The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

helles I'm the sort of person who likes routine a bit too much and finds it hard to get out of a rut...but I will sort the weights things out - I'm even paying for it all in a way with my gym membership so I should make the most of it.

Bigchoc Thanks for the kind words.

MrsF I don't have any room for exercise in my small bedroom and my boring live-in-landlord never gets off the sofa so can't exercise there. But I'm moving in four weeks so may give Jillian a go in the new digs as well as trying hooping. Thanks for the thoughts.

Quite a few of you struggling today as I was on Tuesday - I think this weather and the clocks going back an hour (for those in the U.K) doesn't help. Good luck!

MrsFlorrick · 31/10/2013 17:41

Erm. That's should have been oriental chicken soup not prudential. Wtf!? Auto correct is out of control.

So a long afternoon at soft play with DC. I did so well until after dinner. I gave the DC some chocolate that one of the neighbours had given us for DCs Halloween. And I proceed to fall face first into chocolate. Ate about 300 cals worth. I then polished off DSs left over sausage - another 150 cals. Argh. It's only still a fast day if I deduct the calories burned from my Jillian Michaels workout. But that's just cheating myself. Arse. Hmm

So close to shutting te kitchen for today and. Failed at final hurdle and scoffed a load of stuff. I still want more chocolate tooConfused

BsshBossh · 31/10/2013 17:58

Good FD so far. Kept busy out and about with DD. Not hungry at all so after her bedtime I might just have a broth-based cup a soup (Ainsley Harriet's szechuan chilli thingie) and a 10 cal jelly. Had a sneaky weigh in this morning first thing and 3 lbs up (I call that the half-term effect!) but official weigh in tomorrow. Funny, cause the weight gain didn't depress me at all and I think it's because I've reached BMI 22 and a few lbs gain doesn't matter :)

Emmabryant123 · 31/10/2013 18:20

Mini fast planned tomorrow after a binge today,
Three slices toast, scrambled eggs for breakfast
Sausage roll for lunch from Greggs
Chicken salad for dinner.
Have packed a salad for lunch tomorrow i42.tinypic.com/acegpx.jpg

Then planning hm chicken veg soup for dinner.

Not2bObvious · 31/10/2013 18:46

FD has been going ok but the kids just came in with their Halloween loot - I need a scream face emoticon but this will have to doHalloween Shock
Ok ok, no one panic - sitting at about 550, craving chocolate & crisps!!! Having a peeled segmented orange with tea. Going to eat super slow then treat myself to a new book on my kindle. Might do my nails too. But I will not fail.
My WI tomorrow is when I'm officially accepting what I gained from 1.5 weeks off track. Not making it any worse than the 3-5 pounds it undoubtably is.
On an up note, isn't it great how easy it is to get back on track?

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 31/10/2013 19:01

Borderline fast day fail here. Didn't get to sleep until gone 3:30 last night. Woke up feeling as though world about to fall from womb, and with a very tender 'area', which is not from hula hooping!

Day went: water, coff, water, water, banana, mini twix, 4 biscuits, mini maltesers, more mini maltesers Hmm If I have air for dinner, I could just about make it.

Tempted to just sod it, have a pity party and cash in the totm card! On the up side, after my chilli 'clear out', have felt very flat of stomach today. Down side is I otherwise feel like crap! Have dragons den come up with 'Mummy for a Mummy' hire yet?? Could sooo do with some of that today - tucked up and taken care of. Otherwise, I've got two hopes of that ever happening for me!

Thanks for sympathy Mrs F, and was about to say Well Done!, but instead have just Grin at your fail too! (in the nicest possible way)

Think there must def be something in water, or to the clocks change theory. Consolation hugs to all fd failures today. 'Ere, have some Cake.

Lermontova KICK UP THE BUM!!! (insert boot)

Had some advice for you, but as I have just outed myself as a fd failure today, I should probably hold off Hmm.

Drink/keep busy through hunger pangs, eat late as poss and run to bed was gist of it - to get you through first success again. If floodgates opening is your trigger, then avoiding eating until late as poss, is what works for a lot of us with the same problem. Once you nail it again, you will most likely find it much easier from then on. Just keep picturing 'old you' next to 'new you'. One is holding the kitchen open 24/7 sign, the other isn't! Set yourself a mini goal with a reward at the end. Good Luck - you CAN do it!

.....right where is that takeaway menu...

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 31/10/2013 19:14

am Grining so much at all the tales of fail today.

Must be our inner child(s) trying to sabotage us, in retaliation for growing too old to take part in trick or treat ourselves.

Am sitting in darkened house hoping no-one knocks! Have a bowl of choc to give out, but the front door is sticking so badly at mo I can't open it on my own, and no-one else in! Have to run round the back garden and out to front each time otherwise!

..or is it stuck??? Mwah ha ha ha haaaaaa!

But seriously, it is actually stuck. Shame about all that choccy going to waste Hmm

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 31/10/2013 19:17

I have image of all us 5:2'er failures waking up tmw, with chocolate amnesia, surrounded by wrappers a la Dawn French in Vicar of Dibley!

Not2bObvious · 31/10/2013 19:32

I am in hell - HELL!!! My littlest is insisting on using me as an armchair while eating crisps, munch munch, licking fingers, spilling crumbs all over me. And oh my GOD, it's taken her 25 mins to eat them?!?!? she's still picking/licking the pack. I'd have had them inhaled in 3 mins...oh yeah now I remember why I'm hereConfused

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 31/10/2013 19:51

Today has gone wrong here too.

Never mind, I've eaten vastly less than yesterday.

somewherebecomingrain · 31/10/2013 19:51

not2be Grin

I've done ok today - 836 cals. Was quite active and baby was hungry so I think that's not bad given its half term.

Had 2x milky coffee, then some sugar free Halloween cake lickings, then a glorious skinny soup and carrot sticks (cheers alibaba ), then half a mug pumpkin soup, a chicken wing and one sugar free cupcake.

I don't consider that a fail all things considered and I think all you out there cuckoo and others should pat yourselves on the back it's not worse!

BigChocFrenzy · 31/10/2013 20:02

Wave to all
Sounds like the FD from hell for most of you, except the immaculate Bssh of course. Yes, put it down to the clock shock and forget it.
When I'm cold on FDs, I do pressups and burpees, which also cheer me up.

I planned today as my 3rd FD, but invitations intervened, so I had only 1 (HUGE) meal at 1pm and tomorrow will have only supper (even HUGER).
Grin
My cal deficit over 2 mini-FDs will be only 500 instead of 1500
Blush
but pre-52 it would have been plus 4000. The beauty of this WOL is the flexibility to fit my life and manage my gluttony.

Talkinpeace · 31/10/2013 20:05

marking place - gosh you lot type a lot !

DumDum32 · 31/10/2013 20:12

omg It went totally wrong for me today as well.... :( I have eaten way too much today so tomorrow has to be a fast day!

thanks you for working out my TDEE & yes I am female Grin

I've not gone over my TDEE today but it feels like I've swallowed a whole cow

will be aiming to eat around lunchtime tomorrow to give my digestive system a break from all the crap I ate today!

BBE2012 · 31/10/2013 20:27

Sorry to have posted one noob message a couple of weeks ago then not again.

Completed week one 5:2, and week 2 4:3 (too much vino last Sat led to an unplanned liquid fast on Sunday...)

Am finding FDs ok apart from feeling cold and headachey, although FD5 I had no headache.

Am sure learning a lot about my 'eating habits'. I've just eaten dinner (NFD) not because I needed it - had enough food already today - but because I'd got something out the freezer last night and it would have gone had to go in the bin otherwise.

Been watching Dr Jason Fung's lectures about diet/insulin/IR on YouTube - found them fascinating (Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, cancer and obesity in family but not me - yet - just overweight and wanting to sort it).

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 31/10/2013 20:37

I've rescued my FD, the soup was 120 cals and I've just had a quorn cottage pie ready meal with green beans, brocolli and a few asparagus spears.

The quorn meal said 220 on the pack, so with one spoon of sugar in a coffee is had this morning, I make that around 400cals today

I've done 2 days of the 30 day shred to counteract the lack of school run walk and not running.

Fingers crossed I'm into the next stone.

BsshBossh · 31/10/2013 20:43

Well done BennetGirl and fingers crossed for a good reading on the scales.

Can't wait for NFD tomorrow - DD and I are spending the day at my mum's and a new Sri Lankan restaurant and takeaway has opened near her house. Yum!

BigChocFrenzy · 31/10/2013 20:58

Anyone else been childish (not food-related) on Halloween ? I took a skull with scary flashing eyes into work and then into a gym class.
I'm still waiting to grow up, just hasn't happened yet (at 57). Explains the choc frenzies.
Grin

BsshBossh · 31/10/2013 21:10

Successful FD over, came in at under 150 cals, 3 NFDs now, yeeeehaarr

BigChocFrenzy · 31/10/2013 21:21

Well done Bssh Figured you would be the one to smash this FD. Your half-term effect will soon be vanquished

BsshBossh · 31/10/2013 21:33

Thanks BigChoc, hope so! Big chocs for me tomorrow Grin.

WannaBeCareerWoman · 31/10/2013 21:40

Hello all,

Can I join in? I am thinking of starting 4:3 on Monday...

BigChocFrenzy · 31/10/2013 21:42

Welcome, CareerWoman. Like to tell us a bit about yourself ?

MrsFlorrick · 31/10/2013 22:06

Ah ha!!! I am not the only one who's failed today. Perhaps the weather or Halloween. Grin

I did eat more choc. I think I should be called bigchocfrenzy!!Grin

Oh well own fault and all that.

BigChocFrenzy · 31/10/2013 22:12

MrsF Noone can compete with my Frenzies - I've eaten 8 choc donuts or muffins and had choc ice cream for pud. I am the champ !
Grin
oooh, glad I just cleaned my teeth; I've made myself quite hungry !

Sleep and forget about choc. night all
