Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Planning on hot drinks only til tea time and then steamed veg and chicken or fish for dinner. Salad leaves with cucumber and cottage cheese if I'm starved mid afternoon...........

How about you??

rubbishfamily333 · 03/11/2013 23:38

Wilsonfricket glad to have a twin Grin what is your goal weight? And at what weight do you feel comfortable?

Also how many calories have you set yourself per day?

Fd tomorrow so hopefully will start loosing soon. It will be interesting to see how our results differ Grin

WilsonFrickett · 04/11/2013 00:06

Goal weight is something beginning with 9 ... I'm not sure exactly. I'd like to end up around 9 and a half stone but really getting to 9 something is my focus. On fast days I pretty much stick to the 500. NFd is what I need to start tracking, my tdee came out around 1600.

(Bossy Drill Sergeant voice that would make Jillian Michaels quake in her pelvic destroying footwear......)

"LISTEN UP LOSERS.....

It's been half term. It's been tough. Some of us are fast day failures; Some of us are half term over eaters of such epic proportions we would make Tip (THAT IS TIP NOT FRICKIN' MIMI) roll in her snack free armchair!

Let's face it, Mondays are shit; there are no two ways about it. Add to that, it's first one back from half term. Add to that, it was a junk food nightmare half term with Halloween and Guy Fawkes night.

This week will be tough. But this Monday will be EVIL. So, you lovely, lovely, gorgeous caterpillars, just do the best you can.

Let's give it a bash today. But, if we fail, let's not dwell. It is 'Shitty Monday' of Shitty post Half Term Week. We shall try, and a lot of us may fail. Let's just think of this as 'ease back in week'.

Any improvements on last week = success.
Any weight loss on last week = success.
Any maintained weight = success.
Any healthier eating/drinking habits with or without weight loss = success.
Any physical activity equal to or more than the norm = success.
Any positive mental attitude to yourself and/or body image = success.
Any weight gain = a good reason to stay here and investigate/fight it/ stay determined.

Good luck Fasters, and may the famine reaction activation not be with you!

Wilson - I will also be happy to be a weight starting with a 9. I havnt been 9 anything for years now!

Well fasting today and woke up thinking am I crazy? I've been off work for days and its bound to be a stressful day! And I don't even drink coffee ConfusedConfused

postmanpatscat · 04/11/2013 07:46

Morning all! Hope you had a good half term, I was sunning myself in Fujairah (near Dubai) and gained 2.5kgs despite running 5 miles every day!!

So, fasting today. I thought yesterday's much more reasonable food intake might have seen a slight downward shift, but no, I was the same this morning as I was on Sunday morning!

lucyintheskywithdinos · 04/11/2013 08:20

Joining in, even though I find Monday FDs hard. I have a tub of soup for lunch and am going to make stir fry for dinner.

I will also do my kettle bell workout after this cuppa.

cuckoo thank you! I feel kicked up the arse an appropriate amount!

Right, I would like people's tips for losing the last bit. I've been stuck here for three weeks now and I don't want to get complacent. I also want to be there, or nearly there by Christmas.

annielewis · 04/11/2013 09:11

Hows everyone doing so far? I am feeling a bit dubious already! Think I need to have a big cleaning session or clear out session or something that will keep me distracted and occupied!

Have had pint of lemon water and a coffee so far.

Good luck with Shitty Monday everyone!

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 04/11/2013 09:24

FD here too, and it is indeed shitty Monday

Got menstrual cramps like not had in years, and I just want to eat crap and curl up in bed.

I won't though, am going to have some more water then crack on with the Shred DVD, clean up the bombsite that is my house and then possibly go for a run.

Endorphines will get me through this

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 04/11/2013 09:32

Okay, so..... In the spirit of the Shitty Monday speech, I am going to hold myself up and say a big fat YES to feeling dubious. Feeling bit sicky today, from a weekend of too much vino and silly amounts/kinds of food.

But! - that is fine. No big surprise really. So to get myself off to best start, I am declaring this a sensible nfd/mini fast. Will eat as much as need of any nutritious, wholesome food. Give my body a recovery day, then straight into an awesome fd tmw. Followed by another later in week, or maybe 2 consecutive days. I don't feel bad. I have accepted this is easiest, most likely to end in successful result for the week overall, way to do it. I am at peace next to the toaster.

Good luck everybody. And remember this is a woe for life, not a punishment. Enjoy!

BsshBossh · 04/11/2013 09:34

Another Monday faster signing in. I must be a rare breed as I love Mondays and I love Monday fasts: I like getting back into my usual working and exercise routine come Mondays and I always welcome a fast to cleanse my system from indulgent weekends.

Started the day with water, then black coffee and now sitting at my desk, ready to work, with mug of lovely green tea. Hopefully will be liquid-only today. Will check in later.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 04/11/2013 09:42

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 04/11/2013 10:07

Morning all - struggling to keep up with the thread there are so many posts!

NFD here, but getting my mind in gear for this week and planning for the rest of the week.

wrigglebum · 04/11/2013 10:16

Just checking in for Monday fast. Didn't do one last week (half term plus DH off work too), yet despite yesterday's big eating I'm still down. I'm sitting at just under 9st4 now. Still doing my Jillian workouts and mostly not snacking.

I was a one meal a day faster but I've gone back to two as it makes me more pleasant (plus I'm less worried if I go over now I've gone past target). My FD lunch of choice is loads of pickled veg with a protein, today I've got some smoked trout. Very filling and a big flavour hit to satisfy. Maybe a square of dark chocolate after too if I fancy it- stocked up on very dark choc at Lidl the other day. I like a square after lunch and dinner, and if I'm really craving a snack and just can't fight it. Because I know I'm having good chocolate each day I don't feel the need to stuff my face with chocolate bars at other times.

WilsonFrickett · 04/11/2013 10:43

Also feeling a bit shitty Monday, I got all complacent and allowed myself a couple of wines last night, thinking I had the FD sussed. FD on a wine stomach SUCKS! But I will persevere as it is entirely self-inflicted. Off for another green tea then have to make a phone call then do some work.

Will break fast at around noon with some veggie bean chilli then I know DH won't be home till late so eat again at 8-ish, veggie stir fry. Actually, make that veg and prawn, will need some protein.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 04/11/2013 11:14

Struggling. The children are eating crisps and DD3 keeps offering them to me.

Am breaking fast at 12. Bloody starving.

BsshBossh · 04/11/2013 11:23

lucy call on all your reserves of willpower! Also, do the kids need crisps? Could you limit them to healthy snacks and ring-fence the junky snacks to a certain time in the day or week (that's what I do - DD only allowed to snack on fruit unless special occasion eg Fridays, weekends, on way to gymnastics or swimming class and never in the mornings).

MelanieCheeks · 04/11/2013 11:28

Usual Monday fast here, I enjoy it after the weekend. i was away from home this weekend, so much junk food consumed on the hoof - not good.

I have a tub of home made green soup in with me, made from spinach and cabbage, blended with a herby stock pot. I made it a few weeks ago and froze in indvidual portions. If it's ghastly I have a packet of Clearspring miso soups as a back-up.

Tonight I have running training. DH sometimes cooks something suitable for us both on Mondays - he's inclined to go for ready amde vegetarian patties (musroom, edemame bean, quorn kievs etc). I'd prefer a real piece of chicken, to be honest, but I appreciate the effort he makes to share this with me.

trulymadlydeeply · 04/11/2013 11:35

My health has been dreadful since I started fasting. 2 bugs in 3 weeks and I'm finding it really hard to shake them off. Do you think it's just coincidence? Have hit target weight and am now doing maintenance, but just wondered if anyone else has experienced similar?

somewherebecomingrain · 04/11/2013 11:37

Hello all

Fasting today.

Have put on 4lb over half term but I was never one of the 5:2 miracles, just a plodder.

Fasting today and it feels alright. I'm v interested in this famine reaction idea - it rang very true to me. It's why some fast days are harder than others I think. I definitely get close to the famine reaction or into it and then lose and then can't carry on, even with 5:2. But 5:2 is sufficiently dynamic to allow me to outwit my famine reaction. Though this is getting harder as I get slimmer - think my famine reaction is much more responsive to the least calorie restriction.

Or possibly I'm making excuses.

Anyway famine reaction thoroughly deactivated after half term.

Dotty342kids · 04/11/2013 11:39

Good morning Monday fasters Smile
So, half term, Halloween, baking goodies, a night out with DH and Diwali yesterday all seem to have conspired to make a 2lb gain this morning. AAARGH Shock

Before I'd even got on the scales I'd decided that this week needed to be an MFP week to get me back on track and now I really mean business Smile

We can do this (in motivational Cuckoo style) Grin

postmanpatscat · 04/11/2013 12:11

Made it through to lunchtime on peppermint tea, just made my third cup. I have a wrap with me (quorn slices and iceberg) but I'm going to try to ignore it for now - maybe I'll have it after school finishes so it has begun to digest by the time I get to the gym.

yes, dotty we can do this...and I'll take your 2lb gain and raise you another 3.5lbs on top! Shock Blush Makes me 8lbs heavier than my lowest weight on 5:2, although only about 4lbs away from my normal maintenance weight range.
