The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Phew! Finally caught up with thread (had to abandon 1/2 of thread 27 as i couldn't read faster than u lot were posting! Have also had a couple of relaxed weeks as wasn't feeling it with autumn & clock change. Have tried to be mindful & have still lost so happy with that. Only 0.1lb off 2 stones lost this morning, so a bit Angry as i was v excited about hitting that mark. Still, onwards & downwards, current aim for 9st dead & will reassess then... Also 1 week til 6 monthiversary, so at least that will be a nice round amount for then.

We're doing 30 day plank challenge at work, so that's my exercise this month along with some hooping (managed over 15 mins on day 1 but nothing last 4 due to bruises. Got mine from Argos for £15 whoever asked). Also dd on back does not help plank times, may save that for next month to be hardcore :)

mrsf totally feel your pain, totm has hit here too and dd has been yowling the last 3 nights (normally a great sleeper so :( for her & me!). Sorry a bit me me me, keep up the PMA all & let us know how you're getting on, great to here so many successes & to see all newbies and delurkers joining in :)

Dotty342kids · 04/11/2013 16:13

lermontova it's partly a health thing eg. our bodies should be able to go at least the 4hrs or so in between meals (our parents, grandparents and ancestors all managed fine Smile) and partly because snacking just uses up calories unnecessarily. They could be put to far better use in a lovely meal Smile

Dotty342kids · 04/11/2013 16:15

ooh, for any wannabe hoopers............ mine comes in sections and to start with I thought it was too big so had it with one section removed. Put the extra section back in this morning and oh, what a revelation! So much easier. Could have hooped for hours if it wasn't for the small matter of getting the kids to school Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 04/11/2013 16:59

lermontova "No snacks" holds for both FDs and NFDs. When the stomach is empty with not much insulin around, the body switches to repair mode. So, there are probably health benefits in longer periods without food.

Also, if we dare snack, talkinpeace will shout at us
Smile

Talkinpeace · 04/11/2013 16:59

lermontova
snacking was invented in the early 1970's by food companies to shift more "product"
It did not exist before that - you ate your breakfast, lunch and supper and managed to go four hours without putting more into your system.
Giving your digestion a break allows the whole system to work better and as dotty says, if you just eat at meal times then those meals can be more substantial.
Snacking still does not exist in most countries - the ones without obesity and type 2 diabetes problems in fact Wink

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 04/11/2013 17:01

Dotty where did you get your hoop from? Are you all using same kind?? I have got to get in on this hooping, as it sounds so easy to fit in whilst watching telly and can make it a group activity with dd.

MrsF it's just totm. You are not fat. You are lean mean JM channelling machine! I'm at tail end, thank gawd.

No wonder they used to call it the curse! All you gals there or pending Brew Thanks [hot water bottle]

Bayliss1 · 04/11/2013 17:05

Hey fellow FDers! I'm on my 3rd FDin a week and feel great! Even had 2 compliments over last 2 days with people saying I lionlike I've lost weight! (I have got 3 1/2 stone to lose though so a lot to go on!) The comments have given me a much needed boost. My tummy feels like its verb sucked in. I'm certainly a fan of this way of eating right now! Smile It's good to read the success stories! Your posts are also very entertaining at times!!

hollolew2 · 04/11/2013 17:24

Just checking in FD today but been at hospital all day with the sis in law she had her last chemo ( for lymphoma) and her MRI has come back clear do she is now cancer free yippee ! Was starving and went to the freezer and discovered that Linda McCartney red onion sausages are only 64 calories each so had 3 with some mashed cauliflower ( it was yummy) pretending it was real sausage and mash ! All in all a good day!

BsshBossh · 04/11/2013 17:32

Ack, another one here on TOM.

BsshBossh · 04/11/2013 17:36

hollo fab fab fab news about your SIL. What a relief for you all!
Ref. your mashed cauli - do you just chop up, cook then mash? Do you add anything else to it?

Bayliss how are you finding your NFDs on 4:3 - do you eat more on them because of the extra fast day?

rubbishfamily333 · 04/11/2013 17:43

Well so far I have had my protien shake and a coke zero! Lemon water and lots of water.

I've managed quite well today and I think I've been happier and more focused at work today rather than last Monday where the hunger was stopping me from concentrating.

I am feeling like I would like to try 4:3 bug unsure as I don't work Wednesdays and I find that when I'm at home I want to eat.

Dinner is pork loins with veg again. After that I will have round about 80cals left. Hmm what to eat? Last week had weetabix in the evening and it was filling but I don't have enough calories left today!

hollolew2 · 04/11/2013 17:51

Bssh I used a tablespoon of sainsburys be good to yourself sour cream ( worked out at around 30 cals) aromat seasoning and black pepper came out really creamy !

Bayliss1 · 04/11/2013 17:56

Although I've done 3 FDs in the last 7 days, I'm only doing 5:2 as my week starts on Monday. I've found it really easy though and have stuck with my TDEE on other days. I've actually found it difficult some days to eat all my calories! Looking forward (I think!) to weigh in tomorrow! I hope my hard work has paid off!

rubbishfamily333 · 04/11/2013 18:02

Bayliss - sounds like you are doing very well Grin

I havnt been sticking to my tdee all the time, I won't over massively on two days so I'm not expecting any loss this week! But I hope to loose soon! Hmm

lermontova · 04/11/2013 18:04

talkinpeace, Dotty, Big Choc thanks guys! now I think about it, we didn't have snacks as kids, just breakfast, lunch and tea, and then a glass of milk and a biscuit (nothing exciting, digestive on a good day) in the evening, and sweetie night was the only time we got any chocolate. I really like eating though so this will be a hard habit to break. If only there were more meals in the day.

WilsonFrickett · 04/11/2013 18:08

rubbish I think the first time you do one you're like 'woah! Hunger! All I can think about is HUNGER!' but then as you settle in it's like 'oh, hunger pang, that will go away in a second '. It is very liberating to realise if you are hungry nothing happens. You don't die, or faint, or fall over. You just feel hungry.

DH has come home not well, so don't know whether to eat now with DS or wait a bit to see if DH is going to want anything...hmmm...

Not2bObvious · 04/11/2013 18:11

Hi all, it's taken me half an hour to catch up on the posts since last night - my we are a chatty bunch, isn't it great Grin Great news Hollo, delighted to hear good news.
Seems like there are loads of us fasting today as usual - I'm having an unintentional fast day myself. I was holding off til tomorrow as I had a work lunch but it didn't happen so I decided to fire ahead with an impromptu mini fast - isn't it great you can do things like that? It's not going to be a 500 day but I'm pleased to have made the effort.
Time for small roast chicken dinner, about 250 cals - and an orange for pud, kitchen then closed - nice one!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 04/11/2013 18:42

Hollo Wine to your sis in law. Massive congrats, what a major relief that must be for you all.

Not2be you've just summed up the positivity this woe invokes. No effort, however small, is wasted. But the flexibility to change course of a day or week to suit just makes all the difference. This is definitely the 'Friendly Diet' TM patent pending etc etc Mimi!! :p

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 04/11/2013 18:48

Rubbish why don't you just give it a bash without any expectations. If you start day telling yourself you can eat if you want to, it may just trick mind into turning nose up and saying .. No thanks, just pass me another drink!

Nothing to lose and everything to gain (of a non fat variety!).

hollolew2 · 04/11/2013 19:06

Bssh, Not & cuckoo thank you for your good wishes x

somewherebecomingrain · 04/11/2013 19:08

650 cals. It's been v easy after the recent binge (Sunday was 3700!!!).

Could've done less but got to do some Work this eve so had a generous 500-cal dinner.

Feel totally normal and not at all hungry. Greedy, yes. But not hungry.

BetsyBell · 04/11/2013 19:12

Hello everyone, hope all you fasters have had a good one.

I stopped eating on Sunday (after a truly massive roast) at 3pm and broke my fast at 1pm today with 100cals of soup, then 250cals of different soup and an apple for dinner at 6. I needed a good one today, like many of us half term seemed to turn into a bit of a disaster area as far as eating was concerned.

I love how much I look forward to Monday fasts. I used to find it hard to motivate myself to get back to healthy eating after a few days of holiday-style eating but a fast day is like a full stop and a reset button all in one.

Hollo Flowers and Wine, what a relief for you all.
Love the idea of cauliflower mash. Cauliflower is ace isn't it? I always forget how marvellous it is.

OP posts:
annielewis · 04/11/2013 20:01

Hollo Cake to your SIL - great news!

I have actually had quite a good day today, come in at around 550 cals I think but have had a really busy day cleaning and gardening so have burned a lot of it off according to MFP!

Does cauli mash give you the farts??? :)

Talkinpeace · 04/11/2013 20:15

is officially stuffed.
leftovers frittata and then apples that we got for free at Wisley last week.
probably around 650 calories ish

BsshBossh · 04/11/2013 20:25

About to break my fast with a mug of soup, in front of some TV food porn. Hmmm, which to choose from catch up TV: Paul Hollywood, Jamie, Tom K, Rick Stein...? And tomorrow - 2 NFDs! But absolutely no overshooting my TDEE. But I'm exercising again so my TDEE goes back up this week. Hurrah!
