Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Looking for a bit of advice oh wise fitness peeps...

Have just had a look at hoops on amazon and am a bit confused at the amount of options - what are you all using, haven't done hooping before but I need things I can do at home, already have a skipping rope.....

TIA

WannaBeCareerWoman · 04/11/2013 20:40

Hey all Grin and thanks for the welcome. Annie, my first day did not go all that great. I kinda had a small portion of stew for lunch and then continued snacking on it. Oh well, I am trying to tell myself that I am easing into the idea. But with the kind support of you guys (I'll come begging for some slaps), I must stay focused on Wednesday.

Bssh THAT is a success! And an encouraging story. I'll look up to you though my struggles Grin.

Hey Cookoo - my starting weight is something like 14 stone - 90 kg. Getting it down to twelwe would be a success! And totally in for a race to Christmas, though not sure what's achevable. 1.5 stone? Actually, if I got down to 82 kg that would be my pre pregnancy weight. Not great, but better than this...

MrsFlorick sorry you had a bad day. I cannot deal with exhaustion!

Well done fasters, one day I will join you in success...

BTW, any tips on eating with DCs around? Do you cook together, separately...?

WilsonFrickett · 04/11/2013 20:48

Pants. 2 oatcakes just fell in to my mouth. But that was better than what I actually wanted to eat (bread and butter). Still, I was 50 calls under so not too much of a disaster? does not need to hear how many calls in an oatcake

WilsonFrickett · 04/11/2013 20:51

wannabe my DS is a fussy eater and we don't always eat together as a family as DH gets home late often. So I tend to plan fds round that. DS swims on a Wed for eg, which means he has to eat too early for the rest of us, so I usually fast then. And same on my other FD, I cook separately for me and DH.

DH isn't doing 5:2 but it's easy enough to add some carbs in to his portion, so he more or less eats the same as me + carbs.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/11/2013 20:54

Hollo What wonderful news re your SIL. Now you can all relax.

Successful FD, sounds like everyone did well. Wine to us all.

At work, my evil neighbour was eating freshly baked sesame rolls with cheese, which all smelled so georgeous that I was dripping drool over my keyboard (I never lust after sweet junk on FDs, just bread, pasta etc).

I biked to evening training in my warmest ski trousers & anorak, but it was like riding into a freezing water cannon. I was totally soaked, like sitting in a gigantic wet freezing nappy with a sopping towel on my shoulders.
Thankfully, now back home with a Brew. NFD tomorrow !

BigChocFrenzy · 04/11/2013 21:02

WannaBe It gets much easier after a few FDs. Just ease into FDs, maybe aim for 7-800 cals at first and allow yourself 3 meals.
If you can manage under 1000 twice a week, it is a good starting calorie deficit.
Good luck for Wednesday !

WannaBeCareerWoman · 04/11/2013 21:19

Thanks Wilson and BigChox, well done on your FDs!. And I really think the oatcakes aren't too much of a disaster. No more though!

I am thinking of getting COOK frozen meals for my FDs. I'll eat separately from the rest of the family, but that may be easier than counting their calories... FD is 500 cals, right?

Southeastdweller · 04/11/2013 21:30

Hi folks. Well done everyone for fasting today, a much better day than last Thursday!

No craving comfort food today which I think is due to work being so busy. Also have the prospect of moving later in the month on my mind.

Is anyone else fasting tomorrow with me?

Southeastdweller · 04/11/2013 21:31

Wilson Yes, 500 cals for women is the guide Dr M and Mimi suggest to fast on per day.

Emmabryant123 · 04/11/2013 21:47

Unplanned fast yesterday due to dd being taken ill. Felt to sick to eat so just had a tin of soup about 9pm last night so today was a nfd.
Had ham n egg mayo rolls at work . And a banana.
Dinner was chicken kievs, jacket pot, corn cob and asparagus
.
Taking to work tomorrow.
Egg mayo n ham roll
Chicken club (chicken, bacon, cheese n mayo) roll. Banana.
Dinner not sure.

Wednesday or Thursday will be a fast day.

Well done to all the Monday fasters today.

MrsFlorrick · 04/11/2013 21:48

The Daily Fail has an article lifted straight from Breadandwines link to that fitness calculator. Hmm

Wish they could get their own material Hmm

BigChocFrenzy · 04/11/2013 21:49

Annie Skipping is an excellent workout, for cardio and for strengthening bones, so do use your rope.
Try using your own body weight to tone: squats, situps, press-ups are classics for good reason.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/11/2013 22:02

Emma I do hope your dd is much better now. Relax and enjoy your NFD tomorrow.

MrsF That publication is worth less than used loo paper. However, I expected more of the authors, if they are re-cycling from our thread. Too lazy to find their own loo paper ?

Night all. Luck to any Tuesday FDers.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 04/11/2013 22:09

I did it.

I have had 470 cals so far, so am having a celebratery Options hot choc. This will take me to 508 cals.

I know I can do this.

Tomorrow's plan is to stick to 500 cals at work and have the rest when Im home.

rubbishfamily333 · 04/11/2013 22:21

Biscuits - snap Grin I have just decided to have an option hot chocolate too which will take me to 509 cals :)

postmanpatscat · 04/11/2013 22:48

Survived my first FD in several weeks...ate my wrap after school, avoided all other food and hit the gym and ran for an hour (about 9.4k). Hope for something more encouraging on the scales tomorrow! Also sort of TOTM for me...after my recent prolonged 20 day period, I took hormone tablets while on holiday so it has now started as predicted but my cycle is all over the place. I was growling at everyone yesterday so maybe this is why! That and post-holiday comedown I think.

BsshBossh · 04/11/2013 23:11

Oh Emma your poor DD. How is she now?

WannaBe my DD eats dinner too early for me so we don't eat together on a school night. I wait until DH comes home and eat around 9 pm which suits me very well on FDs and NFDs. I seem to find it no problem preparing her meals or composting her leftovers on FDs.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 04/11/2013 23:35

Wannabe 90kgs down to 82 is 17lb by Christmas. Whilst I wouldn't say it is impossible, please bear in mind average weight loss with this woe is 1-2lb week. That is providing you stick to your fast day limits, and also try not to overeat on nfd's.

Things to bear in mind: everybody loses at different rate; genetics will have final say!
A lot of people tend to have a bigger initial loss but will then level out to slower loss rate.
Regardless of numbers on scales, if you stick to the plan, you will definitely look and feel much slimmer come Christmas. This will have a much bigger impact than you can prob appreciate now. We weight 'watchers' tend to measure everything with numbers on scales. But it is actually what you see with own eyes in mirror, notice in how your clothes fit, and measure in inches round your body that will be the true tell of your success (not to mention put a great big smile on your face!).

No matter what - you won't regret getting stuck in!

Postman Well Done!! The horse has been remounted!

somewherebecomingrain · 05/11/2013 05:46

hollo great news re sil.
bigchoc Lols re sopping nappy. Sounds awful! Must've been lovely to get warm. Great pic.
cuckoo belated thanks for motivational speech.
biscuit WELL DONE!!! I'm so pleased you are persevering. It's a great feeling of achievement on the day and every day and brings higher energy and all sorts of benefits as well as weight loss.

So a daily mail journalist could've been reading my posts? How strange.

So last night treated myself to GBBO. French week. Up early this am for no good reason - kids asleep - hydrating to stop bingeing which is really driven by wanting the water in the food.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2013 06:37

Well done biscuits, rubbish, postman ! Enjoy the NFD today.

Just had an enormous breakfast of oat bran, flaxmeal & almond milk, veg juice, sprouted bread, cheese, tomatoes, roast garlic cloves (!) . Must be due to the frozen nappy trauma last night. I usually skip breakfast, so no supper tonight instead.

Good fasting to any tuesday FDers.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2013 06:50

Hi cuckoo Prepare yourself for a shock:
Having succumbed to several choc cookies after v early huge breakfast today
Blush
I decided to give up chox, ice cream, all sweet junk for an entire week !!!
(MN buddies being revived with choc-scented smelling salts. Maybe I should give up cabbage instead ?)
So, you will have to carry the B&J flag alone this week. Are you woman enough for this tough job? Can I hold out, or will I succumb amid public shame ? Answers in this space next Tuesday.

BetsyBell · 05/11/2013 07:11

bigchoc I'll join you in that! I do a no sugar thing a couple of times a year and I guess I must be due for another one anyway... Though for a real challenge it ought to be 2 weeks - would you be up for that? It takes that long for the cravings to really go...

After that you may need to name change!

OP posts:
BetsyBell · 05/11/2013 07:14

I think Cuckoo needs to try and give up her ice cream habit for 2 weeks too... What do you say ladies - can you handle it?

We should all go and watch Robert Lustig's lecture on sugar to remind ourselves why this is a good idea - shake off the shackles of the addictive white crystles...
