Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Coveredinweetabix · 02/11/2013 08:01

Morning all
My two month anniversary of this WOE and a bit disappointed to have weighed in at 10st12 as that's only a loss of 4lbs since I started. But I have lost inches as I am fitting into clothes I haven't worn since before DC1 was born. I guess I need to pay a bit more attention to what I eat on NFDs, at least the mid week ones.
Good luck to today's fasters

Not2bObvious · 02/11/2013 08:32

AhCovered hope you're not feeling too disheartened and that the nsv's of lost inches will spure you on.
I was about the same, taking into account the fact I was 1.5 heavier than you starting (nearly 12.6 - now between 11.2-4 after 5 months)
At around 2 months I had lost about 6 pound but that was up/down. I was definitely overdoing it on nfds, no doubt about it. The few extra hundred cals here and there were conspiring against me. I had to have a word with myself ala Phil Mitchell style and pull it together. I did my mfp pretty religiously, I did regular exercise and I just kept at it.
I haven't had spectacular losses, probably cause I still do over do it but I'm so much better at this woe/WOL.
My initial estimate of 2500 for yesterday's munching was slightly off, thinking closer to 2750 - but today is another day! Sipping a cuppa contemplating a 16:8 - plenty to keep me busy til my massage this avo - at least I'll be safe from food for an hour there!

BigChocFrenzy · 02/11/2013 08:52

Oh, dear. Remember that Vicar of Dibley episode where she wakes up covered in choc wrappers ? After midnight, I found remaining Halloween choc collection .....
Blush Blush Blush !!!
Thursday night was freezing and raining, so hardly any kids came around. Also they expect the full-size bars not minis: mint aeros, Mars .....
Tip for 2014: buy Halloween goodies you don't like. Wonder if there are any choc bars with Brussel sprouts filling ?
Hmm
Seriously, on my "mini-FD" I ate about 6000 cals between 6 pm and 2 am, so today is a full FD. Usual training is 4 pm Saturday and I train fasted Sunday lunchtime, so it will be a 36 hr fast, with just a moderate 700 cal Sunday tea, then slamming kitchen shut for the weekend.
Monday wi is still going to be up - late cals always stay glued to my hips
Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 02/11/2013 08:55

everyone Bin all Halloween remains now ! Do not look at them or wait for kids.
Bssh Your DD shows the decline in the moral fibre of the young. Doesn't like choc !!! (Passes out and lands on massive cushion of choc wrappers)

BigChocFrenzy · 02/11/2013 08:59

covered Inches are more important than lbs, sounds like you've replaced some fat by muscle. So you have improved your health.

Not2bObvious · 02/11/2013 09:28

I wish I could bin them BigChoc but the kids would de distraught (eating them on the slowly is far less traumatic Grin)
I am thinking of melting down all Halloween choc with kids, make some sort of rice crispie cake monstrosity dotted in marshmallow/jellys which I will have no interest in. Ok I'll have to work at having no interest in it but I'm a grown up right? I can control myself right yeah right

DumDum32 · 02/11/2013 09:32

morning all doing a mini FD to make up for midnight cracker snacking feast so no eating until 12/1.

hope u all have a successful FD for those having one today :)

for those on NFD feel free to finish the Halloween candy Grin

covered don't feel dishearted it's a LOSS & loses inches must feel great. I'd love to fit into my old clothes again. keep going & maybe look at changing something in your routine.

DumDum32 · 02/11/2013 09:34

not2bobvious the cake idea sounds awesome & I want some plus a Brew invites herself round whilst no one is looking

Not2bObvious · 02/11/2013 09:38

I know DumDum getting quite excited. Have loads of rolo's so that'll work for the sticky chocolate part, millions of mini aero's although once the bubbles have gone who knows what'll be left.
Oh dear, I think we're in feeder/feedee relationship and I only just met you Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 02/11/2013 09:54

Not2b Very creative idea. Something for a child's taste, but not for those of us with a few self-control issues

rubbishfamily333 · 02/11/2013 10:17

Hey everyone, I'm concerned that I am eating way too much Shock I only did one fd last week ( my first ever) and then seemed a but more mindful the next day. But since then have been going over my calories!

I really do want to loose weight quickly, I think it was talking peace that recommended I calculate my tdee at sedentary at my goal weight which I did and my daily calories is quite low. I settled on a few pounds over my goal weight and daily calories are 1659 which seem perfect fine for me, but not on days like yesterday when I go into binge mode and eat Around 2700 cals ShockShockShock

I am 5.2 feet and currently 10.8 stone and want to be 9 stone eventually but would very pleased at around 9.7stone! What would you set you calories at per day? Also I am 28 and not doing any exercise at the moment Confused

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 02/11/2013 10:42

Weigh day: arrrrrrrrggggghhhhh *#%€$!'

As predicted my first 'plateau' (admittedly only 3rd wk) is 11.10! No change. This weight has always been a staller for me.

Was pre 'movement' because I couldn't wait, but even so!!!

Can only console myself with thoughts that I am still totm so body still deflating from build up bloat; I still look and feel slimmer than last week so maybe numbers aren't everything!

Feeling so sad and low at mo too; could've really done with the lift. But will try to concentrate on positives and all that.

Any Hula Hoopers out there. Does it really improve core? I used to flit about like blue arsed fly, but ever since my back issues started, I def have muscle/movement inhibition. Need to get my core strengthened asap to start moving more freely. I'm sure my almost manic running around was what kept me fit! I know there are other options for core, but I think this would be easier to fit into routine on a regular basis for a quick daily blast, until I get more organised.

rubbish don't be disheartened. Could it be that you are not used to knowing how much you're consuming cal wise, so it's a bit of shock to system? Just ease in, making improvements each week. It will come.

MrsFlorrick · 02/11/2013 11:04

Rubbish
Let me recommend Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred!! It will help you lose weight (set TDEE as seditary and eat to that so the exercise you do is an extra boost). It will also seriously firm you up!!

Cookoo. I had a stall weight too! I reached it last year in September having lost 4.5 stone of baby weight over the previous year. Then last autumn I got disheartened and gave up and ate and ate and by new year I had put 2 stone back on Sad

But (Grin this has a happy ending) I got back into it in January. I Low Carbed (very slow for me though). Started Jillians 30 Day Shred in April. Big results by June. Started 16:8 at the end if July/beginning of August along with 6 week 6 pack (Jillian again!). In August I started 5:2 after dipping my toe in slowly.

And huge great big massive results!!

I am now at my lowest weigh post DC and only a few lbs (ok 7lbs) from my goal and pre DC weight.

I am waaaaaaay lower than my stalling weight.

And I now wear all my old wardrobe. Admittedly because I still have a few pounds to, there are some items which I look a bit stuffed into so I am saving those for later Grin. Other than that its all good. Grin

And I have not deprived myself. Wine most weekends (very naughty!).
I have eaten healthily with lots more veg and veg soups etc. and much less rubbish as I quickly discovered that 150cals of crisps doesn't fill you up the way 150cals of veg does.

You will get beyond it. The stall weight that is. I worked out very hard with the 6 week 6 pack and built lots of muscle. I stalled most of September in terms of weight loss but by the end of September I was wearing much smaller clothes so I lost fat and gained muscle.

Anyway I will stop ranting and go and drink my tea.

Have a great Saturday.

DumDum32 · 02/11/2013 11:09

not2b Grin

rubbish don't worry make one change at time as too many changes can be overwhelming I found. for e.g replace one snack with something healthy. u will get there just keep ur determination up :)

cuckoo I think I'm heading for a plateau too after 4 weeks. my weigh in day on Monday & really hoping its not a gain! I would prefer plateau then a gain.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 02/11/2013 11:11

Sad at rain as roday's exercise was going to be gardening.

FD's, NFD's and exercise seem to have gone to pot while I wait to get this nexplanon out - I have given in to greed and sloth my fourth week of pms and period pain without an actual period Angry

Roll on tuesday when the implant gets dragged out :)

BigChocFrenzy · 02/11/2013 11:17

MrsF Great achievement ! Flowers

cuckoo Cheer up. Try a wi post-totm, probably better news. Whatever, those of us with a small choc / ice cream / muffin issue do plateau.

BTW: Have you noticed a mad frenzy puts on XXL lb overnight, which remain for several days, compared to the week of disciplined eating with 2 FDs which brings a 1lb loss ( between plateaux)
Sad Angry

BigChocFrenzy · 02/11/2013 11:23

rubbish My username shows I know the FD problem ! Healthy loss takes patience, even with discipline.
Try:

  • 2 FDs per week. Even if they are 7-800 cals, they are still a major deficit
  • at 28, if your general health is ok, start exercising to increase calorie deficit and prevent muscle loss. Walking / jogging / cycling / Zumba / hoop / weights / fitness DVD / any sport you might enjoy trying.
WilsonFrickett · 02/11/2013 11:27

rubbish we are twins!!!! I'm 5' 2" and 10 st 8 too! (although I was 10 11 when I started this woe 5 weeks ago Grin.

Having now got the hang of fast days, my plan for this week is to use mfp and religiously track everything I eat on nfd's. I really don't know how much I'm eating - I don't particularly feel like I overeat, but have come to the conclusion I actually don't have a bloody clue. So I'm going to take a baseline, so to speak, and then have a good hard think about my NFd eating from there.

I know I have to up my exercise too, but that will be the next thing I think about - I know if I try and change everything at once nothing will 'stick' .

MrsFlorrick · 02/11/2013 11:31

Bigchocfrenzy. Yep. The frenzy extra poundage thing!! Thankfully it's quick to go even though it means you plateau for a few days after.

I am ashamed to say that I had a cheese and wine frenzy last night. Hadn't had cheese and biscuits with dessert wine for so long. I was so good all day. Ate well and well under TDEE so I was saving some for a glass of wine. Sadly I ate 100g of cheese (that's about 350cals to you), half a bottle of dessert wine (400cals?) and 12 (yes 12) Finn crisp biscuits ("only" 19 cal each but 12!!!!).

So yep a frenzy.

I don't feel bad though FD today and no wine tonight and a Jillian workout.

Besides two weeks of DC half term activities whilst still managing a few FDs and managing to lose a little and not gain!! And it TOMT today and I have been bloated. So hoping there is a pound of bloat in there to give me a whoosh.

Anyway excuses excuses. Fact remains that my youngest is 2 years and 3 months and I have lost almost all of the 6 (oh yes 6) stone I gained having the DC. I gained that in my first pregnancy due to GD and lost all but 1.5 stone and gained it again with no2.

And just over 2 years later its almost all gone.

So as long as I can keep up the FDs and not have too many frenzies, I will be at my goal just before Xmas. Happy days. Grin

I sound slightly delirious this morning perhaps I'm still drunk.....Wink

Breadandwine · 02/11/2013 11:43

Nice one, DumDum! I reckon I had a calorie deficit after not eating until dinner last night (after my splurge on Thurs evening). And I had a good 18 hour fast into the bargain!

I was very good last night, since I made a batch of Chelseas in anticipation of visitors this afternoon - without sampling any! I was very tempted, but this discussion kept me on track.

So much so that, for the first time since I've been IFing, I'm starting to look at the amount of carbs I consume.

BsshBossh · 02/11/2013 11:48

RE stall weight longtermers on these threads know that my stall weight plateau lasted 4 months last year. I settled at the weight I'd spent the longest of my adult weight at which was around the 165 lbs mark. But I kept at it, changed nothing and started losing again after Christmas (go figure!). I figure my body finally accepted I meant business.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 02/11/2013 12:14

Wow! MrsF you are a real inspiration! And bloomin Well Done!!!! I can't imagine how it must feel to get to the bottom end of the weight gain. You must feel so proud of yourself, as you should! To top it off, finally, a woe to keep things under control whilst living a 'normal' life. The really great news is that whilst for a lot of us excess weight is an issue, the REAL benefits of 5:2 are in all the extras it delivers.

Oh and yes - us women are cursed with what you don't want in abundance, what you do what nigh on impossible to achieve!

Really need to get on the exercise train properly, but need to sort core out as priority, before I get too enthusiastic with the likes of JM. Am trying to keep correct posture and do Pilates breathing as much as poss but I've got a bit slovenly and need a good kick up the bum.

MrsFlorrick · 02/11/2013 12:23

Cookoo. I obv didn't loose all the weight with 5:2. I tried lots of diets/wols. But this is the only one which doesn't feel like a regime so I can carry on as normal and still lose weight.

No special food or equipment needed. No special days of the week for certain foods. No excluding food groups (except sweets and crisps Wink).

And Cookoo. I had an 8 finger seperation after DC2. My tummy was a useless blob. I had a partial hernia ouch.

Also had SI joint problems. I was in lots of pain and had mobility issues.

I have had lots and lots of private physio. First after DC1 and this allowed me to actually be physically able to carry DC2 and again after DC2.

I am abviously building on that with JM workouts.

The physio I had was essentially clinical Pilates. It works!!!

You can download most of it from tinternet rather than spend on physio.

The key and the boring bit is to do the exercises twice a day every single sodding day! It's the only way.

So yes I am pleased to be fully mobile and nearly at goal weight. I thought I was heading for obesity and a wheelchair Sad

And don't count on NHS to help. They wrote me off. Gave me opiate based pain killers and said they wouldn't refer me for physio as I was too far gone and it wouldn't help. Bastards.
