Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

We can do this!

BsshBossh · 04/11/2013 12:13

Right, in lieu of lunch I'm off to the gym. Gorgeous weather here in London so I'm going to enjoy my walk there. First time back in the gym since I sprained something in my buttock Blush a fortnight ago so a) will be taking it easy but b) am looking forward to getting fit again. Only cardio though - need to stay away from the weights until my muscle/nerve is fully recovered .

lucyintheskywithdinos · 04/11/2013 12:20

Thanks bssh will power dredged up. Lentil and red pepper soup consumed. I think I was mainly cold!

I am constantly freezing so far this year. Tell me it gets easier to cope with!?

MelanieCheeks · 04/11/2013 13:05

For feeling cold - drink hot water!

AphraBehn · 04/11/2013 13:15

Wow, I come on here looking for motivation after a shitty few weeks health wise that led to a 5 week abandonment of 5:2 and a gain of mumble mumble pounds. The first thing I read is Cuckoo's kick up the arse motivational speech!

Thank you. 5 weeks ago I had lost a stone in 13 weeks and found FDs a breeze. I can get there again.

PoshPaula · 04/11/2013 13:19

I've had a terrible boozy weekend eating way too much and now am fasting. I really feel bad that I fell off the wagon, food wise and now am desperate to regain that slim feeling I had before...

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 04/11/2013 13:19

So its lunch and I've just eaten a whole 43 calories. It will get me through to 5PM. I've also drank a litre of water already. Work is just as crap as it was before, but I've still held back from the huge calories.

Today is going to be a success.

Will post later, its difficult to post on my phone.

Dotty342kids · 04/11/2013 13:21

postman that made me feel better for a millisecond until I remembered that you're about 2 stone lighter than me already! Smile

Husband is prowling around complaining of hunger. It's going to be a loooong afternoon.

Bssh, that's very impressive. If work weren't so manic today, after a week off, I'd go out for a walk as the sun is shining and it looks lovely. Might have to compromise by going into the garden and having ten mins chatting to my chickens instead Smile. Are you suffering from Diwali overload today too?

annielewis · 04/11/2013 13:25

Hi all other fasters - hope you're managing to cling on to the FD Wagon!!

I have been cleaning like a demon all morning to keep my mind off food, even managed to ignore the kids lunchy leftover....

At this rate by Christmas I will be a much skinnier person living in a very sparkly clean house! Whats not to love??

Off to do some gardening now to occupy DD and let DS have a nap in his buggy out there too.

Bit off fresh air should blow the cobwebs away.

Can't wait until yummy salmon dinner, feeling very virtuous right now.... (ignores rumbly tummy...)

Talkinpeace · 04/11/2013 13:30

trulymadly
colds etc probably coincidence. But as a precaution try to up your green veg and protein to give yourself a boost.

Fasting today. 3/4 mile swim, yoga, bodypump
Yoga teacher also fasting - her brain more fuddled than mine!

more tea beckons

BigChocFrenzy · 04/11/2013 13:37

FD and training rest day, so aiming for sub-500 ultra-low carb today. Good luck to other FDers; everyone seems to be doing ok so far

Cuckoo Thanks for Monday kick up the arse.

To further motivate myself, I have uploaded my "before" photo. Warning: it looks really silly because we were doing fierce boxing poses in the changing room !
Grin
However, the tight tights show the yuk tum flab I must loose, as well as the muscle to keep. BTW: we train in tank tops, so I never bare my gut in the gym itself.
I'm BMI 23, but I must lose the tum that sneaked in during my 50s.

Dotty342kids · 04/11/2013 13:41

chocfrenzy you look AMAZING! If I looked that good now I'd be happy Grin
wow.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/11/2013 13:43

Checking in. Exactly 52 weeks ago my daughter and I came back from Paris and I weighed 11.9. Started this 1 July. On Saturday I weighed in at 10.4. So all I want for X* is to see the 9's - alongside rubbish and wilson We can do this. PS. Not fasting today as kids still off but have done Body Attack this morning and hoping to come in about half TDEE (800 cals)

BigChocFrenzy · 04/11/2013 13:45

Thanks Dotty but I think you need SpecSavers.
I gained 4 inches since age 50, lost 2 ins with 52 in spring and absolutely must lose remaining 2 ins ASAP. I really hate pinching my inches.
Wish me luck !

WannaBeCareerWoman · 04/11/2013 13:59

Hi guys,

So I am trying to read and get to know everyone, although the thread is moving fast! So I may not post much until I feel like I can! But someone asked me to say a bit about myself. So here it goes:
I started my first day of fasting today and so far had a couple of pickles. I am going to try and do 4:3, fasting Monday, Wednesday, Friday. BMI about 32. It would be great to at least get that BMI to less than 30. I do some Pilates and am thinking about starting running. I am really kicking myself for letting myself go fitness wise. That's it for now! I'll lurk for a bit and see how everyone goes, if you'll have me!

BsshBossh · 04/11/2013 14:29

Dotty just back from the gym - the walk there and back was amazing, crisp, bright and autumnal. No Diwali overload for us (I'm Catholic, DH is an athiest and my mum is a Bengali Hindu meaning she celebrates Kali puja that goes on at same time as Diwali) but we enjoyed the fireworks all around :)

annielewis · 04/11/2013 14:30

Hi WannaBe and welcome! I am a newbie on here too and lurked for aaaages before taking the plunge and posting! It is great for advice from all the others and good to keep you focussed on FD's.

Have you checked out the other links in the OP? The recipe one is good for some inspiration.......

Hows your first FD going? I am thinking of doing 4:3 this week too, still trying to work out my days though...

Talkinpeace · 04/11/2013 14:31

Hi there Wannabe good luck on getting to know everyone - there are hundreds of us and even long standing posters like me fail dismally remembering everybody's back stories.
And yes, you will definitely be able to get down to BMI beginning with a 2. You just have to remember that whatever you really crave today you can eat tomorrow Grin except snacks Wink
and yes, getting fit means that the body that emerges is ready toned ....

BsshBossh · 04/11/2013 14:32

lucy well done. I'm nearly 9 months into 5:2 and am still feeling the cold terribly (sorry!). And I hate hate hate feeling cold.

BsshBossh · 04/11/2013 14:41

Lovely to hear more from you WannaBe. I started at BMI 36 and am now BMI 22 in 1.5 years so: you can do it. My big tip is consistency and patience, especially through the inevitable stalls.

BigChoc I agree with Dotty, you look amazing. I especially love the muscle tone in your arms!

More black coffee for me, then a shower, then pick up DD. Busy busy busy - perfect for an FD.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 04/11/2013 15:07

Soooo lovely to read so many positive posts! Bloomin Well Done all you Monday fasters!

Boozers.... I totes agree, fasting on wine belly not good (nausea face). I haven't drunk so much wine for months and months as did yesterday! Not good. Today, I am suffering! Not hangover as such, just a sugary belchy tum! Eating sensibly today, and no more than need, but really looking forward to a good old fast tmw.

Am 4:3 at least 2 out 4 weeks until Christmas. Pilates and running will be my exercise. Wannabecar if you want company - you've got it! Are you going to share your start weight?? Whatever you need to achieve, somebody here will have done it/is doing it.

Whether celebrate Christmas or not; year end is a good goal for all, especially complete new starters. A LOT can change between now and then. As far as school goes, there are no more distractions so good time to get our heads down and go for it!

BigChoc Woot Wooooooooooo!! You is one hot mama! I agree with above comments. Your skin looks amazing too!

BigChocFrenzy · 04/11/2013 15:13

Bssh You always cheer me up with your massive BMI change !
Cuckoo Thanks, you helped my moral too
Our MN thread is so supportive and helpful.

My training partners are mostly 30 years younger, so they still look like fitness models. Gaining inches / weight in your 50s increases danger of several nasty things. 52 is definitely my WOL

MrsFlorrick · 04/11/2013 15:14

Hello everyone.

Bigchocfrenzy. You look amazing!!! Your body is far better than mine and I'm "only" 40.

It's a mini fast day here. It was going to be an FD but DD was up 6 times last night and DS twice so I've had about 4 hours of very interupted sleep. Can't face a full on Fd. That said all I've had are 2 coffees and a leek omelette. Because the coffees were nspresso lattes with 100ml of milk each that's 130cals right there.

Anyway so far today I'm at 339 cals

Roast chicken for dinner. I am having cabbage and chicken and the DC will have roast potatoes as well. It will be more than 500 cals so a mini fast.

If I can summon the energy I will work out once DC are in bed.

I am actually feeling fat today. Odd because I have maintained and I'm so close to goal. That said its TOMT and I am shattered.

Waiting for DD at school. d
DS is sleeping in the car. Grrr. I could do a nap!!

Anyway I will be back later Grin

lermontova · 04/11/2013 16:03

Thanks for the kick up the bum last week guys. I did a successful FD on Friday and it's best not to think about the weekend. FD today is going well on just a cup of tea and body pump class later before a carton of Covent Garden soup for dinner.

Can I ask, what is the thing with no snacks? Is it just about trying to leave as long between meals as possible or is there some other reason? And is this just on fast days or general life?
