Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

postmanpatscat · 05/11/2013 08:02

Wow, bigchoc good for you if you succeed at that! I wouldn't even try

Well done on your loss rubbish. 1.1kg of holiday weight gain gone for me :)

Slept really badly, thought an hour run would have worn me out but I've pretty much been awake since about 3.30 apart from the odd 10 minute doze. Headache and cramps, yeuck.

Good luck to today's fasters.

Itsaboatjack · 05/11/2013 08:09

Morning. Hope everyone is well.

FD for me today, I couldn't do it yesterday as I made our first batch of mulled wine and was teaching the staff how to do it, and after all I can't teach it and not taste it Grin

Dotty342kids · 05/11/2013 08:13

Morning all!
Well done all Monday fasters, hope you / I enjoy our NFD today Smile
For cuckoo and whoever else is wondering about hooping, I have this one Hoop

BetsyBell · 05/11/2013 08:15

Robert Lustig on Sugar The first link is an amazing lecture - it's 1.5 hours though so try some of the shorter ones first.

I am aware no one asked for these links but I'm going to re-watch as it really helps to remind ourselves why sugar is really not a good thing. I"m sure most of the sugar we eat comes in snack form and we all know that snacking is a stupid idea.

Proviso - I will eat fruit as part of meals but am avoiding sugar for 2 weeks in all other forms.

My sugar addiction isn't nearly so bad as it used to be before 5:2 but i have noticed I've eaten something highly sugary everyday which just makes me want MORE.

Morning all! Just checking in as it's my first day today so I'm new to all this. Endured breakfast this morning and wondering how I'll make it to 7pm, hopefully I'll be busy enough at work to not even notice, then of course there'll be the delight of my 3 wild things after school...

Bayliss1 · 05/11/2013 08:39

Hi Wildthing...good luck!

Been on the scales and I've lost 5lbs! I'm really chuffed! I am in love with this 'diet!' Going to enjoy my first cuppa on my NFD. Good luck to all the fasters today x

BsshBossh · 05/11/2013 08:42

Well done losers!!! Many more successful fasters this week compared to half term :).

NFD for me today so I am baking cheese and smoked ham muffins for DD's dinner (and my late lunch). Then cardamon chicken and spinach curry for DH and my dinner tonight.

Preciousdaisybear · 05/11/2013 08:49

Oh frabjous day! Calloo callay! I have left the 12 stone mark behind and ha ve entered the 11s. So happy (skipping around like Snoopy). At this rate I might even look presentable in a swimming cossie when DS3 starts lessons in Jan Grin

rubbishfamily333 · 05/11/2013 09:07

Bayliss - when was the last time you weighed yourself?

Well done with all the losses. Grin I'm feeling happy today (I'm no where near my goal weight but it feels possible)

Good luck fasters today! And to the new people, if u can do it anyone can! I'm normally so greedy Confused

Well I've put a Thai curry in the slow cooker so I can look forward to that tonight! I hope it comes out nice as I'm not very successful with the slow cooker!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 05/11/2013 09:33

Welcome back HarryS and Hi WildThings!

BigChoc did the wet nappy make you fall off your bike and bang your head last night???

I take your challenge and I say yes to giving up sugar/choc/biscuits/cakes! I will keep the little bit (half tsp)I have in my coffee as I only have couple cups a day and that is a big fd crutch for me. Ice-cream I will ditch weekdays and allow sat/sun only. Wine (any alcohol) I am completely cutting out until Christmas. I might limit the rest of sweet junk to sat/suns only - more likely to succeed if I tell myself I can have something to look forward to at end of week. More likely to not want it then too!!

I completely agree that eating sugar just makes you crave more, and was just saying to dp last night that it had had that effect on me, growing worse as last week went on.

We could call it 'No (insert) November'

Thanks Dotty will take a look.

Fd here and I am so looking forward to the cleansed feeling I will have come tonight after my lovely light healthy and usually quite original/interesting fd meal. Depending on how feel might do a rollover tmw as would like a 4:3 this week.

So who's giving up what and when/for how long??

Me:
No booze til Christmas (week before prob)
No biscuits/cake/choc/sugary snacks except sat/sun November.
No ice-cream except sat/sun November.

BRING ON THE CRASH!!!!!!!!!! Grin Grin

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 05/11/2013 09:48

WildThings I don't know what your circumstances are but if you find you really struggle today, perhaps try avoiding breakfast next time. A lot of us swear by fact that once we start eating on a fd it tends to open flood gates. Especially if it is anything carby. Riding out the waves until later in day, when you have less time left in which to fail Grin, can make it easier.

A lot of advice will have been posted over and over again, but is always worth reminding or mentioning for newbies. Remember that hunger comes in waves. It will not keep getting bigger and bigger all day. It will come, then it will pass. Just drink lots and try to keep busy through a wave. You will suddenly find yourself feeling fine again. Cannot say this enough though ...... Drink loads - whatever it is - it will help.

....and on that note.....

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 05/11/2013 09:49

............. DRINK WATER ............

BetsyBell · 05/11/2013 10:02

……. CLENCH ……!

BetsyBell · 05/11/2013 10:11

Congratulations Preciousdaisybear, I'm sure it won't be long before you'll be seeing the 10s :)

HarryStottle Sounds like you're off to a cracking (re)start!

Off to watch some Lustig now...

OP posts:
CuckooAtchooUhOh · 05/11/2013 10:23

... thanks Betsy! Got distracted there. Was considering a CLENCH AND DRINK for a bit of extended hold. We can mix it up! Might be a challenge depending on how far from kettle/tap/glass we are Grin

Am going to have a look through those links. I watched a docu on sugar last year/year before. Think it might've been one of those The Men Who Made Us programmes. Largely based in America from memory - could that be same guy? Absolutely fascinating and jaw dropping stuff. Makes you realise just how far removed our eating habits have become from what our bodies actually need! And that this is the norm for generations of people now! They're basically just drug dealers feeding us junkies!

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 05/11/2013 10:38

Morning everyone

Despite forgetting to reduce my TDEE for most of last week, I've still lost another pound, and over the moon about that!

I've been following this WOE for 8 weeks now and so far have always fasted on the same days, but only twice a week.

Can anyone tell me is it ok to try 4:3 for a week and then back to 5:2 if I want a booster session?

Is this messing with the metabolism too much?

MrsFlorrick · 05/11/2013 10:43

Morning everyone!! Grin

Cookoo. Grin I've downloaded Jillians Ripped in 30 last night and will shortly be having a go. Bit scared!

My mini fast went well yesterday despite tiredness. Came in under 1000.

It's mean to be a proper FD here today. Only had a couple of cups of tea so far and a coffee. Hopefully I can do it today. Grin

Feel like an awful mum today. I shouted at DC this morning. I mean really shouting full volume. They were in school uniform (pre school uniform for DS but still) and throwing milky cereal at each other and refusing to stop whilst being told more than 10 times. I lost the plot completelySad. Both needed fresh uniforms on and it has taken me over an hour to clean kitchen/diner just now.

They are just not listening at the moment. It's very annoying. It's like I don't exist when I tell them and unless I am screaming like a fishwife, nobody takes any notice (not of time out/ toys confiscated etc etc only me shouting does anything). I am so so Sad now. I don't want it like this. And I don't know how to improve things just now.

WannaBeCareerWoman · 05/11/2013 10:46

Morning everyone and good luck to those on FDs today. HArry you did 5 fasting days Shock?

BetsyBell · 05/11/2013 10:52

Bennetgirl It's fine to mix it up with 4:3 :) The flexibility of this WOE is it's strength.
