Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

MrsF You were not a bad mum this morning, that behaviour is intolerable! How old are they? What do they like doing best of all?

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 05/11/2013 10:57

MrsF one word (Hmm) TOTM!

Not saying they aren't being little shits, just that everything feels worse at this totm. I was in melt down mode of the angry/heart broken tears variety on Sunday. Same problems as I had week before, same as have now. Things can feel very overwhelming all of a sudden, when the hormones hit.

Deep breaths, think of motherhood as a fd today, and just ride it out. Re group tmw or thurs and I am sure you will feel like a different person. We all lose it sometimes don't beat yourself up. Dig deep, remember! You will get your shit together and kick their little butts a la JM stylie!

Failing that act like a pitiful wounded animal until they notice mummy not happy. You may bring out their empathy rather than their spoons Grin.

Thanks and Brew for you today. I'm sure you're an amazing mummy and that they think it too! X

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 05/11/2013 11:06

Thanks, Betsy

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 05/11/2013 11:08

Give them jobs! Explain they are big boys now and that you were just thinking you could do with some extra help with certain things, and that "if they think they could manage it?" wink wink it would be really useful, and you would really appreciate help from two big strong boys etc etc...

Then give them various things to do daily. With breakfast - set table, clear table etc. Keep emphasising their help and your appreciation. Encouragement is key!

Before you know it they'll be massaging your fd feet for you! Wink

BsshBossh · 05/11/2013 11:15

MrsF I think you need to ban screens for your DC today (or whatever treat they enjoy). Poor you!

MrsFlorrick · 05/11/2013 11:15

Thanks Betsy and Cookoo. Thanks

They are 2 and 4. I feel so mean shouting. But they don't listen and generally refuse to do what they are told. The problem is that whilst they finally listen and do as told when I shout, they also dissolve into tears. And I feel horrible having shouted when I see the little teary faces.

Time out used to work with DD and she used cry at time out too. No longer effective for some reason. I did have limited success taking some of her Moshi monsters for bad behaviour.

DD was angelic behaviour wise until about 4 months ago. Just before she turned 4, there was a change and she has been very boisterous and badly behaved along with tantrums since then. Perhaps that's what being 4 is about? She has also become incredibly bossy.

DS is only small but has always had a cheekier side and has always challenged rules set for him. And he has gone through terrible twos text book style with lots of long loud public meltdowns. He adores his big sister. She is the world to him. And he follows her and imitates her so if she is tantrumming and badly behaved he follows suits immediately.

I know its normal behaviour and I know its normal for pre schooler and young children to not listen. But I just feel awful having shouted and seeing the little teary faces. SadSad

I have had a little cry. And I am going to do my new Jillian Ripped in 30. Yikes.

Thanks again everyone.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 05/11/2013 11:29

Sounds like the key to success is get mob boss (dd) sorted, then ds should follow suit. Seems like an age ago dd was there. Every new age presents new challenges though doesn't it! I stick by what said previously. Maybe dd needs some new stimulation now. Giving her responsibilities as a 'mini mummy' may help to channel her energies in a more positive direction. And skim the naughty edge off behaviour as they learn about responsibilities and that mummy is human and needs help (compassion) too! Help which they esp dd can deliver. Puts you all on same team too.

BetsyBell · 05/11/2013 11:36

Jillian will take your mind off the wee 'darlings' MrsF!

Don't worry about getting shouty, it's inevitable when they're that age. I would try clearly set out some rules (try and get them to think they've thought of them!) eg, before breakfast agree to how they should behave and clearly state what the reward will be for good behaviour and what the sanctions will be for bad behaviour (eg will get tv time after breakfast/will not get tv time after breakfast)- then follow through immediately. They are young so will need reminding a lot but if you are consistent it will have an effect. When they whine about not getting whatever the failed reward is remind them (in a calm voice) why not and ask them how they could have got it. If they get the treat make sure to remind them why they got the treat.

Then you will feel in control and they are responsible for their actions. Good luck! x

Mrs F You are a super mum. They are being little shits, but they'll grow out of it. Just take plenty of Wine and Cake for medicinal purposes.

Welcome Harry, Wildthing. Get stuck in !

Hey Bayliss, great start ! Sounds like this WOL is for you.

Talkinpeace · 05/11/2013 12:06

Harrystottle
That huge weight loss will basically be your digestive tract emptying. You'll likely not get another loss like it till the first fast after Christmas.
Work out what your TDEE is (link in the OP) and try to stay within it on the over five days (averaged across the week)

also DO NOT WEIGH YOURSELF EVERY DAY
because unless you are weighing in the same clothes and at the same stage of your weekly food pattern you are really weighing poos, wees and undigested food.

Aim for non scale victories

  • measure your waist once a week and track that
  • choose a pair of jeans you've not been able to get into for a while and measure the button gap getting smaller as the weeks pass
BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2013 12:12

Betsy, Chocolate I'm just abstaining from sweet junk for a week, not committing the chocolate equivalent of taking vows and going into a convent

Not2bObvious · 05/11/2013 12:14

Little one poorly so at home today. 1st weigh in of the week after first (mini FD)and I'm up .4 from Friday. I wish I'd taken the time to record my ups/downs over the last 5.5 months but from my hazy recollection, that's pretty good and I might be on track for 1lb this week Grin Did my Davina this morning so that's one exercise session in the bag. Aiming for 3 days exercise a week, more if I can.
7 weeks today to Xmas eve!!! I'm asking Santa for a 7 pound lossWink That would put me at about 10.11, that would be so great. Today's going to be light, a little more than a mini fast, but a fair bit under tdee.
Sorry about the me me me - avoiding the elephant in the room - I ain't giving up anything this month Grin

somewherebecomingrain · 05/11/2013 12:23

I just had a cake frenzy. Have eaten my entire TDEE and its only midday. I feel good nonetheless. Seem to have lost another inch on my waist after fd.

I would join the sugar boycott if I wasn't breastfeeding.

Thewildthingsliveatmyhouse · 05/11/2013 12:54

Thank you all and cuckoo, I am drinking lots of water! The waves of hunger are coming but I'm letting them wash over me. Has been interesting watching colleagues stuff their faces this morning and not join in! Feeling determined!

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2013 13:09

cuckoo I had intended to do this only for a week, but you have inspired me to go for a "No Naughties November". A sufficiently crappy name.

My rice pud weekdays, like your sugared coffee, are a probable deal breaker, so they stay (I tried making my own, still finding bits of exploded milk behind kitchen jars / clock / on the ceiling).
Also, I drink Coke zero, cocoa with Splenda (I'm not listening, tip, lala) so I'm not giving up chemicals either.

My plan until Xmas parties:

  • No alcohol (but I only drink a few glasses total per year anyway !)
  • No sugary junk for the next 10 days, then just Sat OR Sun, not both

That's Cuckoo, Betsy, me. Any other suckers volunteers ?

Talkinpeace · 05/11/2013 13:26

I'll happily give up chocolate ...... because I do not like it Grin
Cheese on the other hand ....

Bigchoc is it worth seeing if you can wean yourself off the craving for sweet for a few days at the same time Wink

Bayliss1 · 05/11/2013 13:30

Precious well done on crossing over into 11s! I'm jealous!

Rubbish most days but go off last Mondays weight

Wild things I agree with cuckoo that missing breakfast helps (I'm new to this but tried both ways in my first week and preferred no breakfast option).

Mrs F I sympathise with you! I have a 2.6 yr old and 7 month old and the older one tests my patience at times! Hope you're feeling better now!

Thanks BigChoc! With what I've read on here, you seem very knowledgable in this WOL (I called it a 'diet' but if doesn't feel like one). What progress have you made and how long have you been doing 5:2?

Talkinpeace I like your advice of putting on a pair of jeans each week that are on the tight side!

I've just sat down with 2 huge cobs (or bread rolls...) and only eaten 1! What the hell is happening to me?!!!

BsshBossh · 05/11/2013 13:46

I won't be joining you for No Naughties November but wanted to say good luck guys!

MrsFlorrick · 05/11/2013 13:56

Betsy, Cookoo and bigchocfrenzy and everyone.

Thanks so much. You've all made me feel better.

Bigchocfrenzy and Cookoo. You're hard core!!! I should probably join you. I will give it some thought this afternoon.

I went all out with my new Ripped in 30 Jillian effort. I didn't think the Week 1 section was hard enough. I did it with 3kg weights and barely broke a sweat. So I double timed it and did Week 2 immediately afterwards. Week 2 is hard. So I feel like I worked for it. I certainly dug deep!!!

If I can't walk tomorrow at least I know why. Grin

Broke my fast and am having Tom Yum soup (200cals). Left over roast chicken and salad later on for dinner.

Just realised DH is now away until Friday night. I have loads of food in fridge. I am sticking beef and sausages in freezer as I think the rest will either keep or the DC and I will eat it over the next few days.

Bigchocfrenzy. How will you keep going without a little treat?? Isn't that the point of this woe that you can sneak a small treat in? I admire you. And your abstaining abilities.

Not2bObvious · 05/11/2013 13:59

I'm with you Bssh
Ladies I wish you all the luck in the world but I did too many years of cutting everything out with ww/sw, well I say cutting it out , I never did and always ended up face down in a bucket of celebrations. For the last c. 6 months, I've improved my eating habits, lost some weight and I can still eat what I like, and hopefully I improved my health. I know I was the one earlier saying

Not2bObvious · 05/11/2013 14:02

Damn phone , I was saying I had been saying about 7 weeks to Xmas, hoping for 7 pound loss but the other thing I've been thinking is, I'd love this year to just treat it as a day not days and days of indulgence. One days excessive can be undone in 1-2 fd's.
Now I'll shut up, sorry for the blah blah blah Blush

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 05/11/2013 14:18

I'm not sure that fasting and cutting out all 'bad' food is a great idea, tbh

Cutting out calorie-rich food will make keeping to your TDEE on NFDs a chore you don't need, and in the extreme wouldn't it encourage larger portions to keep that calorie count up?

The good thing about this WOE/WOL for me is that you don't have to obsess about everything you eat

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 05/11/2013 14:27

Hi all - FD here today and going well. Only had a couple of cups of tea plus water etc.

Good luck with cutting out the junk guys, I'm not going to join you either - I love not having to think about what I'm eating 5 days a week too much :)

Talkinpeace · 05/11/2013 14:28

Theleast
Its not obsessing, its learning that junk food really has no regular place in a healthy lifestyle.
I love wine, DH loves chocolate, the kids love crisps
but snacks and excess sugar are exclusively modern things invented by the food industry to make profits, they have nothing to do with meals or living well for a long time

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 05/11/2013 14:28

Not2be NEVER apologise for being yourself. It is not blah blah blah, it is your input and it is valued! You are sharing, and sharing's caring! That goes for all you apologisers of the 'me me me' or the 'blah blah blah'. Last time I looked, this was a chat thread. We are here to learn, make friends and support each other to a healthier/happier lifestyle. We are all important valuable beings with something to contribute. Let the love in, and the lard out Wink x
