Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

AnnieL woohoo! Twinny! But ahem, how did 11.7 happen???? Hmm. You are going to be the 'skinny' twin at this rate! You are storming ahead!

I am fd today, so will do my weekly weigh in tmw. Although it's been a naughty week I will hopefully have shed the totm water retention, as that has now arrived, thankfully!, before I turned into a slobbering, gibbering food scoffing wreck! Always build up, and up, to one really bad day; then it's like a pin in a balloon, as my body and appetite deflate again! So I'm hoping pmt had hidden a loss???? (pretty pretty please)

Anyway, what I meant to say was Well Done Thanks. Am going to do a couple of 4:3 for next 2 wks, taking advantage of easier part of cycle!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 01/11/2013 12:55

Bayliss don't worry too much about hitting tdee on nfd, provided(!!!!!) you are not depriving yourself. I don't have a clue where I am from day to day (except fd) and I'm continuing to lose. Each to their own on how you work out if you are consuming too much. I have found by trying to eat only when genuinely hungry, and then only eating until full that this is working for me. I think our bodies tell us what we need - it's all about tuning back in - which 5:2 is great for.

If you don't feel hungry - don't eat. And if you do get concerned that you are too low too often, then maybe try having a splurge day/weekend like a lot of people on here do. The not feeling hungry on nfd seems to be a common thing on here. I was just posting about it other week. Also remember that we women, and a lot of men actually!, go through cycles - so although you feel like this now, it may change at any point, and then change back again. So make the most of it Grin

I am so jealous of baby cuddles. I miss that time soo much (dd 8) and sadly not on cards for me atm. Stay there and soak it up, it's horrible day out there and babies don't stay little for long!

DumDum32 · 01/11/2013 13:21

hey all :)

so far a succesful FD consumed 315 cals so far. the rest will be used up for dinner so am on target!

I had a quick question (sorry I know I keep asking but u all are so wise with ur advise)

I'm going to aim to do 4:3 so 4 NFD's & 3 FD's. so my question do these days have to be consecutive (I.e one after another) or should I be spreading them out. I'm rather Confused.

on another I felt proper I'll yday after eating so much I think I'm just not use to it so TREE of 2119 won't work for me I'm going to stick to around max 1500 cals. that way I won't have the sickening feeling I'd u get what I mean.

hope everyone is having a good NFD or FD :)

DumDum32 · 01/11/2013 13:22

sorry for so many typo's Blush

BsshBossh · 01/11/2013 13:31

I'm jealous of baby hugs too. My DD (now 5yo) never seemed to like being held much as a baby - kept craning her body away from contact and wriggling loads even though she was a very contented baby and slept through very early. Thankfully at 5, she is a wonderful hugger and boy do I savour them (cause one day she'll be a teen!).

MrsFlorrick · 01/11/2013 13:52

"Anything under a 1000 cals is a hiccup"

Bigchocfrenzy. I think I love you a little bit Wink

Am in hideous bluewater shopping with DC. It's busy and my two are creating merry hell.
Can't do my Jillian workout today as I've slept funny on my neck. Hmm

Hope you're all having a more pleasant afternoon than me!!!

Talkinpeace · 01/11/2013 14:17

Dumdum
4:3 is a form of ADF = Alternate day fasting
ie fast Monday, Wednesday, Friday - eat Tuesday Thursday, Saturday Sunday
BUT
be willing to be flexible as that is what makes it work long term.
I've not done any fasts at all this week - and am really looking forward to Monday's !

MrsFlorick
See how fast you can walk around each level - DCs and I wasted spent a happy hour pretending all the other shoppers were chicanes on mariocarts Wink

Coveredinweetabix · 01/11/2013 14:21

I'm heading for a Hallowe'en based FD fail here. I always fast on a Friday but am usually at work so it's straightforward. Today, I'm at home surrounded by the leftover funsize chocs that didn't get given out last night (we only had 40 odd t&t'ers when we usually have closer to 100) and the fresh loaf of sourdough that one of my neighbours dropped off this morning. So I haven't had breakfast and was plenty on an innocent pot for lunch but ended up having two thick slices of sourdough with butter then a mini mars bar & a mini twix plus some drumstick lolly things so I think I'm at 500 already and that's just sugar & carbs so will have to endure a crash shortly! That's going to be painful. I'm tempted to say "sod it" and have pizza for tea but tomorrow is my two month anniversary of this woe and I was hoping for a good weigh in. Alternatively, I could fast tomorrow if I abandon today's attempt. I'll decide later.
My aim for tomorrow is to get off the sugar merry-go-round that I've been on since DD's birthday ten days ago.

DumDum - I do 4:3 most weeks and have my fast days on Mon, Weds & Fri.

DumDum32 · 01/11/2013 14:43

thanks talkinpeace & coveredinweetabix that's helps and makes a lot of sense. so over the weekend I can eat normal YIPPY Grin

mrsflock you will burning plenty of cals walking around so no need for workout me thinks Wink

Bssh yes enjoy those hugs whilst u can get them. my 3 yr old run away as soon as I mention a hug so I have to force myself on to her. although she hugs other people very easily Confused maybe I smell LOL

Talkinpeace · 01/11/2013 15:01

Baby hugs ... my "babies" are teenagers - trying to extract a hug from them as they come in the door from school is rather like a rugby match Wink

DumDum32 · 01/11/2013 15:07

ha ha ha talkinpeace I can imagine Grin

eatriskier · 01/11/2013 15:14

Haha tip its a bit like that with mine and they're 1 and nearly 3! Though easier to scrummage down on Wink Though judging by the germs they've been passing on maybe I should stay away.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 01/11/2013 15:15

Ah nooooo! I am dreading the teens for that! I make dd promise me every day she isn't going to grow out of mummy loves! I've even discussed fact that she'll have to find a husband/wife who doesn't mind sharing the bed with me for morning cuddles Grin

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 01/11/2013 15:18

.... though at mo she is sat next to me scoffing Halloween loot and breathing chocolate breath on me every time she speaks. Is currently holding a Malteser in her hand staring at telly. It's been there for about 30 seconds and I swear I've just dribbled Shock

BetsyBell · 01/11/2013 15:27

Bayliss the MFP 'tdee' will be your calorie allowance set to weightloss mode - obviously that doesn't take into account only eating 500calories 2 days a week so is lower. So you can aim for around 1800 on non fast days (if you want).

bigchoc I picked the packet up and put it down again [learnt from mistakes emoticon]

My 7 and 9yo boys hugged me yesterday because I took them to a museum. Yes, that's right, I officially win at parenting. glosses over the number of video game hours they've had over half term

Dotty342kids · 01/11/2013 15:29

Hello all, just having a quick catch up. This week has been a bit of an eat fest. Bloomin' school holidays!

Out for dinner with DH tomorrow evening so going to try to mini fast and just eat then, no breakfast or lunch.
Then Sunday is Diwali so will be eating my own body weight in home made samosas, pakora and curries courtesy of my MIL. Yuuummmm Grin. Thank heavens the kids are back in school on Monday and I am back at work after a few days off and will therefore be too busy to eat!

Talkinpeace · 01/11/2013 16:03

I still get morning cuddles .... they both pile into bed with DH and I leaving them comfortable and us crushed into a teeny gap in the middle.
And yes, I love hugging them, but never at school - its a casual headbutt as they get out of the car.

Holiday eat fest : yup, enjoy and then be disciplined all term. It works.

DumDum32 · 01/11/2013 16:28

oh no just had a call been invited out for family dinner tonight & tomorrow.

tomorrow I'm not fused as it's NFD but tonight there'll be burgers & chips Shock :(

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 01/11/2013 20:06

Fd success!! Hooray!
My sense of smell is out of control and I keep thinking of what I'm going to have tmw, but as Mr B&W would say... The kitchen is now closed!

Bayliss1 · 01/11/2013 20:30

Thank you for the advice about my TDEE. Looks like I can eat more!! Wink

Yes, I love my cuddles with my lo! There's always time for cuddles. As many of you have said, they won't be as regular when she's a teenager!

FD complete, I'm off to bed! Night peeps...

BigChocFrenzy · 01/11/2013 21:23

Well done cuckoo You fought your way through the FD despite being attacked by hordes of Maltesers.

I just ended my mini-FD with a gargantuan meal out, 3 courses of the most delicious food I can remember.
Grin
The dessert was the highlight: an enormous sweet Flammkuchen with baked apples, Calvados & almonds.
My poor bicycle struggled to carry me home, where I was attacked by a 100g bar of nutty chocolate and a chocolate shake which I had to vanquish.
Major Choc Frenzy alert! Estimated calories the last 3 hrs are stratospheric. Kitchen is closed, because I no longer fit the doorway !

Another mini-FD tomorrow, but disciplined, then a full FD Sunday.

Not2bObvious · 01/11/2013 21:33

Happy Friday Y'all! My mid term gain(ok closer to 2 week wander in piggery) is 1.8 Grin I'll take it gladly, especially since I've now eaten rather a lot of the Halloween lootBlush
Definitely on a 2500 cal day

BigChocFrenzy · 01/11/2013 21:56

Not2b You did ok. I think I doubled your cals in my evening orgy out, but it was great!
My Monday wi will be grim, but Halloween is now over.

BsshBossh · 01/11/2013 23:06

Have I mentioned the oddity that is my 5yo DD? Yes, so you'll remember she dislikes cake (cue me scoffing eating her share of her friend's birthday cake the other day even though I wasn't remotely hungry for it). Well today I offered her some Halloween chocs I've been saving for her from MIL's and she declared, "I don't like chocolate, it's too sticky, you can have them all Mummy." So, BigChoc, as far as Bssh's greed inability to throw away perfectly fine food is concerned, Halloween is not over at all. I've told myself that come Monday any junk left in the kitchen cupboards is out of here. It's a 4:2.5 week for me (2 full FDs and 1 mini fast day) - a solid fasting cleanse next week. Can't bloody wait.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 01/11/2013 23:13

BigChoc Grin you do cheer me up!

Glad you had a lovely meal, not least because the description of your dessert has got me through last part of tonight. I can almost smell it [slobberingsalivatingface] and it made me stop myself from having a rubbish, therefore wasted, piece of loot; I realised it just wasn't up to scratch and if I couldn't have something truly delicious (such as your dessert), then I would have nothing!!

I am off to Lidl tmw to raid them for something similar!!

Hope the suspension on your bicycle holds up. And keep your phone on you; that way if you do get stuck in kitchen door, you can still keep in touch on here Grin or phone for help
