The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Bigchocfrenzy. I bow to you Grin amazing. I do love a choc frenzy.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 31/10/2013 23:20

Fast day tmw it is then! Anyone else?..

Have eaten way too much and currently spoon in ice-cream getting tearful at telly. Seems that totm has been moved to seasonal celebration status in terms of justifying face stuffing. Shovel another handful of crap in whilst shrugging "well, it is totm isn't it!"

Breadandwine · 01/11/2013 01:04

Well, if we're all 'fessing up…

About 11o'clock I decided a cup of cocoa would be in order - with perhaps a couple of Lidl's spiced biscuits. So I had six - the last two accompanied by (small) bites of chocolate covered marzipan.

I thought that was that, but, just now, I thought that a small spoonful of my new favourite dish - lentils and rice with savoy cabbage plus coconut milk and Thai curry - would be nice. Well it was - and so were all the other spoonfuls I had. Oh, and I needed a glass of wine to go with it!

I mean, my stomach was full, I could feel it. I did not need any more food - but I still carried on eating.

Eventually, I managed to put it away in the fridge. If I'd put it away earlier, I might not have been tempted!

Ah, well, no breakfast, and probably no lunch for me tomorrow!

I've already had them, right? Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 01/11/2013 06:15

BreadandWine Well, don't try blaming totm !

Glad I no longer have that to sabotage weight. I remember I could pile on a few pounds then even being perfectly good.
cuckoo put that B&J away, totm magnifies ice cream calories ! PS I love their "chunky monkey*

My mini-FD will be just a (ginormous) supper today in a lovely restaurant after total fast of about 27 hrs.
Good look to any full-FDers today.

BsshBossh · 01/11/2013 07:47

Half term gain not so bad this morning - just a gain of 0.4 lbs.

eatriskier · 01/11/2013 07:57

Feel a little scared to post as my mini fast went well yesterday. Shall go hide…

Next week I shall be working. Its only a week and will be the first bit of work for over a year. I've been busy wondering if I should knock fasting on the head or if maybe I should switch to 16:8 for that week, because the work I'll be doing involves calling people and I don't want to be getting tetchy at the end of the day. It seems all that wondering may be moot - I seem to have laryngitis. Don't you just love kids and their germs Confused. Oh well - plenty of lemon, cayenne and cinnamon for me over the next few days.

BsshBossh · 01/11/2013 08:02

Get well soon eat. In our family, we swear on honey, lemon & turmeric (1 heaped tsp honey, juice of half lemon, quarter tsp turmeric - mixed into runny paste and eaten off the spoon). Very effective.

Bayliss1 · 01/11/2013 08:14

2nd FD for me today! Not as excited as I was about my first! Eak! Encouragement needed....
I have lost 4lbs since Tuesday so I must be doing something right (official weigh-in day is Tuesday though).

lucyintheskywithdinos · 01/11/2013 08:15

Fast yesterday...was interesting. I was very sensible and stuck to my food plan.

Then I drank two beers and a third of a bottle of some whiskey. We sat around a bonfire in the garden until 3.30am. It was lovely, although my toes are still thawing out.

However, a weigh in today (as I'm away this weekend) and I'm a pound down.

Doing a mini fast again today so I can forget about it on Sat and Sun.

eat get well soon!

Welcome careerwoman it's good here!

Stop talking about ice cream you dreadful people! Grin

BetsyBell · 01/11/2013 08:58

As I predicted my second fast of the week (even as an attempted mini fast) was a fail BUT I had a small success in that I didn't buy the usual halloween sweets that I like (cadbury's eclairs) that leave me eating them for days and then craving sugar (and getting headaches) like a frenzied addict for weeks after.

Not attempting another fast until back at work next week.

Well done to those who've managed a good second fast this week!

Well BreadandWine - after your confession, it now feels that all is right with the world Grin. There really must be something in the air! I think the spiced biscuits you mentioned are exactly the same kind responsible for the start of my downfall yesterday! As for chocolate covered marzipan!!... If it is the bars they do [insert salivating face] - I love the marzipan praline one - IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT! Let's sue Lidl!

BigChoc I am also a Chunky Monkey Flunky! Just can't find it round these parts. But that and choc fudge brownie were my faves before PBC hit the shelves.

Cue angels singing, bright lights shining and EatRisky floating above us on a golden 5:2 pedestal, her hula hoop sparkling brilliantly, above her (very prominent cheekboney) head.

We are not worthy Eat, and it is you we now look to in these moments of darkness and say..... "Help us, Eat!" (that is - help us fast, Eat; not help us eat, Eat)

Fast day here today. All good so far. Just about to have a coffee. Will avoid looking at those cupboards containing the evil stuff.

BetsyBell · 01/11/2013 09:08

Good luck Bayliss, sounds like your first try went well, just do that again and remember you can eat it tomorrow, whatever 'it' is that you might be hankering after later!

BBE - try upping your liquid intake on fast days, headaches are often a sign of dehydration OR could be caffeine withdrawal if you're normally a coffee fiend and some some bizarre reason choose to go without on FDs!

Don't forget folks that a huge percentage of your water intake each day comes from food so we must always drink much more than usual on FDs to ensure we're getting enough.

Get well soon eat - we do lemon, honey and fresh ginger for sore throats and colds in this house!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 01/11/2013 09:14

............ DRINK WATER ..........

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 01/11/2013 09:37

Inspired by Betsy

BBE I was also going to say that regards headaches, I used to get them too, but after the first couple of weeks they stopped. I do drink lots of water anyway, always have, but as Betsy said, it will make a difference with what you're not getting from food now too. Otherwise it could just be as simple as withdrawal from sugar/crap as your body is detoxing on fd. They may go once you stabilise new overall lower weekly levels of such things.

Just realised though, that the non fast related headaches I had been suffering on and off with for months and months prior to 5:2 (to point of getting glasses and having blood tests), have gone too! Nothing has changed except starting 5:2, so maybe a NSV??

BayLiss Well Done! They (generally) get easier, it is such an addictive and rewarding lifestyle!

EatRisky my aunt swears by crushed garlic mixed with tbsp of manuka honey, and just neck it. She tried it on me once, by surprise! Repeats for hours, but apparently works a charm. If nothing else the feeling of nausea it induced, took my mind off it!

Bayliss1 · 01/11/2013 10:34

Cuckoo I think I could get addicted to this lifestyle! I've had breakfast and 2 pints of water and am now sat down cuddling my baby whilst she sleeps. I could be here for up to a hour and half which will keep me out the kitchen!! I love my baby cuddles!! Wink

annielewis · 01/11/2013 10:40

Bayliss I think I could get addicted too - have seen some nice results on the scales and am feeling flatter/tighter however you want to describe it. I definitely feel good!

If anything I am struggling to hit my tdee every NFD. Does it matter if I am not feeling deprived and am finding it very easy to stick to? Am averaging between 500-600 cals on FD's. Am sort of doing 4:3 as need to see results fast as got big family event coming up and don't want to feel like a lardyarse!!

Am having my 'blow out' day today and have just scoffed two mini dairy milk bars at 80 cal each. Damn halloween!!

Good luck anyone who is fasting today!!

BigChocFrenzy · 01/11/2013 10:47

eat Concentrate on getting well again, maintenance with 16:8 is maybe better than full FDs.
My favourite recipe is maybe contra-indicated if you are meeting people: fry 12 garlic cloves and add to a single bowl of hot chicken & veg soup. Clears the sinuses - and clears away everyone who doesn't really love you.

annie if 2 x 80-cal choc bars if your idea of a blowout, you need to learn from the masters (mistresses ?) here. Anything under 1000 cals is a hiccup.

Betsy Small victories, such as changing dangerous habits, are important. Before 52 you would have been scoffing Halloween junk until the shops were empty.

Bayliss Good luck with your 2nd FD.
700 or 800 cals is perfectly ok, if 500 is a bit too tough in the early weeks. Once you have managed a few FDs, it is much easier.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/11/2013 10:49

cuckoo B&J, all flavours, are on my shopping list tomorrow. And it's your fault !
Grin

Bayliss1 · 01/11/2013 10:52

Annielewis please share your progress...
Choc frenzy I never thought to do 700-800 cals to start with but I managed on Tuesday so will see how today goes. Also I'm finding it hard stick to the 1500 cals on NFD (as I not eating them all). Will that make a difference?

Bayliss1 · 01/11/2013 11:01

Also I've just used the link at the beginning of this thread and it's worked out my TDEE as 1800 cals but MyFitnessPal says 1500. Which do I follow?

annielewis · 01/11/2013 11:09

Bayliss here are my stats: 5ft2, age 36 start weight 11.12 lb, been doing this WOE for 2 weeks and according to the scales this morning am now 11.7lb.

Am so chuffed with that and have not even been exercising (eyes evil Jillian DVD's) which is my next plan of attack once half term is over. Am not in denial about my fitness levels and would rather suffer that indignity on my own the first few times!!

Hoping that might boost the toning up aspect of this.

Honestly feel happier, calmer, less bloated, more in control and truly excited about what the next few months will bring for my body and my self esteem. Don't think I have ever felt this positive as an adult. EVER!!!!

Actually feel a bit emotional typing this! [embarrassed]

annielewis · 01/11/2013 11:10

Why didn't my blush smiley work???? Smile

Bayliss1 · 01/11/2013 11:31

That sounds just like the results I'm looking for! Can you answer the question I posted about my TDEE? Not sure if I should be having 1500 or 1800??

Bayliss1 · 01/11/2013 11:32

And very well done to you!

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 01/11/2013 11:41

Bayliss I gather the one in the link has been deemed the most accurate by those with more experience/knowledge than me so I would use their estimate of your tdee. Most people eat to 90% of tdee which, for you, would be 1620 based on a tdee of 1800.

Annie you typed embarrassed instead of blush - easy done :)
