but I've got into bad habits of not cooking or simply going for high fat "easy" foods as once the DC are in bed I'm knackered. So its all about bring the good habits back into my life and not undermining myself.

I'm giving myself a couple of weeks to settle into 5:2 (or perhaps 4:3) before getting into developing a home exercise schedule. Gym isn't possible (FT working SP so no time at all for that) so I need stuff I can do in my tiny living room once the DC are in bed.

eatriskier · 06/11/2013 10:03

cuckoo it's a croissant/donut hybrid. A donut made with Croissant dough. Should be light, fluffy and very big! There are also Duffins (donut/muffins) and townies (tart/brownies) somewhere in the wilds too

WannaBeCareerWoman · 06/11/2013 11:05

MrsFlorrick, anyone having two kids of that age deserves a statue made in their honour, me thinks. I am in admiration you are doing this as well!

Who's on FD today? Apart from me, that is.

Question: On a NFD, is it ok to to eat 2 meals rather than 3? So brunch at about 10 - 11, and then lunch at about 3? Maybe a fruit in the evening?

rubbishfamily333 · 06/11/2013 11:10

Hey thread, well yesterday I ate to just under my tdee Grin very proud, I know alot of you are cutting out the junk! I'm just reducing it for now.

Yesterday I had chocolate crunch with low fat yogurt after my dinner which was yummy! I'm going to try having this as my snack/ pudding on non fast days and maybe chocolate at the weekend if I fancy it.

So after eating to 40 cals under tdee yesterday I woke up this morning feeling full Shock didn't have breakfast! Then met my mum and had a panini about 10ish which I usually love but didn't today?? Maybe 5.2 is changing what I want to eat? I am kind of regretting eating it!

Also yesterday I had a lovely cheese and cauliflower soup from a local cafe it was so yummy! I seem to be fancying soup more often and not bread/Panini's etc I hope this continues!!

Also weighed myself this Mornind and I was still 10.7.2 so i didn't gain by eating my tdee which is great :)

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 06/11/2013 11:31

Oooh slobber slobber Eat - you are showing me a whole new world of food! I LOVE this thread!

I never knew I needed a townie in my life. Until now!

In the spirit of the very yum Pumpkin Spice Latte you introduced me to last week, I have concocted an at home (basically what had in cupboards) version. Not quite a PSL - apparently there's just been a big rush on pumpkins??.. - but good enough.

Btw - went with your recommendation on the no cream and glad I did, would've found it too sickly, esp when got to bottom and found it quite syrupy.

Pumpkinless Spice Latteish:

130g semi skim milk (couldn't find jug so weighed) 60cals
Heat in micro/hob
Top up in mug with boiling water
Add usual tsp coffee 0cals
Dark brown sugar (gives more caramelised flavour) 1tsp 15cals - but add to own personal taste. Mine = 20 cals
Pinch of mixed spice 0 cals (was roughly 8th tsp)

et voila! Actually really yummy. Needed something more soothing than the usual drinks I have on a fd and this has done the trick nicely.
